I don't think we're actually missing any archetypes in my meta. One of our players always has a new deck to play so we always get something a little different each time we play. It is usually always a combo deck, but the combos are at least new and unique when playing. As a group, most of us focus on one player who is usually never a threat (this might be because he's ganged up on all the time). I would actually like to see him win a game at some point.

I usually only play aggro, but I am working on a Breya combo deck since 1) I've never played combo 2) I'm being unoriginal about what combos to use and 3) she's new! However, I am looking for recommendations for the deck since I don't think I have the kinks worked out yet. Any advice would be appreciated.

There my meta is literally only control. Everyone runs counterspells.dek, everyone has brutal black hand control tech, it's just vicious trying to play anything that isn't specifically geared to fuck those kind of decks.

Not an archetype per se, but more counterspells. I think there's a grand total of two decks at my shop that run more than a handful, which means chaos, grouphug, and stax players have pretty much free reign to fuck up a table.

EDH has more margin for error because of the singleton nature and the larger deck size (one land too many/few won't lose you nearly as many games and a a wrong card is 1% of the deck while a wrong playset is 6.667%). You also have a relatively stable card pool and meta, which is not the case with the sanctioned 60 card formats.

Really want to try running Isamaru Voltron with a handful of pillowfort cards like Ghostly Prison, Norn's Annex and Sphere of Safety to keep people off me. Any ideas of other good shit to throw in? Control them with some soft stax or full on Orb Kit + Stasis.

Soft Stax (idk what the actual term for this stuff is) like Authority of the Consuls, Blind Obedience and Kismet.

Anyone get some good plays in recently?

Baral and Sram seem solid. Baral works in any deck using blue, but can pilot the deck as well. Sram makes sense in any voltron deck that can use white. Yahenni is interesting. I like the hate, built-in protection and sac-outlet, but it only seems worthwhile as the general. Rishkar is average, Hope is bizarre, and Kari Zev's doesn't seem worth using in any deck (even outside of EDH), but the monkey token seems humorous.

This is a good Standard creature. The menace makes it tempting to attack and get a monkey buddy. It aslo has a lot of synergy with the block's mehcanical theme (permanents coming in and out of play).

As for EDH, it doesn't look too hot.

Run with war storm surge, Purphoros, impact tremors, anything else I can find.

I think Kari is a strong, psuedo "3"/3 for only 2 with killer key words that should make her cost more, and a free etb.

Mine's probably closest to this, but I'm not literally made of money so I don't have all of the combos that are in this (LED/salvagers). But pretty much everything can be swapped for something more budget. LED/salvagers becomes Eldrazi displacer/Ashnod's Altar, all the expensive tutors become less expensive ones, timetwister becomes windfall/timespiral etc. That's what's nice about eggs, the shell is cheap and the rest can be upgraded as you go.

I tried building eggs combo more all-in, all the artifact mana cost reducers, high density of cantripping artifacts, and then stuff like future sight and Vedalken archmage that let you storm through your whole deck finding scrap mastery and krark clan ironworks, etc and Faith's reward, but also running Breya combo staples like Ashnod's altar and Nim death mantle

It was cool and could win very early a lot of the time m, but sometimes you draw the wrong combination of stuff in the opener and don't do much that game. sometimes the storm plan fizzles because of land flood, but you can't run too few lands in 4 colors or you jammed up mana wise

Because she costs six. I have a Bruna deck, it's fun to play but it's hard to hang when you gotta cast a six cmc creature, have a haste enabler and either no one has removal or you have countermagic. When she swings, you kill people but in my experience you don't get to swing a lot. I think in a slower meta she is probably a beast, but so many games I cast her, she eats some removal through my countermagic and then someone wins that turn because removal and counterspells got used.

there are basically a billion options, and it depends on your gameplan which ones you want to use.

there are slow card draw spells like phyrexian arena, bloodgift demon, graveborn muse, etc. i've actually grown disillusioned with these because they won't help you in a pickle and a lot of time they'll just get hit by an errant board wipe before doing anything.

there are also "pay mana/life to draw" spells like Erebos, God of the Dead and Greed

there are smaller draw spells like sign in blood and night's whisper. then there are bigger draw spells like Promise of Power, Ambition's Cost and Ancient Craving. these "instant" draw spells very nice for monoblack in my opinion.

I think draw spells that give you cards right away are generally the best for a monoblack deck, simply because of the way monoblack's mana works. sometimes you'll have only 5 mana at turn 5, other times you'll have 15 mana because of mana doublers. drawing into a phyrexian arena at 15 mana actually sucks because it'll take you at least another turn until you can use your mana. however, drawing into an ambition's cost is better since it gives you cards instantly. drawing into a Greed is even better because you can dump like 10 mana into drawing more cards if you need to.

so in my opinion, cards that draw slowly but over a long time aren't that great, but i have a very explosive style of building decks. i like to cast a billion spells and tap out entirely with my turns. however they do have superior value in a way though. phyrexian arena, if cast early in the game, will give you tons of value for basically almost nothing.

another point to think about is deck thinning. i think 15 smaller draw spells is better than 10 bigger draw spells. having 15 smaller card draw spells means you essentially have a smaller deck and a higher chance of drawing into draw spells.

if you don't want to worry about putting draw into your deck, you can just play erebos as your commander.

Scavenge always struck me as kinda bad, but you could do a thing with +1/+1 counters. Gyre Sage; Reyhan, last of the Abzan; Champion of Lambholt; Battlefront Krushok; Death's Presence; Crowned Ceratok; Armorcraft Judge. The outlast guys could be useful for giving buffed creatures trample or reach or whatever.

It occurs to me that Persist would be at a premium with this deck. Woodfall Primus and Puppeteer Clique could be kept on the battlefield and killed multiple times if you had creatures in the yard to exile and put +1/+1 counters on them: +1/+1 counters neutralize -1/-1 counters, so they'd be able to die and come back with Persist again each time you did this.

Shu Yun is a fun commander, my buddy built him for our "Budget" decks. (For when we get bored of our overtuned competitive decks)

RW both offer great combat tricks and buffs and blue offers tons of easy evasion.

I imagine if built properly it could be devastating. (As far as voltrons go)

I agree, I have too much single target removal. Maybe I'll swap some things around to see what I can do for a better removal package.

Now, with regards to wincon, there are quite a few actually. The engine works like this:

The idea is to throw out some of those little weenies and go for surprise wins with ridiculously huge things, or by going stupidly wide. Now, overwhelming stampede/triumph of the horde/pathbreaker ibex are all things that I want to run, I"m just not sure what to cut to make room for them.

Now, in terms of card draw, methinks you are mistaken. There are 10 things that will draw me cards or tutor up something if I need it, and that's not including the various mana ramp or fixing. Any more and my ratio will probably get fucked up. Armorcraft Judge, ambition`s cost, deathreap ritual, Yisan, Shamanic Revelation and Birthing Pod are hanging out in my binder, but again, I don`t know what to cut to fit those things in there.

This was one of those decks that had a bunch of interesting spicy tech, but wound up getting cut to try in the streamlining process. From testing, it`s really boom-or-bust. Either I have a solid opening hand instantly win by t4-t8, or I get blown out in hilarious fashion.

What is the best mana fixing creature in the game?

I'm looking for something that I can tutor up to even out my curve and throw a whole fuckload of lands onto the battlefield. I don't really care how strong it is, I just want to be able to hit it with worldly tutor.

Dunno if I want to continue down the path of Mizzix. The things I want to do with her just seem like Melek is better at the helm but then I lose out on the sick mana reduction of Mizzix because I really just want to copy spells all day.

Arjun seems pretty cool tho. I just have no idea how you are supposed to win with him since he looks to be built like a worse Niv Mizzet.

Wanted to build something to take advantage of the green stax type cards that usually don't see any play. Settled on Patron of the Orochi for massive mana and repeat activated abilities, along with Enchantresses to take advantage of the number of enchantments and token producers and Helix Pinacle to dump the mana into. I do want to find a slot for Cryptolith Rite, and feel like I'm not getting full advantage out of cards like Sasaya and Burgeoning with the land count being so low, and the low land count might be an issue in and of itself. I also want to find a slot for Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury but didn't have one when I was putting the deck together. Also yes I know all the tokens would make Craterhoof a great win con, and if I had one it'd be in there. Until then ulting Nature's Artisian will have to do.

So, any suggestions? Anybody else ever try to build mono green stax with any success?

That first one isn't even hard. Leaving up one or two mana for a swords to plowshares, a doom blade, or a vandalblast doesn't take much effort. As for the second one, most of the time it's pretty easy to rally everyone to kill a combo player.
