WotC has given you one job:
You must choose two of D&D's six ability scores to cut/consolidate into the other four.
Which two ability scores have to go?
Wisdom and constitution, place all necessary rolls in intelligence and strength respectively. Still conveys the basic ideas of the traits and allows for similar builds to remain.
>>50413228
Constitution and Strength should be one ability, and Intelligence and Wisdom should be one ability.
>>50413228
Int and Wis are a no brainer, combine them into "Mental" or something similar, and combine Str and Dex into a "Physical" stat.
>>50413257
>>50413264
>>50413297
Wis + Int seems like it would cover way, way too much stuff unless you add another stat or shift a lot of stuff over to Charisma.
>>50413257
I'd rather call them Might and Wisdom, myself.
>>50413228
Charisma and Wisdom. That being said, I'd prefer the entire ability score system to be revamped, especially because Dexterity currently covers far too wide an array of dissimilar tasks.
>>50413320
That's the problem, there's 6 stats for a reason. Everything has its function, and removing one changes everything.
>>50413320
you only say that because you think the stats are supposed to be personality descriptors rather than mere limits on ability.
A "low wis, high int" wizard is a role play matter, their abilities and mental capabilities (rather than what they choose to apply) should be the same as a "high wis, low int" cleric.
>>50413228
I actually already drop Con and Wis as useless.
Str kills Con and takes its stuff; and Wis gets all of its "perception"-related functions folded into Int and its "willpower/faith"-related functions into Cha.
>>50413228
>You must choose two of D&D's six ability scores to cut/consolidate into the other four.
All of them, but mechanically - Intelligence and Constitution.
Rename the other stats to Vigor, Grace, Wits and Style.
Vigor is for physically strenuous actions (Strength/Constitution).
Grace is for quick and delicate actions (Agility/Dexterity).
Wits is for perception and reaction (Perception/Reaction, duh).
Style is for social interactions and artistic display (Charisma/Willpower).
>>50413228
I go one step further and consolidate three of them.
Str+Con becomes: POWER
Int+Dex Become: FINESSE
Wis+Cha Become: SPIRIT.
Honestly, with how 4e worked, I kind of wish they just had Power/Finesse/Spirit from the get-go.
>>50413228
Drop Charisma and replace Wisdom and Intelligence with Perception. Mental tasks can be based on a character's background or directly on what a player says and does for his character.
Alternately, combine Strength and Constitution into Might, and combine Wisdom and Charisma into Spirit. Of course, you'd have to tweak what these stats do--particularly Might--to keep them from being overpowered (a good first step for might seems like it would be to transfer melee to-hit over to Dexterity).
If you insist on keeping 4 of the stats as-is, names and all, then either drop Charisma and subsume Wisdom into Intelligence, or subsume Strength into Constitution and Charisma into Wisdom.
>>50413228
I maintain that any reduction beyond the 6 should reduce to three : Muscle, IQ, and Will
With skills
Fast Twitch, Slow Twitch, Constituition
Memory, Dynamic, Abstract
Id, Ego, Superego
And then Knowledge on top of that.
>>50413228
Strength+Constitution. Since Muscle-Mass can relate both to strength of body and actual ability to move shit, this is a no-brainer.
Wisdom+Intelligence. This really fucks shit up, as it gives all mental stats under one tree. But whatever, seeing as this is the only one that makes easy sense. Not to mention Wisdom is kind of a useless stat.
>>50414803
A four stat system allows for balanced attack and defense roles on the physical and mental axis, so you can use Strength as both your physical damage stat and your physical toughness stat, while whatever eats the Will Save part of Wisdom (I like Charisma for this, personally) can be your mental toughness and damage stat.
If you drop to four, you can have stat specialists and stat generalists innately generate combat roles based on what stats they focus on.
>>50413228
Body = (pick a better name) = Str + 70% of Dex + Con + Fort
Dex = Rest of Dex, roll in some speed stats + Init + Reflex
Mind = Int + Wis.
Will/Soul = 50% of the stats used with Cha + Will saves
Social = Other %50 of Cha, social, scare, bluff, feints, and style
Might name Dex as Wits and include Perception/Reaction. Previous anon has a good idea.
