Hey /tg, how do I make a character with an imaginary friend that isn't cringy or edgy? Like, an extension of their own subconscious which adds to roleplaying.
>>
>>50753692
Unless they're beneath the age of six, there is no way. Even then, it's vaguely strange. But still, for what purpose?
>>
Just make your character religious.
>>
Well in Pathfinder you play a class that either gets an animal companion or an Eidolon
>>
>Give the imaginary friend a stupid name, like Clarence
>Constantly voice Clarence's opinion on every issue, no matter how small
>Interrupt other players during roleplay with "WHAT'S THAT CLARENCE? YOU THINK [PLAYER] IS A LIMP DICK?"
>Spend entire sessions arguing with the DM over whether or not Clarence gets to roll for attacks
>Sob loudly over Clarence's imaginary dead aunt

I like it!

As long as you don't take it too far, this could be a fun joke.

The character shouldn't do it SO much as to annoy people, but rather just enough that you create the expectation in people's minds.

Oh, he's going to say something about Clarence? Clarence liked blue flowers!

If done right, the other players may speak to Clarence as much as you do, even though they cannot hear him.

Rip, Clarence's aunt. You will be missed
>>
>>50753692
A semi-insane sorcerer who's with Multiple Personality Disorder who talks to himself is interesting in my mind.
You could also get an Eidolon.
>>
>>50753692
Make it clear that the character is suffering from some heavy trauma that manifests itself.
>>
>>50753884
>>
Best way: pen pal.
Have your character consistently waking up with letters from his best friend, saying he's watching, always ahead scouting out. Turns out your just a Fucking scizo who scribbles this crap during fitful sleep. Work with the gm here so the players are unsure Wether this dude is really some antisocial tracker or is the player is nuts.

I like this too. I don't even need the friend to be imaginary, if they aren't present. Their influence can be felt without ever speaking to them.

Especially if the friend never writes back, and my character isn't sure if their friend even gets the letters

Do it like >>50753753 says, except you also spend a few character creation points on it and have the DM sometimes secretly give you some minor details on the plot. Clarence brings them up casually in discussions.

Another good idea. How about he's possessed, but not by an edgy demon. he's possessed by a pixie who plays pranks, usually on him.

The pixie is a friendly spirit, who enjoys playing in his dreams, and doesn't want him to die (because then IT dies) but other than that, the pixie wants every day to be as fun as possible, or it gets bored.
>>
Dobson doesn't have as big an impact on us as it would on /v/, so please keep it there when possible.

Also try making the player a paladin of a false god. At first he's a fighter with some extra moral restrictions, and over time with faith and maybe a converted believer or two, it begins to manifest itself as a real deity. By 12th level you could be the greatest follower of a great god.
Just ask your GM and fellow players first before playing anything like it to make sure it's okay and not hogging up the spotlight.

Turn him into a puppeteer. It's a half solution since his "friend" isn't really imaginary, but it might work provided you have enough charisma and comedic timing to pull it off. The puppet can then "interact" with other players too.

In my current campaign, my fighter and I kinda skimmed the guidelines for how to RP an Aasimar's celestial guide from VGM. Apparently, It's only supposed to appear at crucial times or in visions and shit. We just use it as a holy tulpa pretty much. Only he can hear and see her and can call upon her pretty much any time. She serves as his moral guide because my player wanted to play the idea of Lawful Stupid personified.

>"THERE IS NO LAW IN THE WOODS, THEREFORE MUGGING THIS GUY IS PERFECTLY LEGAL. HAHA, JUSTICE!"
>"Yes, but it's not nice. This old man hasn’t done anything to you or anyone else. Please leave him alone, the gods of good would not look kindly upon this."

>Clarence says that merchant is lying.
>Clarence! That's not very nice! The Paladin is not a limp- wristed faggot.
>Clarence won't go in that dungeon. He says it's filled with trolls.

Make most of your skill checks Clarence related.
>Pass an Appraise check
>Wow, Clarence, that's a lot of money. Do you really think this idol is worth that much?
>Fail a Sense Motive
>Clarence believes you're telling the truth, so I trust you, too.
>Do really well on a Profession (unrelated job)
>Yeah, Clarence used to be a carpenter. He says you need to sand WITH the grain. Also, you need better quality nails.

Clarence is a better man than all of us.

Around here where I'm from, you can take pictures freely but if you are going to publish it somewhere, you need the permission from the person you are photographing.

Also. I bet he cares for the exposure for his art but not his face and that is perfectly understandable.

>D&D
>Your +9 Mage attacks the hoard and fails! You lose!
My brain is struggling to understand this sentence and comes up with a blank.

- There is no such thing as a "+9" Mage. Level 9 Mage? Maybe. But not "+9".
- Mage is not a core class of D&D. I'm not even sure there is such a class in D&D.
- "Attacks the hoard"? Like the hoard of gold? Or did he mean "horde", like horde of orcs? In either case, this shit makes no sense.
- "Attacks the horde and FAILS"? This is the most lackluster attack description I've heard in a while, the only thing worse being "You attack and deal 10 damage".
- You don't lose in a game of D&D. Die? Sure. Fail to accomplish objectives and bring about the end of the world? Why not. But there are no victory/loss conditions in D&D.

I think I've just gone fully numb, but more importantly, I'm baffled by how vague and nondescript the sentence is, as if he's talking about some sort of generic RPG.

It's like when someone asks "What country do you like the most?", you answer "Ruritania". It's not smart, it's not funny and you look like a fucking idiot after it.

Ah Dobson, AKA Tom Preston, AKA Catty Nebulart

For something specific I'm confused why he bitches so much about them 'changing' Samus from her supposed green-haired roots but then goes on to absolutely love Other M where the creator has degenerated into making her into his fetishistic waifu & turned Adam into his own psychotic self-insert, defending it fanatically.
>>

Probably because Dobs is a waifufag and a woman who doesn't need a man (ie: him, as all other men are *the enemy*) doesn't fit the bill for him.

Dobson was specifically talking about the musical 1776, which ran on Broadway and had a film version. From what I remember, the movie was a flop.

There was a whole thing where someone made a fake twitter pretending to be Brianna Wu and Dobson alternatively sucked up to and debased himself whenever they implied to be unhappy with him.
I think this sort of general begging for validation from extreme feminists is why he told the girl in mourning for her dead father to "Calm Thine Tits", because she might have said something that supports 'gamergate' at some point and thus became a chance to suck up further via a random putdown in his eyes?

The fake-Brianna Wu actually continued on for awhile until he cottoned on?

I use the one from the 70s, with the demon on the cover of the GM guide.
I know they reprinted it in the 80s to make it less "evil looking" to avoid controversy with churches, I think that GM guide had a gold dragon on it? They changed a bunch of names around.

There was also another reprinting at some point with what looks like Dr. Doom on the cover.

I once summarized a character with a similar state of mind. Perhaps something in it would inspire you, it might fall under "edgy" though.

>Paladin Monk
>Only wears a helm with his holy symbol, no other armor
>Heavily tattooed with representations of all his greatest deeds, dedicated to his deity
>Sees his body and fists as the only honorable holy weapon which are to be honed to perfection though his crusade of righteousness
>Has schizophrenia which act as subconscious thoughts he perceives as instructions from his deity (which he can genuinely hear too)
>Often confuse the two voices
>While in battle he can get confused, listening to the other voice and is just as likely to dispense great punishment as he is to drift off into a fit of laughter while looking at everyone's shoes that are involved in the fight
>Truly believes he is doing the right thing when he burns down a house because he overheard the owner saying "it would be easier to just get a new home than fix this up"
>Constantly praises his deity while occasionally getting his name wrong
>Has terrible nightmares of his actions while asleep, it being the only place his subconsciousness and mind is "whole"
>Can "split" his soul from his physical form to fight spiritual beings
>Maintains consciousness and control of both at the same time
>The voices are randomly divided into each "shell", making the outcome unpredictable
>His insane voice loves to drink, because it numbs his rational voice from interfering
>Being drunk makes him go drunken-master, preferring headbutts, chest slams, shoulder jabs and palm hand fighting before fists and knees
>>
>>50759268
>"edgy"

If a God of Goodness doesn't drop his support for a guy who casually burns down other people's property there is something going wrong.

Make the imaginary friend embody an essential subconscious process, like determination or self-esteem. Or, better yet, make the imaginary friend a "mental vizier". Maybe in the form of a stuffed animal or another toy. If you go with that, it'd probably be easier to pull it off with a young woman (>25). Maybe who's on the shy, reserved side so she doesn't have a lot of friends and doesn't think very highly of herself, if the "stuffed animals as vehicles of self-esteem" theory is your jam.

Or someone important to them (like a parent or a sibling) who used to help them with their problems but died when they were fairly young so now they "talk" to them just as a way to clear their heads. It started when they were in some little crisis or another and they were just so desperate to talk it over with their dad/mom/brother/sister/friend that they started talking to them and they found that it seemed to help, so they got into the habit.

Or possibly something like Clovers from Review. Why did that segment hurt so much more than all the other terrible things that happened on that show?
>>
>>50758494
But God and Dog never talk before the end, which is the entire point of the character. Dog is feral and wants to indulge in his basic needs and God's intelligence hurts his ego and thus needs to counteract it through physical pain. God on the other hand just wants to be it's own master and live without bindings, but Dog feels more comfortable with Father Elijah and this of course makes God verily angry because of how Elijah abuses Dog (such as forcing him to stay in a cage and doing nothing about the collar in his stomach).

Fine. I'll take that.

I think more pictures are implied to have happened off-panel, it's just that more panels means Dobson would have to spend more time drawing and less time eating McDonalds and masturbating to Zero Suit Samus.

Also I just noticed the photographer is taking a picture of her butt but "your girls" typically refers to the breasts. My best guess is that the camera takes pictures of someone's front from the back, like some forgettable episode of the Twilight Zone.
>>
>>50762717
>>50762739
Well, maybe it's a cultural thing but in my country the social norm is that you ask for permission before taking any pictures.

>>

It would be really easy to add one or two speech bubbles to actually imply that.

Also, even if she stopped one guy from taking photos, she's still wearing a skimpy outfit inviting more enthusiasts. If she doesn't want any photos to be taken, she needs to get out of that outfit. Anything else is on her.

I would think that just making the imaginary friend happy, chill, and fairly reasonable without giving the character some traumatic reason for it would be fine. Maybe they're even a voice OF reason. See: Calvin and Hobbes (debates about actual existence aside)

Why do they still have them at a later age? Maybe they didn't grow out of it, or maybe they were able to reconcile the ideas of 'real and not real' along with it. Technically, there isn't anything WRONG with having an imaginary friend, because the concept in itself doesn't imply how you think about it. I mean, when you get down to it, the whole thing could be compared to having a 'character' that talks to you (so to speak) and tells you how they would react to things, which is _really_ common among writers, for instance.
>>
>>50753692
By not laying it on thick as fuck. This is seriously one of the biggest reasons you see so many cringy characters whose "wacky" antics disrupt the game and just make you want to pound the player's head into the nearest wall.

Sure, make them crazy, or weird, or suffering from trauma, or whatever. Have them mentioning their imaginary friend. Make notes or quips about it. Just as an aside thing. Don't hog the spotlight, don't let it be your character's sole defining trait, and sure as fuck don't go full retard with it.

Basically, make it non-intrusive, an intresting characteristic of your character instead of their whole personality. Making your character a onesided running gag is tiresome as fuck in general.

Also, humor goes a long way, if you don't want to be all serious about it.

>It's not really her fault
It's her provocation.
Cosplay generally is done for public effect.

>>50764054
>but she was basically asking for it!
No one is raping her or saying rape is okay.
She is wearing that costume in order to be seen in that costume. She has made that decision. That doesn't excuse people ignoring her telling them to stop taking photographs of her. But it is one of the traditional messages that says "LOOK AT ME!"
If you can't deal with people looking at your A&T, don't dress like that. That IS her fault and that IS her asking for it.
People who don't want to be objectified should not objectify themselves.

>>50765319
>By that logic, Ctrl+Alt+Del would be changing the name of comedy as we know it,
You don't quite understand logic.
The assumption that a certain trait does not make a comic bad does not mean a very well articulated version of that trait makes a comic good.
The very post you are responding to says exactly that, so I am not sure how you can make this logical mistake.

It's like saying: "cookies should have some sugar, so if I make cookies that are 95% sugar, everybody will love them."
Are you a little girl? Then I can only advice you to stick to the recipe and not try any crazy experiments with sugar.

The actual deduction to be taken from the assumption is:
If being a horrible person does not make one a bad comic artist, then Ctrl Alt Del is a bad comic for reasons completely unrelated to the fact that its author is a horrible person.

Cosplaying is in my mind the same as converting & painting miniatures or making a painting. It is a way to show appreciation to your subject matter - something that you like - or a way to show your skill as an artist/crafter to be able to make the cosplay suit. Be as racy as it is. I don't mind people looking at me in convention, it is the suit they are looking. That is fine. I'm there to enjoy the atmosphere and have fun. It is nice and fun when someone politely asks for a photo but it really makes thing feel weird if there is someone stalking behind my back taking photographs. Usually the creepiest scatter when they find out I'm male.

>>
>>50769076
Hellsing TV mirrored the swastika from what I remember.

>what conclusion would people draw [if they didn't recognize that it was an anime cosplay]?
What do you think?

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/men-nazi-uniforms-spark-fury-3565382

If they recognize you as wearing an anime cosplay, they won't react like that of course. But then they'll have to be able to tell that specific details of your uniform supersede the message sent by the general impression.
Most people won't.

See, anon, I have this really groundbreaking theory about women. You see, the thing is, women, as like the whole gender(no exceptions) might secretly be fucking dumb.

Once I realized that and stopped treating them like beings deserving of my respect my sex-life, dating-game and relationships all improved.
You should try it out too. Dont treat a woman like a human being capable of rational thought, treat her like a pet. Curb down your expectations and handle her like you would handle a cat or a dog.

Medically speaking, a person does not count as insane unless their psychological issues are actually interfering with their ability to live fulfilling lives (or threaten the lives of others).

>>50754865
If youre in a public space you have no right to photographic privacy, sure its still a dick move to take pictures of someone when they don't want it, but still within the law.
>>
>>50755884
Given what he says about the movie, I'm pretty damn sure he didn't even watch it. It's a good show--well, from my perspective, anyway--and he makes it sound like a shallow cringe comedy where the chorus of every song is just "NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER".

>>50762587
A mugging is completely different because there is an expectation of violence if you don't comply. They're usually done at knife point too so.

You kind of do.
Not really, but for example if somebody's going to publish the picture, then you can sue them.
>>
>>50771341
You're thinking of "high functioning," individuals. It's the medical phrase that means the person has an outstanding mental condition but is also fit for daily life. It doesn't mean they're not insane, it just means they're not dysfunctional. Technically you can't even diagnose anyone as "insane," anymore. I don't think the US has counted insanity as a medical condition since the early 1900s; it's a legal thing now.

Many times Schizophrenia doesn't result in voices telling you to do bad things, in some cultures people hear the voices of ancestors trying to motivate them and lead them down a good path. Doesn't mean they don't suffer from Schizophrenia, doesn't mean they aren't mentally ill, doesn't mean they aren't crazy.

You could easily just have them live by an extremely religious and moral code because god tells them to. If they come up with a good plan, solve a riddle, or manage to use diplomacy well you might want them to sometimes say "god gave me the plan/solution/told me what to say" as though they literally mean god told them with an actual voice what to do.
>>
>>50770927
Came here to post that.
>>
>>50771377
>If youre in a public space you have no right to photographic privacy
Not that anon, but where I'm from, you do.

Also, just because it's not against the law doesn't mean it's not completely inappropriate from a social standpoint. Specifically if you're taking a picture of someone's ass and catcalling on top of that, like in that comic.

And in the specific context of conventions... those are not public spaces. Are they?

What are you talking about? Thinking God or Jesus or Allah or whatthefuckever is personally talking to you will get you into deep shit with 99% of congregations of any religion.

That's GOD you're hallucinating about. Churches take that shit seriously. Joan of Arc had answer to an Inquisition and she still eventually got burned at the stake.
>>
>>50772612
Joan of Arc had answer to the Inquisition and got burned at the stake because the Catholic Church at the time was highly corrupt and many people who held sway over it wanted her campaign to fail, even people who were supposedly on her own side, but wanted someone else to take the credit for expelling England from France.
