The person in question hasn't been specified as either gender. How is "They" NOT appropriate to refer to them in the singular? You could always go for "He/Him," but that's more of a 19th century thing and was applied in the same way as "They" traditionally applied in the singular for a non-specific person, despite being gendered.

We got backstory on the Dark Elf. We know they've got a heart boner for The Old Royal family and what happened here has to do with that heart boner.

Just because we don't know what that reason is, doesn't mean that they're incapable of reason. It's just that their logic seems pretty fucked up. Fuck, man, we saw them talk and act in a way that implies some sort of internal logic.

And even from the perspective the crazed elf doesn't appear to be like an animal that only acts on instinct, because they articulate exactly how they view the adventurers in no uncertain terms and why they dealt with them the way they did.
