Man I wish I could ever be rich eunough to own this or pic rel. That were one of few pieces of Blanche art that made Warhammer for me, back in 1st Ed. WHRP.

I bought some 90's figs lately, but I'm legitemately sad that they won't make it Made To Order, because folks will be too busy ordering 40k troops that got recently replaced.

I also want to learn how to paint figures like Blanche. Guy is epic, sad that he has next to no impact on modern GW models stylistic, especially when Olhammer is dead.

Maybe on 30 years of RT they make some old models... But most likely they put out some boring new stuff with beakie helmet and call it a day.

>>
>>50859236

those look amazing

why was oldhammer so much better than the shit today
>>
>>50864506
First things first, they used to make artworks and take loose inspiration from it. Now their artwork is copycating the models as close as they can, because is thought as a form of ad.

But also it was made by guys who had many interesting life paths, mixing outside ideas. They were studying history, they were actual witers, some started in acients wargaming, one (can't remember who) abbadoned attempts to get career in diplomacy, they came from all walks of life, because it sounded interesting and they were young and broke.

If you read portfolios of present GW staff they are guys who Warhammered (or rather 40kekd) so hard they went straight to GW.

They are detached from outside artistic influences thus bland.
>>
>>50864599

thing is oldhammer art was itself half the joy of warhammer

i remember what a effect those old posters had on me as a kid, the psychedelic arrays of monumental destruction all in asimetric multilayered compositions

that sob poster with dem legs in shiny black powerboots probably added to my later deveoping fetishes more than many things

its like the whole thing had a soul, it was total gothic punk, weird, garish and trippy

realy miss that nowdays

The design philosophy behind 40k plastic kits was to make them canavas to express Your Guys creativity.

Did not work as most folks did not bother and it kidnda backfired into seting itself resulting in, for example, Attack of Cadian Clones wiping off variety, one of basic Guard's qualities, from the face of the setting.

Having them replaced by Dead Corpses of Krieg ;^) would not help either sadly.

holy shit I was about to post this exact picture to prove you that Nemesis has fucking nothing to do with Lone Sloane.

Torquedara Varenkor is just a minor antagonist in Lone Sloane, the evil emperor is called Shaan, and the fanatical assholes are an entirely different faction.

The only similarity between Lone Sloane and Nemesis is the basic "space rogue with demonic powers opposes a space tyrant" premise.

Aside from that there are zero tangible similarities.

Lone Sloane has an extremely grave and solemn tone, zero humor, everything is epic and grandiose and all the characters speak like they're from an ancient play. And of course graphically it's Doré+Kirby+Monsu Desiderio+psychedelia.

Nemesis is visually way more punk, way more cartoonish (then again it depends on the illustrator), much more light-hearted, full of black humor and jokes, and it's also somewhat preachy. And the characters speak like your average cartoon villains.

Even the cultists of the red redemption in Lone Sloane aren't "AAAARGH PURGE AND SCOURGE!".

RT imperial army were all cut from the same cloth, dude. Being able to take things like squats, ogryn, marines, robots and mechanicus were what gave them variety, which is honestly about the same as it is today (minus the squats).

granted the imperial army had way cooler gear than the cadians
>>
>>50865216

That's some cool stuff you have in this thread.

It's good to know that 40k and Fantasy art was part of interesting, more general direction of nerdy art, not lucky shot that ricocheted into Horus Heresy Teen Drama.

I will have to give a closer look to those comics, just thanks.

Can we talk about the Rogue Trader system for a bit? I totally get love for the Oldhammer models, but what really gets me is the gameplay (and to some extent, the less grimderp setting). The smaller battle scale, the high level of randomization, the quasi-RPG elements... HNNG

Except cadians werent really a blank canvas and were a bit of a pain in the arse to convert.

Also the fact GW stopped selling Bitz and started bundling weapons as part of the basic sprue meant customisation became an expensive fucking chore

I miss the Marine Close Combat sprue and similar you used to get

How to fix?

1) Buyable weapon packs - Varities of Lasweapons, Bolters, Helmets

2) Close Combat, Heavy Weapon Kits

3) Bling kits - Charms, talismans, helmets, cloaks, all the good stuff.

All of which you can buy to supplement the basic plastic kits.

4) For the plastic kits actually make them a blank canvas, no more encrusted bling or fake fire effects. I hate the new Nagash model and similar for all the crappy magic effects that are on the kits.

there was some more that went into it, a lot of moorcock for example, new wave sci fy in general, like herbert, a lot of references to totalitarism and religion, a decent amount of occultism which is unavoidable for brits at that time, enough psychedelics and a load of pop-culture reference

it would seem they were playing around with tipical tropes like the nature of humankind, the tendency to get stuck in repetitive, ciclical patterns, the basic human tendencies as manifest trough history, it was all sort of archetypal

but realy its whfb in spaaace, which in a way makes it less generic, since whfb was totaly generic tolkinesque/15th century, whoever was making that stuff obviously had a thing for HRE history, so 40k is pretty much 15th century in space with gothic and napoleonic elements

its these little details, concerning ordinary humans and the disturbing, horror tyer shit they get to go trough on a dayly basis that made real grimdark grimdark

like that story about how they remove the right brain lobe and replace it with a bionic equivalent of a punchcard machine, or the lobotomised zombies that get their limbs replaced with machinery

all these things being ''necesary'' because the alternative is to fall under the ruinous powers, and become undone by unimaginable horror

>I bought some 90's figs lately, but I'm legitemately sad that they won't make it Made To Order, because folks will be too busy ordering 40k troops that got recently replaced.

They just recently started taking requests for what people would like to see old model wise for the Order faction for AoS. Granted by the wording they used it seems like it might not apply to any models who don't belong to a faction that is in the Order book, but that hasn't stopped people from asking.

>Guy is epic, sad that he has next to no impact on modern GW models stylistic, especially when Olhammer is dead.

>not lucky shot that ricocheted into Horus Heresy Teen Drama.

Considering that Priestly, among possible others, was still involved with 40k when the Index Astartes articles that set the framework for the current Heresy, it's hard to act like the original creators had no part in making the Horus Heresy what it is. You're free to dislike it, but don't pretend there was some grand vision that was twisted into something else.

>>50866299

The problem with weapon packs is probably the fact that they'd have to be done in plastic and on a sprue and are possibly too expensive for not much return. This is off the top of my head the only reason I can think of why GW has only recently put few of such things out, mostly for Space Marines and Stormcast Eternals, while on the other hand FW has no problem producing variations of the same type of weapon.

Nagash is a character and thus one could argue not supposed to be an entirely blank canvas. Even still I'd wager the answer to such complaints is not for GW to change what they're doing, but for you to look into the possibility of trying to convert the model.

They've got to be well into sunk costs fallacy at this point since no-one gives a flying fuck about that game.

Whilst that is still fairly small, it is a Dwarf army after all, agreed. Going much larger whilst still using 28mm figures didn't really improve the gameplay much, especially since full units could still fairly regularly get shoved off the table in single turn over-runs in later editions.
>>
Image related is pretty damn big for the time, but then it's full of large goblin units which really couldn't get away with being only a dozen strong.

Agreed in turn. If anything I'd prefer it to go smaller from there, not bigger.

>>50872632
Yes, with a proviso, of course, for the horde armies -- just as High Elves will always end up fewer than average.

And Chaos will be a tiny mixed bag... well unless you're bulking out on thugs and allies.

Even big game companies were tiny back then, hell even TSR didn't discover editing until the mid 90's.

This is pro-'umie revionism. Those guardsmen were treated humanely actually died from Nurgle's Rot outbreak.

Maybe from individual hobbyists, and even that I'd be doubtful of, but the displays at Warhammer World are pretty nice.

I actually kind of like the look of those cards for what they are.

Man, I wish we had an updated sculpt of 80s scifi guardsmen. Better sculpting, better proportions, same style.

W-well, I've got one mini

And it's less 'still' as 'I think it's baller so I got one'

But still!

No, from the very beginning the books were full of pictures of the corpse on the Golden Throne.

Now days all you'd get if you showed up with this army is moaning about how your slayer's hair colours are 'wrong' and how 'dwarfs don't use swords' or some bullshit.

I'm amazed it even managed to be a profitable concern at a time when jetbikes cost £2.50 apiece and a paper Lone Wolf gamebook probably cost a pound or something.

So were these just one on one roleplay sessions, or a CYOA where you press keys to make a choice? It seems intriguing.

We need to find some kind of first hand reports of these phone games, or even surviving recordings. It could be a lost avenue of /tg/ related stuff, lads.

Well, I have seen his Silver Tower works, they reasemble this what he did for Vampire Counts. Good stuff, but he has more important things to do and can't have that much impact after the stroke, because it's mirracle he still works at all. He also seems to have purely artistic sideprojects, what leaves more and more in hands of people who have different style and I don't mean anything hostile in it. I'm certainly not suprised not seeing his stuff on some big AoS realses, for they have other style IMHO.

Please, you are at work, so spare your damge-controlling effort on actual damage. ;^)

And sorry, have you read any of those HH novels? Horus Heresy is not a bad concept lorewise (especially for one created to ease up production of Adeptus Titanicus models) but writing is shit and powerfull characters from the legendary times turned out spergs with internal problems right from teen drama in soap space opera of over 40 books. It's just that books were among worst GW products for years and it's easier to tempt and tease with shards of a story in armybook/codex/WD article than write actual fiction.

Inquisitor - great concept, terrible execution - starting with having Gav "I'm fuckin' retarded" Thorpe write the rules. Not to mention way WAY to many typos and rules mistakes, or the fact that there's literally more pages of 'advertisements' for the minis in the book then there are pages for the campaign rules in a game that's supposedly campaign driven. Or Gav's retarded 'more edgy than a Ginsu Knife set' retcon of classic backstory. Then they added the 'alternate / 54mm scale' for the minis and the insistence that all minis must be 'WYSIWYG' - for a campaign. 'Oh, you wanted to upgrade your gear? Guess you'll be hacking up that mini you spent all that time painting. Good luck.' Inquisitor is an amazing game - mainly for the sheer number "WTF were these noobs thinking?" mistakes that were made. Which is a pity since the concept was cool and many of the minis were excellent.
