And now, Legacy, Vintage, and Modern get zero official acknowledgment.

The likelihood of Standard coming back is pretty low because of how "game" populations work.

Basically if you want a game to "go" one of two things has to happen.

One, you have an established group of people to indoctrinate any new people looking to play. That way, one or two individuals can find a place to play with little effort.

Two, if One is not available, you need a massive group of people to self-organize and commit to getting something started to establish the One-state.

This applies to all games whether it be sports, cards, or board games. Standard is so dead that a One state is not actually a thing right now in many places large and small. Certainly there are enough diehards in large communities to keep Standard alive but for the most part they've killed Standard so hard that you no longer have a foundation of people to welcome the individuals coming to play alone and as strangers.

I have a theory when it comes to land-death. Basically, whenever land-death can happen (based on turns and when converted mana cost is achieved) it effectively reduces the cost of playable spells in the format by 1.

So if Stone Rain was around and was good, suddenly 3CMC+ spells aren't going to be that great because you're going to need to stabilize if you get hit and it doesn't do any good if you have a bunch of 3CMC+ spells in your hand. Wizards has decided that this situation is not great. But you could imagine that it would be fine in a format with mana dorks and ramp at 2 so long as they themselves cannot play the land-death (T1 Birds T2 Stone Rain isn't going to be great). Fulminator Mage off a Deathrite Shaman probably is too fucking good or just Fulminator alone is too good.

With cards like Avalanche Riders, Ruinblaster, and Tectonic Edge, it meant that 3CMC is okay because by the time they cast it, you will probably have 4 mana and will stabilize at 3. We've lived through these situations before and they were fairly acceptable and 4CMC.

Why we can't return to a Tectonic Edge or Avalanche Riders sort of world is beyond me though. It has to be a value Stone Rain and not that shitty Stone Rain at 4CMC we got recently.

No they don't cut a card in half. It means in 1 case you are most likely and equally likely to get either 1 or 2. To put it another way, if you get 2 cases you are likely to get 3 masterpieces between the 2 of them, 1.5x2=3.

They never intentionally cut cards in half. If one is damaged, that's a misprint. Players wouldn't want half cards in their boosters (except for meld cards).
