I've been playing around for awhile with a couple of lists from games I've watched online and I've fallen inlove with the decimator/defender combo, as it uses both of my absolute favorite ships.

I understand that this is more or less the standard layout for the list:

But I ran this at our local tourney and won quite handedly:

However this experience really taught me how much I wanted his crits to go through. I could push the damage, but the critical were just too unreliable. I could have run Rexler Brath (which was my original intent on the change), but couldn't fit the points well enough.

So I looked around and found this, using one of the new cards from the quad jumper as its core for damage and control, while leaving me points for Brath

I could potentially reduce expertise to juke to push damage, but I'm losing out on more focus results, and I NEED to keep the focus to flip more crits. If I drop it to juke, I can boost thermal detonators to proton bombs as well for even more shenanigans.

Bo'Shek and Intel agent with Oicunn is spectacular. The control and damage output it offers can easily turn battles in my favor, disengage troublesome ships, put them in range of Brath without an arc, or even fly them off the board.

Then Daredevil/dauntless combo with aspiring recruit allows Oicunn to ram twice a turn, every turn if he can.

I've had great luck with expertise on rey, but she has built-in dice mods. I'm considering putting fleet officer on captain Oicunn to pass focus And the defender can take a lock for mods. Unless you need the focus for defense, every hp gone is a crit. Juke pushes hits through better, but expertise gets you more straight up.

Rate my donut steel species/race. Think I brought them up a while ago.

Horned humanoids, standing roughly two meters tall on average, clawed hands and feet, digitigrade legs, tails, skin colours ranging from grey, to brown to red, pronounced patterns of skin ridges across their bodies. I realize they just look like generic demons in space like some devarorian/sith cross breed. Maybe even use that and say they're some beat stick slave race made by ancient Sith. Moving on.

They come from a planet with a LOT of volcanic activity and largely nomadic as a result and make a point of not owning more than you can fit on your person or beast of burden. Being as volcanic as it is, their homeworld has a pretty harsh and borderline unbreathable atmosphere for non native life, so going anywhere else feels to them like having just eaten a mint every time they breathe, so a lot pick up smoking, wear filtration masks, or chew on particular forms of stone from their home, when off world. Another quirk resulting from their birth planet is their tough heat resistant skin, making them more likely to survive blaster hits, not making them impervious to blasters, shoot one in the leg and they'll still limp, but they'll swear more than they'll whine, and recover quicker. Eventually found and uplifted/enslaved/recruited/whatever by someone else, possibly hutts.

Being nomadic scavengers, they've ended up making a LOT of uglies, eventually spawning a subculture of mechanics specialized in making, improving and fine-tuning uglies, and pilots growing so connected to their ugly that it becomes their first and only fighter, often evolving to an increasingly deadly craft as time goes, giving birth to a wide range of unique and surprisingly capable uglies, often coming with monstrous amounts of speed and firepower, usually lovingly painted. Ugly aces are held in high regard in their society, but a good ugly mechanic is much more valued and often fiercely protected by their tribe, it is also common for a pilot to have had considerable part in creating their own ship. They're rather pragmatic about most things, but have honorable hang ups seperating pilot and ship, including but not limited to sabotage, bombing landed or docked space craft, stealing ships or gunning down the pilot outside of their ship. The only proper way for a pilot to die is in their ship, or at old age because nobody managed to shoot them down. Of course they'll do all of the above mentioned things when necessary, but they won't like it. Ship thieves get shot like the scum they are, at least have the common courtesy to blow them up and cannibalize their wreck.

Google "advice for new GMs" and that sort of thing. Read everything, especially stories about bad games and bad players.

Listen to gaming podcasts. System and setting don't matter too much, just get a feel for how a game flows. Write down things that bother you, or things that were done particularly well. A lot of gaming Youtube channels are scripted and not that useful.

Read guides on the Star Wars movies from a storytelling POV - Hero's Journey notes, theme notes, leitmotif notes, production notes, that kind of thing.

Run the starter adventure, eases both you and the players in. It assumes the Pregen PCs, but I've run it with other PCs. As far as General GM advice goes, published adventures are great for newbies, and you could do far worse than just running Jewel of Yavin for them, cause it's great. Advise the PCs that they need at least 1 person who's good in a fight, and at least 1 person who can fly a spaceship, even if those aren't their primary specialties. The FFG system is great for improv, since you just need to know the skills and you can tell them to "Roll your (skill) versus (X number of Y colored dice)" and you can adjudicate just about anything. Remember that if they're flying anything but a light freighter, you'll need homebrew ship rules, which can be found in the OP, as that's one of the few weaknesses of the system.

Apparently, according to nucanon there seems to be two types of ion weapon:

The first is the more traditional one from the EU, looking like blasts of electricity and used to disable vehicles, though apparently relatively less lethal against organics.

The second is the ion disruptor, looking like yellow/greenish bolts with a red trail, and leaving a multicolored effect on a successful hit. This would be the one used in Hoth as well as appearing as a handheld weapon in Rebels. Like the regular ion weapons, it is used to disable enemy craft, though unlike them it is also a brutal weapon against organic targets.

Interestingly, going by visual evidence alone, the Hoth dish turrets would also be ion disruptors. Looks like assault AT-AT models are quite a bit more resilient against ion discharges than their lesser cargo cousins.

Your players decide that they're going to take a minor story point and go wild with it, completely dodging the main plot?

Don't force them back on track. Go with it. They found something interesting - start inventing. Sure, use /pieces/ from the book, but this isn't a Choose Your Own Adventure novel. Minor NPCs with one line of text can become epic, game-spanning recurring characters. Throwaway lines can become vital.

Remember you're /helping/ the players tell a story. You're not retelling a story someone wrote in an adventure book.

So what you need is an excuse to get your programming and/or "mental" hardware upgraded. I see two main paths:

The commander droids weren't completely retarded. Have it be a CIS commander droid that was damaged in the field and had its core transplanted into a superdroid.
Now that it's a commander superdroid it takes to outfitting it self with shields and heavier cannons.
Have its cruiser get shot down over a worthless world and the commander and a small company of droids manage to keep the energy core working(to power themselves) but slowly dwindle in number due to hostile natives.
Have him stuck there for 30+ years until some pirates(Hondo cameo!) arrive to scrap your ship. You negotiate your way off and you can work as a bodyguard or bounty hunter for Hondo and his pirates or whatever you want from there.

Yeah colors are mostly lighter and darker variants of Imperial Star Destroyer Gray, with teh bend being a copper-ish color and the escape hatch a rusted brown.

So according to Obi-Wan, droids are made for flying ships? So if you own two ships, you can fly one, and you can buy a droid to fly the other? They wouldn't be as creative as humans but who cares. I don't get why fighters are ALWAYS piloted by living people in a cockpit. Imperial pilots couldn't pilot ships from the Star Destroyer, remotely? With droid ships for support? This childrens space fantasy show makes no sense.

As for remotely piloted fighters, that shit is BORING. We want to be compelled by dashing heroes and villains who put their lives on the line, not some POG sitting at a computer monitor playing Asteroids.

Plus, ion weapons are accessible enough in the Rebellion era to make droid starfighters impractical. Y-wings come standard with them, ion torpedoes are a thing, and every Outer Rim yokel who owns a toolkit will know how to slap an ion cannon on something. Programming a competent droid starfighter in the first place is probably a colossal pain in the ass, too.
