I'm gonna run a campaign set in some fantasy version of the middle east, "Arabian nights" it's what is called apparently.
What movies/series/books/animes that could serve as inspiration would you recommend?
Bonus points if it's about thieves.
>>
Dreamwork's Sinbad, the one where Sinbad is voiced by Dicaprio
>>
In terms of books, 1001 Arabian Nights is required reading for that sort of thing.
>>
>>50782094

1001 Nights. It's a story of a woman who is to be put to death by her husband tomorrow, so she distracts him with a story for 1001 Nights.
>>
>>50782094
Disney's Aladdin and the film Conan The Barbarian, not because they're good sources but because they're what your players will expect.

As a general guideline

>Black and white morality
>Dangerous treks through the desert
>A sneering vizier scheming for power
>Sorcerers, but no more than one or two. Keep magic rare
>A dangerous djinn who has strict rules about asking for questions/wishes. Best not to be a dick about the wishes though
>Someone gets spat on by a camel
>>
>>50782449
I actually checked the OSR trove but couldn't find it there.

1001 Nights is literally the inspiration for everything 'Arabian Nights'. Aladdin and Sinbad, suggestions in this thread, are stories from 1001 Nights.

>>50782530
You don't want black and white morality, you want legalistic morality. Justifying your actions based off of honor, law, and precedent. People get away with some pretty messed up shit in 1001 Nights, while other people get destroyed for almost no reason.

That's a cute girl kobold.

Can this thread be about kobolds please?
How do kobolds fit into arabian nights settings? Since they're cold-blooded, would they be better suited to be a dominant race?

I have a ton of Al-Qadim stuff. If you keep the thread up until California Noon time, I can upload it.

>>
What is a good system to run this sort of campaign?
>>
>>50787598
Depends on what you want to get out of it. If you want things to be as actually insane as the tales are, you'd probably want something like fate, because it's all narrative at that point. if you just want some of the aesthetics, then it depends on what type of campaign you want to have.

Check out The Nightmares Underneath. It spends some time outlining this concept.

>You don't want black and white morality, you want legalistic morality. Justifying your actions based off of honor, law, and precedent. People get away with some pretty messed up shit in 1001 Nights, while other people get destroyed for almost no reason.

It's the first time I "got" and understood a Law based society. It's also interesting how they apparently revered scholars and interpreters of the world of God.

Also read this beauty for some nice middle eastern epic and heroism, in case you and your party gets tired of thieves. It's not arab and 100% based on pre-islamic myth, but so are half of the tales in the One Thousand and One Nights anyways.

It's long as fuck, before attempting to read it all try to get one of the versions that only includes the parts about Rostam and co.
>>
>>50793044
>in case you and your party gets tired of thieves
Hard if it's in the same campaign, since the game premise is robbing from a really wealthy sultan.
But I will check it out if they ask for more games in this setting.

The writer is from Paraguay and used to published in Argentina. Since the crisis its an italian comic, but you shouldn't have problems finding the first hundred in spanish.

That is very true. But it was also a story added by a Frenchman after the fact who claimed he was told the story by a man from Aleppo.
>>
>>50796177
I know this but, considering that the original on hundred nights are just a collection of stories taken from everywhere, that's a minor fault. Specially if we believe him in saying that he heard the tale from a middle easteners, which would put Aladdin not in the original book but in the folklore.

Still a bit sad that it became the most popular one though. Specially since we got the movie and now based Jaffar is a villain for some reason.

Sorry to burst your bubble broseph, but Kobolds are still likely to be the slave race. I can see them being used by Djinn as well as whatever Dragons are there. However, they fit into the setting much better and you can play one without sticking out of place there, though you'd have to play the Servant card on a few occasions when you are with the party.
>>
>>50783995
In something like Al-Qadim / Zakhara? They work pretty well. Their communal nature meshes with Zakharan ethics, and the native Dragons to the setting (Vishap) click pretty well with Kobold tactics (avoidance, traps, subterfuge) for those who don't go native.

In the official material Lizardfolk tend to be one of the more common demihuman types present, but with that being before the rise of Kobold popularity it'd be rather easy to make the switch.

Oh, and with rather sizable non-human demographics in some of the cities / areas, along with respectable population numbers to start (both of which you can find in the Lands of Fate document) you could be looking at districts cropping up of specific demographics. Hiyal for example has ~120,000 demihumans as permanent residents, with beggars and transients increasing that number to ~180,000. Even if Kobolds accounted for just 5% of those numbers (fairly small when you consider this would mean numerical parity with groups like Elves and Hobgoblins and Ogres), that's ~6k-~9k. A small Kobold city within a city (one that, again, could plausibly be boosted to twice or even thrice that number).

>>50799705
>>50799979
>>50783995
I did plan to add plenty of reptile humanoids (dragonborn and lizardfolk mostly), and despite having a kobold player in the game, I didn't consider featuring them prominently. These posts changed my mind.
>>
>>50800713
An idea I've been pushing for a while: Most setting/systems make lizardfolk swamp-dwellers. Which makes little sense to me. Sure, alligators live in swamps, but LIZARDS have a variety of different habitats. So I replace the swim-speed and aquatic abilities of Lizardfolk with a climb-speed, and I make them cliff-dwellers, like the Hopi tribe of native americans. Imagine a village built into the sheer vertical cliffs of a mesa or canyon, inhabited by bipedal lizard-folk. Perfectly situated to catch maximum sunlight exposure, ideal for basking, and incredibly difficult to besiege or invade. It fits desert/ wasteland settings much better.

A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS, A THOUSAND AND ONE YEARS AGO... THE MAGICAL CITY OF BAGDAD EXISTED ONCE, TIMELESS AND IMPOSING.

HERE THE SOUQS AND ALLEYS ARE ALWAYS POPULATED, EITHER BY DAY OR BY NIGHT. GLOSSY FRUITS ARE SHOWN NEXT TO WEAPONS WHOSE WORKSMANSHIP MAY NOT ALWAYS GUARANTEE A SHARP CUT, AND SILKS ARE SET OVER JARS FILLED WITH HONEY MIXED WITH WONDROUS SPICES...

Come! Gather round!

Gather round, and listen to the wondrous tale of the magic lamp!

Listen of how Al-a-din was but a child when he found the power of the djinn...

Who revealed himself as a faithful and powerful ally...

...And so, Al-a-din became our beloved Caliph who he is today.

Djinn! Come here! I am not finished yet!

Come! I command it!

Your command...

I don't like orders, Al-a-din.

I care not. The lamp makes you my servant.

And you haven't answered my question.

A question? I see...

My future Djinn! I wan't to know!

I am forbidden to reveal it, and you know it.

Careful. I may not be able to destroy the lamp, but...

Nothing stops me from throwing it to the dephs of the sea so that your only companions will be the crabs and the sea sludge.

I see...

I can say only this Caliph Al-a-din...

You shall die by the hand of your son.

My son? Which?! I have a hundred wives and even more children!

That is for you to unravel.

Nothing if set in stone Caliph.

I am here my lord!

Gather our most loyal soldiers immediately.

He wouldn't... no, this is horrible!

Something! There must be something I can do!

What's the matter Daina?

Al-a-din has gone mad!

He wants to slay our sons!

But... our children are his!

That's why!

Any living child is a danger for you Al-a-din.

You should be grateful of your soldiers zeal.

My wives... Why?

Do you not undertand?

The challenged your authority my lord!

We have protected the very base of your rulership!

What was...? someone's alive!

Daina! Dearest!

Al-a-din! He killed our son! That monster ate him!

Silly me! I missed this one!

Unhand her Djinn! I should've never listened to you!

It was I who made you Caliph, Al-a-ddin. Before that all you were was a just a street urchin.

Wife cheated on him, so he kills her. He then becomes a serial killer that habitually marries women to kill them off. Princess Scheze-whatever has a cunning plan to get rich by marring him and survive: tell the beginning of a story every night, end it next night, and use the spare time left to start another story. Repeat the process for 1001 nights, and the dude's forgiven her and forgotten his homicidal tendencies.

Here's an example: in the Islamic World there's a small story about a thief that broke into the Sultan's palace to steal some jewelry.

Upon breaking into the palace, he discovered a mysterious white powder, tasting it, he realized it was salt. According to the ancient laws of hospitality, he was now a guest in the Sultan's domain. As a guest, he returned everything he stole from the Sultan and left the palace peacefully.

The Sultan found out about this after the fact, and approached the thief later and showered him in riches for his upstanding honor. It didn't matter that the thief was stealing from him, what mattered is that he was so devoted to hospitality that he was willing to *put all the stolen goods back* rather than break the custom.

In Arabian Nights you also have one of the "villains" being a woman who was kidnapped, raped by a Djinn, and made into its wife. She's a villain because she tries to pressure other men into sleeping with her and keeps their rings as trophies.

It may be less *law* that's important in the setting, so much as custom. Hell, the entire story of Arabian Nights involves a Sultan that sleeps with women then executes them the next night because his "evil" wives cucked him; it ends with Sharahazad distracting him with a story each night and bearing many of his children, at which point he's redeemed and stops killing women.

You'll note that the Sultan isn't seen as "villainous" in the context of the story: he's doing some bad things, but he isn't an "evil" that's vanquished. Sharahazad outwits him by playing by the rules, just acting cunning.

Either his first wife or some lover of his, the edition I read leant towards the latter.

Basically, he has killed most marriable young women by the time he gets to Scheherazade (the vizier's daughter), who goes with a friend of hers who tells her to tell a tale to while away the time. Every night, just before dawn, they stop at a cliffhanger, so the caliph wants her to continue tomorrow. The next night she would finish it and start another, again ending on a cliffhanger.

Some 3 years later, the guy had fallen in love with her and at least in the edition I had already had children with her, so he stopped being a dick.

Makes all those stories about the virtuous sultan and the scheming vizier kinda interesting in perspective, doesn't it?

Also, if the name Scheherazade does not sound Arabic, well, it is assumed that most of those tales were Persian.

you fucking better link to that thread here. I swear if I miss the rest of this because it's on one of two completely different boards, and posted while I am at work.

I will be slightly annoyed.

I HAVE AWOKEN, RESUMING
>>50823074
I'd be honored, but I'd rather advice you get a proofreader, just in case, this translation is mostly literal word-by-word, rather have a native English speaker give it a read

>>50823018
thanks for the encouragement, feel it's better to ask first, would it be a problem if I post the rest here in /tg/ in a new thread?

Since you payed your share, you get the seat with less splinters.
SIMBAD!
Ah, Kazpar... what a coincidence!
Glad to see you, I remember last time we had our little argument interrupted.
Simbad...
Excuse me, a friend reserved a seat for me...
Huhhh?
W... Where'd you come from?
he's a little thin, messy haircut up to his shoulders
Azna!
This is too much
I'll go to my quarters
have everyone row in silence
But Captain... A woman on board is bad luck!
I DON'T CARE!
>>
>>50824264

The spell of Kinque?
Oh, no!
My lady, mercy!
I want the to suffer...

Noooooo...
You shall be my eyes!
Search every corner of the land!
Only the one who finds them shall regain their human form!

AWAY FROM THE SPIRES AND PALACES THAT RISE ABOVE THE HILLS IS THE LOWER CITY, GOING ALONG THE EDGE OF THE RIVER, AMID THE MARSHES AND IT'S BUGS
Bagdad! End of the line! Everybody out!
Ouch, my back! thank God for dry land after three weeks on board!
This is Bagdad? doesn't smell very nice!
Belive me, the stench would be worse if you could smell people's thoughts...

and keep wasting the fortune I've amassed for you Caliph Al-a-din
Festivities are no waste. I share my wealth with my people
There was a time when you cared for them genie, and must I remind you I own you?
Oh mighty Caliph, the program for your 60th birthday needs some finishing touches...
Must I deal with these details?
It just that... you know what's best for the people...
and since your popularity has been rather low lately
Very well... I'm listening.
after your wives parade, there'll be a procession of a thousand snake charmers, followed by the sword-eaters...
but we still don't have a price for the knife throwing competition.
choose something from the vault, I care not what
you are generous my lord, the people shall remember this.
No wait... I have a better idea.
there's been rumors abound that I'm nothing but the Djinn's puppet.
The people will see who's in charge...
so the prize shall be one wish granted. BOI
and you'll make it happen Djinn.
What?! you'd give my services for anyone? even to a... peasant?
Enough. I have spoken.

BAGDAD'S MARKET OCCUPIES TWO THIRDS OF THE CITY, KNIFE SELLERS AND SHARPENERS ARE MAKING A FORTUNE AS THE CALIPH'S BIRTHDAY DRAWS NEARER...
... WHILE A CERTAIN GIRL HAS SPENT THE LAST THREE DAYS VISITING EVERY PHARMACY AND HERBALIST'S SHOP.
does this remedy truly curse any ailment?
all of them.
a secret recipe passed down by generations, a true panacea.
then, could it even heal the pest?
The pest?! the pest has hit Bagdad?!
No, no, not at all! It was just a rhetorical question...
Back! Don't touch me!

Thanks. That is fascinating. I'd love to run something like that but I guess you would have to be steeped in the lore and culture of the time, which would actually make it hard to pull off well.
