Night Lords if you build the tacs as Terror Squads. I'd recommend getting some Volkite Charger resin kits for that.

Alpha Legion works too. Both of those legions have mobility boosts that helps them function without transports.

Emperor's Children miiiight work since Maru Skara gives you outflank, and that works well for big shooty units even if they're slow. But you'd have to buy a lot of other stuff, like fast units for your Open Hand.

Death Guard and Iron Warriors players keep trying to play footsloggers without having infiltrate or outflank. That's easily countered and not as fun, imo, and Mk IV doesn't look right for them anyway.

Hey anons, is there any significance to the black helmeted color scheme on the Word Bearer in the BaC book? I have HH5, and it's not in there, nor does it describe it's meaning either. And in HH5, no tactical markings and such like the Ultrmarines or other legions are listed either?

I'm sort of confused on this.

Actually, since that's listed under 'The Legion of Old', and has the stone grey colors rather than the black, we can assume that's there for historical purposes.

So they went from Colchisian glyphs to Hidden Lore, and they also use Galifreyan-esque on their armours.

>recommending Averland Sunset as-is for the Iron Warrior hazard stripes
Nope. In my experience, unaltered Averland Sunset is orange, and that's over white. I made the mistake as a noob of putting it over Imperial Primer, and it looked orange-brown, not even a light orange, a dark orange.

A lot of their legions are too bright in my opinion:
>Alpha Legion But still canon-appropriate.
>Space Wolves Fine if you want them to look more like 40k Wolves though, it's just my subjective preference to have them more grey than blue.
>Word Bearers Khorne Red is the colour to use, not Mephiston, particularly jarring when two other legions use Mephiston.
>Salamanders Just my preference again.
>Imperial Fists Imperial Bananas more like

Death Guard are a bit too brown as well for my liking.
The bright palette of whoever (St Duncan?) made this guide makes the black and white legions look great though, and the Ultramarines and EC look nice too.

Are you sure you don't want him to be a Praetor? The UMs have the Praetor-exclusive Mantles of Ultramar, artificer suits with inbuilt FnP and Blind-immunity, retrieved STOLEN from a derelict ship (The Argos) floating on the borders of the Seyrn (Syren?) Reach.

There have been several turns in BL HH lore that - from an admittedly kind of pretentious angle considering this is wargaming background fluff - were terrible narrative choices.
There's this thing that I can't remember the actual name, but 'opposite choices' will do, when a person makes entirely the completely wrong choice, usually out of a misplaced idea to introduce a twist or avoid 'the obvious'. The problem being that 'the obvious' is the clearly satisfying and more correct route, where a twist introduced for negative reasons almost always ends up with worse results than the more 'obvious' route.

>Fulgrim being un-daemoned in the way he was
>Nemiel being killed the way he was
>Damnation of Pythos' existence
>Almost all of Loken's arc after Isstvan III
>The clusterfuck that is Magnus' warning

There's probably a few more. Dropped plot threads aren't these things, however. They're just abandoned ideas, not botched ones.

So are you saying they insisted that a book series advancing the plot in a relatively major way had to be written at a less competent level than the other plot-advancing books?

Couldn't they aim for a less verbose audience with a one-off or a series about a smaller chapter in a self-contained theatre in the 40k setting? Or better yet, comics?

>>51179359
And what do you have to say about that?

Tbh I wouldn't mind if there was a scouring/beast M31+M32 expansion to the FW game.

>>
>>51179370
That I'd kick your ass on the table, bitterboy.
>>
>>51179370
Well, not less competent, more...more accessible. I think it's pretty clear some of the books are written to be easier for younger readers.
I mean, I could be talking out of my ass, but as a poncey wank who actually works in writing, I would say the comprehension level and juvenile (not meant as an insult) tone of I Am Slaughter and TBA series, as well as the trade dress, are attempts to meld Space Marine Battles with the Horus Heresy and generate another kind of franchise style for the publishing house.

They could do a comic sure, but GW always want your money. And like
>>51179347
implies, it seems believable that Dan did a mic drop partially to amuse himself, and the editors were cool with it because they a) probably went WOW AWESOME MUCH BADASS and b) knew they had 11 other books and their stable of B and C squad Yes-Men authors to take the series wherever they wanted after the attention grabbing A-list author made waves.

They do it because of a misplaced sense of stoicism and because of the constant need to remind themselves that they actually lost their Primarch to something as straightforward as a ship boarding action. At least Guilliman had to go toe to toe with a Daemon Primarch while the rest of his smurfs were being overrun by demon spam.

I mean on the one hand it was a horrible way to abort a plot arc they were obviously bringing up, but on the other hand Lion's solution to breaking Nikaea being to kill everyone who thinks that's the case is pretty sweet.

On BL meeting in november(?) they said that 5(?) more books + one that has been announced earlier and we will have Siege. Now they realise shittone of fucking anthologies. When will they realise something new that is not siege?
>>
>>51180298
Nothing, BL is just dropping everything now and skipping right to the Battle for Terra, since they know that's just about the only thing that'll sell a HH book at this point.
>>
How many loyalist marines from the traitor legions survived Isstvan?

If any, what became of them after?
>>
>>51180374
>How many
As many as the fanbase needs to make "your dudes". Except the Word Bearers.

And "we don't talk about" the precise numbers in-canon because it'd be a "shame" for the loyal chapters descended from non-traitorous "orphans" of the traitor legions.
>>
>>51180374
Originally only Garro and the few Deathguard with him made it out alive.

But now that BL made sure Loken survives (I still hate they did that, completely ruined his 'death' scene for me) and some others as well, I don't even know anymore.
Istvann V also went from only two marines making it out alive with the geneseed of as many of their fallen brothers as they could get to appearently a quarter to half of each loyalist legion making it out. At least that's what BL made it feel like, with Istvann V survivors popping up all over the place.
>>
>>51180420
Gotcha.

Tempted to paint my Death Guard all battle damaged, with their right arms painted red, Dusk Raider style, and call them loyalists.
>>
>>51180446
>>51180426

It is going to be a very small force either way, so hopefully it's not too lore rapey.
>>
>>51180374

Extremely few who were present lived through the campaign

luckily the Isstvaan III campaign was long enough that you can have a fully loyalist force representing just that time frame pretty easily.
>>
>>51180426
Follow up question, how many DG survived the Flight if the Eisenstein/Lord of the Flies. Was it just Garro left at the end? What became of them?
>>
>>51180374

Istvan III? 2. Loken and Morturg.

Istvan V? A few thousand or so.
>>
>>51180603
It was something like 40 marines by the time Dorn picked them up. Don't remember them being mentioned again.
>>
>>51180603
There as at least the apothecary that also survived through all of it. But after he couldn't save the guy who turned into the Lord of Flies and all the horrible fighting daemons and those who ones ere brothers, he had enough. The last part about that apothecary is him saying how he will fight no more and dedicate the rest of his life to finding a cure for what ailed that one brother and helping those injured or ill.

There were probably a few others, but I think even BL forgot they excist, it's all about Garro.
>>

>>51180690
I cant remember, why did Morty send Garro and his dudes with some confirmed traitors onto the eisenstein anyway?
>>
So I'm about to inherit like 20 Indominus terminators and I was wondering what exactly is the best way to use them?

I'm making a White Scars list set during their great retreat so they're going to be pretty ramshackled, which gives a good reason why they would use their shittier terminator armor.

I'm just not sure how great they are in that legion though

Mortarion really wanted Garro to stay around, he liked him or something. The idea was that Garro and his pals were looked over by the traitor DG on the same craft and converted later.
>>
>>51180705
Garro was injured and couldn't be sent to Isstvan, there were a cadre of traitors on board with instructions to murder him but Saul warned Garro of the attack.
>>
>>51180795
The murder instructions came from Typhus though, not Mortarion himself. Garro even wanted to be send down to fight, so the injury was no reason to keep him on a space ship.

Yeah, my bad. In my defence, I knew Marr was talking about those legions, I just didn't bother reading anon's first post correctly.

Still think the quote's interesting, don't think there's been an estimate of Isstvan V survivors before that. I think Corax escaped with 3000 or so, so we can guess the rough number of shattered legions without primarch guidance at about 19,000.
>>
>>51182507
Actually in Slaves of Darkness, where the Horus Heresy was written down for the first time (and Horus was just a military commander) only five marines of the loyalist chapters managed to get out of Istvann V alive.

Somehow BL's version with 22.000 marines surviving makes Istvann V sound less catastrophic all of the sudden ...

>there's a website for counting days on a calender
What a time to be alive. What is Feb 4th anyway, is that the open day or general release?
>>
>>51182612
Well, when you think about it, it would be difficult to *completely* erase the legions, and while the romantic image is of everyone bunched into a field Braveheart style, we're really talking about ~240,000 on the loyalist side, maybe two thirds or more of that on the openly traitor side, and then up to twice that on the fake loyalist side. That would make it feasible for some loyalists to escape, particularly if they weren't footsloggers and had heavy armour and/or fast bikes to get out of the way.

Plus even then, the numbers for the Raven Guard put the casualty rate at more than 90%. That's still a devastating catastrophe/absolute carnage.

Is this the same image that triggered the anti-power fist guy(s)? I think trying to milk the negative reaction hurts your PR.
Lovely models though. It's good to see Iron Warriors Tartaros. If I may ask, do you plan to use them, and if so, how? I didn't think Tartaros would look like they embodied the "clunky" spirit of the legion, but these guys definitely look like they feel they have Perty's gaze over their shoulder, ready to punish them if they don't act like their 5++ and AP3 are actually 4++ and AP2. Oh, and a big question, why that specific loadout on your sergeants? Is Volkite that much better than a combi-anything, or do you just like the aesthetic, and also, what's the reasoning for taking a power sword instead of a power maul or something else?

Those are 90% for fun and not for playing because I like the double powerfists tartaros look. I may field them some day, but I had them lying around and found them too sexy to sell them. I might add the Combibolters on their back Predator (the alien, not the tank) style to make them more valid on the table in case I intend to really field them one day. The Sarge loadout is just for the looks, too.

By Iron Hands plot threads, I'm not sure what they meant. Kyme loves getting his hands on other author's cool stuff, so maybe he's nicked Sharrowkyn and those mentalists off of McNeil.
The other IH plots are the undead cyborg dudes and whatever the fuck happened to Meduson.

Rite of War: The Day of Revelation

HQ (100)
>Consul
Jump Pack, Power Weapon

Elites (995)
>Terminator Squad
2 Chainfists, 3 Lightning Claws, Land Raider, Armored Ceramite
>Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought

>Contemptor-Mortis Dreadnought

>Legion Assault Squad

Fast Attack (410)

5 Skyhunters

Heavy Support (815)
>Sicarian Battle-Tank
Armored Ceramite, Lascannon Sponsons
>Sicarian Battle-Tank
Armored Ceramite, Lascannon Sponsons
>Malcador Assault Tank
Demolisher Cannon, Armored Ceramite, Flare Shield, Lascannon Sponsons

I usually don't do dreaddies, but my friends like Fliers a lot so I've gotta be ready for hell. Blobs are also common, so it'll be fun ripping and blowing them down.

2 big concerns:
-Is the Malcador worth it? I just got it, but it's one hell of a points sink (then again it won't fucking die, so that's cool)
-can I fuck tanks enough? AV14 is gonna be dicey, but I've got a good amount of Lascannons.
Maybe invest in some Inferno pistols and laugh at pooping open their LoW's with troops?

As opposed to a Leviathan? Sure, but he's expensive and takes valuable slots.
>ass cannons
Are they that bad? I mean shit, 12 S6 Rending at BS5 looks golden for anti-air.

What about the Jetbikes? I could drop some of them if I really should get a Praetor.
>>
>>51176874
Get out of here Ward, you have no place here.
>>
>>51186916
From my personal experiences I have found the perdition blade to be more valuable.

Podding in dreads can work very well. A podded leviathan is hilarious.

I was mainly memeing about the asscannons. You could switch them out for cc weps and undersling some cannons, but you will get dirty looks for that.
>>
>>51186916
Different anon here, the problem with relying on assault cannons for antiair in 30k is that some people will bring nothing but AV12, 4HP fliers, so you're left fishing for 6s. The extra punch of a dorito can make all the difference.
>>
Which legion should I choose if I think armor support is for regular humans?

I like the idea of infantry, some rhinos, dreadnoughts, drop pods, and maybe an allied Titan if I need extra tank smashing. Is there a legion with a philosophy along these lines, or at least one who could pull it off?
>>
>>51186977

Death Guard it is.
>>
>>51187027
Yeah, but I figure weight of fire will do wonders; 12 shots is good, 10 will statistically hit, and a six means an auto-pen, which can mean hell for fliers.

Worst case scenario I use the Sicarians, but I think I'll be okay.

I would do a Dorito, but I've yet to get one :'(

>>

No Master of the legion to allow a RoW, used 5 elite slots (mortis dreads aren't Talons).

Fix that and you're looking an ok list I think. Just don't rely too much on rending for strong anti tank.
>>
>>51187038
Blood Angels.
>>
>>51186669

Seems like your assault squads are underpowered to me. The whole point of Day of Revalation is that it gives you a strong T1 DS for all your jump troops, why would you then gimp them by not giving them more than one power weapon, any inferno pistols, a buffed up sergeant, or combat shields? That's without getting into whether you should be sticking additional characters with them too. You seem to be spending most of your points on termies who don't really synergise with the rite. I know you might be working mostly with what you've got, but an alternative RoW might be better.
>>
>>51186977
>>51187054
Fair point. So how's about I drop 2 Jetbikes and the Consul, and get this-

>Legion Praetor
Jump Pack, Iron Halo, Perdition Blade, Melta Bombs

Sound good? I'm always distrusting of expensive HQ's because one bad hit at S8+ costs me a lot of points.

>>51187163
I get MotL from the consul, Apothecaries are one slot, Termies are one, and Dreads are two. And I'm not necessarily screwed for anti-armor, I've got a fuckload of Lascannons.

>>51187192
My though was a turn-2 fuckfest, though I'm more and more considering dropping some dickbikes and investing in gear. The idea was everything charges up turn 1, Assault boys hide in ruins to avoid heavy fire, and turn 2 the vehicles unload hell, Termies slice (maybe I should get more chainfists) up vehicles/2+, and assault bog down and chop up whoever looks mean. I'll take a look and see how to empower them better.

Maybe drop one squad of bikes, give each squad power weapons, and give all the termies chainfists?
>>
>>51187323
Oh shit, I didn't see I had 2 terminator squads! Fuck, forget one of those exists
>>
>>51187038
Death Guard, Word Bearers, or Human Wave IW.
>>
>>51187038
Last of the Serrated Sun Word Bearers could work. Gal Vorbak troops, which frees up the Elites slot, and everything must be podded or deepstriked.
>>
How well would the various Baneblade variant weapons work as Medusa cannon mounted on Basilisks? I thought it would make them all look a bit different, which is nice, and a few even look like they might slot neatly onto the stub of the Earthshaker.
>>
>>51186669
Weird formatting... I'd switch it and greentext the options rather than the actual entires.

Anyway, those assault squads aren't killy enough. You really can't count on dudes with bolt pistols and chainswords to do much harm, even with the to-wound boost. The 5 elite slots has been pointed out. Drop something to add power weapons and inferno pistols to your assault squads.

Are the jetbikes just taking heavy bolters? I'd make them squads of 6 (or 7) and 3 and take one-in-three volkite or plasma. Not melta because the heavy bolters would go to waste - they're an anti-infantry unit. You have a lot of anti-infantry so you might consider switching one of the Sicarans to a Venator.

Ryan Kimmel (of the Radio Free Isstvan podcast - of all the podcasts he's the rules expert and master list writer) runs Armored Breakthrough Blood Angels. Lots of predators, lots of bikes, just barely meets the more-infantry-than-tanks rule. He still thinks assault marines are overcosted compared to tacticals in a rhino so I don't think he runs any.
