It's obvious that the D&D cleric was at least partly inspired by Moses and similar ancient prophets with mythical powers

Spells like shape water, swarm of locusts, etc

What other classes have such clear bases in reality

Charlemagne's paladins

The Frankish and Gaelic Barbarians.

Knights/cavaliers
Assassins (they cut out the hashish though)
Wizards/Sorcerers are based on Zoroastrian mystics if I'm not mistaken
Duelists, in whatever editions they're present, often seem to be Three Muskteers-esque swashbuckling, charming rogues

Wasn't Berserker rage and running around naked a more Germanic thing? The Gauls were considered semi-civilized and the Franks were the most gigantic Romaboos around, to the point where Charlemagne quite literally went WE WUZ ROMANS 'N SHIET.

Wait, doesn't that mean that duelists are the class closest to modern infantry in regards to skills and training (give or take a couple centuries)?
