Dragonborn.
Rare, one of the 'fallen' races, like giants. They used to be more common and stronger, but lost nearly everything ages ago and never really recovered.
They're currently more brutes than sneakies.

Overlord manga. It's not really that much about lizardfolk doing lizardfolk things. Check chapter 16 onwards for that.
>>
>>51412052
Mostly just NPC monsters. Sometimes under the control of a dragon, often times barbarous. The few times where it was asked of me to make a village for a PC lizardfolk, they were traders or hired goons due to either low resources or just naturally scary/strong.

I like that as a detail and it makes sense. If you can't make a lot of facial expressions then body language fills in the gap on conveying emotions.

they're intelligent amphibious raiders in my current setting. they prefer capturing far over killing, as they have access to multiple slave economies, and maintain a small series of kingdoms and chiefdoms. they're one of the few animal person races in my setting that is known to commonly associate themselves with human conflicts and occasionally make human friends.

More lizardlike.
>>
>>51413595
yeah, though I imagine them more like sea peoples as this is a bronze age setting. they conduct both land and sea raids, depending on the faction. not any reason any of them would be 'salt-water' lizardfolk unless they've got big chunks of iguana. animal person lore is ancient wizard fuckery in my setting, just some dude experimenting with producing thralls for specified tasks by combining human and animal traits thousands of years ago for a while. races that didn't go extinct at some point persist, lizard people included, so their genetic origins aren't of much consequence to their habitat.
>>
>>51412052
Much like tribal africans.
Kinda limited to tribal technologies thanks to their environment and actual limited amount of distance they can actually go thanks to their cold blooded nature. That and dry deserts and marches don't really have much in the way of letting free time to tame beasts or get metals.

Sure theres civilized ones, are even a few city states and vassal kingdoms that are equal to whatever kingdom is nearest thanks to magic/colonisation.
>>
>>51413755
>wizard fuckery producing new races

Used that in one of my settings too. It's a convenient way of explaining humanoid lizards, though I guess it could be explainable with some biological mumbo-jumbo.

I've read somewhere that small gecko-like lizardmen could actually come from evolution, though I don't remember the details.

>>
>>51413974
Is that really how sexual dimorphism in reptiles work? I thought bigger females was more of an insect/arachnid thing.
>>
>>51414138
Almost all reptiles you see wandering around are female, the males don't move around very much, are WAY smaller (like a quarter of the length). They're totally dependent on female lizards to bring them food. Kind of the opposite of lions. So your view of "average" lizard size is totally based on your experience with female lizards.
>>
>>51414182
Crocodilians have larger males though.
>>
>>51414220
Yeah, that plus the fact that I totally made up >>51414182 does weaken the argument somewhat.
>>
>>51414182
Interesting, though it depends on the species. See graph on page 2:
http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Erobertcox/SSD_files/Cox%20et%20al%202009%20JEB_2.pdf
>>
>>51414254
And then there are side-blotched lizards, where males have one of three colors on their throat and each color is a different kind of male.

Orange throats are big and tough, with large territories and harems of females.

Blues are average, keeping only a single mate, which are often stolen away to an orange harem.

Yellows are slender and appear female, living in the harems of oranges and sneakily mating the females while the orange is off defending his turf.

Lizardmen should have a lizard language with lizard songs, lizard cities full of lizard homes where they wear lizard clothes and read lizard book. They should have lizard armies with lizard weapons and lizard magic.

They should be the remnants of reptillian empires of the Time Before, an era even before the elves. They use strange alchemy to resurrect beasts of that era.
>>
>>51418535

So they should be largely irrelevant then?
>>
>>51418824
That probably depends on how good that alchemy is, and how prepared everyone else is to deal with lizard wizards riding dinosaurs.
>>
>>51418824
Nope, they should be rather relevant, with a Lost World island of their own, reptillian spies in government across the land, and seeking to rebirth Tiamat Mother of Chaos into the world and wipe out all mammalian life.
>>
>>51418852

Remnants of defunct former powers tend to be less relevant than they like to think they are.

I think Warhammer did lizardmen great on multiple levels, succeeding at both making the lizard men play and look great, as well as giving them a unique lore, and south american aesthetic.
>>
>>51419054

There is nothing wrong with that asuing it is true, but I can enjoy more than one kind of game. I never said I couldn't get behind relevant lizard men, just that I would enjoy getting to roleplay shutting down and disproving arrogant assholes. I understand that what you propose might be more fun over all, it's just I think my model would be cathartic personally.
>>

>>
>>51412052
Playable, natural bite, natural armor if possible, based on barbarian cultures that never developed beyond a certain point, like tupis and their celebratory cannibalism.

Had a lot of fun with a crocofolk character once.
>>
>>51419097
South American? You meam like Maya or Aztecs?
>>
>>51420787

Fact, the azteCs were not actually called aztecs, they proper name for that civilization (and I'm probably going to spell this wrong since I'm not going to go google it, feel free to correct my spelling) was the mexica. It's actually where the name Mexico came from.
>>
>>51420830
I thought mexico was something like 'I can't understand you'

Or was that an old wives tale?
>>
>>51420893

Probably an old wives tale. The people were the mexica. We derived the term aztecs from the name of their capitol, which is hell to try and spell or pronounce so I won't bother. If you're curious you can google it.

The things you learn in college history courses man. The things you learn. Gotta say the conquistadors were my favorite part of that unit, mostly because of how the professor described them. Every time he mentioned them he'd say the same thing, " the conquistadors were gangstas." Said it like three times a lecture, but for some reason it made me chuckle every time.
>>
>>51420987
>>51420830
It was the Mexica (Or Tenocha, of Tenochtitlan) tribe as leading part of the Triple Alliance that formed the Mexica Empire, along with Texcoco and Tlacopan.

The origin of the Mexica people is in mythic Aztlan and they were the Aztec before they settled and became the Mexica

I've just included civilized gobbos that live in what is basically not!Ireland, and make all sorts of cheap alcohols and can be found in half the docks in the world.

Also before we're done with lizards, I want to say my favorite kind are snakemen. There's something appealing about them I don't get with most lizardmen.
>>
>>51412052

I allow Lizardfolk to be playable races in the games that I GM, simply because they fit in the setting.

Most of their tribes are in the forests or marshes, and they're either friendly, indifferent, or hostile to warm-blooded humanoids depending on the leader of the specific tribe.

They're tough, and use the marshes and woods to their advantage to be sneaky.

More than a few tribes have adopted orphan Kobold warrens into their communities, having a strange fondness for their smaller kin, and seeing the pragmatic use of them.
>>

This, I played only as Argonians in TES since I was 7, now I'm scared to play as a Dragonborn in D&D because how people will view me
>>
>>51424931
Are you talking about actual talking animals? Because from ny experience those are considered less furry than beastmen.
>>
>>51424976

No, anthropomorphic animals.

Argonians are a good example, like >>51424957 said. Khajit are much the same. Most fantasy settings have a similar variation on those themes. Hell, one of my favourite book series as a kid was Redwall, where literally every character is a woodland creature that acts like a human, yet I probably wouldn't want to look a few pages into a Google image search for any of them.

It's especially bad because it seems to have exploded in popularity.
>>
>>51412052
Think Lizardmen from Warhammer Fantasy, but with their own personalities and not having to rely on spawning pools.

Redwall characters tend to stay away from 'furry' territory thanks to the art from the books, which leans much more towards the 'animal walking upright' side of the spectrum.

Never done lizardfolk in my games before.

I'd probably make them playable, but very alien in mindset.

They're not very passionate, and often have trouble relating to or understanding the emotions of other humanoids. Their minds are cool, calculating things that process information quickly. However, they prefer to think through possible actions and formulate plans so much so that inexperienced humans could easily misinterpret them as slow. They certain move slow, until the situation demands it at least. Then they're lightning fast.

They're literally cold blooded, so much of their culture and mindset is derived from the need to conserve energy. Descended from predators high on the food chain, they tend to be less inclined to emotions like empathy, kindness, and mercy. That said, they're not exclusively a race of evil edgelords, and many move past their more animalistic instincts to become truly alturistic people.

They're biologically interesting in that they lay eggs, require external heat to survive, exhibit extremely little sexual dimorphism(no lizard tiddies), and are obligate carnivores.

Tend to be more sneak than brutish. They evolved from ambush predators.
>>
>>51428022
>no lizard tiddies

And that's always correct. Take notes XCOM2.

>obligate carnivores

This makes me wonder, do they have any form of agriculture in their society then, like for feeding livestock? Are their only source of food is hunting?

Carnivores living in big groups and/or settlements is a weird concept for me.
>>
>>51428272
They do farm, though it's almost exclusively livestock. They picked up some tricks from humans and other races with better farming, but for the most part they get by on farming insects.

Crickets and worms don't need a lot of care, nor do they require large quantities of grain. The result is lots and lots of high quality protein for minimum effort. This diet is supplemented by other insects, more expensive farmed pigs, and hunting.

Oh right, bugs are pretty good and cost effective source of protein. I could see how they would be an equivalent of grains in omnivore cultures.

I'll totally yoink that idea for something one day, thanks for sharing Anon.

In most species, reptile or not, males are usually noticeably larger than females if they need to compete for mates or territory with other males. For example, male crocodiles and alligators are larger so they can defend their territories (the best banks for the females to build nests, which is where more females congregate. females are also territorial and will defend choice nesting sites from other females, but this is a much smaller territory to defend meaning she doesn't need to compete as much as a male) from other males during breeding season. A huge crocodile can control a larger area and therefore more females by beating up smaller males until they leave, or just killing them.

Snakes on the other hand are solitary and while they usually also have territories they don't compete with mates, but rather they will tolerate snakes of the opposite sex sharing territory or having overlapping territories for mating purposes. Reptiles being an egg laying species means it is advantageous for females to be large so they can produce more eggs at once. This is one reason female snakes being large is advantageous while males being large isn't necessarily.

As long as the relative sizes of male and female don't become so extreme as to make reproduction impossible, each sex will be the size which is most advantageous for it to be according to its own reproductive behaviors.
>>
>>51425041
>>51424957
As long as the reason you play anything because it is cool looking to you, then you're fine.

For me, it's the closest I'll get to playing a Bangaa.

>>51428587
Neat, I might use this.
>>
>>51428272
>>51428352
In terms of food, I think you're forgetting that being ectothermic means reptiles don't need to consume nearly as much food as mammals do. They don't need to eat every day or every few days. Many reptiles go for months without food because with no need to heat their bodies themselves they have very economical metabolic rates.
>>
>>51428721
But would the same apply to reptiles several times larger?
>>
>>51413540
That isn't incorrect.
>>
>>51412052
I like them as seclusive merchant people, dispersed around the world in small but prosperous and influential urban communities. Communities have contact with each other and are all part of a plot to secretely rule the world.
>>
>>51428272
To be fair about XCOM2, those were actually venom glands.
>>
>>51428784

>>51428784
Doesn't it actually apply to them more for the absolutely huge amounts of protein they can digest at once, plus not needing to move as often since little to nothing fucks with them after a certain size?
>>
>>51429395
But isn't the fact that they are bipedal intelligent thingajingies that interact with other sapient race kind of require them to get more protein?
>>
>>51429471
I'd put them as having to eat every 2-3 days due to being bipedal and having big brains with lots of energy requirements. A good halfway point.
>>
>>51429510
Seems fair. This plus being carnivore make for some nice racial traits.
>>
>>51428587
You're largely right but to criticize your example, cause I'm an autist, many venomous species of snake like Cobras, Vipers, and Kraits have males that compete and are thus larger than females. relatively massive females and lots of small male suitors is more of a constrictor thing.
>>
>>51428784
Yes. The largest crocodiles and snakes can go for months without food.
>>
>>51412052
My lizardmen are a mix of traits from Argonians and warhammer Liards.

They are a slave race created by not!Atlantis Dwarfs that for quite a while were isolated from the worl due to the island submerging.

They reproduce like normal liards, but after so, they can be mutated using "shaping pools" by the elders of their comunnitty to make then wathever type of lizard they can. Diplomats tend to have the lizard tits.. they are in the bronze age, but are evolving quite fast after the first contact, taking traits from Orc merchants, modern dwarf explorers and pirates. It isnt uncommon to see a very bulky Lizard walking around in modern clothing, trying to mimic quite badly other civillizations cultures.

They have a problem with a dragon that has beeen submerged with the island centuries ago inside of the dwarf main hold, and from living quite a while into it and only having warf literature and dwarf sculptures and everything, got the Dom Quixote's syndrome and things he is a dwarf king turned dragon, and has been trying to modify the lizards to turn then into "his brethren.

They actually aren't playable, but I plan on making then so in the future, and I dont even mind if a player makes a lizard that is blatandly magical realm, my players tend to only joke around a bit, not get off at the table. And I quite fancy lizardfolk, so it's dangerous that I will end adding weird stuff if players go lizard.

>>51430323

>>

The Lizardfolk in my campaign are primitive hunters, brutallt effective in battle but uninterested in conquest, crusades, or much of anything except living to see another day. They have two distinct races, the nature-worshiping swamp variety and the sun-worshiping variety that live in deserts and badlands. The two races almost never meet, but in the event that they did they would see each other as distant kin.

Interestingly, they remain barbarians by choice. Their legends speak of ancient times when reptiles ruled the world, where their distant cousin that would become Troglodytes enslaved thousands, murdered for the sake of muruder, and worshiped demon lords. The not-yet-Trogs made a huge empire that eventually clashed with the equally evil Snakefolk empire and the old Cyclops empire. As the empires duked it out and thousands lost their lives, the tribal Lizardfolk looked at the chaos and said, "You know what? Fuck that noise. We'd rather hunt and shit than be crazy civilized assholes."

And so they remained in their fairly remote huts, their culture changing very little over the millenia as the empires murdered the shit out of each other and softskins rose to prominence.

Lizardmen are magical experiments bred to be a race of mercenaries. There are different types of lizardmen tribes with different traits such as the Gila Men and the Komodo Men.

They tend to live in the ancient battlefields located between the mage city states. Some of the lizard men live in varied places because of mage expeditions. Most lizard men work for the highest bidder. They are savage fighters and professional mercenaries.

Amusingly, that's exactly what my gnolls are, except they live in the desert as nomads.

Anyway, this thread is full of really cool ideas. I think I'm going to play up the "remnants of old empires past" angle, especially the Aztec theme (complete with blood magic and cannibalism). But also them being sneaky ambush predators, sedentary insect-eating carnivores, and generally cold, slow and detached in day to day life yet the complete opposite in battle.

(Actually, a few of these ideas could work with gnolls as well. Especially the Aztec/blood magic/cannibalism stuff.)

Those gnolls sound pretty cool. I think aztec influences risk being a little too close to the warhammer lizardmen though.

I'm trying to make the lizardmen vaguely like the askaris the German Empire employed during WWI right down to some of their rituals being from a military tattoo with some manual of arms and signing old war songs.

Yeah, but it makes them piss poor guards and shit for garrison duty. They don't care about a thief stealing some bread from a noble when they could be preparing for the next battle. So in an army they are kept near the front lines as shock troopers so they aren't lazy.
>>
My setting takes place roughly 1000 years after a massive cataclysm led to the fall of protoelf civilization. All the races are descended from this race, current elves being the most morphologically similar.

All the beast races were created by a powerful protoelf mage who combined beasts with prisoners to create new slave races to be used by rich nobles as private armies and playthings.

Post cataclysm these various races have formed their own unique civilizations. My lizard/Croc men are basically lizard vikings. Mainly traders/mercs/raiders. I'm planning on having a group which are notvarangian guard for one of the high elf kingdoms.
