I'm fairly new to trying to understand TES lore, so excuse if I'm talking absolute shite. Anyway, I've read that Landfall is when the Numidium will return to destroy Nirn. Is this still "canon"? Considering how Skyrim is set in the 4th Era, and Landfall is supposed to happen in the 5th, will Bethesda completely ignore it and do a Dr. Who ala change background lore (such as the number of regenerations a Doctor can have) and change it so Landfall can be avoided. I can't see Bethesda going full steam ahead to Landfall.
>>
>>50389584
Not really canon so much as the premise of C0da, which while not technically canon was written by one of the developers.
>>
>>50389584
>will Bethesda
My dad works for Bethesda and he says yes.
How would any of us know? Or, more importantly, why would the main games ever need to mention it?
Consider c0da to be whatever you want it to be. There's no reason for the game series to ever acknowledge it. I don't care about canonicity, others do, and you get to decide how you feel about it.
People like to argue, and hence make a much larger issue out of this than it really is.

I really want expanded magic and racial bonuses for the next TES. Give Nords a boost to frost magic so I can play cool cryomancers.

The former. It's a complication of the sources.

There is no fanmade content on the main portions of the site. There are developer texts, and content with developer participation, such as the Trial.

You can find the Trial in other places too, by the way. Just not on the UESP.

Someone posted their detailed reasoning for Acrobatics getting progressively weaker in games after Morrowind. I believe it was tied to the events of House Redoran and Red Year. Could something similar have happened to explain why magic sucks in Skyrim?
>>
>>50392038
that was a joke about House Redoran valuing 'gravity', not actual lore.

magic sucks in skyrim because Nords are tremendously magophobic and their college is a collapsing shithole situated next to a fully-collapsed shithole.
>>
>>50392038
I think some people connect it to destruction of the Heart of Lorkhan in Morrowind.

You mean you don't know? The specialized destruction mages only come in certain races.

Many Cryomancers are Nords, but none are Dunmer. Many Pyromancers are Dunmer but none are Nords.

Interestingly, Bretons, Imperials and Altmer can be all of the above, and only Bretons and Altmer can be Archmages.

http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Fire_Mage
http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Ice_Mage
>>
>>50395774
Adding on to this, Altmer are twice as likely to be shock mages, Nords twice as much to be Frost, Dunmer twice as much to be Fire, and Bretons twice as much likely to be Necromancers.

Those are the different types of warlocks/witches you encounter. Bretons are more likely to use Conjuration, which makes sense considering they get the biggest bonus to it.

I'd start by showing the colovian/nibenese cultural divide in-game, in both the visuals and the story. The nibenese would have more of a traditional roman aesthetic but upgraded to the early/high middle ages. Colovians on the other hand would look more eastern (as in slavic) but with a clear roman base.

>>50399347
I see that a lot on Reddit, to the point to where I even think it's a bit of a meme that Breton = Casual.
Really, I don't even think they're that boring, just not strange. The concept of magical druidy warlock humans with elven blood is pretty interesting, along with the concept of a race descended from slaves who, presumably, resist magic because their master used magic are all really creative.
The thing you get in-game is more "French guys who cook great and do magic good too and also Belethor." and what people get from that is "Generic human, boring england, I hate it shortest race worst stealth archers." or "I like playing them."
>>
>>50399428
Huh, any particular reason for Slavic? I admit, I have a fondness for the Byzantines.

After someone tried their hardest to convince me that Bretons were pathetic and smaller than Bosmer and Nords were the Master Race, I lost a little bit of faith in how casuals view lore. It almost makes me ashamed that I was once a Nordfag who got upset at the prospect that Hjalti was a Breton.

Nibeneans for the most part Hellenistic-Byzantine and Colovians a throw up between Romans and the Germanic cultures that succeeded them. Though this is just a generalization. I honestly hate citing definite inspiration.
If I were actually given free rein to design Cyrodiilic culture I would steal little bits and pieces from all sorts of cultures and even other fantasy settings, and then I would add on my own shit because it's fucking fantasy.

>Nibenese
>Traditional Roman

>By contrast, the Eastern people of Cyrodiil relish in garish costumes, bizarre tapestries, tattoos, brandings, and elaborate ceremony. Closer to the wellspring of civilization, they are more given to philosophy and the evolution of ancient traditions. The Nibenese find the numinous in everything around them, and their different cults are too numerous to mention (the most famous are the Cult of the Ancestor-Moth, the Cult of Heroes, the Cult of Tiber Septim, and the Cult of Emperor Zero). To the Colovians, the ancestor worship and esoteric customs of the East can often be bizarre. Akaviri dragon-motifs are found in all quarters, from the high minaret bridges of the Imperial City to the paper hako skiffs that villagers use to wing their dead down the rivers. Thousands of workers ply the rice fields after the floodings, or clear the foliage of the surrounding jungle in the alternate seasons. Above them are the merchant-nobility, the temple priests and cult leaders, and the age-old aristocracy of the battlemages. The Emperor watches over them all from the towers of the Imperial City, as dragons circle overhead.

That would be sort of like saying that black slaves were cucked by white slave owners. It wasn't something that happened way too much, and it wasn't really cuckolding so much as fucking, not normally with consent due to slavery, a house slave (normally female) because the spouse wouldn't fuck you or for the even more deranged, just a form of domination.
Funny enough, most American blacks have somewhere around 20% white genes, varying from region to region. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that it's similar for Bretons.

I really like that there's such a thing as in-universe fiction and stories, and that you can actually read them. Makes the world feel alive.

An unfortunate trend in a lot of settings, be it vidya or published setting books for rpg systems, is that you'll learn a lot about setting in a strictly historical and referential manner. They talk about history and society, but not about the stories the inhabitants of that society tell each other. At most, you'll get a referential mention "In year 2941, Yugtlop the Mad Poet wrote a scathing play about Marquis Ynugger of Ingulstad, leading to a persecution of writers and artists".
In TES, you can actually straight up read plays, stories both religious and cultural, and historical fiction.

>>50405736
Might be we have some newfriends. The tone's been a bit different recently.
>>
>>50405731
being unrelated to a series means they are fucking disconnected dude.
It means that nothing that happens in ESO is going to have an effect on the main series, or in other words none of ESO's lore is going to have any consequence in the main series and is therefore non-canonical.
The fact that they share a similar setting is the exact reason why Pete Hines needed to make this statement that they are not actually related so that people know they are not actually fucking related.
The only reason why Zenimax even claims ESO is canon to the series is so that they can get more fans of the series to play the game.
>>
>>50405784

>>

No, I'm sure there are people who honestly believe eso is canon, and there are people who honestly believe eso is not canon.
But acting like this isn't productive to anything. As of right now, I prefer my lore to be from noneso sources. But things that the main series hasn't touched on, like DOP 9497.15, an eso source is of course valid there.

The fact that the information exists within an official Zenimax owned and developed game means that it's canon, like it or not.

That's what makes it canon. Not just by virtue of existing.

I'm not listening because you are, factually, incorrect. This has nothing to do with conflicting opinions and does not end on "agree to disagree."

You are wrong.

Depends. The thing that all magic has in common is that it requires intellect to learn and comprehend, and willpower to influence reality, focus, and maintain the spell. Different forms of magic have some difference in how they work, for example Mysticism.
>Mysticism seems to derive power from its conundrums and paradoxes; the act of experimentation, no matter how objectively implemented, can influence magicka by its very existence. Therefore the Mystic mage must consign himself to finding dependable patterns within a roiling imbroglio of energy. In the time it takes him to devise an enchantment with a consistent trigger and result, his peers in the other schools may have researched and documented dozens of new spells and effects.

Alteration is more about imagination and using will to cement the un-reality you want.
>But the spells of Alteration are all about uncommon sense. The infinite possibilities, breaking the sky, swallowing space, dancing with time, setting ice on fire, believing that the unreal may become real. You must learn the rules of the cosmos and then break them.
>To master Alteration, first accept that reality is a falsehood. There is no such thing. Our reality is a perception of greater forces impressed upon us for their amusement. Some say that these forces are the gods, other that they are something beyond the gods. For the wizard, it doesn't really matter. What matters is the appeal couched in a manner that cannot be denied. It must be insistent without being insulting.
>To cast Alteration spells is to convince a greater power that it will be easier to change reality as requested than to leave it alone. Do not assume that these forces are sentient. Our best guess is that they are like wind and water. Persistent but not thoughtful. Just like directing the wind or water, diversions are easier than outright resistance. Express the spell as a subtle change and it is more likely to be successful.

What are you talking about? Does someone in Skyrim say something about marriage in the temple of Mara being a new tradition?

Without knowing the source, I'd guess it's talking about Skyrim having been Imperialized to the point where they've adopted Imperial marriage customs, which differ greatly from the more complicated nature of traditional Nordic marriage.

If the story of Shor is anything to go by, you have War-Wives, Bed-Wives and Tear-Wives.
>After her husband Shor had forgotten to kiss her, a tradition among the War-Married when they returned from the field together, Kyne kept her storms to herself and knew there would be no true understanding until the twilight was lifted.
>Dibella ... Bed-Wife of Shor
>Kyne knew Mara was no doubt making treaties with one of the other chieftains, and the Pact still allowed for Tear-Wives to do that

The three roles above were likely not JUST metaphysical and religious, but also probably existed as some sort of institution in ancient Nordic culture.

If we get into the Five Hounded Companions, we have mentions of:
>Wine-Wives (essentially somewhere between a "official mistress" and a prostitute)
>Book-Wife (married to a Clever Man, likely the female equivalent of one)
>Sky-Wife (a female Tongue)
>Succor-Wife (the one example is married to a scarred man, so something like a wife to comfort someone who's been through a lot)
>Witch-Wife (a female mage, presumably)
>Shield-Wife (warrior wife, one would assume)

>Hearth-Wife (wife in charge of the household, presumably for Boat-Thanes and others who are away from home to fight)
>Autumn-Wife
>Totem-Wife (there's a "Totem-Wife Fair", so it's likely a religious position, like a priestess)
>Suffer-Wife
>Whittling-Wife (a unique form of marriage, apparently)
>Kyne-Wife (priestess? Tongue? both?)
>Wind-Wife (navigator, maybe?)

It's pretty clear that there were many different kinds of marriage in ancient Nordic culture. In the list of the Five Hounded Companions (or so), there's even reference to there being "types of marriage". It's important to note that the trend seems to be that multiple marriages are seemingly not that common, and mostly a thing for chieftains/thanes/men of importance (though it may be that "lesser" wives are not mentioned, either way polymarriage is present but seemingly not the norm). Both of these texts very rarely just use the word "wife" alone, it's almost always X-Wife.
Ysgramor's son(s) have multiple Tear-Wives, Wine-Wives, Heart-Wives, Kyne-Wives and Shield-Wives, and the retinue included several unmarried Thunder Shield Women.

Ancient Nords (especially the ruling class) had a very different conception of family.

I totally forgot that we have the "Dov names" of everyone in Ysgramor's (Ysmaalithax') retinue (which in and of itself is super interesting), and casts a bit of light on a few of the roles. It's not that important, but let's mention it anyway.

>[(Grit-Prince Tstunal) Tsunaltir and Stuhnalmir's) Wives] - [Tsuunalinfaxtir and St’unuhaslifafnal's Jills]
I hope this formatting makes any sort of sense to the rest of you.

>[Tear-Wives] - [Tear-Jills]
No real difference, though translating Tusk Widow (Nord) to Dewclaw Widow (Dov) is sort of interesting.

>[Wine-Wives] - [Void-Jills]
Wine-Wives are commonly called "X-Casket" or "Casket-X", but the Dov names seem to translate it to Fire. Hate-Basket and Half-Casket become Hate-Fire and Half-Fire, while "Ingridal who lost her casket at the burning" becomes "Ingridaaligu who lost her minutes in the mending".

>[Hearth-Wives] - [Earth-Jills]
Less "home-wife", more "earthly-wife", but the concept seems consistent.

>[Kyne-Wives] - [Aether-Jills]
Trying to interpret this is going to be speculative, but what's striking is how Aether-Jills appears to be quite the opposite of a Earth-Jill, perhaps because their domain is the divine. Which makes me want to read Kyne-Wife as more of a religious position.

>[Shield-Wives] - [Magne-Jills]
I honestly wish I could decide what to make of this particular connection. Meridia's relationship to Lorkhan springs to mind.

And as a neat sidenote, "Hans the Fox" = "Pelinaalilargus the Pragmatist".

Just to jump off of that, from the PGE2 we have what appear to be the names of Jills.

Since I'm on the topic, and I've got nothing better to do, a few observations regarding the Nordic version of Ysgramor's retinue and the (possibly dracochrysalised?) Dov version.

>Nord - Dov
>Ysgramor - (Boat-Thane) Ysmaalithax the Northerly Dragon
>Tusk Widow Who Foreswore Her Name - Dewclaw Widow Who Foreswore Her Name
>Ingridal who lost her casket at the burning - Ingridaaligu who lost her minutes in the mending
>Shanjenen the Echo-Eaten - Shanu’ujeneen the Star-Woven
>Thunder Shield Women (related to Kyne) - Thunder-Scaled Jills (related to Ald'uin)
>Oracle-Aunts - Oracle-Oocytes
>Kjhelt of the Cult of Orkey - Kuujhe’elthilax of the Kalpa of the Orsidoon (!)
>Ingridal who used her wine casket as a drum - Ingriidarligar who used her tailclaw as a song
>Anshalf whose gigantic shield was stripped from a karstaag-man - Ansahaalifar whose gigantic feathered-crown was stripped from a Dawn Goddess that was eaten before she could fully congeal
>Khela and Akhela who traded shields daily out of some geas - Khelsadaalix and Akheelaalix who traded heads daily out of some geas
>Mem-yet Chemua who held secret shield-songs “unneeded yet” - Mehemeem’yetthex Aththoommua who held secret syllables “unneeded yet”
>Totem-Uncles - Shed-Uncles
>Torc-Nephews - Clutch-Nephews ["torc-bearer" becomes "decendant"] ["gregarious and warm" becomes "expressive and endless"]

The whole Atmorans = Dragons thing, when combined with Atmorans = Karstaag (maybe?)/Giants and Atmorans = Ehlnofey and then the whole "Atmora frozen in time" plus "The Return as the end of the last kalpa (a la the Yokudan warrior wave or even Aldmeris)" leads to some weird implications.

The whole idea behind (Breto)Nordic skaldic tradition where they just make stuff up to embellish the story, like the 500 Companions, where apparently every notable figure in Tamrielic history was there, seems like it mirrors what is glimpsed at during Dragon Breaks: the Dawn Time, when everything happened at once.

Or, basically, what this puts way better: https://www.imperial-library.info/content/nords-lack-creation-myth

Last post on the topic (I promise), but I forgot another thing, and that's husbands. The other half of a marriage.

There's a few scarce mentions of various husband types as well, in the retinue of Rebec the Red.
>Rebec’s Hearth-Husband Jjauf
>Pity-Husbands Korl-jkorl, Heimgrud the Laughing Lake, Njimal, Bjimal Njimalson, and Thalld the Hobbler
>Shield-Husband Valomar of the Daggershout
As with most other cases, the reason for her large multitude of husbands is probably at least in part because of her stature, seeing as she was a Boat-Thane important enough to lead Ysgramor's vanguard for a time with her longboat.

There's some obvious issues one can find with taking all of this at face value, but the text is not without its insights, and you could probably say that even if some of these marriage types turn out to be more legendary or mythical than actually a cultural practice at some time, the Nords certainly seem to believe that this all happened. And if we can't have truth (whatever that is), having what people believe happened has to be the next best thing.

I wouldn't read the last part of the list of the Five Hounded Companions as a general implication that Atmorans are Dragons. I think it has more to do with Ysgramor (and those in his sphere).

I mean, Ysgramor was a dragon in some sense. By that I don't mean that he was a huge flying lizard, but that he was a dragon by virtue of action and belief. In Kuhlmann's words (or MK, I forget), dragons are "biological time machines powered by ideologies", and whatever being Ysgramor was, it fell into that category somehow.
"Shor did shake his scaled mane" and all that, plus it's awfully convenient that Atmora froze in time as Ysgramor, the Northern Dragon, possible Aspect of Time-God left for Tamriel.
So Ysgramor can be both a man, a Nordic culture hero associated with Shor, and Ysmaalithax the Northerly Dragon (which makes me think of Ysmir), Boat-Thane to the World-Eater. Even barring the strictly metaphysical approach, we can be pretend to be Hasphat Antabolis and draw connections between Ysgramor the man/hero and the Dragon Cult. It just fits on so many levels.
>>
>>50413919
There's a quote by MK about that, actually:

>Can you hear me? In the back?
>Can you hear us? In the back?
>Ysgramor was a Dragon.
>YS GRA MOR

Which, exactly as you mentioned, was met with this response by The Hasphat:
>If Ysgramor was indeed a "dragon", most likely he was a Dragon Priest - in the Late Merethic Era, it would be unlikely for a leader of Ysgramor's reported stature to be unconnected to the Dragon Cult. But connecting the Nord hero Ysgramor with the now-reviled Dragon Cult is of course anathema to those who favor chauvinism over historical truth.

Conversations in Oblivion strongly implied that Nords, (at least in the Third Age, and in and around the Jerral Mountains,) basically just shacked up with each other, and that marriage was something the Cyrodils brought in when they built the chapels.

Who knows?
Might be Liz Grah Moro, which is Ice Battle Glory, but I don't feels sure about that. Or it even being an actual Dov name.
Alternatively, if we say it's not a traditional Dov name, Mor might be Mora (Forest), which seems appropriate.

Going out on a limb and trying Ehlnofex, it might be that Ys Gra Mor is a corruption of [UNKNOWN] Ghartok Mora (Something Hand Forest), but that's getting pretty speculative.

Gra reminds me of "Gravuloi" in Falmeris (meaning "Enemy") and "Gravia" in Ayleidoon (meaning "Ugly").

But I'm just throwing suggestions out there. It may also just be that MK didn't intend it to mean anything in particular, he's done that before.
