Do you enjoy the stereotypical Arabian Nights settings? Why or why not?

I don't mind it, I guess. It's something different from the somewhat generic not!Western European settings, but by the end it all depends on what you do with the setting. If it's just window dressing and nothing else, you might as well go for a standard European setting.
>>
It does feel interesting but its hard to pull off

1001 nights have some of the best fantasy stories ever, I tried using the setting of one in a campaign but people got bored before we got there.

I specifically meant the exotic "fable" atmosphere the 1001 Nights invokes, or things like, well, Prince of Persia, Aladdin etc.

Only done one short campaign, but the big thing is that everyone at the table had a basic knowledge of middle eastern history and myth, so it probably contributed to the quality of the game. We rocked the fairytale Arabia aesthetic and had a great time.

I imagine that if there was a disparity in knowledge, it would be an issue. Imagine being a scholar of Japanese history and culture, playing L5R with hardcore Weebs.

Oh, and I super highly suggest for folks to check out the Hallmark miniseries Arabian nights, for inspiration of a fantasy Arabia.
>>
Not as an entire setting, but Middle Eastern cultures are a goldmine for anthropological or cultural affectations to integrate into fantasy cultures.

Particularly, their modes of dress and conveyance are essentially a visual shorthand for "desert nomads" - as traditional Arab clothing is usually simple and practical to the climate.

Because unlike actual muslims, it's really fun and interesting.

Also Jinns and Ifrits.

Last time I tried the table blew up.

Arabian Alchemy.

You were not careful enough.

I like them as extensions of Sword and Sorcery settings, but never liked them as settings unto themselves.

I'm reading a history of the Ottoman's politics and war efforts in Southeast Asia and along the African coast.

It resembles university politics so much it hurts.

>we got this project going
>somebody quits or dies
>nobody's here to pick up the slack and finish it even though we were on the final lap. Back to square one everybody!

I mean minus people being shanked in an alley and left to perish in a pool of their own blood because finances realized that they've been cooking their books, of course.

>Southeast Asia
You mean like Vietnam and stuff? The Ottomans actually planned to go that far?
Damn son.

They sent multiple deliveries of artillery, ammunition, mercs and arrament specialists to Aceh, which is just across from Malaysia, yes. They also repeatedly tried to coordinate the war efforts against the Portugese between all muslim kingdoms in the region.

Though it seems they didn't make it all the way to Vietnam, because the Vietnamese copied chinese gunpowder technology.

Really? I never knew that. I always assumed the Ottomans after Suleiman were too busy trying not to collapse to focus on expansion, guess I was wrong.

How is that important? Despite being pretty backwards, the Ottomans were the most advanced non-Europeans around, right? Would Chinese gunpowder really be a match for post-Western reform Ottoman troops? Especially considering how handily the French, British and even Japanese dealt with them?

I don't enjoy anything stereotypical, honestly. Especially fantasy cultures. I don't expect nothing too deep and that's fine, but if it's fantasy, I will not like you reciclying skin-deep ideas about our world and call them "fantasy".

Europe only managed to gain a decisive advantage in cannons over China during the late 17th century and when it came to guns, we only really pulled ahead when we got smokeless powder down.
The Vietnamese adapted Chinese tech because they got invaded by China repeatedly and because the Ottomans certainly weren't going to hand any of their most advanced tech to non-muslims.

>Really? I never knew that. I always assumed the Ottomans after Suleiman were too busy trying not to collapse to focus on expansion, guess I was wrong.

Pretty much all of that happened during the 16th century, during his reign of the two Süleymans. The Ottomans apparently only started to withdraw from the region during the 17th, after both of them were dead and buried.

Then why didn't they just keep naming their new sultans Suleiman? It worked two times before, didn't it? The French had the right idea with naming every other king Louis, until that really horrible one at least.
