Has anyone wanted to run a game, or has run a game, in the criminally underdeveloped setting known as Star Fox?

Yes. I used the Simple d6 System (3e) rather than say GURPS because I could tell my players were not up for the manuals upon manuals, and in the games, all the characters were fairly generalist with only slight specialization, so I did not want to encourage point buy minmaxing. The easiest distro to find is on 1d4chan. Link for the lazies: https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Simple_D6_-_Third_Edition

My friends and I had just been binge-watching Dirty Jobs, and inspired by that, the players made a clean-up and recovery / salvage crew named Star Beetle, as in Dung Beetle which was their mascot. The characters were:

Pat the Hippopatimus, the acrofatic muscle guy who mostly regulated himself to operating the cranes and exogear for pulling in salvage. He tried mercenary work a la Star Fox but found that the lack of work between major conflicts was terrible, and he always burned through all his money before the next big score because he could not into finances. So to hell with that, he was going to get an honest job clearing space of clutter and valuable components that really should not just be left in space.

The next characters were Boris the Boar who got geekboners over minerals and became the accountant because no one else knew how to money IC or OOC. He was recruited by Pat.

Next was Rocky the Raccoon who first proposed Nigger the Coon but switched immediately after he got Carlos-tier groans from us. He mostly regulated himself with navigating but put a skill in operating the equipment. Also recruited by Pat.

Paco the Possum was a stowaway who went exploring and then reflexively played dead when the ship's engine started. They found him later, and eventually they allowed him to stay because he was the only one who could cook more than just warming up protein bars. He jack-of-all-trades'ed his way through most stuff which added up to repairing and dismantle things a bit better than the others.

Honestly the stigma of furry shit that setting can lead too tends to deter people from it.

So with the motley crew assembled, they went to work. They hacked away at floating debris, shot down some scavengers, got into a brief scuffle over salvage rights... which got defused by Paco giving the other team real food because it turns out almost no space-fairer can cook anything that isn't ready after defrosting. They came to an equitable arrangement because the salvage was obviously way too big for either of their piddly ships to take everything.

Boris identified a broken module that at first looked like junk but had a valuable reagent in it which was worth quite a bit as a valuable ingredient. They sailed home, upgraded their scanners before anything else, and set out again.

They find another derelict vessel blown to pieces- something where there never seem to be enough people to clean up in the vastness of space- and tether their ship to it. After some searching, they find another salvage crew's ship. Their scanners were focused on tracking ships but terrible at anything else, so the players determined that they must just follow other crews around and poach. Peeved, the players started searching for their competition.

It was then that they found one of the other crew, a weasel dressed in red. They pointed guns at each other, and the weasel shouted at them to "Get out!" and various things along the same lines. Before things could come to blows though, an unknown, quick, and aggressive organism flies out of a rubbish heap and tries to wrap it's many legs around the Weasel. He shoots it, where it explodes and sprays something corrosive all over him which was potent enough to melt several misshapen holes through the poor bastard.

The players quite reasonably decided to nope right out of there, but they were cut off from either vessel by more enemies. They jumped a door with their emergency battery (something they bought a couple missions ago with the express purpose of giving doors and things enough juice to open up enough space for a crowbar.

Stop playing with faggots?

They managed to get into a room and seal the door behind them. It was a control room, but it had no power, and they were pretty much caged with a few doors to choose from. Instead, the Boris and Paco worked to seeing if searched, found, and immediately started working on the black box. The cypher was not one used by commercial ships and was obviously military but thankfully old enough to be crackable. While the autotool being used to decode the black box was working, there was a thunk from above. The party starts sweating.

Because the black box is big and bulky, none, even the strongest character Pat, are certain they can carry it and flee whatever that was. Another thunk. They point their rifles up at the ceiling and back off while they pray the decoder finishes.

Just as it dings and the party gets a partial infodump, a much bigger creature pokes it's ugly, bean-shaped head through the roof and attempts to snatch one of the party. They had a door ready to be jumped and pried open... and then they critfail their roll. SD6 has some fun rules for critfails.

The ship powers on completely and the engine revs. Rocky notes some kind of launch procedures from the way things are going, and they high tail it with the creature on their asses all the way back. They lay some wild fire over their shoulders and one of them even manages to hit, but it doesn't do much. They manage to get into their ship safely, but they do not manage to separate themselves from the ship before it's engine revs and space disappears from around them.

Was working on a Star Fox homebrew for Myriad Song a while back, since it's made by the same people who did Ironclaw (and the two systems share many game mechanics, so it's easy to put a bunch of animal people into MS no problem). Unfortunately, Myriad Song doesn't really do ship combat, which is kind of a big thing in the Star Fox universe.

Been thinking about picking it up and retooling it for Traveller instead.

The inertia hits them like Mike Tyson's fist if it were attached to a meteorite, and they all pass out. They awaken to an unfamiliar starscape, hurling through space. They're forced to sit tight because the ship is way, way too dangerous to get into right now. Eventually, they sling into orbit around an unfamiliar planet that is definitely not one known to Lylat, and the ship powers down. The planet below does not respond to hailing. They cautiously peak into the ship that just decided to turn itself on and cautiously enter. The creatures that were loose seem to be gone now, and they find the cause of their sudden arrival, some kind of drive which they have no idea what it does.So they spend some time pouring over the notes while they try to figure out what to do.

They think about making planetfall, but one of them finds the sense to take some measurements of the planet. It's gravitational force is somewhere between three and four times that of Corneria's. The planet's diameter is about twice that of Corneria's and it must be denser. They do not relish the idea of walking around that atmosphere and have some doubts about their ship being able to make escape velocity easily.

They guess that the drive was some kind of FTL drive after figuring out that this was one of Andross' fleet from the war, and he was always cooking up crazy crap like this. They have no means of contacting the world below despite it appearing to have greenery and life. The ship doesn't want to turn on again, and Rocky has no idea how to pilot it. With some lucky rolls and intuition, they manage to sling one of the four drives to their ship and reverse engineer the coordinates of their home planet.

They manage to just barely get back in one piece and make a fortune. They're quite happy.

Then story arc 2, a few years later, FTL jumps are made repeatedly into Lylat. The heavyworlders were angry about the kinetic missile launched into a major population zone with living weapons.

The aliens DO attempt to parlay, but the lack of common language leads to their demands and anger mistaken for aggressive posturing, and they get shot down because Corneria is very used to evil invaders. The party are not mercs or soldiers and don't want to be a part of the war, but they salvage quite a bit and learn about the aliens and run like hell from them a few times during the salvage missions. The aliens' ships are mostly garbage with explosive-tipped, kinetic, and nuclear missiles. They're by far primitive compared to the Cornerians, but the aliens themselves are absolute terrors.Monstrously strong, and on the surface they John Carter around and wreak havoc by virtue of being monstrously strong. They wear bulky space suits though and tend to kamikaze or allahu akhbar if they get cornered, so little is learned about their biology... until the very end when it comes out that the weird junker crew who just happens to have the same FTL drive with the same design that these aliens have- which really that drive was way too advanced for them- and figure out they were responsible. They try to explain, but people are angry and want someone to blame. They reluctantly turn over their own drive to the Cornerian military because for some reason NO ONE THOUGHT TO DO THAT EVEN AFTER THE WAR STARTED.

War escalates. The Salvage business booms. They do well despite desperately avoiding a military tribunal.

The aliens were humans if that weren't obvious. There were no official metrics on the planets in-game, and I never subscribed to Nintendo Power. No extended universe comics for me. I just made Lylat Mars-like in composition with an actual atmosphere and resources, and after I did that, I got nostalgic about "A Princess of Mars."

Looks like it was a fun game, well played.

Also, mandatory "A fox in space" for this thread.

I have. Problem is that the setting doesn't have much plot other than Space Hitler wants to conquer the galaxy. Maybe set the game in the aftermath of the war? (And ignore every other Star Fox game after 64)
>>
>>51122448
To be perfectly honest, that was all you needed for a videogame in the glory days.Attempts to put plot in videogames has created some of the worst cancer because you can either have a good to great linear story or a fuckfest because we can't really do reactive worlds yet in a way to create story until someone makes a West World prototype that's not shit.

Plot is easy, as long as it thematically would fit in the Star Fox universe. But what systems are best for starship combat?

>>51123598
X-Wing
Silent Death
Crimson Skies
Star Warrior
