The best character I ever played in Call of Cthulhu was an actor trying to make his way in Hollywood, but that only works if your campaign is actually in Hollywood.
A history professor with a Phd in Historiography and Theology, with 2 decades of academic study and traveling experience surrounding ancient history and religious studies, plenty of time to collect exotic weapons and artifacts and to at least grasp what he's looking at. He's gonna die anyway, but he kinda has a chance.
