Related. My personal theory about what happened to one of the missing Primarchs is that he landed on a xenos planet (a completely new, pretty basic race). I like to imagine that the female primarchs would grow to be alternate aspects of their brothers. You know what, even with all this new fluff from the HH Series, this is just plain stupid. The Emperor travels all the way through space to make a bargain with the Chaosgods and create the Primarchs, and decides that after about 200 years he'll just throw them away. His mightiest generals, those who will not only lead his armies, but have specially tailored abilities that can help mankind overcome everything the galaxy might throw at them...and he's just like "Nah, pretty sure I won't need them anymore."? That's downright stupid, and sounds like nothing but a poorly thought out plot device to go for "Muh evuhl Emperor, Chaos did nothing wrong, we just misunderstood"

Be glad you haven't seen LG's revalations that the Emperor wanted Horus to Rebel so he could then get rid of the Primarchs and Legions, and that ther Emperor wanted the Heresy after all. But Magnus ruined everything by destrying the Webway gate.

Now that is just aggressively stupid.
I could buy into the Emperor wanting the Heresy to happen so he can ascend to godhood (somehow, without getting bound to the Golden Throne), so he can protect humanity from Chaos forever (Cegorach does it, and if the Laughing God can do it, the Emperor sure could too). Although even that wouldn'T exactly require Primarchs and Space Marines.
But him creating special forces and the mightiest and best humans to ever walk the earth, unmatched peers in their special niche and made with the abilities to bring back humanity to a glorious golden age (And without making past mistakes again) makes sense. The Chaosgods not wanting this also makes sense. With them influencing Horus there's a reasonable motivation behind the whole heresy.
The Emperor just building up such a mighty army and creating the Primarchs and then, after he's done with all his stuff, just throwing them away makes no sense whatsoever. Not to mention, that it goes against all established fluff.
