What books should I read to become well-acquainted with the Forgotten Realms? I'd like to be accurate and up to date on all of the major happenings in Faerun.

Yes, but only with a very broad overview for Faerun. Like the title says, it focuses on the Sword Coast, so if you want more detail you have to go to the 2E or Grey Box sets.

I could just make shit happen that stops the party from leaving the sword coast, kek.

Ed Greenwood has a setting book, and i've heard its good and pretty.
Cleric Quintet is cool and is a good reference for clerical stuff.
Drizzt stuff is certainly an easy resource, but limited in scope, good Drow and far north info.

This is it. It's definitely pretty, but it's written by Ed Greenwood, so it focuses on the fine details rather than the big picture. It'll tell you recent trends in restaurants in Waterdeep and the standard protocol for what to do if adventurers come to your farm and ask to spend the night, but it won't tell you how any particular nation is doing or what the current threats to the Realms are.
