Awesome. You get some great wargames playable on Vassal that you don't really have space for.
>Is it better wors worse than Roll20?
Dunno, don't use roll 20
>What's the community like?
At least in my experience, there isn't really a "Vassal" community. There's communities for this, that, and the other game, which people play on Vassal, but there's not a lot of connection between the guys who play Game of Thrones and the guys who play World in Flames, or something.

As far as I can tell, it's apples and oranges. Vassal is for boardgames and doesn't really have a Roleplay setting like Roll20. Rolll20 is the same, but in reverse.

Or the money for, or the time to paint the minis

When people talks about the roll20 community they refer to the kind of users that will pop up if you make an open call for players
What kind of people do you find in vassal if you don't play with friends?

Generally, I've found pretty good matches, but let me give the caveat that I tend to play massive, hundred hour long hex and chit games. That tends to have a sorting effect; you don't get flighty people who want to play World in Flames or the like.

maybe the games you play get you better people, the comminuties for larger games like 40k must be different
