>As the Unification Wars came to an end and the Great Crusade began, the Emperor gave them the title of the Dusk Raiders, a nod to their use of the ancient Albian tactic of conducting major ground attacks at twilight when the shift of light confused an enemy's watch and gathering shadow would advance across open ground.[16a]

How do you think a coding and/or physical duel between Magi would work? Would they just stand there doing he psychic nosebleed thing until one collapsed?
My personal "fun theory" is that Magi fighting try to hack into and steal information on upcoming attacks from their opponents, who can block that or drown it in chaff information, usually useless memories of staring at dropship walls or doing paperwork. Thing is, eventually the Magos will run out of those, since they process data extremely fast, so the longer a fight lasts the more they learn about each other and their secrets. This means after a while the Magos will have to pick between giving the enemy information on his moves or vital non-immediate secrets and information.

BFG and Armada has plenty of Imperial and Chaos ships that existed during that time. I don't think dedicated Marine vessels like we have in 40k were a thing back then, outside of Legion flagships and such. I'm sure for the most part, as evident by CSM shit usage, Legions used same ships as Army.
I'm sure all ships are capable of planetary assault, since drop pods should be pretty universal on ships, even if Marines are the only ones that get to use them in the game. I suspect ships with launch bays are best, since they got capacity for lots of transports. The Terminus Est was said to be a very capable, purpose built planetary assault ship and it sports a ton of launch bays. The Despoiler class ships were based on its design (though thousands of years after the Heresy).

It was a combination of the designs like those used by Chaos in BFG, Battle Barges, Strike Cruisers, assorted Imperial Navy ships, and Glorianas typically leading their fleets. Chaos BFG ships are just ancient Imperial designs, though the Imperium largely abandoned that style design after the Heresy (iirc there's one type still serving in the Navy by 40k)
This was the Terminus Est, once upon a time during the Great Crusade.
>>51043934
Technically any ship has a launch bay, because shuttles and transports have to land somewhere to load and unload their cargo.
I'm sure, if nothing else, that you could just whip up a custom ship design based on like a light cruiser that has the capability to launch ground assaults, if such a vessel is paramount.
>>51044084
Don't you love how smoke goes upwards in space so you gotta excuse the ship is moving downwards and similar?
>>51043727
>>51043686
They've been vague about ship details. Some of it just seems to happen by accident, e.g. each legion was given a Gloriana-class battleship as a flagship and most look like Emperor-class battleships, but FW drew the IW's as an upsized Space Marine battle barge. Some of it seems to be deliberate so that they can get into more detail in the future.
Another mistake (predating the HH game) was that the BFG fluff said the Despoiler-class battleship entered Imperial service in M35 or M36... but then they released the Terminus Est, a Despoiler-class battleship that fought in the Great Crusade and the Heresy (it was Calas Typhon's ship). They quickly "fixed" it by saying that in M35 or M36 they found the plans for the Terminus Est and created the Despoiler-class from it, and all of them turned to Chaos due to some inherent flaw.
If you look at Battlefleet Gothic Imperial Navy, Space Marine, and Chaos ships, you can probably use any of those in your legion fleet. Unlike in M41, legions definitely used cruisers other than just Strike Cruisers. BL novel covers mostly show Imperial Navy-style ships (vertical armored prows). FW's black books show IN-style escorts, an IF grand cruiser that looks similar to the Vengeance-class ships (transitional between IN-style and Chaos-style), and lots of battle barges.
They'd all launch drop pods.
>>51044084
>Chaos BFG ships are just ancient Imperial designs, though the Imperium largely abandoned that style design after the Heresy
Except plenty of the ships used by CSM are post-Heresy creations. And some of the ships used by the Imperium are pre-Heresy. So this divide is incorrect.

>>51044090
>>51044117

Not really. I just went through the BFG and Armada rulebooks... it's true of the Planet Killer, which is a one-off, and of the Idolator-class escort designed and built on Xana II.
The Infidel-class raider almost counts, but it was designed for Imperial use and then the plans were stolen.

I'm actually not looking for models. Just information on them. I'm running a Black Crusade game during the Horus Heresy and I don't need stats so much as I just need some basic stuff like names and primary function. Still, what I've gathered thus far has been supremely helpful.

>>51044128
>>51044335
I think he is arguing the technicality that they're 'post Heresy', because some of the Chaos ships are from M32-M36. But it doesn't change the fact that the Imperium has a bad history with these designs of ships and by 40k has almost completely abandoned them, although they once commonly employed such designs (and similar ones) during the Great Crusade and Heresy.
So for the purposes of the original anon asking about ships, >>51044148 you have plenty of options for ships, and even small cruisers or escorts would have drop pods and hangars available for use.

>>51044583
IIRC, the chief impetus for most of the IN's transition away from the blade-like "Chaos" design had more to do with changing tactics and aging vessels, with some notable exceptions like the Despoiler and Repulsive classes, both of which had some internal flaw that made their gellar fields flicker way beyond tolerance.
This is mainly hinted at in the fluff for the grand cruisers, but back in ye olden days of the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, IN doctrines was centered on heavy "linebreaker" ships (like the aforementioned grand cruisers, but also the Glorianas, Ironclads, and more "typical" plowshare cruisers), which plowed forward straight into the enemy formation under the covering fire of the rest of the fleet. The "Chaos" designs, being optimized for firepower over protection, fit this role.
The change to the modern IN designs seems to have been fairly long-going and dates all the way to before the HH, as hinted by transitional Vengeance grand cruiser, which had an armoured prow that wasn't much stronger than the rest of the armour. The blade-like ships remained in service for millennia, however, with the Murder-class cruiser in particular remaining *the* ship-of-the-line of Battlefleet Obscuras until roughly M38.

There's a lot of ship classes that only existed during the Heresy and were dropped soon after. Galleass of War is a ship class that doesn't exist in M41, for instance.
I've been heavily into doing 30k BFG for a long time, though I think the rules would need to be tweaked to account for the more deadly weaponry such as Rad-Phage, Nega-Phosphex Webs, Macro-Lances and similar.

>Galleass
That's just a High Gothic way of saying Galley
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galley
>Galleys were the warships used by the early Mediterranean naval powers, including the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans. They remained the dominant types of vessels used for war and piracy in the Mediterranean Sea until the last decades of the 16th century. As warships, galleys carried various types of weapons throughout their long existence, including rams, catapults and cannons, but also relied on their large crews to overpower enemy vessels in boarding actions. They were the first ships to effectively use heavy cannons as anti-ship weapons. As highly efficient gun platforms they forced changes in the design of medieval seaside fortresses as well as refinement of sailing warships.
I doubt they referr to actual Galeas..ses.

>>51044635
As >>51044583 surmised, I misinterpreted you and thought you were saying that they were developed by Chaos-aligned forces. You're right, it looks like there might not have been any ships in the style of BFG Chaos medium cruisers during the Heresy.
>>51044858
The Galleass was an actual warship class that could be called heavy galleys. They were used famously at the battle of Lepanto.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galleass
>>51044800

>>51044858

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galleass
>>51044816
Looking at that list, it's good to note that Retribution, Victory, Emperor, Lunar and Cobra all have the "modern" armoured prow (well, I think Cobra just has the look, but in terms of rules is equally strong all around).
>>51044800

>>51044816
Excellent picture friend. I am the original anon that was asking about ships so thanks man.
>>51044859
Man...
Yes there were! My point is that both "Imperial" and "Chaos" ships existed during and after 30k. That all BFG Chaos ships aren't pre-Heresy era ships Imperium doesn't make anymore and all armoured prow BFG Imperial ships are post-Heresy creations. Armoured prows and non-armoured prows existed during 30k and both ships were made after the Heresy.
The only reason there's a distinct divide is because of visuals. Just like how CSM got those big backpacks and horns on their helmets, because otherwise they'd just be space marines in a different colour.
>>51044948
Whats wrong with that scheme? The marine is either a normal veteran thats wearing the 1st company colors or he is a member of the 1st company thats been seconded to another company to work as a veteran.
>>51044948
Actually managing to re-create that colour scheme is usually the bigger problem :^)

I'd say the Galleass is a ship type, not a class. In this case, a large ship based on a freighter that's been given a bunch of weapons. I'm sure they do exist in M41, even if they aren't in the BFG game. A lot of Rogue Trader cruisers are probably closer to a galleass than a conventional cruiser.
How many points are 5 deathshroad terminators and 5 grave warden terminators? I'm having trouble finding their point totals
>>51045218
It helps that it's mentioned that the Galleass is a favored ship of Rogue Traders in the Crusade and Heresy period.

What about countermeasures, like feeding scrapcode similar to a SQL injection attack? The entry field thinks it's data, but it contains hidden code, the Magos' parser picks up the code and starts executing without his consent, and then he poops his pants. It's also a pretty simple kind of hack that can be protected against easily but lazy (or junior) Magos wouldn't bother and get fried.
>>51045461
Easily the Alpha legion one. I want to like the Iron Hands one, but something about it just doesn't work for me, and I've never really seen it painted it a way that makes it look good. The Raven Guard one is probably hands down my favorite loyalist contemptor.

Sons of Horus are cool too. More interesting paint scheme than Luna Wolves imo, and more bits/decals available. I'm tempted to start them for the Reavers alone. It's also flexible in that you can use whatever ratio of green-to-black that you want (1st company being all black, Reavers depicted with some black and some green, etc.).

2) Find a mechanical pencil (with a metal tip) of your desired rivet size, ensure there's no lead inside.
3) Dip the pencil nib into water, remove excess.
4) Press the pencil tip with gentle force perpendicular to the greenstuff to ensure rivets come out as straight as possible.
5) Take hobby knife and carefully remove excess greenstuff from around the rivet.
For best results, use freshly-mixed greenstuff with a higher portion of yellow-to-blue.
If the rivet comes out a bit crooked, dampen your finger and gently brush the top of the rivet into its proper position.

Anon, the Imperial Fists aren't perfectionists at all andin fact that describes IW alongside EC. They're simply quiet most of the time, do their duty and they love it, that's all.
But I believe they could indeed fall to Slaanesh, just not legion-wide.
Some, like Sigismund's Templars and Rann's Executioners, would be definitely Khornate, while Excoriators would be Slaaneshi or possibly even Nurglite, given how not only they do ritual scarring like Angron or Lucius, but also praise battle damage like the Death Guard.
They would be undivided and in fact there's some alternate fan setting where Dorn is...Praetorian of Chaos or something.
>>51047820
Iron Warriors, because they can throw twice/thrice as many bodies at the enemy?
>>51047494
Ultramarines and Emperors Children are both perfectionists, Ultramarines would fall to Slaanesh and IF would be undivided.
>>51048495

Meanwhile, the Ultramarines were also busy...legion building.
Imagine if Horus had ordered the UMs to fight the Hrud or if Emps had ordered them to fight in Rangda.

The Ultras probably could have done it better as they're not attritiontards.

It may be how they were written, but intrinsically the nature of their powers makes them a little Mary Sue.
They can mend themselves from quasi death, blindly shoot their guns and still hit, dodge bullets and blows without having to try much, fry brains by looking at enemies, and so on.
At equal numbers they'd basically shit over any other legion. But they don't have equal numbers. They're smaller than all except the Raven Guard, they're crippled by mutation, and they are forced to play it safe.

Because you know they dude who didn't want it but just ordered something will win, whilst the dude that only ordered something because he wanted the prize will get nothing. And then there's people who will split up their order to give up free shipping in order to get more entries.
It's a great way to boost earnings I guess.
Anyone ever used Javelin Land Speeders?
>>51054857
No, nobody ever has.
>>51054857
anon, tell us more about this mythical jah-veline?
>>51055150
I'm supposed to be playing 30k, but this one land speeder keeps kicking my ass.
>>51054857
They're real gud
>>51054857
Memes aside it's a fantastic little model that is pretty safe from being assaulted and has outflank on a fast skimmer body with the ability to take multiple anti tank weapons and is immune to bolters from the front and sides. It's p good.
>>51055150
it's an 11/11/10 skimmer with 2 hull points and everyones favourite CYCLONE MISSILE LAUNCHER (twin linked!) and a heavy bolter, all for the low cost of 55 points.
but WAIT THERES MORE!
it's also basically BS5, can outflank if you really want it to and attackers suffer a -2 to hit in assaults unless its been immobilised.
>>51055879
I was mainly wondering if it was worth taking 2 of them or if it's one of those things thats like:
"max the squad or don't take it at all."
>>51055921
2 works fine. They're a solid FA choice if you don't mind how bad they GBP->points wise. Although you'll never have issue putting them in any list you want
>my first solar auxilia arrived today
huh so this is what normal human proportions look like in 1/35
gw could learn from this
>>51055896
The issue is two hull points and 55 points.
Why do these 1d4 articles explicitly say the Stormlord ISNT an assault vehicle? Are they retarded or am I?
>is open-topped for embarking and disembarking
>so when you disembark, it counts as open topped
>and you can charge after disembarking from an open-topped vehicle
>>51045461
I love the NL one with the dual canons
>>51056631
because it is under the acces point entry
it is simply referring to where you can get in and out of the model
the assault transport rule is a separate rule and is conferred by the open topped vehicle type , the storm lord is a normal transport
>>51056567
Doesn't matter, you don't send them out with the expectation of surviving more than 1-2 turns.
Cyclones + 2x HK or Cyclones + MM. Figure out what's vulnerable, and fuck it up real good. For example, artillery that ironfire fuckers love so much
>>51056681
My question is does it not mention that it is an assault transport or does it actively say that it isn't? If the former than nothing is wrong although it should be mentioned that it is effectively an assault transport. If the latter than while still technically correct it is actively misleading.
Tester model for my upcoming DG complete.
I'll be using the proper resin DG bits for my actual lads, just thought I'd use some plastic for a tester,
>>51056681
>it is simply referring to where you can get in and out of the model
That's your guess, we don't have access to the design notes or whatever, so we really can't say what the designers were referring to when they put together the stormlord's page like that.
>>51056681
>because it is under the access point entry
Well where else would they put it?
I figured it was supposed to confer the benefits of open-topped without the damage downsides.
Also:
>assault vehicle is conferred by the open topped type
>stormlord is open topped for embarking and disembarking
>so when people are embarking or disembarking, it has the open topped type
>therefore it has the assault vehicle special rule
>>51056788
If you look in the BRB, the bit that says how to embark/disembark onto/from an open topped vehicle is a separate bit from where it says that open topped vehicles are assault transport.
Stormlords only use the bit about disem/embarking.
>>51056803
How do you get the armour to look worn? I've shaded my recesses well enough with Agrax so there's depth, but I can't seem to get that faded look - mine are too uniform
>>51053968
I don't know.
We do know he pretty much coughed out his lungs on Barbarus and he has wounds that would never heal...unless that meant the psychological wounds.
Then again, if he had respiratory problems then he wouldn't be carrying around Barbaran air, but rather clean air.
I think he's simply willingly continuing the exposure because he believes endurance makes you stronger. Like saying "yes, I still got it".
>>51056875
I know but it is still retarded to actively say it isn't an assault vehicle. While technically correct it is misleading.
>>51056879
Do you mean the chipping effect or the different tones of the armour?
>>51056925
>it is still retarded to actively say it isn't an assault vehicle
But it isn't, so, it's not misleading at all.
>>51056944
Six of one...
I'd just be interested to see how you do it really
I'm cool with my Mk IV marines being as clean as they are because I'm representing mine as early traitors and the Mk IV would still be new enough, but I'm about to do 40 or so Mk III footsloggers who absolutely have to be dirty and shitty and battle worn
Hi anons, got 3500 points of legio cybernetica, what would you recommend I do from here? Considering either buying artillery batteries and thallax, to go reductor or starting a legion army.
>>51057000
>what would you recommend I do from here?
Paint it.
>>51056978
The chipping effect is done with the hairspray and salt technique, the muddy colouring is done by mixing up washes of different consistency and putting them in different parts of the armour. Some deliberate pooling was also involved.
>>51054383
>>You know that IH motto
>>Iron within Iron without?
>>No, the flesh is weak
>>Never heard of it
Kek
Whatever the original meaning was or who said it, none can deny the IH made that phrase their own and live by what they understood of it.
Because the IH do hate weakness the same way the WE hate a mortal's un-chainaxed face, they think the ones who can't protect themselves are a burden on the rest and are basically the opposite of the Raven Guard with the same colour scheme.
Honestly, progressively inhuman as they were, it's no wonder why some thought they could be swayed to the traitor's cause.
But Ferrus had his heart in the right place, for he was based.
>>51056821
>>51056807
if they wanted it have assault under special rules maybe ? embarking and disembarking from an open topped vehicle is separate from an assault vehicle
open topped specifically refers to it's acces points , assault vehicle is a separate rule conferred by the open topped vehicle class , which the storm lord isn't
thinking it has assault is wishful thinking on your parts
next thing you're going to say it can always fire its gun twice because super heavies always count as having remained stationary
feel free to send gw an email and hear it from them though
>>51056261
I don't mind particularly much because I love the model, just trying to figure out if I want to go ultra minimal with my bikes to fit some in.
I kind of want a Legions allied detatchment for my Xana II mechanicum army, and I'm thinking about modelling them as servitorised/reanimated Marines controlled with cybernetics, with servitor heads and Xana shoulderpads and such. Would that be acceptable or would that be Model Heresy or something? Also, what Legion would be most suitable ruleswise? Was considering Iron Hands or Iron Warriors, since I want them to be tough. Was planning on some anti-air, maybe a Mortis Dread, and one of the heavy tanks from the HS slot.
>>51057184
Aww this is making the Leviathan the better supertransport but out of making the Stormlord a worse one..
Boooo
>>51057184
>maybe?
Exactly, it's a case of "maybe". You can't tell exactly what the designers were thinking when they wrote the rules that way, there were enough surprises in the FAQs to show you can't always guess what the designers were thinking.
>>51052563
>Chaos Sp- one of those things.
Wow, been a while since I've seen that meme.
>>51054041
God the IH one is so bad. It is the only one that is just bad. It is so plain.
>>51057338
i was being sarcastic
when have you ever heard of a special rule not being under the special rules section ?
i agree with the faq bullshittery though i think that was more the case of them realizing how idiotic/unbalanced some of their rules are and changing them
like i said feel free to ask gw
if it does count as an assault vehicle let us know cause that would be a real boon for my veletarii
>>51057209
Mate, you want anti air in the army that gave you BS5 3 shot haywire Vultarax? In exchange for a shitty rending prayer that does not jink, reduce cover saves, and can be blown up by an unlucky hit?
>>51057020
Cheers, all painted and based though
>>51057467
lmao I just noticed the IF and IH have almost the same chest icon
>>51057467
>DG
i know it suits them but it's also very plain
>>51057515
Oh wow, it is literally fist clenched vs unclenched.
>>51057581
But thats the point. It is the most plain but it is the only one that can't really be called too plain imo, cuz DG. That one is all about the weathering.
>>51057475
>special rules not in the section
Well, in this exact sort of case where another rule has multiple sub-rules.
I'll shoot em an email and see I guess.
>>51057515
