Im going to get a lot of hate. But many of Isaac Asimov's stuff. Even "The foundation" can be classed in the later books as science fantasy. (Foundation and Earth. )

But /tg/ loev Foundation

I do too. Its basically were 40k seems to have gotten most of its ideas from. Its more so that some people would find it offensive to relate Science fantasy to Asimov.

Lord of Light by Zelazny is a not!india colonized world where the original starship crew sets themselves up as gods, stealing the cloak of the hindu pantheon using reincarnation machines to stay alive and then banhammering any kind of tech their subjects think up

40k copied a lot of shit.
One of the main cited references is 2000 AD, though.
Serious literature wasn't a big part of it, at best you'd get Dune and such.

The Endless franchise; personally my favorite handling of precursor races in fiction.

Really hoping that the Horatio or Harmony make it into Endless Space 2, they were really cool.
Also, It's been my personal desire for ages to run a game set in the Endless Universe, and the new species they've been introducing are just making it more and more appetizing (Finally a new antagonizing spacefaring race aside from the UE, Horatio, Hissho and Cravers!)
