Pathfinder General /pfg/

Be excellent, kind, and caring to everyone! We've got a Molthuni knights game up here with lots of applicants:
https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/4399356/character-applications
DON'T talk about which ones you love or hate. Instead, offer advice to specific applicants on how to improve their backstories.
Whether it's Arehera's fluffy tail kitsune tactician in high heels or 2hu's immortal shapeshifting shota trap wizard, give players feedback!

Let's give advice to the big name folks.

Alister, Diana, Di, and Kurat.

What about their applications do you hate? What do you like? What criteria do you generally rate it on?
>>
Oh my god is this going to happen every time someone posts a game that's never going to get run?
>>
>>50890207
Once the big name ones choose players or get canceled people will become jaded enough not to care.

Though honestly we ARE talking about the setting. It's better when it isn't a lewd game so we don't talk about fetishes as much.

Alright, so we have games in Cheliax, Varisia-into-TianXia, Molthune, and previously /pfg/ memed about a Land of the Linnorm Kings game ages back.

What are some other locales in the Golarion/MainPF setting you would love to go on adventures in?

Because I have nothing to do right now, and a copy of the ISWG in front of me, so if anyone wants info for potential campagins in different regions, I may be able to look stuff up and give info on potential campaign stuff.

As for me personally, I wouldn't terribly mind if I were to someday be in a Thornkeep game

Well, at first glance this is the least heavy-handed lesbians-made-kids I've ever read related to pathfinder. It's not even detailed.

The story doesn't seem too nasty - there's far less comfy up there - and is somewhat more reasonable given it's existing nobles trying to get themselves acknowledged.

The character has 24 skill points, which is odd given 10 int and 4+INT with background (background is 2/lv isn't it?). There's one or two other character sheets in the list with abnormal skill numbers. Otherwise it seems mechanically sound; a sphere skald is relatively straightforward and not too weak or too powerful.

Seem normal enough.
>>
>>50890646
Taldor and Brevoy would be the next ones. Kingmaker doesn't count as Brevoy because it's barely in there.
>>
>>50890462

Well, there's one common thread people keep bringing up about the backstory. Most of it is so dark and uncomfy. It sure gets comfy at the end but a lot of people think the rest of it is too heavy.

Maybe some good advice would be to lighten the rest of it up, no need to go that hard on the horrors of war aspect.

Also, maybe he should minmax so fucking much, that might help too.

>>
>>50890672
>Nothing really happens in those 50 years, she's commander of the irregulars, but there are no characters or connections there, just the name,

Adding to this as an observer, but people really don't appreciate just how much can happen in a single year, let alone 10 or in this case 50.

Throwing numbers at the screen may seem like a good way to make your character seem old, but most people don't do a lot to emphasize just how packed those years are.
>>
>>50890656
So I can't really see a reason she was given a village. She "finished with distinction", she needs a bit more than that. Especially as a former Nirmathan.
>>
>>50890646
>Because I have nothing to do right now, and a copy of the ISWG in front of me, so if anyone wants info for potential campagins in different regions, I may be able to look stuff up and give info on potential campaign stuff.

http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1047144

Bio Copypaste:
http://pastebin.com/hyDvzr8g

It's kinda short. Noble boy grows up, becomes a squire then knight, doesn't participate in the war. No big heroics that would justify earning any kind of land and title so his family having a village doesn't make any sense. He doesn't mechanically get any powers from the land, so that part doesn't make sense either. Way, way too young to be level 3 and no waifu potential.

sorry, the "not even detailed" was in reference to the "how that was done" beyond "transmutation, done".

Since Kurat's children are around the same age as most of the PCs would it be reasonable to marry them to join the families? His eldest and heir is unmarried.
>>
>>50890857

Maybe you should give her an excuse to leave the military? What's stopping Di from falling for a man and deciding to spend a decade or two as a wife, working logistics and as a boot camp instructor while raising the kids!

10-15 years in active service, 20 years as a mom/drill instructor, and then the Molthune government comes to her door and gives her the whole, "you've done us a great service" speech that ends with an offer of knighthood.

That's been a suggested strategy since Kitsune Matriarch, anon.

If you give your character a lot of children than you could easily custom-tailor some as marriage bait.

So let's say I want to start off my campaign with a festival full of things for my Level 2 characters to test their skills at in a competitive sense, what would you all suggest as fun, productive feeling activities that they can participate in that will also show off what they can do to the townsfolk?

I'm only aware as of yet about what a couple of the characters are going to be, so I'd like as many ideas as possible to cover my bases.

And she refuses, but chases him down when she sees a picture of herself with the Irregulars, reminding her of her duty to her country.

It's cliche as fuck, but probably better than what I've got right now. Doesn't quite feel comfy though, I'm gonna think.

Same scenario, but instead of the Molthune officer giving her one last mission (to be a knight in a far-off land) it turns out her secluded log cabin is right next to the village she was being requisitioned.

The officer in this case is riding to her house to tell her, "hey, see those lights down there? You own them now. Get to work."

I think the shift makes for a sweet end to a tragic story. But this is a backstory, a beginning, not the character's whole story.

Well, more constructive would be appreciated since I'd rather it not suck, but I at least have to defend myself on two aspects:

1) land can be inherited, and nobility does that kind of thing a little better than gaining a farmstead.

2) Nation-pact Avowed literally has their pact abilities given to them by their country itself, and not in a political manner either.

This Molthune GM wants to take a country with a MILITARY OLIGARCHY locked in a bloody, grueling war with a land of ruthless guerilla bandits.

And then use that for a "comfy" game and demand that all characters be comfy.

What's the fucking point? Why not set the game somewhere peaceful?

Note all this is from only the ISWG, so I could be missing stuff.

>Major religions,
Abadar, Gorum, and Pharasma primarily, with the last one most beloved and worshipped by the commonfolk and whose clerics most serve as midwives, healers, and morticians. There are also many people who still preserve the “Old Ways” of nature worship, and many people in Issia make sacrifices and worship weird and bizarre things, some even worshipping something within the Lake of Mists and Viels that claims to be the True Master of Brevoy.

>Rough History
Brevoy is a cold, harsh, and unforgiving land, just likes its people. The soil is almost always frozen, fishing can only be done is the incredibly short spring and summer, and nearly every noble is a greedy prick who spends his time holed up in his stronghold, eyeing his neighbor’s lands. Brevoy is divided into two halfs, Issia to the north, and Rostland to the south. Issians are insular and enigmatic, and usually practive weird rituals and traditions, while Rostlanders are outgoing and welcoming, but super obsessed with “Muh Honor” and “Muh Standing”, and will take offence to the most minor slight against them, often resulting in the offender either being carted to the magistrate, or forced into a duel for their honor on the spot. They are honestly kinda crazy and hotheaded, but super loyal if you can earn said loyalty.
For Thousands of years House Surtova ruled Issia, a house of cunning pirates and scoundrels who raided across the Lake of Mists and Veils, and most of Issia was ruled through cunning and the fact that they tend to rely on the Lake and Piracy to survive. This place is cold, brutal, and the natives here don’t play nice with others.

well, that's the way paizo puts it, complete with "and the chaotic good people who now live in a small anarchy that will ultimately be unsustainable good thing time never moves along in this" spunky CG rebels fighting against The Man.

But if you look closely at the country, it has far better human rights (including for slaves; and slavery IS an important economic factor that has not disappeared today; we're just unlucky enough that the owners realized that owning us meant they had to be responsible and keep us from starving or they'd look bad to their other richass friends) and conditions than many other countries, and is actively offering very good incentives as it attempts to grow INTO the territory it's carved out.

Any kingdom generally begins with a military campaign. There are many chances to make it good; it's just that right now some of it is described as utterly dispicable because that is literally the devs view of lawful.

>2/7?

Rostland meanwhile was settled and colonized by Taldan Explorers under the leadership of Baron Sirian First, who was an impulsive dick who fled to Brevoy after losing too many duels in Taldor. The small colony was quickly assaulted and taken over by a Bandit Lord from the River Kingdoms who was a master swordsman, who challenged Sirian to a Duel, with the wager of the Bandit’s Head vs half the Baron’s fortune. Baron whupped and humiliated, paid the ransom, and fled to another land, leaving the Bandit Lord to take the place over. Fast forward several years and Sirian returns back, calling himself Sirian Aldori, a as a complete BAMF, challenges the bandit lord to a rematch, and defeats him almost instantly. After reestablishing his rule, Baron Aldori issued a challenge to anyone willing to face it for a reward of 100K gold: they had to beat him 1v1 in a sword fight.

Thousands of men answered the call of challenge, and not a single one could beat him, and so Baron Aldori was proclaimed as the greatest swordsman in the world. Eventually, Aldori passed his techniques on to a small group of pupils, made them swear to an oath of secrecy and to take the name Aldori, and vow never to pass on the techniques to anyone not of the Sword-Pact. Thus the Aldori Swordlords were born.

Then, in 4499 AR, a badass Warlord from Iobaria named Choral Rogarvia, or Choral the Conquerer pimped right into the region with a huge army of Iobarians and an allegiance of a slew of Red Dragons and took the whole area over. House Surtova surrendered essentially immediately, and Issia was spared destruction, as the Surtovans decided to instead gain political power and worm their way into favor with Choral.
>>
>>50892434
>3/7?

Rostland, on the otherhand refused to bow to the barbarian horde and the Swordlords, and attempted to fight against them. Their lands were heavily ravaged for their troubles, and the Swordlords were nuked with Dragon Fire until they surrendered. Choral then united and welded the formally separated and vastly different nations of Issia and Rostland into the single nation of Brevoy, established the Seven Great Noble Houses to serve under him and oversee the nation. House Rogarvia ruled over the United Brevoy, and Choral himself eventually disappeared somewhere deep within Gronzi Forrest, claiming to return one day when his people needed him most. i.e Choral is essentially Jaghati Khan.
Then one day, in the year 4699 AR, every single member of House Rogarvia spontaneously disappeared out of thin air. No trace, fortresses empty and undisturbed, they were just all gone. After this, due to their constant political maneuvering and advancing since pledging allegiance to Choral, House Surtova, led by King-Regent Noleski Surtova swiftly came to power as the rulers of Brevoy and holder of the Dragonscale Throne in the Ruby Fortress in New Stetven. However, it still remains to be seen if they can hold the throne, as even now Rostalnd chaffes under the Issian’s rule, and the many other noble houses now maneuver to gain land and power and to seize the Dragonscale Throne for themselves.

> Major Cities and locales
Gronzi Forest is a creepy dark forrect that supplies lumber to New Stetven. It extends into the foothills of the Icerime Peaks, though hunting and woodcutting is largely unregulated in the wester reaches. Choral disappeared her for some reason, probably to become a witcher.

The Icerime Peaks are the Alps essentially, cold mountains covered in ancient as fuq ruins form the Iobarians and other lost civilizations, also abandoned mines and dungeons haunted by iceshades.

New Stetven is the capital, established by Choral, and is the main trade hub of goods flowing between Rostland and Issia. Food shipped from New Stetven supplies and feeds people in the River Kingdoms, Numeria and Mendev, since those places are often too tumultuous and dangerous to grow their own food, and as such you can often find goods from those places (like Numerian Skymetal) in the bustling markets of New Stetven. As the Capital, it is where the Ruby Fortress and Dragonscale Throne of Choral are, currently held by House Surtova

Port Ice is the ancestral seat of House Surtova, and has many roads connecting it to smaller fishing villiages. During the spring and summer, Port Ice is a bustling hub of fishing, then in the winter the walled city closes up everything and hunkers down to ride the winter out, relying on the food stores built up during the warm months to survive the harsh Brevin winter. It is ruled by King Noleshi’s uncle, Domani Surtova

Restov is the formal capital of Rostland, and the heart of the province’s spirit and culture (despite being the southernmost tip of Brevoy). Restov is owned by no King, though Mayor Ioseph Sellemius does swear fealty to the Dragonscale Throne, and as such is a haven for the Aldori Swordlords and their desire to recall their lost ancient glories before the coming of Choral. Restov is a paradox, in that they value their rough-and-tumble way of life, as well as considering themselves as truly refined Taldanes at heart (IE they are simultaneously CG plucky rebels and Muh Heritage Taldor supporters), though most Taldanes visiting them find them quaint, rustic, and slightly barbarc. Restov is filled with small minor lordlings and sons of merchant lords, who constantly frequent the various dueling schools, get smashed at alehouses and brothels, then get in fights in streetcorners and aleys until dawn. Many firebrands and “plucky CG rebels” want to find a leader to rally them to the cause of Rebelling against King Noleski

Skywatch is an ancient fortress-city along the edges of the Snowrime Peaks, built around a magically preserved observatory, and was once used as a stronghold by the Aldori before getting rekt. After this, Choral invested large amounts of time unearthing and restoring the resto of the observatory, and sinking lost of wealth into magical research of it. On the day the Rogarvians disappeared, Skywatch sealed itself completely shut, no one has been able to get in or out, no contact can be stabled, and magical divinations cannot pierce it. They probably found an EVA, or Numidium, but that’s just me speculating. The observatory and city are ancient and of unknown origin, with the only clue being they housed beings much larger than humans.

The Valley of Fire was where the Aldori made their last stand against Choral, hoping to rap him in the valley and surround him from both sides. Choral didn’t fall for it, and instead had his dragons nuke the ENTIRE valley in dragon fire and wiped out the Aldori forces. The valley is still charred and glassed to this day, and is haunted by tortured shades and fiery shadows of pure hatred.

>Imports, Exports, Economy
Rostland caries most of the economic strength of brevoy, as its fields produce large quantities of grain. The Gronzi Forrest is filled with lumbar operations (though good logging wood has been getting more scarce, forcing woodcutter to travel deeper in the woods), and the Icerime Peaks have lots of mining for ore. Issia produces LOTS of fish. Most of these resources are shipped and sold to the River Kingdoms, Numeria, and Mendev in exchange for money and finished goods from those places.

>Population Demographics
Rostlanders are usually of Taldane stock, while Issians predominately Kellid. There are also notable populations of Dwarves (particularly in the foothills and in towns like Brunderton) and Halflings, and a few other people filtering in from River Kingdoms and Numeria (so Ratfolk aren’t too far-fetched), and occasionally people from Iobaria (sadly I never read Distant Shores and don’t know much about the place). There are also an inordinate amount of people with draconic influence in their blood, particularly Red Dragon. Common languages are Taldan, Hallit, Skald, and Draconic

Brevoy is ruled by the 6 Noble Houses (used to be 7, but Rogarvia is AFK), each of them are of course ruled by their petty regional kings
House Garess is based in the Easter Foothills, and has many strong ties with the local Dwarvish clans
House Lebeda controls the plains southwest of Lake Reykal and New Stetven, and most of the shipping and agriculture around there.
House Lodovka is based on Acuben Island in the North Central coast, has the strongest presence on the Lake of Mists and Viels, and mostly still hold to their waterborne ways
House Medvyed controls most of the Gronzi Forrest, and are a hardy folk who proudly hold and associate with the “Old Ways” of nature worship. Get out of here Witcher.
House Orlovsky control Northeastern Brevoy, and traditionally view themselves as above being onvolved in petty politics. Essentially House Stark.
House Surtova currently holds the Dragonscale Throne, and are a house of scheming and conniving scoundrels and bastards. They control Port Ice and most of Northwestern Brevoy.

Now, are you a bad enough dude to side with a Noble House, challenge the Swordlords, and possible unvocer the secrets of the ancient race that once inhabited the Icerime Peaks and Skywatch? You'd need Kineticists of Porphyra and/or Legendary Kineticist to run a proper kineticist, as the class is jank as shit without them.
>>
>>50892646
How can the kineticist be shit when it has all day blasting!
>>
>>50892655
Because if you want all day blasting, its better to be an Archery Paladin
>>
>>50892577
Then it's hopeless.
What effectively happened with the Kineticist was that it was sabotaged into an outright trap option.

It advertises "all day", but actually has serious daily limitations to most of its abilities - including its primary attack form to a degree. It is punished harshly for not losing an individual ability for the rest of the day when using it, even though the abilities themselves are also "adjusted" to account for being usable all day.

And then many of them aren't/cannot.

Now, people railed against everything from the catastrophic Burn mechanic to the pathetic damage to the sheer disparity in value between all the different elements, but all these cries were not only ignored but mocked and chided through the playtest. The class then went live "as-is", like a repeat of 95% of all Elemental Shaman patches outside Mists of Pandaria EVER over in WoW. Even its "to protect from burn" (underwhelming soul) archetype is a colossal slap to the fucking face; you'll know when you read it.

People got PISSED, and a veritable barrage of 3pp material popped up for the class in comparatively short order. Some of it was suggested fixes to severe deficiencies that had gone ignored, and some got very creative.

But none of them are 1pp.
>>
>>50892685

Amulet of Mighty Fists should be your top priority--the natural armor amulet won't be as good, since you've got enough natural armor as is.
A ring of protection might also help, and of course a belt of bull's strength or physical might for Str and Con.
Apart from that, it should probably be determined by your class. A quick runner's "shirt" would be nice if it's the pre-errata version, and you should consider barding unless you're a caster.
>>
>>50892734
What does blasting even mean anon

This is a serious question - does it have a mechanical meaning to you or is it purely fluff
>>
>>50892503
If you can third-party, you could do it with Spheres of Power.

>>50892734
When blasting = ranged damage, with elemental damage optional. Heck, with an enchanted bow or a spell applied by the team mage (or anybody with UMD and a wand, or just your divine bond) you can cover that too.

Ring of Spell Storing
With a stored Antimagic Field.
Amulet of Mighty Fists or something to enhance your Natural Weapons

For the rest, just look at the most expensive Wondrous Items you can, and see which ones are best for either combat casting or tearing through dudes. Since you're a dragon, you probably can afford those things as well.

Ranged elemental/magical damage with the potential with AoE without using a weapon, under your own power/class features.

Calling an archer or gunsligner a blaster is just as fucking retarded as calling a pouncing barbarian one. I hate when /pfg/ tries to pull that shit.
>>
>>50892746
Blasting generally refers to ranged magical or energy damage, as opposed to purely physical combat forms.

When a standard kineticist is disfavorably compared to an archer in that function, that just goes to show how bad things are.

"Nuking" is usually more in reference to AoE damage in that fashion.

A warsoul emulating tech weapons is a better blaster than a standard kineticist, and a gambler kineticist packs excellent nukes.

>>
>>50892973
I was not disagreeing, just supporting. Broken/OP it ain't.

Similar affair with machineguns: the line may seem intimidating, but a GM will quickly realize that the incompatibility with damage feats keeps the per-hit damage substantially lower. Wiping out some extra goblins is of little complexity to encounter design at mid levels.

Well, one reason is that you can put more power into a swing if you aren't heavily armored. The rotation of the waist can go a long way towards giving that extra oomph to an attack. The more armored you are, the more you are relying on just your arm to swing.

Another reason is that it makes the attacks of others fairly obvious, aiming for two large weakpoints rather than several smaller ones.

other than those two though, i have no idea.

While this is true, simple range of motion is only half of it. There's also the 60 pound average weight bearing down on your whole body. No matter how well trained you are, you will move better when encumbered less. A soldier can run with full gear for a good while, but they can probably go for even longer with light gear that only has bare necessities.

And even if you have a full range, it doesn't mean you aren't slowed down within that range.
>>
>>50893168
While that's true, what's also true is that that weight is relatively evenly distributed among the wearer's body, it's not like you're wearing all 60 of those pounds on your back like a sack, so while that is a lot of weight it's not nearly as bad as it sounds, especially for a well-muscled knight.
>>
>>50893168
Actually, plate made for proper combat was only 30-40lbs, with the heaviest ones around 50. This was carefully distributed over the entire body thanks to the multiple layers and straps securing it.

Armor made specially for jousting was a different story and could top 100 pounds, but was designed specifically to let you tank hits in a controlled situation with minimal required movements (you were often winched onto your horse).
>>
>>50893182
>>50893205
Really, this depends entirely on the style and type of plate armor we're talking about. Dependent on that, it could swing either way. The biggest factor is if the waist is one solid piece or a number of smaller ones for maneuverability.
>>
Comfort Mithral Fullplate has an armor check penalty of 0, which is pretty good.
>>
>>50893253
Wrong.
>>
>>50892619
Half-Orc has a solid enough Mystic FCB. You could go full orc - abuse the +4 strength with Prodigious Two-Weapon Fighting (and they can use it too), though Half Orc is gonna have better save DCs.
>>
>>50893260
Full plate is -5

Mithral is -3
Masterwork is -1
Comfort is -1

That's -5

Or am I thinking of Hellknight plate?
>>
>>50893287
Whether the mithral and masterwork reduction stack is very up to interpretation and I'm not sure if it's ever been clarified.
>>
>>50893287
>Full plate is -5
-6
>>
>>50893313
Why wouldn't it?
>>
Which one is more poisonous and toxic for the Molthune game, Staypuft or 2hu?
>>
>>50893313
I think for something to be mithril, or made of a special material at all, its automatically counted as masterwork, as you would need specialty skills to work the material to start with.
>>
>>50893324
DHB
>>
>>50893217
THAT is determined by whether it was made for jousting or for fighting.

Bad quality decoratives may also have had such issues, but those were not made to be worn, such as certain beautifully engraved armors given to... notably uh... large... lords.
>>
>>50893287
Full plate is -6. Hellknight plate is -5, but that's already Masterwork.

You want Mithril for -3 (Which doesn't stack with Masterwork)

A Steelbone Frame for -2

And then either Comfort or the Armor Expert trait for another -1
>>
>>50893322
>Spell failure chances for armors and shields made from mithral are decreased by 10%, maximum Dexterity bonuses are increased by 2, and armor check penalties are decreased by 3 (to a minimum of 0).

Mithral armors are explicitly always masterwork, therefore you could make a case that the -3 already includes the masterwork reduction.
>>
>>50893322
Because it doesn't, as Mithral is and already includes the masterwork changes.

You cannot then masterwork a mithral plate. It was masterwork to begin with.
>>
>>50893324
As bad as 2hu can be I don't see how it's even a competition with staypuft.

it was mind-shattering to read through that.
>>
>>50893365
I would disagree as all of those are listings of Mirthal's properties. If it included masterwork it should be listed. Otherwise I have no reason to assume that.
>>
>>50893439
IT DOES.
goddamnit staypufft fucking read the fucking rules for once.
>>
>>50893451
Are you guys just assuming that people are who you say they are or is there some secret tech to knowing who's who that I just wasn't aware of until now?
>>
>>50893439
This is more for 3.5 than it is PF, but if you look up the chain shirt the table for the cost of special materials has a note near the bottom that states that the cost includes the masterwork component.

And since 3.5 and PF are more or less interchangeable on a core level, i believe that would apply to PF as well.

>Mithril Items are always masterwork
>Mithril items reduce ACP by 3.

This is not a difficult prospect to understand.

No I mean it does not say the reduce to APC includes masterwork. Assuming that is does is literally adding rules text that isn't there.

I see what you're saying. I'm saying it's adding rules text that isn't there.

>>50893476
No I'm saying Mithral is always masterwork. I don't deny that. What I'm arguing is that the -3 APC doesn't include it and there is no reason to assume it does.
>>
>>50893509
If the cost for the item includes the cost of the masterwork component, it is safe to assume the rest of the stats include the masterwork changes as well.
>>
>>50893509
There is reason to assume it does.

Because Mithril is always masterwork, there's no goddamn point in giving it stats OUTSIDE of Masterworking.

You literally cannot have non-masterworked mithril, so there's zero point in having non-masterworked mithril stats.

This Mithral Full Plate has +3 max dex mod and -3 ACP, which is consistent with the ACP reduction of mithral not stacking with masterwork reducing ACP.

This is compelling evidence in my mind. Ok I relent. They should specify the stats include masterwork in the entry.

There are many other materials that are treated as masterwork but do not expressly reduce ACP. Thus it could be interpreted that the Masterwork ACP reduction is in addition to the material's normal properties, which may or may not also include an additional ACP reduction.
>>
>>50893616
Or that those materials would worsen the ACP if not used with high skill.
