So we have digital demon summoning (courtesy of Steven Hawking), and we have various "sufficiently advanced technology" deals that look like magic but aren't actually magic, but has anyone ever thought to digitize runic arrays so that you can construct and cast spells remotely via SMS or e-mail?

Vampire the Masquerade has some stuff like that.

You can upload a spell in a data file and anyone that can open the data file can use it regardless of skill. Elders are paranoid about that for a reason

Yes? Not specifically SMS or e-mail, but there are a lot of settings with "modernized" magic that use programs to cut casting speed and circle drawing to nil.

Devil Survivor, Mahouka to name a few.

"The Librarians" had en episode like that. Morgan Le Fay wrote an app that would make the user's wish come true, but with a severe later backlash.
Season one, "And the Rule of Three".

The Laundry has some stuff like that.

Including pre-written magical apps.

I find that picture so cute.

So what happens when powerful spells get leaked into wikileaks and torrent sites? Once the info's out there you can't scrub it out.
>>
>>51254477
Im pretty sure there was an archetype for that in unknown armies postmodern magick.

Consider the following: what if the emojis are actually cleverly hidden runes? And the right combination of emojis invokes a spell?

Well, there's several things you can do, and they'd provide decent options.

I mean, merely having the code does nothing if you don't have a computer powerful enough to run it.

Let's say you have the right spell to summon something relatively godlike and end the world. That's going to take one hell of a computer, possibly like the LHCG, or a botnet comprising of a ridiculous number of suborned computers.

That's the sort of thing that gets noticed, and investigated, and turned into a scenario.

But of course, it's not just powerful magic that runs risks.

A lot of sorcery is hidden because of that, hence the codes in ancient grimoires (which have often been leaked. So they engage in disinformation. Hence the 50 or so Necronomicons out there)

Leaks are also unlikely from inside, due to most OCCINTEL organizations use sorcery to ensure loyalty.

The real problem is people figuring out sorcery for themselves.

It has Infomancy, which is magick based around technology.
Quite different from using technology to perform magic/k.

GURPS Technomancer is this exact concept.

History goes just like it did IRL, except that when the first atomic bomb test went off at Trinity, and Oppenheimer said, "I am become Death, destroyer of worlds", he unknowingly completed a powerful necromantic ritual that brought full-on high mana magic into the world.

Spells can be recorded to CD-ROM (it was a 90's era supplement). It would be very, very easy to cast remote spells (or hanging spells) via text message or email using existing rules. Spells can be copied, but any given empowerment only tracks with one particular copy. Which one that is depends on the intentionality of the caster. You'd have to cook up a metamagic spell to split a spell into multiple castings to accommodate multiple copies.

It's a great setting, and though it's for GURPS 3e it's easy to adapt. Only the one sourcebook.

There was an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where this happened, too.

UQ Holder is set a few decades in the future after magic-users came out of hiding, and "magic apps" have become available which allow anyone with a modern phone to cast spells without training. Some kinds of apps can't be sold to civilians, but you can find jailbroken versions if you know where to look.

However, most of the adventurer-level magic users still use magic the old-fashioned way. Partly because they're more used to it, partly because there's a limit on how much power a phone can channel, and partly because they don't want to be powerless if their phone is stolen or the battery runs out. Some of them will keep a manaphone around for utility spells that are outside their area of expertise, then put it away if they get into a fight.
