Which is worse:
>An obvious self insert character
Or
>wish fulfillment opposite of the player
Shadow or reflection?
Self insert is worse by far. Nothing wrong with some escapism in a fantasy setting. However the sheer arrogance and conceit it would take to make everyone at the table suffer you-pretending-to-be-yourself is mind boggling.

Neither is bad if the player isn't a terrible person.
Any character is insufferable if the player is too.

Self insert, isn't wish fulfillment a large part of roleplaying?

This

Self-insert is lazy, and is barely roleplaying. But as someone else said, a shit player ruins any character.
Self insert at least allows to teach how it works

I like to think at least in the case of self inserts that they would act in character even if they are inexperienced while an inexperienced person acting out of character may seem stiff or unrealistic for that disposition
