I need some good RPGs that focus on immersion. Basically, games with the following characteristics:
>not so heavy that people constantly consult the rules, or so light that in-character tactical choices aren't available
>"rules as physics" such that players can make decisions entirely in-character and obtain results that make sense
>players rarely or never lose control of their characters
>players rarely or never make choices that affect the game outside of role-playing
I'm particularly interested in sci-fi games of this nature.

GURPS is one of the best immersionist games in my opinion, you just have to be careful about what material you use and it may be a good idea to streamline things at times.
Savage Worlds has some immersionist tendencies if you want to go harder into rules-lite territory. Unisystem also works pretty good for immersionist play.
I'm working on an immersionist cyberpunk rpg myself, but that's neither here nor there.

Thanks. I'll look into GURPS.

>MMO's killing TTRPG
What? The industry is exploding again since the indie era has kicked off.

I just thought it was a "funny because it's wrong" thing.

I'll let you know that the rules are heavily front-loaded, character creation borders on stupidly complex but from there gameplay is fairly simple.
On the bright side, the complex character creation allows for a lot of customization that is relatively balanced.
There are a few sourcebooks you might want to look at, such as GURPS Space, GURPS Ultratech, and GURPS transhuman space.
Transhuman Space has its own subset of sourcebooks if you want a really complete prebuilt setting.
Transhuman Space is medium-hard sci-fi, solar system bound, no ftl, everything is mostly feasible given current understandings of physics. As written the setting takes place around 2100.

Oh yeah, this is probably a good start:

A spinoff of GURPS lite based on the transhuman space setting. Just 32 pages and enough to run a game. Maybe a bit limited, but you can incorporate stuff from the heavier supplements as you like.

Nice! Thanks!
