The text backgrounds range from decent to terrible. Did you even look at the bottom middle? Salt Touched? The inconsistent formatting doesn't help either. I strongly recommend you use GIMP at least for the text formatting. You can set up guidelines to have perfectly consistent text boxes and then make the background in another program if you want.

I'm not very good at explaining things and usually just figure out things myself. But go ahead and go to https://www.gimp.org/ get it and start drawing text boxes and playing with it and I'll give you an example.

Make a 1500 pixel wide canvas. Click and drag the top ruler down to create a guide, the bottom left corner of the screen will say "Add Guide: xx". Move it until it says "Add Guide: 50" to place a horizontal guide 50 pixels down from the top of the canvas. You can also go Image -> Guides -> New Guide... to manually enter the location you want. After that, create two vertical guides 50 pixels off from the left and right sides of the canvas.

You should have three guides in an H shape on your screen. Select the Text Tool and click and drag starting from the intersection of the top guide and the left guide. You should notice that the edges of the text box snap to the guides. If not you can move them around after you've finished drawing to click them into place. Now you can type whatever you want into the box with full formatting options and then, and this is the part that'll blow your mind, you can come back later to edit it after you've drawn other stuff.

Like I said I don't think I'm too great at explaining stuff but hopefully you can figure it out. It's really a great upgrade from paint.

Hard to read some of the text. Better to have it contrast with the background. Usually better to have a uniform background for all text so it doesn't distract unless there is a real specific reason. It looks better when the text is not so close to the border. I don't get why there is a period after Bear or Forest Folk.

I get the basic gist, draw a box for a clipping mask then put a text box together but it looked like you linked them together somehow and then made the copies evenly spaced automatically. CTRL + G allows you to group layers. The "group" can act as a single layer; you can move it, resize it, and even apply blending options on top.

It's VERY limited; still having fun with it, but the variety is lacking. If you really wanna play the Lumeris or, to a lesser degree, the Sophons, don't bother getting it yet. The tech tree is only up to Era IV right now, and the only two victories in the game thus far are Extermination and Score, which triggers at Turn 200 for normal game speed due to a lack of key features. The Vodyani, Cravers and United Empire, however, tend towards military might anyways, so it's not so much of a problem. Also, the game options are very limited; only 3 galaxy types and you can't go large on any of the settings, along with a lot of settings missing. They are, however, keeping to their update schedule and seriously taking into consideration community feedback on Games2Gether though, as they have for all their other games.
In terms of content, all that we've seen so far is absolutely great EXCEPT for the combat, which is in a placeholder state right now that is even less in-depth than the card system in Endless Space 1. Overall pretty well refined, and quests feel VERY involved compared to Endless Legend. The senate and new marketplace/luxury resource management, while confusing at first, are also VERY good additions to the Endless formula.
Final verdict: If you don't want to get your feedback in on the development process, wait until the actual combat gets added in to decide if you're getting it or not.

Creative writing is almost entirely about the quality of writing in a given amount of quantity. You can a description in 20-50 words that will give the reader a comprehensible amount of information to process. Meanwhile, writing a 300 word description will have a different sort of language involved. Moreso, CYOAs are unique of a medium enough that you aren't just limited to language--the pictures you pick to represent the characters tell the reader/viewer a lot as well. This is why I spend a lot of time image hunting and gathering a big pool to use, even if I use only a fraction of it all.

I believe I've gotten better at it from writing a lot of these throughout the years, but for me, it comes down to what details are the most important. I don't believe my characters are all that good--I can go through Battlemage and see a lot of the companion descriptions still left over from the first iteration of the CYOA. In fact, I was thinking of doing a version 2.0.2 for just text-touchups.

On the other hand, you have the opposite: not using your given quantity in a good manner. As a CYOA, there's going to be a certain level of exposition, but too much exposition is not a good thing. What's so interesting about a character when you know -everything- about them? Trim the useless and mundane details because the reader can often fill those in themselves.

You probably don't care about them because so much of their descriptions are spent on background information regarding the setting as opposed to being directly about them. What they did instead of who they are now. Thing is, I can't even remember like 10% of the companions that SDA made for, say, the last version of Battlemage. I don't even remember who I picked for the most part. Because Italics goes on forever and ever about his characters, I can remember them fairly easily. Unfortunately he likes to write a lot of them, so inevitably unless you like certain ones they just slip through your mind.

It's not about shrouding your reader in mystery, it's about retaining a certain amount of exposition and writing your descriptions so it gets the correct message across. If you're filling the description with prose, there'd better be a good reason for that text to be there.

If you spend time listing useless jargon, then it's just going to fill the reader's mind with fuzz. You want to challenge them to imagine it without them knowing they're doing it. They are, in the end, formulating their own idea of the character.

I don't think this is the write way to look at it. Often a single mundane and everyday detail can clue you in as to what kind of person someone is while simultaneously setting your mind to race for the possibilities and implications that such a detail incurs.

Another thing I find which is important is what you say versus what you want the reader to know.

A CYOA companion can afford to be direct and to the point because you understand quite clearly that they're just a character and all the information you know about them is plucked from thin air. But looking at this way also makes characters seem more plain and uninteresting.

For an example how which of the following sentences creates a more interesting character in your opinion.

VS
>She frequently takes long walks through the neighborhood, but takes care to mark down houses with large dogs so as to avoid them.

Both communicate roughly the same idea, and both are mostly mundane details, but by talking about the character through her observable habits vs her direct actions you can breathe more life into the character.

I would have to disagree. There's a lot of Battlemage companion descriptions I'd like to reword for more flare and character. Some are just "they are good at fighting in x style and can cast y spells," which is exactly the sort of thing I want to have there.

I'd rather it be "This character once charged through an army and skewered the Detritus leader with his lance, throwing their ranks into disarray."

Think about what's entailed in that single sentence: the character uses a lance (if that's not implied in his picture already), he can apparently charge through enemy ranks, he specifically goes for high-priority targets, that the Detritus apparently follow a hierarchical way of organization.

I should reiterate; if you want to write a CYOA like a manual or a legal document, you're entirely free to do so. But if you want to write something that's more engaging to the readers with more flare and world-building potential, then it's probably more keen to listen to what I'm saying.

I speak this after years of writing CYOAs and actually studying creative writing.
