How would you feel about a Paladin being roleplayed like a hokey,

Sounds like it would make for a memorable one shot but an obnoxious long-term campaign.

As a general rule of thumb, any character whose concept starts with a funny gimmick will get old a few sessions in and everyone will hate you

You could make it work without making it too annoying. You could make a paladin who's kind of like Nalia from BG2, completely out of touch with the people he's trying to help in a way that comes off as condescending.

After all, paladins are encouraged to ignore moral complexity and have the most basic understanding of right and wrong without worrying about the consequences or implications. Paladins who think too much are paladins who fall.

You don't need the cartoonish voice, the concept works without it. Luckily the concept works outside of being a joke because really all it means is "sort of innocent with good intentions" so it doesn't always have to be a gimmick.
