I am going to guess that Paths of the Righteous are not in the trove yet because I can't seem to find it. Somebody have the muse pages on hand to help out a silly anon? I have no anime girl pictures on this computer, so imagine one if needed as a reward.
>>
>>51038527

(You) have a good point.
>>
>Start at level 1 as an Arcanist
>Have only 14 AC

Should I be worried in case I get surprised before I put on Mage Armor?
>>
>>51038776
At level 1, anyone can die. Just make sure you're not in the firing line at the start.

For the surprise round, it's anyone's guess who will eat it. If you're up against melee enemies, make sure to put the meatshield between you and then. If you're up against ranged, go prone as a free action, to get +4 AC.

Other than that, it's called rusty dagger shanktown because a single hit can kill.

Try not to get hit.
>>
>>51038776
14 AC at level 1 as an arcanist without buffs is pretty good.

Overall you should be more worried about putting things inbetween you and the enemy rather than pumping your AC. Your AC is never going to be good.
>>
Rogue 1 wizard 3 arcane rogue for sneak attack spells (freezing touch, scorching ray etc). For specialist wizard, possibly conjuration, teleportation, what would be good schools to disfavor?
Enchantment is a definite, as a sneaker I wanna keep illusions and and for those attacks I need evocation. Divination is a must for all mages.

What would be a chaotic version of the Godclaw?

Well, if you are doing it like that, your only choices are pretty much Enchantment and Necromancy

Transmutation and Abjuration are too good to give up no matter what as they contain all the utility

>Pathfinder
Pretty comfy, if filled with rigorous study. Being a noble Half-Elf child (from two Half-Elf parents) in a minor Elf Kingdom, he was privileged to enjoy comfort and good-health in a well-kept Family villa near the capital.

He and his father spent a week together every fall visiting his father's fully-human half-siblings and his cousins in the small human town where he grew up. There, they would help with the harvest and enjoy the annual festival.

As he got older, his was educated in the various pursuits that are expected of a man-at-court. Etiquette, swordplay, magic, and various other things a young nobleman should know.
He was trained in these things by his venerable Great-Grandfather, former King of their nation, and head of the family. Having abdicated the throne to his eldest son, he retired to a comfy life amongst his half-human descendants, teaching the eldest of the youngest generation (my character) his most jealously guarded magical secrets, and the importance of helping people.

Well Godclaw is Iomedae, Irori, Abadar, Asmodeus, and Torag. Two LG, two LN, one LE. Let's see the flipside. Two CG, that should be Cayden and Desna, two CN, that's Gorum and Calistria, and one CE, which could either be Rovagug or Lamashtu, with the other in the same position as Zon-Kuthon for the real Godclaw, as in they have a heretic cult claiming that they're the sixth finger.

It's also about going with your gut, and in general wrecking shit. Upon reflection I'd say Rovagug is the better parallel to Asmodeus, so our final lineup is Calistria, Cayden Cailean, Desna, Gorum, and Rovagug. Actually opposes really well. Asmodeus and Rovagug are known sworn enemies, Calistria and Torag are representatives of different races with opposite philosophies, Iomedae and Cayden are both Starstone ascended deities, but with very different stories, Gorum and Irori are both incredible warriors, though one espouses passion and the other discipline, and Desna is the goddess of the open road, as opposed to Abadar being the god of cities.

Making a Power Attack/Cornugon Smash inquisitor, but I'd rather not gimp myself. Should I take Weapon Focus for a flat +1 to all hit rolls with my Greatsword, or should I just go for Furious Focus for no penalty on my first power attack?

Depends, how long do you think the game's going to go on for?
If it's a short term game, go for furious focus. Make sure at least one hit goes through. Longer term, I'd consider weapon focus (if it upgrades), or consider retraining.

He doesn't wield a sword in the traditional sense, and has hedonist drawback, but pretty much.
>>
>>51039228
We're currently level two, and the DM plans to take it to around level thirteen to fourteen. Can you explain your reasoning for furious focus over weapon focus early/weapon focus late so that I understand?
>>
>>51039155
From level 1-5 Furious Focus is +1 to your only attack, as is Weapon Focus.
From level 6-7 Furious Focus is +2 to your only attack, while Weapon Focus is +1.
From level 8-10 Furious Focus is +2 to your first attack, while Weapon Focus is +1 to your first and second attacks.
From level 11-14 Furious Focus is +3 to your first attack, while Weapon Focus is +1 to your first and second attacks.
At level 15 Furious Focus is +3 to your first attack, while Weapon Focus is +1 to your first, second, and third attacks.
From level 16-20 Furious Focus is +4 to your first attack, while Weapon Focus is +1 to your first, second, and third attacks.

Would it be a good idea for a Gulch Gunner to dip into Swashbuckler for Dodging Panache? Maybe go Mysterious Stranger so CHA matters and Picaroon for at least 3 to get Quick Clear back?
>>
>>51039263
Oh, and forgot the potential implications.
1-5 they're exactly equal.
6-7 Furious Focus is always better.
8-10 Weapon Focus catches up, and potentially surpasses Furious Focus.
11-14 is Furious Focus's chance to catch up.
15 Weapon Focus catches up again.
16-20 both are at their peak.
As you can see, from 1-7 Furious Focus is the better choice. After that it becomes more complicated.
>>
There is something I am questioning here. Is there any reason why Orc bloodline's damage bonus for blasting gets to be unconditional compared to Draconic or Elemental anyway?
>>
>>>51039263
>>51039263
Thanks for your help!
>>
>>51039453
What are the feat tax rules? Does either furious focus or weapon focus net you any more stuff afterwards for free?

That'd also be important in the calcs.
>>
>>51039263
>>51039453
Don't forget, that power attacking will make hitting with iteratives really really hard. Weapon focus will barely mitigate that on its own.

Furious focus will allow you to hit high AC much more reliably, even at higher levels. Weapon focus will not help much.
>>
>>51039440
Light Sensitivity until level 9, Touch of Rage and Strength of the Beast suck. Claws aren't great either, but they don't take a standard action to use.
>>
>>51038927

A lot of people seem to have that revelation at one point or another.
>>
>>51039472
I'll quote here from the site our group found Feat Tax on.

'Martial Mastery is:

Gone. Combat feats like Weapon Focus now apply to weapon groups instead of a specific weapon by default.

Pathfinder frequently forces a player to invest heavily in a single weapon. For instance, two-weapon fighting rogues are stuck with mirrored weapons so their Weapon Finesse and Weapon Focus benefits apply to both their attacks. Expanding these feats to cover the weapon groups mentioned under the fighter’s Weapon Training would make things much more flexible. We might finally see a samurai wielding a daisho.'
-----
So, Weapon Focus won't just apply to my greatsword, it'll apply to other weapons, too. No other rules mention it.
>>
>>51039606
You think that if Weapon Focus is treated that way, something like Slashing Grace would still restrict you to a single weapon?

I took it over Deadly Agility 'cause I'm playing a panache-focused character, and I'm wondering if I'll need to retrain if/when I want to use a different weapon.
>>
>>51039661
I would think so, flavour-wise. If in doubt, I'd say ask your DM.
>>
>>51039606
Well in that case it comes down to if you want to have more consistent damage and intimidate rolls or potentially more damage and more chances at the intimidate assuming you have ways to over come the 3/4 BAB progression through inquisitorial means.
>>
>>51039606
In that case, there's no real benefit if you're not using multiple weapon types.

If you're going up against lots of high AC targets, Furious Focus will allow you to hit with the first but not the iteratives.

If you're going up against lower AC targets, weapon focus will help you hit more often.

Heist GM here. Yes, it'd be a technique used in investigations, but it has some major drawbacks, in that you need one of the party members to cast the spell, a certain level spellcaster to use it greater detect magic, it has a limited area that it can search, the investigator needs to beat a Knowledge (Arcana) check to identify it, then that same series of events has to happen in another crime scene, with the same investigator, with a necessary Spellcraft to link the two. It's not like fingerprinting, where you can take a print, and then any officer can look it up. Yes, it will be something to take into account, but greater detect magic would be more likely to be used to track down, for example, serial magical arsonists.

Naw, the one with a horse. Horses make everything better.

On the note of that one, though, I find it funny how many Kaijitsu there are compared to other backgrounds. Did anyone get a count of how many orphan children there are compared to long-lost younger siblings, survival enthusiasts, or shy wannabe lovers?
>>
>>51040681
Most of these aren't really drawbacks. It's just "you need to have the right man in the right place" which is necessary for resolving most problems. Knowledges and Spellcraft can also be optimized pretty easily, PF is infamous for how cheesy its skill system is.

Also, Greater Detect Magic is very much like taking fingerprints. First you analyze the signature and then you can compare it to everything you find later, including spells people you meet have on themselves. You do not have database to fall back on (unless it's a high-magic setting where you do) but that's still very useful. Unless GDM allows you to take signatures only for one spell at a time so if you analyze someone's Summon Monster you won't be able to recognize him later for his Mage Armor. Still, canny investigator would devise some kind of situation where casting that one spell would be necessary and then put the suspect in it.
>>
>>51040776
The trap with the horse is a human, not an aasimar.
>>
>>51040662
Excellent! Can't wait to see the update.
>>
>>51040727
Investigator/Vigilante is great
>>
>>51040798
"You need to have the right man in the right place," is a drawback, and a database is what makes forensic science work. A database means that any investigator can compare evidence from any crime scene to that from another crime scene. Since Greater Detect Magic doesn't allow for sharing information between two spellcasters you need every investigator to analyze every crime scene individually, an effort that would be so taxing that it would only be possible to handle a handful of crimes for a short period of time, after which they would have to be dropped. The solution is to have one investigator assigned to every crime with a similar MO, but that leaves the significant weakness that if the PCs are clever they can switch up how they pull off a crime, making it significantly harder for them to be tracked.

Again, I'm not saying it's not something that they should consider, I'm saying that it's not something that's unavoidable, or even consistently a major threat to their operation.
>>
>>51040814

>>
>>51040867
It does seem that it'd be an issue with the style of singular Detective leaders who dog the players, in the style of Zenigata or literally any heist movie. Lots of shows would have a 'head investigator' who was clever, overworked, and the thrust of the show/story would be keeping a step ahead of them. Hell, the french Lupin novels had Holmlock, too, so it's officially a classic.

That being said you're totally right, and Greater Detect Magic or not it won't really affect whether or not said recurring NPC is in the right place at the right time.
>>
>>51040923
Terrible.

>>51040986
>>51040867

>>
>>51041026
Been wondering something about the dune drifter--it says that you can wear something that counts as your banner.

Does this imply that you can only have a banner that's a big flag on a stick? Because that makes Daring Champion a whole lot worse if I can't just have a flashy tabard or long, prominent cape.
>>
>>51040923
>dune drifter
>gets a gun
>can't use it with the standard melee challenge
>can't replace challenge with luring cavalier ranged challenge
Terrible. You lose out on a mount, and lose out on challenge, and those are half the things you need to begin with to be even halfway viable.

If you must take a gunnery cavalier, take musketeer/luring cavalier.
>>
>>51040867
Greater Detect Magic requires 3rd level Wizard or Cleric or 4th level inquisitor. It's not exactly much and every bigger city should have few ot those in most high-magic settings. If you are investigating a crime where magic was involved then getting magical signatures should be a priority because it is so useful. Especially if MO is similar.

I am not saying that GDM is some kind of universal key to resolve any and all kind of investigations, just that high-magic setting should really take it into consideration. There are reasons for why it cannot be used sometimes (optimal conditions are rarely assured) but I would say it is pretty major, as well as some divinations or conjuring ghosts to interrogate/as observers or resurrecting higher-profile victims or whatever.
>>
>>51041058
>At 5th level, a dune drifter can choose to use his hat as his banner. If the drifter does not wear a hat, another iconic accessory—such as an eye-mask, bandana, or distinguishing coat—can instead serve as his banner.

>In all other ways, this ability functions as and replaces the banner cavalier ability.
You can wear a hat which counts as a banner.
>>
>>51041081
To clarify--does that mean that *as any other type of Cavalier* you can only use a banner that's a big hand-held flag?
>>
>>51041061
You don't actually lose your horse as a Dune Drifter--you just don't get anything that makes your horse work better like a normal Cavalier's cavalier's charge.
>>
>>51041026
How so? I mean maybe on it's own, sure, but what about with a dip in Mysterious Stranger? You'd get more Grit, and you wouldn't lose out on Quick Clear thanks to Amateur Gunslinger unless you switch it for Extra Grit.

>>51041061
> You lose out on a mount
But you don't, that's just Luring Cavalier. Losing out on the challenge is valid though, but I think there was some kind of eratta for it (though that might've been PFS and thus not *really* official).

That really depends on what variety of shield user you want to be. Bashing is an option, but it requires Dex for TWF, though you could grab something like Upsetting Shield Style to turn bashing into more attacks on AoO. why is this allowed
>>

Because 90% of players are too myopic to realize that they should take an ART instead of using their human bonus feat for EWP or Skill Focus.

>>

Because there are better uses for the bonus feat than any of those. Getting the jump on a feat chain you need to take is far better than 3x Skill Focus.
>>
>>51042126
>>51042173
Most builds that need an exotic weapon or skill focus really only ever need ONE exotic weapon or skill focus, so a half-elf would probably be a straight upgrade, but it's still jarring. For some niche PoW builds, three skill focuses would actually be a pretty sweet deal. Especially if you're shooting to get Orator.

>>51042130
>Focused Study for a skill focus feat at 1st, 8th, and 16th level

Hey /pfg/

I'm playing Pathfinder in my first campaign (second character) and I'd really like to play a Shaman.

I've been told Healing/Debuffing is a good way to go with them but, how do I do that effectively?

Starting at lvl 3 btw
>>
>>51042215
Shadowhunter is, if you ever are going to take Iron Will a straight upgrade to just Iron Will.

Humans overall are one of the strongest races period. Other races can be stronger in their specialization, using alternate race traits, but they have a hard time comparing to humans.
>>
>>51042173
But if you're planning on taking Skill Focus for any reason in your build, you might as well take it at level 1 and also get two free feats out of it.
>>
>>51042302
>>51042298
This as well. If your build includes Eldritch Heritage (which almost every build can make use of Eldritch Heritage) then it's two free feats.

Or for Skill Focus (Stealth), which comes up in many builds for Damped Presence.

Skill Focus (Linguistics) is also a common one, and comes up in 3 feats I believe as prerequisites.
>>
Ever set up players again an obviously superior foe, give the players every chance to turn back/escape, demonstrate the foe's superiority and willingness to let them go, and have players continue to bash their heads against the problem until they die?

This is now the second time this has happened, with the same fucking encounter. Two groups have ended up having at least half the party die to the guy.
>>
>>51042415

In my experience, if you want your players to realize "this thing is bad news, and it will kill you", you need to make it very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very clear from the outset.
>>
>>51042415
Have you tried hanging a picture of a skull over the foe's head?
>>
>>51042475
Things were clear, I have no idea how I could make it clearer to them. At the point the guy is killing enemies several CR above the party in passing, is feared by half the continent, and the land where he steps begins to wilt and die. Also the fact being near him forces will saves against sickened due to the fact simply being near him fucks with your mind/body.
>>
>>51042415
GMs who do that usually make it obvious. Like one GM who allowed us to basically automatically stabilize would occasionally say "You won't gain that benefit for this encounter" as a warning that this wasn't something we could fuck around with (dragons and a certain pit fiend were a good example of that).

Oddly enough, the most obvious time that it happened--during babby's first campaign back in high school--the GM kept talking shit about "this is specifically designed to kill all of you" and...well, we ended up just taking it apart. Working theory is he got cold feet at the last second realizing that his story would end if he killed us all.
>>
After doing some shit, I can say that Lazy Princess will have an actual game posted this weekend with chargen rules and then be open for applications.

Very often what a GM believes to be clear clues are either murky, or worse yet may suggest the opposite.

This is in addition to all the times where "you're pretty sure you'd all die" turned out to be a cakewalk.

And isn't even counting the chances of someone attempting to bluff their power-level such as by, say, ROLLING INTIMIDATE.

Furthermore, there's the big problem of d20 progression: If it would TPK you, you PROBABLY ALSO CAN'T HIDE FROM IT OR RUN FROM IT EITHER. Senses (perception but also vision modes, etc) go up with CR/Level/Etc, and movement speeds and modes often do as well. If it can outfight all five of you put together, it probably also A) knows you're there, and B) has the mobility and initiative advantage over at least most of the party.

If most of the party runs away, whoever's left is likely utterly fucked. If it's that overwhelming, they've doomed themselves to wasting their actions while their predator fucking pounces them or something. Turn 1 was lost, and probably so was the biggest threat to the enemy.

By standing their ground, they retain their action economy advantage, and have a chance of criticals and the like getting through its defenses to dissuade or even murder it.

It's the difference between deciding, say, 80% chance of death with 20% chance of escape at high cost and no gains, versus 10% chance of win, 20% chance of win at the same high cost as escaping would have but with gains (levels/loot), and 70% chance of death.

>we'll go with the one where we're less likely to fucking die
the next day
>despite all the warnings I kept giving them, the party all died.

Also, final warning if you don't want them to hunt you the fuck down: Do NOT rocks-fall this shit. If a character is overwhelmingly more powerful than they, you better follow the fucking rules. Do NOT handwave and "cinematics" shit to "punish" them. That is to say: don't cheat.

What happened was:
>level 15 enemy Dread Ghoul Tyrant Antipaladin
>level 5 party
The anti-paladin wanted to let people go to spread word of terror, disease, etc.

What the players knew of him that he was a madman and a warlord that has burned his way through several large cities on his way to where the party was. The party was told to get out of there and head to the capital to seek help. The party decided to stay instead. I thought that was fine.

When the siege set in the baron offered to set the party with a team of his best to make a break for the capital. The party refused.

When the keep was overrun and the party defeated the antipaladin made them watch him string up the baron. Called them outsiders to the conflict, and good messangers. He let them go and told them to spread word of his coming. The first fucking thing a party member tried to do was stab the anti-paladin.

This was after several demonstrations of his power and being accompanied by a massive fiendish dire bear. Some of the ways were killing the Baron's best (who the party knew were stronger than them), wading into the keep singlehandedly, and a bunch of other bullshit.

Oh and also killing most of the city's population by just being near them because the guy was literally full of plague.

>>
>>51043332
I think a decent way to resolve that without him killing them would be for him to just take the stab.

They throw their best attacks at him, he takes them (just don't mark down the hp if they would actually kill him), and mocks their attempts--maybe a good old "you've got spirit" sort of backhanded praise at best--before he just turns his back on them and pimps out.

That's how you can establish "this guy is beyond you" without ending your game.

Question time /pfg/

What kind of feats/items are needed to pump a single spell up to obscene levels? First party only.

I've got a level 5 Half-Elf Arcanist to work with and currently focused on Fireball.

Feat / trait list so far
Magical Lineage: Fireball
Elven Reflexes
Improved Initiative
Spell Focus: Evocation
Spell Specialization: Fireball

Can't afford metamagic yet, though burning arcane reservoir points this gives me a 9d6 fireball DC19 at level 5.

This isn't how Greater Detect Magic works.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/d/detect-magic

This spell functions as detect magic, except that you can glean much more information from the magical auras that you find, and those auras can be found after a much greater length of time. You can detect a lingering aura for up to 1 day per caster level you have, regardless of the aura's original strength.

Additionally, when you use a standard action to concentrate on this spell, you can also study a creature within the spell's area and attempt a Spellcraft check in order to determine the last spell that the creature cast by identifying lingering traces that the spell left in the caster's aura. The DC to identify the spell is equal to 20 + the creature's caster level.

Finally, you are able to locate and analyze the signature flourishes in a magical aura that allow you to match a spell to the person who cast it. In order to find these identifiers in a spell's aura, you must spend 1 round focusing on that spell in particular, and succeed at an opposed Knowledge (arcana) check against the caster (or a Knowledge [arcana] check with a DC equal to 15 + the spell level if the caster wants her work to be identified and emphasizes these unique elements rather than obscuring them). Once you learn a caster's set of identifiers, you can remember them as easily as a face or a voice. You can recognize this signature if you succeed at a Spellcraft check when later identifying a spell to determine whether or not that spell was cast by the same individual. The spell greater magic aura can obfuscate this information, making it seem that someone else cast the spell. Greater detect magic grants a saving throw against magic aura (but not greater magic aura).

I don't think that's his problem. I think the problem is that's ONE PERSON in the city who has that information.

He can't describe what the spell 'feels' like to someone else, he can describe the modifiers or some of the details but they don't get the Spellcraft check to recognize the person's spell aura, only the person who cast the spell.

So if there's a second crime scene, that same spellcaster has to come to the same next crime scene and cast at least detect magic, probably the Greater version again assuming they're long gone, in order to recognize that the signature is the same. Then those two crimes can be connected.

But what happens if there's a lot of crimes and the police forces are as well-worked as, say, our police forces, which are characteristically larger and better-funded than the anachronisms that'd be in play there? That is a LOT of assumptions, that the same magical police officer is going to go to the same crimescenes and then is going to catch the one suspect and see him casting a spell in order to catch this person. It's impossible to make a national DB, and in court, it's going to rely on this police officer's character that he's correctly identified this magical signature in front of a bunch of people who don't cast magic and don't know what that is.

There's a lot of ifs, so the idea is that Greater Detect Magic isn't the be-all end-all crime fighting weapon that'll wind up making Heists impossible in a fantasy setting - That's all that's being said here.

Okay, I'm looking around but not really seeing something on the subject. Would there be any problem making a golem/construct out of say a sheet of paper?

My idea being, cast a Fire Rune on a sheet of paper, turn it into something that can move. Make 20 of these, have them swarm a monster, then try and dispel the runes for fun.

Maybe there's a easier way to blow shit up, but I kind of want to focus on golems/constructs. And explosions.

Let's consider the size of the police force. Modern day civil law enforcement agencies in large cities have around 50 employees per 10,000 people. In Sharn, a city of around 200,000, this means 1,000 employees. If we're generous, 1,500. I'm not sure how the distribution plays out, but I'm guessing this doesn't actually leave us with too many 3rd level wizards and witches.

>>51045100
And how many times can they cast them per day? Remember, each identified spell is a casting of Share Memory in order to give it to our 'database,' which would make sense as a dedicated caster. Is there going to be one person whose job is entirely to cast Share Memory and absorb the spell data from every Greater Detect Magic user? What happens if they're killed? Now all of that spell information is spread out again.

If you're really paranoid, shell out the 20 or 30 gold for an armored kilt or silken ceremonial armor so you don't look like a spellcaster at first glance and wont get hit with the "geek the mage first" tactic.
