If you were running a game where the characters will commonly find bows, duel pistols, rifles, crossbows, slingshots, etc. How many different skills would you need to divide all the ranged weapon proficiencies?
The game im running is ryuutama; and all the weapon categories it has is Light Blade, Big Blade, Axes, Polearms, Unarmed and Ranged.
But it doesnt seem right that a hunter who uses a bow to hunt animals is proficent with a duel pistol, arguably a rifle. Similarly, a noble who is trained in duels should not be proficent on bow hunting.
Thoughts?

just have guns be separate from other ranged weapons

Eh, whatever.
Rather than try to juggle multiple proficiencies, just give everyone a penalty to use weapons they're unfamiliar with. After a while of consistent use, lower the penalty until they're considered proficient.

Who cares?
Just do >>51149237
>simple ranged
>complex ranged
How easy is that?

Just split it by class of weapon: bows, crossbows, guns, throwing weapons. Done.

honestly a crossbow is VERY close to a gun in how it's shot.

isn't ryuutama more about being comfy and travelling? And also a japanese game, so i guess that's just the design philosophy. I could easily see a hunter use a musket, think modern woodsman or a hunter.

Mate, hunting was THE sport of nobility.
If I had to divide, I'd do Bows, Throwing, and then all Shooty Things (crossbows, pistols, rifles) together. A crossbow is very close to a musket operation-wise, and pistols are just short muskets, duelling or not - same principle of use really.

thats what I was thinking. Dividing ranged between:
Bows > bows and slingshots
guns > crossbows and guns
