There's actually quite a nice collection now.
The Gambler is probably one of the most open-ended of them, as it's effectively a 6th-level manifester with a theme on blasting and "random" chance.
The Onslaught Sniper from the new playtest is also great, as its whole schtick is "I shoot things dead with elemental shooting, other kineticists have utility but I shootshoot SHOOT THINGS DEAD".

Dueling swords are identical to longswords, which are the best swords available to you for one-handing.

If you've got Scarlet Throne Style and one level in Landsknecht, you can treat the Aldori Dueling Sword as two-handed for strength bonuses, power attack, and class abilities.

In other words, it's not only a really cool looking sword, it's the best sword available to you if you want to be a one-handed dueling badass.

I think the Project M method of balancing would work well. Set Wizard as the goal, nerf some of the EXTREME bullshit (removing invincibility from the first frame of shine, for example), then giving the rest more tools and options to better compete. Fox is still the best, but the rest of the cast becomes viable. I think it's doable. I hope someone nuts up.

Well, Starfinder is definitely sci-fi, but it's going to be a while before it comes out. The Iron Gods AP uses tech rules pretty heavily, though. You might check it out, look for stuff to recycle.

All the rules and exceptions to the rules are scattered and rarely (read: never) repeated. I really feel as though Paizo doesn't know how to construct rulebooks for reference. It's built to read like a novel, cover to cover, not reference in play. There should be an extensive appendix with class progression tables reiterated, the gross player value per level should be more than just tucked away in chapter 12 under how to adjust NPC CR (wtf), preparing spells and managing spellbooks should be in the Wizard's class description as well as in chapter 9 on magic, etc, etc. These fuckers don't know how to write good reference materials.

Well, /pfg/, I DM'ed my second ever game, although the first one went horribly so I'm not sure I should count it, but this one actually went well!

My players got to show off their strengths and I got to give them a relatively decent hook to go off on an adventure, and at no point did anyone seem like they were getting bored or wanted to quit. Plus I got a good sense of the personalities of most of the characters, which is always good.

Thanks, and I'll be honest I have partial thanks to give to you guys for helping me get to this point. Why are people so hard on d20 resolution? I'd agree the most famous d20 games have a lot of issues, and the open source nature of 3e lead to some SHIT system conversions (d20 modern, etc), but I feel as though the die itself is a really good core mechanic. d6's are bad because it's too small unless you do something fancy with pools, and d100's are just annoying to me since working with single percents its very rarely necessary. d20 is just d100 with 5 percent increments and is a really good range packaged in the throw of one die. I feel like it catches too much shit.

2d6 is obfuscating, though. Like, "roll a 7+" vs "roll a 4+" are such massively different results, and in a way that's not readily apparent to the player. And a +1 bonus when you need a 7 or higher is a MUCH bigger increase than a +1 when you need a 4. When you can accomplish the same thing on a d20 with a 3+ being about the same odds as a 4+ on 2d6 (90% vs 91%) and a 9+ being about equal to a 7 or higher (60% vs 58%).

I dunno why people jerk off over bell curves so much; consistently hitting one number over the others doesn't make the game overall more consistent, it just makes modifiers confusing and very context sensitive.

PCs meet at a festival, its a holiday, and the ground collapses because plot. The group finds no way out except for one route through the caves. For the moment, they are still underground. The story has the PCs and 3 NPCs go around for a while, all stuck underground until they can get to the surface.

The NPCs eventually come back in later books and help the PCs in various, along with giving bonus XP for keeping them friendly/not letting their attitude degrade.

My only real issue with 2hu is that the fey obedience he took is not balanced to any degree around any other obedience (for instance Irori's which gives +4 to knowledge skills, which is already considered extremely strong). +4 untyped to all Int based skills is a tad too strong.

Also blood money abuse is not something that should be allowed in games, but in this case it is up to the GM.

Besides that I don't actually have a problem with wizards. I like wizards and have played them in the past.

I do have an issue with him sacrificing any ability to do something in combat, to the point of not taking combat spells. This essentially means he will be a non-contributor in combat. In a game that has out of combat be this important saying "I'm going to make it so my character can't do combat" and forcing others to pick up the slack is an active detriment to them for their ability to act outside of combat, the focus of the game.

In that case my advice is to just keep doing what you're doing. Even if they don't know it right now the challenge your characters are facing right now is not one of high damage rolls but one of patience.

Presumably there's one NPC there that's the normie of the group, he's the DC 10 of the group, easy to swallow and easy to overcome. The guy with the busted leg is like a DC 15, he will indeed slow the party down but it's not necessarily his fault so the players (unless they're total dicks) might think about leaving him behind but probably won't.

The last guy is basically a DC 20, they have to try really hard to keep themselves in check so as to not do something they might regret or do something that will negatively affect them later down the road. Sure he's a total tool but that doesn't deserve death, and if you feel like he's REALLY getting out of hand feel free to let the PCs scare him into submission through sheer numbers if nothing else.

Well its a few days after christmas, most everyone has gotten over their hangovers.

The issue I'm having is it's hard to strike a balance between combat and skills without either cheese or being a full caster.

Two are both DC 13, the one with the leg can get a DC heal check to make a splint which IIRC automatically makes them neutral or friendly.

The main problem comes just from running three different NPCs with vastly different roles and current allies. The PCs are handling the situation wonderfully, but I'm just having trouble running combat and side talk with three NPCs.

I think it's just my perceptions are warped for how high bonuses should be. I honestly can't even fucking tell anymore what's normal for a level.

Is it level +10 is what you shoot for with your best skill? Level +15? Level +20? Some other formula?

Depends entirely on how much you need to bank on that skill. Level +8 or +10 is a good one to try and go for if you're focused on that attribute and that skill at the same time.

This is kinda why I like the Avowed, since it gives "+6 to three related skills for 24 hours".

Level+7 is a benchmark for your average 'good' skill. Max ranks, 18 in relevant stat, no other investment.
Item investments of between +1 and +5 on top of that are pretty normal by the early midgame.
Anything beyond that means you're putting in special effort to boost it and it's up to you, and also depending on the skill in question, to decide when it's gone too far.

Well if they're having fun it sounds to me like you're already doing your job quite well, and that you're just psyching yourself out from the, admittedly, strenuous job of being a DM. Try to take it easy or even just take a break if it gets too stressful, and just keep in mind that this is a game that's supposed to be fun for everyone!

Plus, from what you're describing it sounds like it won't be long until you're out of this particular situation and those NPCs will be out of your hair. If it helps just look at that as the light at the end of the tunnel and tough it out until you get there.

Now I am really debating.

My first level feat is caught between two things:
Deific Obedience (Iomedae)
and
Two Weapon Fighting

As is my melee is barely serviceable, with two weapon fighting it fixes it somewhat. However the Deific Obedience fits the character and the bonus to diplomacy/knowledge nobility is enticing.

On the melee front things get a lot better at level 4 once studied combat comes online, as well I begin moving into spells such as Alter Self for dex bonuses.

It's sad that sword cane is so bad.

I'd joke about everyone making new threads with each iteration being worse but I think that would get us in trouble with the janitors.

I am a Cleric 7/ Wizard 3/ Mystic Theurge 1.

I want to build the ultimate magic item crafter. So far I have craft wondrous and spellcraft skill focus, and some arcane armor wearing feats.

I can only use the core book and advanced X books (race/class/player.)

I already have something of an idea of what I can do to move forward. I'm going to make a Ring of Craft Magic after picking up forge ring at this level. I'd really like to know how to reduce crafting tie/cost if possible.

Kineticist here again. I noticed that the class lets you learn Wild Talents through attunement and there's an example for each element.
So GM is asking: since wizards have to burn cash to learn spells, how much a Kineticist's wild talents are worth in gold? He would count them as treasure for me to acquire. Is there a table or guide for something like this?
