Yes, but the additional investment you speak of is something you would normally be doing anyway. Having him on the field rewards you for it. Compare him to something like Melek, or Karametra. The cost and stats dont really matter considering what you are using them for.

I'm doing at the moment Zombies&Wizards tribal deck with GG, but so far I think that my favorite has been Cleric tribal with Ayli. I feel bad for not finishing my Tariel Angels&Demons tribal eons ago, since I completely lost interest in it.
Anyway, the most common tribes in EDH are angels, wizards, zombies and dragons at least from what I've seen.
If you insist on 5-colour, I'd say either elementals (with Horde) or changelings&scarecrows.
There exist really good tribes, but not everything gets support. I could recommend Soldiers or Warriors, since most of them are human anyway, if you want Sigarda.

I don't really see how Trostani is bad. There are stronger WG options, and her mana cost is pretty harsh, but she gains you a truckload of life, and tokens are easy to come by.

The trick is to use cards like Mimic Vat to copy crazy ETBs, then using Trostani to copy them again for added value.

If I were to make an WG deck, I'd probably pick her, but then again I have too many decks planned.

After playtesting, the worst thing to happen is too many lands, but this deck should be pretty versatile, and can easily be changed into a variety of things, fitting your budget/availability of cards.

To get things into the yard, windfall, draw early, or just straight up play until they wind up in there. The deck should ramp pretty hard, so you'll be able to hardcast some of those fatties late game. Just beware, there are only two enchantments you can tutor up with Zur to reanimate anything, so don't discard them if they come up.

I have an Old Olivia deck and I have to say that she is awesome for Vampire tribal as she buffs herself and your field nicely. Szadek is a nice one if you just like your commander to be something annoying to everyone, since he can get really nasty really quickly. Especially if you can give him Double-Strike. He's also good for the ability to splash blue and get some good counter-spells going.

Jeleva is a probably the better option if you want Vampire Tribal in 3 colours, but if you don't like milling your own shit, i'd say that Garza Zol is a little expensive to field, but she's actually a really nice late-game creature.

And Olivia:Mobilized For War is a great Tiny Leaders commander, just be warned, she does leave your hand looking barren, so put as much draw as you can in there.

Kavu could've been broadened into a more perennial type, maybe making later generations Kavu Beasts to show the species diluted since the invasion/preserve tribal interactions of Onslaught block. Vow of Duty/Flight/Lightning are pretty good since they also make him unable to attack you.
Throw in Frenzied Fugue to have someone else's thing run to you every turn.
If you want to make more crazy control swapping shenanigans, throw in Risky Move, Puca's Mischief, Conjured Currency, etc.

Some other ideas would be to give him Shroud (not Hexproof) so that other people can't target him for their own effects, give him Vigilance or put an aura on him so you can forcibly untap him so he has to attack (Second Wind would be good) I say your aura because whenever he changes control you still control the auras, so you can use them to forcibly untap him.

If you're going for lockdown:
Bottomless Pit to force discards, Contamination to fuck with mana bases, Curse of the Cabal for an ever-present sac threat (just suspend it and watch their boards dwindle), The Abyss to Terror a creature every upkeep.
I also am pretty fond of exile for removal in EDH, so I like cards like Bitter Ordeal, Head Games, Nightmare Incursion, Praetor's Grasp, Sadistic Sacrament, and Grinning Totem to go searching in people's libraries and permanently remove threats from the game.
Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale is a land that gives all creatures an upkeep cost of 1 or they have to sac it, so it's good to keep wide decks in check.

So, why aren't you playing this bad boy in every black deck you own /edhg/? I've been building Silas Renn Stax and it's been a great piece to add to my Artificer's Intuition package.

Nah, the Ballista works the exact same as Triskelion with BMikaeus.
Triskelion and Ballista both remove their last +1/+1 counter to ping something, then die, and because they died while having 0 +1/+1 counters they get Undying trigger and come back with 1 +1/+1, then you use that to their abilities to ping, etc, infinite dmg/etb/ltb.

You run too many "discard matters" cards that are just dead weights when you don't have Nath out. Stuff like Megrim and Liliana's Caress is pretty useless in EDH in my opinion. Also Bottomless Pit hurt me more than the opponents way too many times to run it anymore.
