Hers was the face every adventurer hoped to be greeted with when he returned home, a place of love and warmth that never dimmed even on the darkest day.
A fine maiden, beautiful, even, but in a kingdom so vast, it was nothing of note.
The Dark Lord had all but shifted his witch-sight to another, even more beautiful, when the girl demanded his attention once more.
Her eyes had gone dark, her smile had left, and she stood now in a clearing, alone.
No. Not alone.
A man emerged from the edge of the clearing, dressed in a roughspun tunic and pants. His short blonde hair had the texture of straw, and his green eyes were lit with anger. The girl had begun to step back, but upon seeing him enter the light, stood her ground.
Were they known to each other?
The girl spoke, then, in a rough dialect that seemed at odds with her delicate appearance.
"What do you want, Hrogar? I don't have time for whatever it is."
"You don't seem to be doing anything, Hel." The man smiled. His eyes did not.
"I don't believe that's any of your business, Hrogar. I told my father I will not marry you, and I will not. You have no power over me, now leave before you do something foolish."

The girl began to move once more, but her actions slowed as Hrogar began to approach her. Her body tensed, her face twisting in fear - but only for a moment. Her eyes began to harden, anger replacing her fright, overpowering it. Her once-loving eyes shone with a strength and fury the Dark Lord had only ever known in himself. Was this truly just a peasant's daughter?
Hrogar had not noticed this change. He strode forward with confidence; he would take this prize, even if she would not offer it to him.
The girl braced herself, taking a stick from the ground and brandishing it as a weapon.
Was she stupid? Did she really think a stick would save her? The Dark Lord was disappointed with this; a smart or resourceful woman would have run to spare herself. Yet, he was intrigued, and kept watching.
The girl stayed where she was as Hrogar approached. He was nearly on top of her now, his anger gone, a smile of perverse pleasure on his lips.
The girl tried to run.
She bolted for the trees to her left, to the East, and Hrogar chased her. He was faster. As the girl ran, she tossed the stick behind her. Hrogar shifted aside to dodge, his mind focused on the chase - and stepped right into a bear trap. The girl kept running, even as his screams and curses called the attention of her village. They would find him, and he would be freed - but she would not be there for it.

She tumbled over rocks, sprinting as she could through the undergrowth in her path. The Dark Lord was interested in this girl, impressed, even - instead of letting her fear overcome her, she had maintained a level head. She had considered her options, weighed them, and chosen a course of action which lead to her safe escape. She was beautiful, small, innocent; yet also powerful, resourceful, and unafraidl. Just the type of woman who would excel in a place of power.
Just the type of woman who would excel by his side.
The Dark Lord let his spell weaken and fizzle out. He had seen all he had to. He would journey to this forest village and find this woman. He would test her - for no amount of surveillance from here would allow him insight to her true personality - and, if she was suitable, he would take her for a wife.

Well yeah, but this is a fantasy setting we're talking about. Clerical healers are probably commonplace, and with their help, crops probably grow much better. Not enough to make life easy, but I could definitely see it being easy enough a beautiful woman could grow up in that environment.

Besides being his bed slave and arm candy she must be his confidant, likely the only person he can trust besides himself at his court. She must deal with the many servants and courtiers at his neck and call who will seek to use her to gain his favor, get one over on the Lord, or even replace her. She should learn to contend with the more domestic side of his rule, smoothing over the rebellious and the dissident with her charming demeanor - or striking fear into them with her remarkable cruelty. Look to any modern day politicians wife or first lady for inspiration.
