Misunderstandings about wolf pack structure and the idea of being an alpha/lone wolf.

In reality a pack is just an extended family unit led by the parents and lone wolves are misfit failures unable to find a mate. The rigid alpha/omega hierarchy only forms when you shove unrelated wolves into a confined space under stressful conditions, like a zoo.

Ironically, this means that the people most obsessed with being a "Lone Wolf" are in fact the people most like one.

>extremely common misunderstandings of wolf behavior
>historical closeness with humanity in general
>often used as a symbol because of the above
>"raised by wolves" was a huge cliche for a while
>furries

That's basically it. People think "lone wolves" are cool because they don't know that's actually a death sentence for a shitty wolf that can't cooperate, or they think the Alpha/Beta shit is how it actually works. Wolves are "wild" but because of dogs they're recognizable and slightly more relate-able than other animals, so they're scary while also potentially not. There's some kind of noble association from putting nature on a pedestal, too.

Humanity's view of wolves is a massive game of telephone that resulted in retards identifying with a mangled image that's "so totally me."

Obsession with animals as companions is just a common thing, especially for people who have trouble socializing and relating to others. They project onto what they feel an animal represents, whether it's wolves, foxes, dogs, snakes, etc. Dunno what to tell you. Maybe try to understand and roll with it.

and if they sperg out and ruin the game for everyone, don't talk to them anymore, it's not your job to fix or punish people's shitty behavior

I used to be a hardcore wolfaboo, but now I'm just a casual one. I still like animal symbolism in my RP, whether it's just a motif, or they're a shapeshifter, or they have an animal companion, or they're a full-on beastrace.

Most my characters have some level of animal symbolism. My favorites are my wolf guy, snake guy, and cat girl. Good shit.

>>
>>51416565
I'd hypothesise that egoism and altruism are based in deeper levels of our conscious than previously assumed. In this case, the odd wolf or pack animal will for some reason have developed a stronger sense of self-entitlement and demand more from the pack than their own contribution warrants or becomes too aggressive in their attempts to gain power in the pack. In this case, the wolf is ousted from the family because the others will protect their own interest and wellbeing. It's not seen as a failure of education but simply an exagerated personality trait brought about by natural influences, and so their exclusion is seen as self-preservation and not cruelty.
>>
>>51416154
Although certain animals fit better depending on what the character does/is.

For instance, if I play a Transmutation-focused Wizard, it only makes sense for him to be associated with snakes.

>Snake/staff symbolism (good enough for Moses)
>Snakes are inherently associated with transformation due to shedding their skin (however, butterflies and other such insects also work well for this)
>Flesh to Stone is a transmutation spell, and through the basilisk, cockatrice, and gorgon, snakes are tied to petrification in a way no other animal can be
>Snake-oil salesmen promised their products would change your life

>>51416565
Yes, they can be born wrong, just like any other animals, they can exhibit traits that will prevent normal socialization, maybe some physical deficiencies, maybe mental. Also it can just be that the circumstances get in the way of normal socialization.

>How hard can being a wolf actually be compared to the expectations of human society, anyway?
Like with any wild animal, pretty hard. Or rather, it depends more on your luck, if you are born a strong, mentally stable and dominant wolf, life's good, or at least okay. If you are weaker, dumber, less assertive, life's okay or even good, but your genes aren't passed on. if you are well below the norm, you're an outcast and will probably die soon. Humans nowadays just try to help everyone.
>>
>>51414381
A little aggressive OP. Let it play out.
I've seen players plan on what most would consider cliche or seemingly autistic things. And they actually did well.
It's really based on how well they can roleplay it.
Give it a chance. If it works, then nothing further needed.
If he fails, help him! Yeah, not the response people expect, but making something autistic actually good is a nice roleplaying challenge. Help him, figure out a method, and so on.
Remember, the game is for fun. He wants that, help him out with it.
Don't be cruel and just dismiss it as autistic. Be a human who actually helps.
Or, if you're trolling and hoping to trigger de furries, then I don't really care. That's your call of griefing which nothing can be done about.

Why not just skip the whole connection and just be a wolf?

There are thousands of people who just create and roleplay wolves. What a shame all these writers and artists just faff eachother's knots off.

You could always fluff a character associated with a shark as being stubborn and indomitable. Always stepping forward, never stepping back, their stubbornness giving them the ability to hand anything life can throw at them.

I think wolves are neat. It's sort of like a tougher dog with that hint of feral that if you can overcome you have a friend for life. I have a friend that had a pet wolf, it was super chill and used to howl to sing along when he would play bass.

Not so interesting in fantasy though. Worgs on the other hand are cool as shit. Sentient mounts for goblins that are shady as shit. Sign me up.

A desire to be able to connect with others that they, by the very cruel nature of their disorder, lack.

Wolves have that, an instinctual ability to connect with others of their kind. Autistic folk are simultaneously awed and jealous of this, because it's something they desperately crave, and will never have.

Alright lets see what I can remember. I warn you this may not bee that amusing, but i'll get started and you can tell me if you want more.

>Be me
>Go to visit friends on a Friday night
>Get told after you get there that it's actually game night and they have joined a game of Shadowrun since you last saw them.
>Kinda wish they had told me that, but OK, I can leave I guess
>They insist I stay and join the game
>Which starts in about half an hour
>I know nothing about the party, and I don't know the people they are gaming with
>But what the hell
>Throw together a quick character based on Jayne Cobb cause I'd been watching firefly recently named Jamie
>Minmax myself a tacticool Orc beat-stick.
>Sniper, assault riffle, pistols, grenades, high explosives, fists that do lethal damage, the works
>Friends tell me about their characters
>The friend who has an obsession with felines, who I shall henceforth refer to as Catman, is playing a Technomancer
>Catman's character's life was saved by a group of sprites, who looked like cats.
>He worships sprites
>All his sprites look like cats, and have pet cat names.
>He, the player, wears a pair of headphones with cat ears on them he got from Japan, which his character has as well of course
>He actually does that nyan shit before I tell him to stop being an idiot.
>He compulsively leaves tags that look like cats everywhere he goes, and leaves signatures in the shape of a cat in whatever he hacks
>In Shadowrun
>You know, that game where you really really don't want to get caught
>This isn't even the retarded bit, but i digress, we'll get there in a bit
>Other friend, who I shall refer to as Streetsam, played a street samurai.
>Apparently no one told him this term was not meant literally
>He made a literal anime samurai, complete with Katana and Yumi bow, and an obsession with "Muh Honor"
>did I mention my friends are Weebs?
>Anyway game starts. Catman had called the DM and OK'd me.
>>
>>51423643
The problem there seem to stem from him being a massively autistic weeb, more so than the cats, but do continue.
>>
>>51423686

Honestly he's not like that normally. It's the only time I've ever seen him do that. I don't know what happened, but that game was screwy.

>>51423643

>My character concept is simple, I'm a greedy mercenary
>Talk with the DM, he decides the easiest way to integrate me is to have me show up at a gang-banger hideout one of the PC's is infiltrating
>Set it up as me getting hired by said gang, so that the group can have me join by just hiring me away from them for more
>Meet player who is infiltrating gang.
>Is the group face, who I shall hence forth refer to as Stuffed Shirt
>Stuffed shirt is playing an Elf who is incredibly bombastic and insulting
>Anyway the gang banger is asking me what my fee is, and I tell him seven percent
>It's standard after all
>Gang boss agrees, they show me and the face around the hideout and tell us to show up tomorrow, they've got a shipment coming in
>Face proposes we go get drunk and get to know each other since we are the new guys, he's paying for the first round
>Never would Jamie pass up on free drinks, so away we go
>Convinces me to turn on gang and help them kill the gang bangers and take their shipment by offering me bigger cut
>We go back to their base of operations, meet the last member of the party
>To me he is Dwarfbro, he played a Dwarf mage
>Now I don't usually like Dwarves much, but this guy was a rock of sanity in this game
> And he didn't even do that daft accent
>Planning how to deal with Gangers
>Talking for a bit, but none of them has a better plan than just bust in and kill them all
>They haven't really thought this through
>I propose plan
>I will make a bomb, and then use that to blow up the break room (I don't know why a gang had a break room, blame the dm) with the Gang Bangers in it
>This will be the signal for the rest of them to enter
>but how will I get the bomb in they ask
>I reveal my master plan. I will disguise the bomb as a sandwich

>Then I can remote detonate it, signaling the rest of them to come in
>They seem OK with it. So I make the bomb, pack it in a sandwich, and the next morning away we go
>Get to the gang's hideout. Mossey on into the break room
>It's empty
>Dm likes to throw curve balls
>That's good, it's the Dm's job to challenge the players
>Gotta think fast on my feet
>I poke my head out and see several gangers standing at the loading bay waiting for the shipment to arrive
>I know what I must do
>I wrap the Hoagie up to keep it in one piece, and then I step out and throw it like a football straight at the gangers
>As it lands at their feet with a squelch I duck behind a wall and thumb the detonator
>And that is how I killed three gang bangers with a ham sandwich
>Mission is a go, Streetsam ninjas his way in through a window, and Catman hacks their systems.
>Dwarfbro and Stuffed shirt are meeting the contacts we are turning the shipment over too
>Streetsam goes through the gang members like a hot knife through butter
>All except one
>This one has on a visor, which Catman hacks and disables by filling the display with you guessed it, images of cats
>Dead for sure right? Can't see and our walking blender is coming straight at them
>They live
>Sheer dumb luck, bad rolls for Streetsam, good rolls for random female Gang member number eight
>Before Streetsam can deliver the finishing blow Catman cries out
>Wait, she lived for a reason. Clearly this is no random NPC, she is blessed of the dice, or maybe the DM fudged it. Either way we should take her captive
>What?
>I ask him what good that could possibly do?
>He says we can interrogate her
>I point out it's a random gang member and we already killed her gang, what could she possibly know?
>Catman insists, so we take her

>Session ends
>Getting ready for next session
>I have a sinking suspicion i'm going to have to do the interrogation myself, so I bone up on my Shadowrun interrogation rules and watch the scene where Jayne interrogates the lawman a few times
> Next week comes around and it's time to play
>Our agenda for the day, interrogate goblin number 48
>Look over at Catman and tell him this was his idea, so get to it
>She has a mind jack
>He can get into her head
>In he goes
>I'm pleasantly surprised, maybe he actually thought this out
>I'm expecting some serious mind games
>What i get is rather more disappointing
>He goes and says' listen, I know we killed your friends and kidnapped you, and that you're tied down and blindfolded, but we really aren't bad people'
>'How about you tell us about the rest of your gang. We could be friends'
>I'm not even kidding you
>That was his interrogation tactic
>Obviously that failed, and then he looked at us and went, well I got nothing
>Look around the rest of the table, no one has any idea what to do
>None of the guys who lobbied for bringing her actually thought about what to do next
>I sigh and speak up
>Jamie has everyone but the street sam leave and then walks up and pulls off her blindfold
>Big scary Ork with big scary knife and guy who killed all her friends
>I'll skip the details, but she talked
>Knew nothing of course
>Huge waste of time
>I'm all for washing our hands of it, but then stuffed shirt speaks up
>We could still use this he says
>She saw me as part of the gang, I'll tell her I was captured too, just rough me up a bit and bring me in tied up and then I can get her confidence and "escape" with her and she'll lead us to the rest of them
>Rest of the group decides to go for it
>Jamie hits stuffed shirt
>Now this was the first time I had hit anything with this character
>Man did their eyes get huge when I grabbed that double fistful of dice
>>
>>51424112

>Technically speaking I did enough damage to kill him twice over, but we mitigated it of course
>It was still great to watch his reaction when he thought I had accidentally killed his character, he'd been annoying me a bit
>So anyway we bring him in and then we leave, and he starts talking with her
>Talks with her a bit, and gets her to help him get a pair of hidden lockpicks secreted on his person that we had "missed"
>He gets loose and pulls out the little hold out pistol that we had "missed"
>At this point I think if it was me it would be stretching my credulity, and the dm agrees
>Lets Stuffed shirt make one final speech and then asks for a persuasion roll
>He cuts her loose and then rolls
>He rolls very very poorly. Almost surely a failure
>The NPC tells him to give her the gun and then they can leave
>We all beg him not to, well except for Catman, but he insists that if he shows her good faith by giving her the gun he can pull this off
>He gives her the gun and is promptly shot in the chest
>Our face is lying there bleeding to death
>She then takes off running
>We had all been a ways away, and she actually nearly got away
>DM tried to fiat her as getting away, but I pointed out I had ruined one of her knees and there was no way in hell she could escape or hide since she'd be slow and leaving a blood trail
>He grudgingly agrees and the Streetsam catches up to her
>Now the logical thing to do is kill her right?
>She's armed, she has no value, she knows where our hideout is, and she just shot our face
>Catman insists she be allowed to live
>Street sam agrees, says it would be "dishonorable" to kill her
>All my what
>He just disarms her and knocks her out, and then starts carrying her back to the hideout

So anyone still interested, or is this not doing it for you all as I suspected it would not?

>You know, just a slug to the chest with a small caliber gun, no big deal right?
>Now I waited until the Street sam came in with the body to start up my objections
>Jamie sees she's alive and asks if they're plumb loco or just stupid
>She knows nothing, has no value to us, and is a liability
>We gotta deal with the loose end
>Street sam wants nothing to do with it, there is no honor in killing a defenseless oponent
>Then why didn't you do it when she was shooting at you?
>Catman is of course in the background insisting she live
>Other two are mostly silent
>I "concede", and then I hand the DM a note telling him I roll to reach out and crush her skull and then I toss the dice
>Honestly not the best way to handle it I know, but I was kinda pissed at this point and I didn't wanna put up with their crap
>This happened to be the day I convinced my newest DM that I was a psychopath, between the torture and the skull crushing thing
>Anyway it goes through, Catman and Streetsam are pissed but they don't have enough time to react and stop me
>I think she's dead. End of story. We dump the body with some ghouls we know
>It's over right?
>Wrong
>A few weeks go by, other things happen, and I try to forget about all that
>Had to have a long chat with my friends, they were pretty mad at me, but we worked it out
>Anyway life moves on
>A few sessions later and we haven't heard from the ghouls in a while.
>We had been working with them a bit before I joined up apparently
>Dwarfbro wants to check and see whats up
>Well we go down, and all the ghouls are dead
>Bodies and blood everywhere and a poem written on the wall
>It's a riddle
>I won't bother posting it all, it was kinda long, but I knew the answer
>The answer was women
>I have a sinking suspicion I know where this is going
>Anyway a few more weeks pass and we get together to game
>>
>>51424326

Little detail I forgot, the poem was about what is the most dangerous thing. That's kind of important. Now back to the story.

>Streetsam is late and calls and tells us to get started without him, he'll catch up
>The Dm tells us that our fixer gives us a call and tells us to go to this old hospital
>Kinda odd, but OK
>We get there and the DM is doing his level best to make the place as creepy as possible
>Well this isn't suspicious at all, but in we go regardless
>And then the blast doors come down.
>Why does a hospitol have blast doors? I don't know it's Shadowrun, the dm doesn't have to explain shit apparently.
>Cue the intercom and a female voice
>Don't remember exactly what was said but it was something along the lines of us ruining her life and now she's gonna kill us all
> Me myself i'm wondering how she survived, but now is not the time to question, now is the time to act
>Pull out my pistol and me and Stufed shirt set out after her
>Dwarf bro stays with Catman, who hacks into the network to try and get us out of the building
>No go on the hacking
>So me and Stuffed shirt find her right?
>Her face and skull are all messed up and stitched together
>I put two in her chest
>Figure it's half over at that point
>Nope
>She turns to purple smoke and then wafts into the vents
>Somehow (read DM ignoring how vampirism works in Shadowrun) She had become a vampire
>And we were not stuck in a mostly unlit and sealed off building with her
>Oh joy
>Well she re-materialezes and we do fisticuffs for a bit before she realizes she can't beat me and mist forms again
>We think she might be heading for the others, whom she could catch unawares, so we start running back
>She materializes behind us, pulls out a gun, and shoots me in the back with a silenced pistol
>Fortunately I am a Tanky mofo, and I live
>Roll over as I'm falling and I shoot her some more
>She really should be dead at this point, but vampires can heal, which she does every time she mists

>Now I don't know exactly how vampires work, but i know sunlight will always do the job, so I blow a hole in the wall
>I hadn't done it before cause I didn't want to draw attention by using explosives in the middle of the day here in a residential area, but screw it she shot me
>Well the sunlight does not cause her to burst into flames like i had hoped, but it does keep her from misting and running
>I am well and truly ready to end this
>I want her dead
>She just tried to kill us, came closer to killing us than anything else had up to that point
> I prepare for the coup de grace, and the DM starts giving us a sob story
>The vamp expects us to feel sorry for it
>Begs us to just let it leave
>It'll never bother us again, just let it leave and live
>Oh hell no I ain't trustin that
>Cue Catman
>And Streetsam, who had showed up just a little before this and whose character was just now getting here
>Screaming about how we couldn't kill her and that I had crushed her friggin skull and we should just let her go
>Streetsam takes a page out of my book and acts rather than argues
>He attacks me, and the vamp gets away while i'm dodging a Katana, and then we have to run without going after her cause we gotta get away before the cops show up to see why the building went boom
>Did i mention the DM decided that my little pyrotechnics show had caused the building to collapse? Which is daft cause i only blew up one wall and it wasn't even load bearing, but whatever
>So she got away and the group was all "well that's done now, its over and she gave use her word she wasn't coming back"

>She was lying low living in a rundown house

>I think the DM was trying to convince me to let bygones be bygones by showing she wasn't hurting anything and had no intention of coming back for us

>She's gone out (DM fiat) and she starts talking to me
>Begs me not to do this, she wasn't gonna come back, she was done
>UV keeps her from healing, she's burnt and coughing up blood
>Crying
>I finish the job and then hit her with another Molotov and burn the house down with her corpse still in it

>The group never really noticed, but the DM appreciated the character development

>Eventually we saved the city from Locust spirits.

Because it seems to me that it was more just Autism, and the cat theme wasn't the focus of it.
>>
>>51424769

Honestly in telling the story I glossed over a lot of the cat stuff. It was small pervasive things. Would not shut up about cats, found ways to interject cats into things all the time. There was never a session where cats did not come up repeatedly, often at inappropriate times, but I ended up telling the other story rather than that though. Honestly the cat thing wasn't that interesting and i don't remember the specifics, I just remember that the cat autism drove me up the wall almost as much as this whole thing did. Which is why when I saw the post about cats I decided to put in my two cents, but when you asked for story time and I got going this is what I could remember. My apologies for the bait and switch, it wasn't my initial intention.

No worries m8. Was a decent read. Just had to ask.

>>51424810

No like i said they are normally not like that, I really do not know what came over Catman and Street sam that game. I honestly don't, I had never had problems like that with them before, and I haven't since.

Okay wait no i lie, there have been a few things since, but those were in games I was DMing, so it was the other players (the DM from shadowrun and Stuffed Shirt) who had to deal with it that time. I got a great laugh out of it actually.

I dunno m8, the most autistic people I've ever met were all dog owners. Cared more about their damn mutts than other people, spoke to them in baby talk, considered them "family," and not just in the "I care deeply about this living being" sense, but in the "this dog is my literal child" sense.

Wolves are organized, deadly in groups, and resemble dogs (which we kind of have a connection with as humans). Ergo if you use wolves as a symbol (without thinking for like 2 seconds) it implies a level of competence, team coordination, whilst not distancing yourself too far from human qualities (being endearing, being fallible, having to deal with complex problems).
>>
>>51425232
Out of curiosity, what are the breeds that drool the least?
>>
>>51429426

German Shepards are pretty clean.

Personally I recommend them to just about anyone who wants a dog. Loyal and incredibly intelligent. Main downside though is even if you train them well they have a habit of being very protective towards you and your family, which can make them pretty unfriendly to strangers and especially other dogs. That and they have a lot of issues with their hips at later life. An old German Shepard often can barely stand, which is fucking depressing.
>>
>>51429474
>Their downside is their loyalty
Sold!
>>
>>51417510
This to be honest. I got nothing against dogs themselves, just their retarded urbanite owners who act like they're humans. Only horse lovers are worst, and they're way smaller in number.

Dogs belong to farms, police, rescuing teams, etc. not to random loners.
>>
>>51429509
And bad hips, don't forget that.
>>
>>51429426
I have had over a dozen terriers of several different breeds and mixes. Not one of them ever drooled, even when sick. I've never had a dog that drooled except for a pug that drooled once when she was very, very sick, but it was more like she was oozing thin vomit than drooling.
>>
>>51429597

Border Collies are just as loyal and even more intelligent and don't have the hip problem. But they're also smaller and less aggressive, so they make poorer guard dogs.
>>
>>51418482
