This is true. The only decently executed part of the novel are the orcs themselves while the rest of it falls apart pretty badly. Even then, the attempted parallel between the orcs and the United States army didn't stick, I felt like I was reading an early story about the 40k orks more than anything.

The 'fail weapons' plot point was an interesting one though. The way they handled that specifically was neat.

The idea behind GATE is pretty good. The problem was the guy who wrote it couldn't carry it beyond his own shortcomings.

I remember reading a /tg/ made version of the story a while back that was much better, and less masturbatory, than GATE was. While we we mucking about in the other world with our advanced tech, the dark wizard who made the gate in the first place (you didn't think this happened on accident, did you?) has already infiltrated our side of the gate using invisibility, mind control, and all sorts of dark magic. By the time we even realize he is here he already has a major foothold in our world and has started experimenting with magic to take control of our technology away from us. You know that kind of magic in the disney short, the sorcerers apprentice, where the brooms are animated to sweep the floor themselves? Imagine that, cast on your guns and missiles and pointed back at you.

In defence, JSDF was fighting on their own ground and knew that enemy was coming, while both Spetsnaz and Delta was led to belie that there will be no resistance.
Bad intel/being sold out by politicians doomed them.
Still GATE is masturbatory to autistic levels.

Start held promise, crumb stomp battle at the start was expected, as medieval army can't really charge against fortified positions.
Then it goes into harem shit with gary stu protagonist and enemies are idiots that can't adjust their tactics, also allies are also useless and need rescue by said hero.
Plus no one ever used magic against JSDF. Empire have magic city within it's borders yet do not use any of wizards. That might have been interesting, how magic can change warfare but no, only wizard in show is part of MC waifu harem.

I'm fond of the way GURPS does it and how stealing from Stargate SG1 is probably the best way to do it. You can only carry as much gear as can fit in a HUMVEE (is it spelled right?) and you are going to have to survive before you can be extracted.

I just had a bizarre idea.

Imagine a setting where technology advanced humans, attempting to crack FTL, accidently into dimensional travel instead and create a portal to a fantasy realm.

They want to explore it and study it and figure out how magic works, but out of some warped version of the prime directive they don't want to reveal their advanced technology to the populace and introduce them to planes and guns and shit. If we destroy their culture and change their views of how the world works, we might destroy whatever it is about them that lets them use magic before we single out how it works.

So we send through soldiers in power armor doctored up to look like fancy knights, carrying weapons we can disguise as things that fit into their worldview. Carrying giant swords and axes with ease due to power armor, building in weapons that we can pass off as magic.

They see our soldiers as superhuman with strange abilities, but they already accept the existence of such things in the form of heroic individuals or magic dudes. Our explorers walk around in armor designed to shrug off lasers and railguns, now pitted against arrows and swords.

Now play as adventurers contracted out to the politicians of the Grand Senate who are sent in to push the agenda of a certain leader. The dwarf kingdom wants to push a bill through that gives their miners top billing for any government contracts? Hire the PCs. The Elven kingdoms are allying to make a super bloc in the Senate? Send in the PCs to sever diplomatic ties any way possible. The Orcish kingdom is trying to pass a law making orc slaves illegal? The evil human kingdom doesn't want any of that, hire the PCs.

Hell, they could even try and become Senators and get deep into the political game, Sanctuary style, the face to push the bills and the thugs to rally the voters.

Depends on the setting. Perhaps, for example, gunpowder doesn't work because the God of Fire is pissy about that sort of thing and doesn't allow it. Perhaps there is no nitrogen or oxygen, just "air". Perhaps the recipe for gunpowder happens to also be the recipe for summoning a small demon, and every time you're about to make enough it spontaneously poofs into a tiny portal to hell and a cackling imp jumps out and then you don't have any gunpoweder left. Perhaps gunpowder tastes really good to dragons and they can smell it from miles away and are smart enough to wait until you're asleep before sneaking in to root through your bags like a bunch of scaly campground bears.

Maybe there is a source of mercury 150 miles from here. You think that's not that far away. The fantasy landers you are talking to, however, basically think of that as the other side of the world.

As for saltpeter, to make that you are going to need bat shit. If you don't have a cave of bats in your area, you are going to have a dick of a time. Because then you have to find very specific forms of rock and known how to extract what you need out of it, and then neutralize all the other compounds except the potassium nitrate.

So now your gang of soldiers needs to have a geologist and a chemist just to acquire the ingredients, much less know how to put them together in order to make usable gunpowder and not something that will turn your gun into a grenade.

And no books or wikipedia, you didn't know you were going to need this information until it was already too late to go back for it.

GATE is bad for three big reasons

It's actual propaganda to get otaku to join the defense force (this isn't a joke that's why it's there) and it comes off as super weird to read it. It's not just wank it has a certain level of unsavory in a way I can't describe.

you could have the players stumble across a large cache of joy, embroil them in some sort of turf war where one of them will inevitably have to use some of the product, and have them struggle with the addiction

then slowly introduce the mutants, have them find small caches of joy around after the difficult Joy Mutant boss fights, have them slowly realize what Joy does to people
