Hey can we have a discussion about how magical the real world actually can be? Could you imagine just how bewildered ancient civilisations would be at mankind's powers today?
For example
>massive magical leylines that allow transfer of energy and information
>hand sized devices that glow and allow people to be in near constant, telepathical communication
I think it's neat as fuck.

>small oracles in every household that answer every question you have about the world

Kinda makes me sad Numenera is just "standard medieval fantasy setting but all magic is secretly technology".
>>50804674
Yeah fuck that shit, advanced enough technology is indistinguishable from magic

>large humming shiny box that keeps food edible for alarming periods of time
desu I reckon constant access to light would be pretty amazing to even humans 500 years ago

Not to mention we have some badass monsters and the farthest you get from civilization, the tougher the random encounter tables get.
>>50804325
It's neat, but in actual PnP game it's difficult to maintain this kind of mysticism.
>>50804780
luckily we have these metal staves that harness explosions to kill things at a distance very, very accurately

Kinda shilling here, but after Golden kamui i disagree with this weird notion in many RPGs that non-magical beasts are only low-level opponents.
Even with guns and shit bears are fucking terrifying.

consider maybe an aesthetically magical setting, ie high fantasy clothing, but with all the trappings of the modern world.all the devices still look exactly the same
>>50804792
That's true, but that would be true for dragons as well. It takes nothing away from how awesome our monster manual is.
>>50804820
I like the way pratchett did it - pseudo-modern technology being able to function on technology OR magic.Or on some ideas being actually sentient which somewhat falls into "magic" but somewhat doesn't.
Stuff like slime dishwashers and totally-not-boomboxes in D&D are silly though. Logical, maybe (i HATE the "in a highly magical world all villages must be strictly mundane" trope), but silly.
>>50804914
Oh no, I wasn't trying to take away from our monsters being fearsome as fuck. I just think it's neat that we have adapted to this fucking terrifying setting by inventing these nigh on magical devices to combat it

Shit, that looks like a lot of fun in that town!
