Post character backstories and have others critique it.

Nothing is more dreary than a bad backstory. Hopefully we can become more original through this.

Samurai in a western-styled setting. He was made a ronin after he refused to take part in a massacre of a village, kicked his daimyo in the dick, caused enough of a distraction to let the villagers escape, then kicked his daimyo in the dick again.

As soon as he managed to escape to the West, he marveled at the free exchange of ideas, the relative racial harmony, and the fact that steel wasn't worth its weight in gold. The first thing he did was lend his armor and sword to a museum, and the second was getting some proper halfplate, a musket, and two longswords.

He's a bit immature, but enthusiastic and has a strong moral compass.

Many moons ago, young Bircham stepped on a toy brick. Realizing that man and all that he made was an abomination in the face of the natural world, he fled to the forest. Raised by the fairies, he grew in the ways of magic and nature's lore. Eventually he grew dissatisfied with the peaceful ways of the fairies, and saw that they themselves were weak and shallow representations of a false interpretation of the natural order. Stealing their souls, he became something more than a man. A terrifying new creature. He dubbed his new form that of "Fey" and sought to reclaim the world.

Kid growing up poor in Los Angeles, looking at the bright lights of Hollywood and thinking "some day, some day". Does the work, busts his hump working shitty jobs to pay for performing arts college, stunt training, even weapons training for action roles. Starts low on the totem pole with bit parts, paying his due. Stays low. Tries not to be "that guy" saying it's because he's an ethnic minority or because he's openly gay and just be happy to be working in movies, even if they're Lance Henriksen tier horror sequels. Tries to be judged on his own damn merits as a performer. Even if ninety percent of his filmography is "black guy that dies first in the horror/sci fi movie".

Then the world up and fucking ends on him. He was up in the hills working on Wendigo Bloodlust 2: Bigfoot's Revenge and getting used to being the first guy to die in every fictional survival situation that being placed in a real one makes him... not okay with this shit. The zombies are coming and he doesn't keep together entirely well. He does things he's not proud of, but he survives. He gets his spouse and his friend shored up in a lodge, but to make that happen he definitely lets other people be the first to die this time.

Other survivors from the film crew and the like cluster together and they manage to form an enclave, get shit working long-term. The fences are good. He likes the fences. Having the dead on the other side. He works day in day out on that fence, popping skulls until it becomes second nature. Eventually the numbers dwindle, the fence crew don't get as much of the rations any more because they're not as vital, and because now it's mostly the slow, dumb zombies instead of the sprinting blood-puking vectors that can scale walls like fucking Spiderman. So he forms up into a Taking crew with some of his friends to go out and see what's left of the world..

Average village kid with an affinity for stories and songs, becomes a bard studying lore in a relatively low magic setting. Gets drafted to fight in a war, but there's a problem: he's a huge coward. But, he doesn't want anyone to know that; society tends to favor the brave and strong, and he'll be damned if he misses out on some opportunities because he knows his limits.

Through a series of extremely good luck, smooth talking, and magic that he doesn't know he's casting, he moves up through the military ranks and becomes a well-known war hero.

At which point he decides, "Screw this, I'm out." The more commendations for battle he gets, the more they throw him into it, and he wants no part in that. He abandons his hometown, including his family, friends, childhood friend/romantic interest, and a handful of people that know he's a coward.

This was the original backstory for my first character, ended up completely dropping it once it was obvious the campaign was pretty light hearted, but I've always wondered how it stacks up. Is it half way decent or just edgy crap, I guess that's up to /tg/ to decide.

Born in a very rural farming village, to two average every day peasants. Has a strange patterned birth mark on his back but they don't really take notice of it for they are just happy to have a son. For a while life is more or less normal, he makes friends more easily than most and is liked by most of the adults. His father is a strict man concerned with propriety, while his mother dotes on him to the point of coddling. However as the boy hit's puberty strange things start happening, flashing lights, things falling off shelves when no one was in the room, small fires starting. At first they believe an evil spirit is haunting them, but after a while it becomes clear these events only happen when they boy is around, eventually the father put two and to together. Rumors start flying around the village, "they say their boy is possessed by a spirit", "I heard his wife lay with a demon and that is the spawn", "I heard when he was born he had a curse marked on his flesh".

1/2
>>
>>50358041
Of course the boy's parents denied these rumors aggressively, but as time went on his father began to break down, first it wasn't too bad, a bit of drink and some stifled tears when no one was looking. But as time dragged on and things only became worse a few drinks turned to a few dozen, and then turned to screaming and throwing objects. Then apologies spoken in the morning, muffled through the barred front door. The boy protected his mother from the worst of his father's rages whenever he could, and she would apologize in his father's place. This became life as normal for a long while, till one day near the boy's sixteenth birthday an epidemic struck the village, it mostly killed the young, infirm and elderly, but it also took the boy's mother. Shortly thereafter with no reason to stay any longer he packed his paltry few possessions and some rations and left without saying a word of goodbye. Being the impulsive type he didn't really have a plan, except that he set off in the direction of the nearest city, with three goals in mind, find out what he was, find his 'real' father, and finally to live his life standing on his own two feet.

Kind of cliched I guess, but I'm about as creative as a doornail so I was happy with it.

Some elements might be toned down due to silliness.

You'd be surprised how hard one fuck-up can change a man.

There was once a bard, free of worry. The regular, immortal-minded young man, foolish and haughty. He did as many bards do, taking the carnal pleasure as it came, every chance it came.

Then, he met her.

A humbling experience is not always about witnessing or experiencing suffering, you see. Sometimes it might just be realizing how close you were to dying at a time you didn't yourself realize it. The scariest thing though? It started in a way that didn't surprise himself at all.

After partying during a festival, he woke up in a dingy room of an inn. Remembering nothing from the night before, he lay next to a beautiful lady, nothing new to him yet. But his gut said something was wrong.

After assessing this age-old and familiar situation again, he noticed, to his horror, that not only were there a foreign object in his rectum, his companion looked less and less human by the minute.

This bard, nothing to his name, somehow managed to lay a succubus, but didn't seem to have lost his soul.

After lodging the foreign object out, he realized it was a masterwork, possiblt magical flute. Whether this piece contributed to his survival was still unknown.

He escaped silently from the room, the inn, the city, hoping to never see that horrifying creature again.

But as all stories go, he did.

After that, it seemed every time he was plastered or lusty, the succubus followed. And every time, the bard ran like hell.

After a time, he became zealous of not drinking and not submitting to carnal pleasure. Almost more so than a paladin.

She still follows, but out of fear of death he can't be bothered to know why.

So that's the story of bard nothing-to-his-name, whose only accomplishment is banging a succubus and not losing his soul. He pays for that mistake every waking hour of his life.

Within the border worlds of the Imperium of Man near the Damocles Gulf, stories circulate of monstrous avian-like alien creatures emerging at night lusting for human blood. The birds of prey of Rra’sho have earned a fearsome reputation of savagery and banditry. Operating from their Kroot Warspheres, deep in space, and wearing intimidating masks and idols of war, the nomadic Jagged Crowns go from planet to planet collecting trophies and booty.

B’reel is one them. Long before he was born, his kindred on his Warsphere had already raided over a dozen worlds to fund their hunts. B’reel and his band of marauders have continued this tradition. Face-scarred by battle and ritual, he’s an excellent tracker and a vicious guerrilla fighter, veteran of countless raids over the hapless settlements of the Imperium. Water Caste Intelligence took notice of his talents and asked for his services to work with the Iron Fan Cadre. On Prefectia, B’reel would not only prove his worth to the caste but also showed his propensity for cunning. He toyed with the garrisons on planet, refusing to fight, slipping away, luring them into Mocking Wind’s sights.

A long time ago, a proud warrior worked as a mercenary to support his wife and daughter. One day an injured stranger appeared on his doorstep and asked for shelter. He turned the stranger away because he feared the local xenophobic order of paladins would catch him and endanger his family.

Days pass, and a knock is heard at the door. A group of armored men break down the door. It is the order of xenophobic paladins, who were tracking the injured stranger and knew he had come to the warrior's house. Despite having committed no crime, the paladins slaughter his family before his eyes, then run him through with a sword.

An undetermined amount of time passes. The warrior wakes up in a freshly dug grave. Somehow he has survived his execution, but is scarred and disfigured, and has no memory of his former life. It is raining and the mound of earth covering him is soft. He digs his way out and exits the graveyard, again finding work as a mercenary, this time working against the xenophobic order.

Day by day, memories of his previous life return to him, and his hatred of the xenophobic order grows. By the time he meets the rest of the party, he is consumed by a desire for vengeance.

He believes that the death of his family was punishment for his failure to help the injured stranger, and blames himself for not being strong enough to save them. Because of this he possesses a strong might makes right philosophy, but wants to protect the weak as well.

Overall he acts cold and disinterested, but mention his family and he'll go absolutely berserk. He also really HATES members of the xenophobic order that killed his family.

Made a character for a Level 5 D&D5 games so he had some XP under his belt. This is his story:

Grandson Rheince was an eccentric man to say the least. He was a small time thief with hands so fast they were said to be invisible - just worried his way up the ladder in the thieves guild until they gave him a desk job. He got bored but kept a side thing going with the guild's blessing... until he took a watch from the wrong guy. It took three dead guards and a scared shitless noble to figure out that the guild had promised this man protection for a hefty sum that he'd placed as a bounty on Granderson's head. He fled to another continent to escape his fate.

But life on Nicossyus was no easier as an unknown middle aged man (43, old in some societies) until he settled in Quasan and opened a bar with the proceeds of his old life. One day, a spy told him about a potentially lucrative gig that required a thief with a modicum of skill that wouldn't mind getting dirty. The pay was amazing, maybe enough to offer the guild to stop sending him assassins monthly. He just needed to survive.

>Driven out from his home village at young age due to his fathers twice-cursed blood, the tiefling got taken in by a traveling alchemist. There in the old gnome's cart he grew up and learned the way of alchemy and ways to suppress his inherited lycantropy. But one day the potion that meant keep him unconcious failed tragically and he woke inbetween the shattered remnants of the cart and the half eaten corpse of foster-father. Consumed by grief he swore to find a way to either get rid of the curse or control it. In the years to come he traveled the land, always researching and shunned by the church. One day though he couldn't bear the persecution by an inquisitor any longer and tried to fight back. Now he is in chains, on the way to be executed.

Keepin this short and concise because nobody like linguistic masturbation.

Retired town guard, lost his wife and child in a fire when he was younger- while patrolling and away from home. Is long in the tooth and has a bad knee from his years of duty giving him a penalty to his DEX and taking those points and putting it into WIS. Personality is like a character from a "renegade cop novella" doing what has to be done - even if its somewhat illegal to get the badguy and save the innocent. Single weapon no shield saber proficiency fighter ,and a bigotry toward magic and arcane users.

I've only did it because the rest of the cast were special snowflakes and there were ridiculously OP characters in the previous campaing.

So the Asgardians were afraid of big bad wolf Fenrir and have imprisoned him. Little did they know the Loki spawn would develop a counter to this: a splinter of his personality, anthropomorphised into humanoid form looking like Tom Hiddleston, released into material plane in order to grow in strength and prepare the reunion and the greates jailbreak ever.

Welcome F, The Beguiler.

I remember your stories, always good ones, hope you get a group and have more stuff to post soon.

Also goddamn, so many players don't actually take their character's culture into account when making them, unless it's "HURRDURR PROUD WARRIOR RACE". Nice to see a more mundane take on it's relevance.

Farm boy that comes from a long line of similar small folk, lots of siblings. Farmland started going bad one day, and there were a few straws drawn to see who would have to leave and either look for a way to fix it, or find a good source of income to funnel back home; either way, one less mouth to feed. He was one of the few that drew short straws, and off he went.

Fast forward a couple of years and he's made a living as a wandering courier, delivering things discretely (while being blissfully unaware about the shady dealings occasionally involved in the stuff he delivers) and quickly. Most of the money he's made/makes is sent straight back home, and he lives a good life in general. At least until he's kidnapped by the god of hedonism in his sleep, but that's less backstory and more the actual campaign story.

In an upcomming game I kinda wana do a drow-version of pic related (In B4 DESTINY SUCKS/VIDYAGAEMS SUCK!).

Short version is, in the campaign setting, the elves used to have a great and powerful civilization that was on the top of the pyramid, so to speak... but this position of superiority lead to complacency and corruption and the civilization began to collapse in on itself.
During this time the other races took advantage of this opportunity and banded together in retaliation. What was once the world's most powerful civilization was driven underground almost overnight, and over the centuries that have followed have been reduced to little more than squabbling bands of raiders, thieving and attacking the surface just to survive... devolving into the form of Drow that they are today.

The world has mostly forgotten the first Elven Empire, but I want to play a character who remembers. A character who wants to return his people to their former glory, or at least escape from the pit of degradation and desperation that they have been reduced to. Who's willing to work with other races in the hope of proving not all his people are the monsters they've been reduced to... to somehow, some way, drag his people kicking and screaming out the degeneracy they've now by-and-large embraced to their own detriment for the sake of their own survival.

That all being said, I have no idea what to do as far as a class or anything else for this character. I don't really want to be a badass Drizzt type who succeeds simply by being an edgy badass who's good at fighting... leaning more towards being a historian or lorekeeper or something of the sort, but wizard and cleric don't exactly fit what I want.

A ratfolk who, like most, was born and raised in the slums. The lower levels are a lawless den of petty criminals and violent gangs. Seeking a better life he moved to the metropolis's upper levels. But because of his uncouth personality and lack of education he could not ascend above the level of petty crime.

That is until a society cat burglar took notice of him. Belittling his sloppy work and his lack of social graces at first, he took to mentoring the ratfolk on a bet. So under the gentleman thief's guidance he was able to hone his skills and become somewhat more personable.

Now he's a respected member of high society and a wanted jewel thief. Women want him. Men want him, too. The city guard especially want him. He goes where the action is, leaving a trail of empty pockets and broken hearts in his wake.

I've written mine in sort of a dialogue with a stranger. He's a human fighter for our upcoming campaing;
Oh, hello there. Come, sit by the fire, keep yourself warm. After all, no fire should keep only one person warm. I mean, how else would you explain it's radiance then?
A pleasant night, isn't it? No clouds, no rain, only the stars and the moon, shining above us. I've heard it's a bit colder because of that, but isn't it worth it? The beauty of stars... I've always been fascinated by it.
So, who are you....? Not a big speaker I see, eh? Fear not, I wish you no harm. Quite the opposite actually.
Who am I? Oh, now you will get me talking. My name is Siegmund, and I am the hero, who will fix the world.
>>
>>50361124
Oh, no need to hide the look. I get it all the time. But do you know, I am right to claim so? Hear my story, and then judge by yourself.
As a child, I was growing up in a big castle, next to the /nonamegiven/. I was living with the royals you see, with dukes and barons and such! Well, I wasn't quite one of them you see. My father was the keeper of the royal stables, and my mother was a handmaiden to the duchess. Ah, my parents. I still miss them from time to time. My mother was the kindest woman alive, and my father, the most honest man on this world, and the next on, I swear on my sword! They still are my inspiration to uphold these values wherever I go.
Right, back to the story. As I grew, I helped my father alot, and he told me so much about the world. He used to be a soldier you see, until he was taken in by the duke. Ah, such a kind man the duke was, to let my father work for him. Anyhow, my father kept telling me stories about his travels and the world he saw. He spoke of creatures, endless forests, blue oceans, beautiful women, civilizations and wonders men can hardly speak of. With big eyes I listened to my father speak of such beauties and I dreamt every night I would visit every single one of them.
But at the same time my father spoke of beauties, he also spoke of terrors this world hides. Monsters. Wars. Hatered amongst men. He told me such things are poison which keep the world from being a trully happy place.
This made me sad, you see. Why would we fight amongst eachother, if we can work together for a better future for all of us? Was there trully noone, who could speak some sense to these people, to show them what me and my father saw?
>>
>>50361129
One day, my mother came to me. She said she has excellent news; she told me I am finally old enough to know a special secret.
You see, I wasn't really her son. I was actually droped on the doorstep of the castle when I was a baby by a powerful wizard. He told my mother, that once I reach certain age, she should tell me, that I am in fact special; She told me, I was destined to become the hero, who will fix the world.
Ah, I see the disbelief in your eyes. I had it too when mother spoke of this. But do you see this piece of cloth I have tied around my neck? I was wraped in this very cloth when the wizard gave me to my mother. And she told me, the cloth is special, for as long as I wear it, I will have the power of the hero on my side. And the moment she gave me the cloth, I could feel it's power. I knew it was my destiny to become the hero, who will fix the world.
And so I left the castle, hugging my mother, father and my 12 brothers and sisters goodbye. Now that I think of it, it was a good thing that I left when I did. Our room was getting kinda loaded with people.
And so I wonder the world and help people wherever I find them. With the money they have given me so far I have managed to buy myself an armour and a sword, so I can be a proper hero. Such, that can also protect the innocent and slay monsters and creatures of all sorts!
So you see, stranger, you do not need to fear me or my sword. In fact, they are in your service, if you ever need help or suffer injustice.
What is that you say? Folks need help in your village? Well, then I guess I should be going. If you would just point me in the right direction.
Of course I am leaving right now! Evil never rests. And so should not those, who seek to cleanse the world of it!

Female human paladin of the goddess of light who has a twin sister she's tracking down.
Sister was also supposed to eventually become a paladin, but became a bard instead- which would have been fine had she not suddenly run off seeking ADVENTURE!
So now she, straight out of training at the minimum allowed age for a paladin, has taken it upon herself to have her first mission be to find her sister.
They were orphans raised by the church of the god she serves, and if they ever tried to find out who their parents were it would be a pretty damn big shock. But it's probably never going to come up.
She's huge for a woman, and strong- she could probably pass as a 'handsome' man if she wanted. She likes oranges and hates chocolate.

My standard:

Guy of no real standing from average village, with anti-social tendencies. Got in fights, couldn't hold a job, developed into mild sociopathy as he grew up. Became a drifter/mercenary/adventurer/whatever is appropriate for the setting, doing odd jobs and shady things to make money.
Basically an unrepentant amoral dick, cause I figure there's no way normal people become murder-hobos.

A rogue who fled the city for actions he obviously didn't commit, ended up seeking refuge with an Orc clan, think of the Dushniks from TES. He won, his competitor was the clan chief's daughter, and unbeknownst to him, he was also betrothed to the daughter. He's currently being hunted by her to solidify the marriage.

Half-Orc Warlock
Lived in a big city, worked in the port, tried to support his gurl, but it ain't easy for a half-orc.
Hears some wizard-type is looking for brave people to accompany him on a naval expedition, pays well. Has bad reputation of a madman and stuff, so superstitious seamen are in no rush to join. Half-orc takes the chance.
Sail away.
Wizard-type treats him with respect, unlike most people in the city, is an all-round nice guy. Even tries teaching the half-orc to read, using his books, though half-orc can't even understand what they are about. Half-orc secretly picks up some mannerisms and a few smart words from him.
Finally arrive at the destination - an island that isn't on modern maps and looks like it was part of the sea-floor for a while.
Wizard-type turns out to be a warlock, begins a ritual to invoke whatever dwells in that city. Makes a mistake, unspeakable horrors just devour him from withing and set about destroying the ship and killing the crew. The half-orc prays to whatever dwells here to spare him, promises anything in return, he just gotta get back to his girl. Passes out.
Wakes up on the mainland shore. There's a strange amulet on his neck, he can't take it off. Hears whispers. The amulet wants him to go somewhere, do something, promises to give the power the half-orc needs to complete the task.
So the half-orc becomes a warlock and sets off on adventures, to complete the amulet's tasks and to learn enough to get rid of it.

He's a dissolute son of a shipping company owner who has spent most of his life wandering from one brief fascination to the next. After getting expelled from his school for unsanctioned dueling and a brief stint in a dueling school, he has wandered north, seeking more 'authentic' excitement and heroics. Though he fancies himself a womanizer, his results are mixed at best and usually end in some sort of disaster for him. While he claims that he's developing his own school of combat to reach to future students at his own dueling academy, that seems dubious at best.

A tiefling that, after being abandoned and left to die by her stuck up noble parents that didn't like the fact she was a tiefling, ended up being taken in by a gang of vagrant orphans. She grew up with this gang, making herself useful by helping pull off robberies or participating in fights against rival gangs. As she grew, however, she decided that she didn't want I live this kind of life forever, and so left her friends to join the military.
Her time in the military was mostly uneventful, as the empire was mostly at peace, but her time there taught her order and discipline, and helped expose her to the wider world. After a few years doing this, she began having odd dreams, dreams of a godly figure asking her to take up arms in his service. It wasn't long after that she by chance ran into some representatives of a paladin order that were scouting for potential members, and after mentioning her dreams, they realized that it was their patron calling her. She then resigned from the military, joining the paladins instead, and quickly picking up on the divine magic of their order.

From there, it wasn't that long until she ran into the rest of the party, becoming the resident tank and healer.

Does anyone actually care about backstory?

Like, the whole point of an RPG is that your backstory develops in play. Up until that point, your backstory is "Sir I-Don't-Give-A-Fuck".

It seems stupid to hype up a character as the last scion of a noble bloodline, when he dies after getting shanked by goblins in the first dungeon.

In the campaign's setting, dwarves dont age physically at all, but only mentally.
Because of this, there is a huge problem with senile dwarves making up a large part of the dorf population.
Additionally, dwarf country is something akin to a cross between classic xenophobic Japan, and rome in its conquering days.
This put together has made it so that a lot of the dwarves that have succumbed to senility are drafted as shock troops and convinced that it will be their final trial before they pass on into the afterlife.

My character however, survived a battle he wasn't supposed to, and is now convinced that he has passed into limbo, where he must prove himself worthy of the afterlife.
He has already made friends with several individuals, convinced that they are to be his spiritual guides.

He barely remembers home, but he thinks he has family to do proud.
And so he shall slay the wicked tyrant and finally rest.

Okay, I'm waiting on confirmation from the GM to get into a Dark Heresy game, so I've got 3 characters ready to see which one will cover any roles needed.

1.) A Tech priest who has grown disillusioned to the concept of Machine spirits, but also knows what happens to anyone deemed a heretek. So whilst anyone watches or he's otherwise being monitored, he'll perform the rites and swing the incense, but if he's by himself he'll just not bother with all that malarkey and do things his way. Provides tech support in all things, as well as kit upgrades and maintenance.

2.) A surprisingly chill Sororitas novice who - whilst as pious as any sister - is well...pretty relaxed about things and prefers to let her actions speak for her. The kind of person you want around when you're winding down from a party. Provides combat as well as legitimacy for the party without bringing the Inquisition into things.

3.) Spiffing Praetorian Guardsman. Think Colour Sergeant bourne from Zulu. Err...that's all I got for this one. Still needs a bit of work. Provides combat, mainly ranged and indirect with a touch of good ol' Praetorian class.

Alright, let's try to sum up around 4 pages of text.

Half-orc rape-baby raised in orphanage of town where orc attacks are semi-common, abused to the point of mild disfigurement. He tried to go out into the world and make a simple life for himself by being a regular lumberjack. After several years of hard work everything is taken away from him by a bandit attack where most of his comrades are slain and he is taken prisoner and sold as a slave to a quarry/mining operation. With a combination of his life being ruined and the culture in the new prison being very "every man for himself" so did he grow to only care about two things, himself and amassing strength (and by extension, power, to better be able to serve himself). He established himself as top dog of the slaves and, in exchange for keeping revolts other discomforts to a minimum managed to enjoy some benefits. After being visited by an entity in a dream, that slowly seemed to fill him with strange powers so did he wake up from his more and more complacent life as a slave. The entity promised him unrivaled freedom and the powers needed to protect that freedom. Organizing a bloody revolt with a very large amount of lives lost for nothing more than a distraction so did he manage to finally escape the pits. Now having sought out mercenary work to both hone his skills and to amass wealth until he can reach a point of having enough for a very, very fancy early retirement and the ability to throw money around however he see fit.
he's supposed to be inspired by hardcore egoism, for the most part in a very short-term way. it's me trying to make an evil PC work
>>
>>50357133
>Having backstory for character longer than 5 sentences
Why people are doing this?

And don't tell me about fucking roleplay value, because it has zero roleplay value. If you have an elaborate backstory for your PC, you should rather write a short story than try to play the game about it.
Want to roleplay? Great, take a basic idea of your character and then roleplay the shit out of it, expanding said character and let them grow.

But don't you bring a pre-made character, especially if you then proceed to play "first level" basic shit.
>>
>>50362394
because it gives us greater connection to our characters? because when another character asks our character something about their life, there's a consistent background to take answers from, instead of making up stuff on spot, risking inconsistencies?

My next character's backstory, in a Gundam-esque campaign:

- Born to a moderately well off family of shipbuilders
- Didn't want to work for the family business after it was bought out by a megacorp
- Left home on friendly terms, used her shipbuilding knowledge to start a salvage business
- Lives in a converted hulk of a space liner in a junkyard, runs a moderately successful scrap and salvage business
- Fell in love with a mild mannered office worker who saved her from getting arrested for trying to hack a slot machine, got married
- Spends her days working 9-5 then goes out and plays arcade games, gets drunk, sings karaoke, watches sports etc
- When it looks like her colony is going to be invaded sets her affairs in order and enlists as a mech pilot.

If your character has a backstory, you're a shit roleplayer and you're wasting everyone's time.
>>
>>50357133
Maybe it's the influence of the first TTRPG I've ever played (the old-ass Witcher) and the character sheets it had, but there was roughtly enough space to cram 3 sentences into "Backstory" table and only if you squeezed your letters tightly. Yet the game was ALL about roleplaying, with GM using mechanics maybe once or twice per scenario and players rolling maybe once.

Either way, there is no point making backstory for the sake of it. You want to roleplay a character, then do so. Writing your OC "fanfiction" is not the way.

Dunno, I play as a con-artist. That's literally the whole backstory. But then is the stuff the other character - and players behind them - are fed to and believe into. My players are currently apart of the Toad Company, and have no idea about the previous. (In a separate campaign, I'm going to subtly introduce them to his past self after taking such a liking to him as a boss.)

I had this character idea based on a previous campaign.

In it, I played a somewhat stereotypical 'friendship is awesome' Kind of adventurer. In terms of crunch, though, I built him Tonka Tough; max armor, max toughness. And it paid off.

Far too well.

By the end of the campaign every PC except mine had died. And we were in a no-rez universe. My character has had to watch as everyone he knew and cared about died in front of him.

So this next character is something of a continuation of that. Different system, different rules, same guy. But the list of dead friends has gotten too long. He's long since stopped caring about saving anything. There's always an adventurer willing to die for the cause, anyway.

Of course, what you don't do by volition you often do by habit anyway. He's been in the business sof long its the only thing he's good at.

Maybe someone can help him learn to love life again. Or maybe he'll finally find the end to the sad storybook tale that is his life.

Lucius Vorgen is tired of this shit.

He's tired of the enemy's shit (shooting at him), he's tired of the boss' shit (yelling at him), and he's really, REALLY tired of YOUR shit (whining at him).

Medics in the Astra Militarum see some pretty grisly things. Heads get taken off, torsos get ripped in half, and soldiers get eaten alive. That pissy little thing you call an injury? That's barely a blip on the fucking radar.

You got shot in the arm? Five minutes and you're back on the line. Your buddy got his arm taken off? Cauterize it, dope him up, and put him back in the fight with a pistol. Fleshborer in the leg? You don't need legs to man a heavy stubber, so you're the new loader - amputate, stimm, and throw him into the trench.

The sergeant says his "bedside manner needs some fucking work". You know what, idiots like him that try to be emperor-damned heroes need work in the head. Lucius' job is to make sure there's enough meat in the trenches, and by the Emperor that's what he does. Don't expect him to pretend it's anything else.

Than I was expecting

But you actually took a huge turn for "better" (from a narrating view) with somewhat realistic behavior of his father and sad but also relatable story of family abuse, his mother dying of normal darkage causes and he just going on his own, without some edgy:
>after I took revenge on my father for years of abuse I embarked on a dark journey to discover my secret identity!

All in all, very good.

Sir Ivorn Grethum
The Mammoth Knight.

He served the lone princess of the most northernmost province of Near, also known to the inhabitants as the Frost Mouth. The small settlement was ruled by Wendela Fraun. The Mammoth Knight was one of her three Knights of the Frost Mouth court. The princess and him eventually fell in love. Things were amazing, Ivorn and Wendela shared a powerful love for many years, but her cousin, 32nd in line for the throne, invited her to study in the capital city's college for a few years. Her time came and passed. She never came home, she met a Suiter in the south and married him. The small keep in Frost Mouth became nothing more than a frozen fortress. The Mammoth Knight roamed the frozen wasteland for years, with his solitude he grew fortitude. He's the last knight of Frost Mouth, he continues to follow his last order to "wait for her return and protect her home."

A man that was once a horribly immoral cultist eventually gets a knife in the lungs because he made the mistake of being a horribly immoral cultist. As he slowly drowned in his own blood, he sent out an APB prayer to the gods offering his eternal service for another chance at life. Well, before the evil gods could show up, some dickbutt godess of friendship and rainbows swoops in and makes the pact. The man is resurrected as spooky scary skeleton under the influence of the goddess. She constantly whispers into his mind, and any time he does something immoral or disobeys her, he gets a headache like someone was driving a spike through his skull. She forces him to be one of her clergy. He comes off as a super tsundere hero with a heart of gold, but he really would slaughter everybody given the chance.

Essentially, my own take on a lolhealbot cleric.

Scion of a minor noble family, born "different" (had six fingers in both hands and feet, his teeth were vagely wolfly and whe had useless wings "made of human skin" that stay folded at his back as a hump), the most supersticious folk wanted to burn him. Still, things were mostly fine, until the gods of the land anointed him as their oracle.
His first prophecy was rather bad (not "Twilight of the Gods" bad, but the end of an age none the less*). No one was completely sure wahtever it came from the gods or from somewhere more sinister, the comunity was divided. The character, then a scared chield, fled home and walked far and wide, away from his fate and the madness. Lived several years as a vagobound, bouncing here and there and back again, staying at churches and abusing whatever good will he could find. Never went back (he being at his birthplace is a pre-contition to thing starting going south).

* It has to do with a in-universe metaplot of the GM, involving the Gods (who were the PCs of a former 5 year long campaign) and shit.

If anything, I've learned to ignore backstories almost completely. While GMs might find them useful, rest of the players literally couldn't care less. Which means the only use the backstory would get would be getting butt-fucke by GMs and/or giving them plot hooks that would in turn made the character look like a special snowflake for the rest of the party.

Thus - I don't give a fuck about this anymore and it works for me. If someone asks me something about the character, I can still answer, but I see no reason to write an elaborate bio. Or write it down at all.

Grew up learning alchemy from the town pellar, made enough coin to go off to a non-prestigious school that taught alchemy. Was sorted into an unpopular house because of the focus on alchemical potions and whatnot, with several teachers telling him that he might want to just forget about alchemy because of the negative stigma at the school. Did it anyway. While being chased around, happened upon an old storage closet full of old books and spent the night reading them to avoid being caught.

Eventually graduated, top of class, and went home to open a shop, where he sold potions and ingredients. Continued studying through his career; his experiments brought him some small fame for inducing draconic changes in small animals. Never really noticed that he was changing as well until his wife remarked about how he was growing scales from the backs of his arms.

The villagers didn't take too kindly to the changes, and branded him a demon, a monster, whatever they thought they could get away with. Adventurers wandering into town were told that he was a monster and that they'd pay well to have him exterminated, including in front of his face. One night, while returning from gathering rare flowers that only bloom at dusk, he came back to find his shop being burned, his wife screaming from within. She was dead when he got to her, protected from the fire by the changes.

He's searching for a way to bring her back from the dead without resorting to necromancy or magic. A tale of the Philosopher's Stone, the mercurial extract thereof which can supposedly revive the dead, will be his first attempt.

Half of this thread is about pointing out how pointless it is.
The other half is super special snowflakes and characters so bland they shouldn't be described in the first place.

Halfling druid in a family of halfling druids trained since he could walk in the ways of nature and abominable beasts. His family were often conscripted by the duke of the land to accompany his knights as healers and advisors as they went on mighty quests to vanquish the darkness of their land.

One day, the boy's father was performing a ritual with the rest of the family present. He was trying to bind a foul demon, the presumed source of the lands corruption, into the earth to trap him there for eternity. Something went wrong, and Nature became angry at the druids for planting something so foul in its body. The druids were punished, warped into humanoid-shaped trees, forever preserved in their moment of agony, forced to look at what they had done, there to remain until the end of time. The boy, being too young for such things, only just came back from play in the fields with the other boys from the village. He saw his family now as a haunted grove, a wooden shadow of what they once were.

At age eight, he set out into a world alone and with only his most treasured possessions and the meager coinage and equipment he could find in his house, looking for the army that his family had aided so many times, to ask for their aid in bringing them back.

He comes from a noble line of knights who have served the royal family of a kingdom as long as anyone can remember.

One day, his father suddenly leaves the family and is never heard about again. Rumors begin to circle that he has defected for a neighboring kingdom led by some racist asshole king. Others talk about the "family's curse".

In order to find his father and clear up those ill rumours, he trains with one of his father's old time companions(a dwarf cleric who fough alongside the character's grandfather and father) before setting off in search for whatever the truth may be.

The "family curse" says that all the sons of the family will be forced, one way or another, to kill their father. Wether it is a curse or just a grim coincidence is anyone's guess, but the character hopes he'll be the one to prove it wrong.

You know, this reminds me... I'd actually like to play a Samurai transplanted by the Date Clan. Sometime in the 1500s they actually paid to have a group of about 500 Japanese Christians send to Spain. If memory serves, you can still find descendants of these immigrants today with the surname 'Japon'.

Fairly skilled surgeon, a solid 8 years of medschool, 3 years of practice. Sometimes things go wrong though, a popped stitch here, a rejection there. But she was always there for him when things got rough. Until a drunk driver took that away from him. He tells himself he could have saved her, if only he had been there and not cutting open someone he didn't care about. But he wasn't there and now she isn't here.

So he turned to drinking and soon they turned him away from the hospital and in searching for a job he found what might have always been his calling. Back alley surgery. For 6 years he took all comers, gaining notoriety among the more unscrupulous characters in the city. They knew if they got shot, Steve would patch them up on the cheap, no questions asked.

One night awoken from a self induced haze, Steve answered the call from a panicked man who carried with him someone who had seen the worse end of a shotgun. Steve did what he could, piecing things back in place, sewing what remained into some semblance of order. He wanted to tell the man his friend was a lost cause, but he refused to hear it.

Imagine Steve's surprise when the man on the table jumped to life and tore open the other's throat, draining it of blood. This was just Steve's introduction to an entire world he never knew.

Honestly probably one of my favorite characters to date. Show up to a VtM, everyone has these long windy names, Duskraven, パインチッパー(Which means Pine Dipper), and Malcore. Dark, brooding, and overly weeaboo vampires. There I am as Steve Baker. Just a guy who's happy to have a second chance at life.

She was destined to be the chosen warrior-queen of her tribe, but she died at the age of 16 to her jealous older brother. Thirty years later, a necromancer found her grave. Sensing the fate-magics upon her corpse, the necromancer raised her as a powerful skeletal death-knight. Yet so great was her power that she retained memory, broke thrall, and killed the necromancer.

Somehow, in the time she was dead, her brother had united twenty tribes, with theirs at head. She seeks vengeance and reclamation of her lost life, but it won't be easy; not only does she inspire fear in those she wishes as allies, but the necromancer was only an apprentice to a greater one.
>>
She is the daughter of a famous landsknecht known around the lands as "The Degenerate," a woman infamous for her raping, killing, and pillaging, in that order. Of the thirteen children, she was the forth, the offspring of an abomination that her mother raped as a joke, and this humor has inflicted itself on her life. She never saw her father, or any of the fathers of her brothers and sisters, as they were all dead when they were born as their mother dumped them in an orphanage.

She was a beast of a girl, freakishly tall and disgustingly fat from depression induced overeating. She hated everything her mother stood for. Her mother was pretty, so she was ugly. Her mother was a slut, so she was chaste. Her mother abandoned everything she ever had to pursue her dreams of sex and killing, so she stayed at home, trying the best a monster can be in regular life. At some point though, when one of her younger sisters ascended to fame, she couldn't keep being how she wanted to be. One day she saw herself in the mirror, tears from her eyes and her lips contorted in an unwitting grin, and realized she was an imposing monster. A devilishly imposing monster. Having accepted the role of a fat bitch with a shit eating grin, she began to hide underneath her fat the muscles of the monster she made herself out to be. She realized she was born a beast, so she must own it. 6'8 and 700 pounds, she's turned to a life that's an ironic mimickry of her mother. Flirtatious to insult, violent out of rage rather than joy, she takes the money she swindles, robs, pillages and bullies from others for the sake of what remains of her family. She takes pride in that whatever she does, she won't ever be her mother.

PF rules, Spheres of Power and Path of War classes exclusively, original setting (slightly racist, elves are very Fey and certain areas are extremely racist and anti-mage). Started level 10 (continuing story with new group hired by settled old group). Partly made because I was sick of being the fucking tank

A half-elf girl raised by her nomadic elven mother and trained in illusions they used to conceal their fey origin. The mother was capricious and lived her life by whim, manipulating for fun and stealing to get by, regularly breaking in to take what she wanted and murdering the residents when she was caught. As they traveled, they saw misdirected hate and judgement everywhere they went and most areas remained unchanged after their visits and were identical to previous trips on their return. The world was stagnant and uncaring, nothing they did would change anything, so why not just have fun? The mother imparted her skills to her daughter, but trained her in a philosophy of survival first, with empathy taking a back seat to practicality, the woman was callous and raised a girl unsure of her place in the world.

1/? (sorry, it's long. As I said, picking up from previous campaign, so backstory had to tie into at least one of the old characters and account for existing experience and personality)
>>
>>50370776
The mother was killed when the girl was 10, executed by the local guard after they tracked a murder to her. The mother told her daughter to distract them while she set up some kind of plan, but when this tiny girl, scared and uncertain, was confronted by two large men in mail and plate with blades as long as she was tall who demanded harshly that she tell them where the murderer was, fear won out. The girl, raised on stories and examples of how cruel and uncaring people where when someone was in their way, sold out the woman who had shown no empathy to her daughter. The woman was executed by hanging, the girl watching from a shadowed alley as the woman who had raised her died in violence and pain and, even as she felt the tears trace down her illusory cheeks, she felt a strange sense of elation overtake her, and she realized she was free.

Over the years, the girl became a woman, skilled in the magic of illusion and mind and well-honed in the art of stealth. She had sworn never to take a life or cause any unnecessary disturbance, desperate to leave as little trace as possible as she travelled the world, never keeping a name, a face or a personality for longer than a month as she flitted from one group to another, going wherever the wind took her, ever wary of being outed and stealing whatever she could from whoever wouldn't miss it. Though she never showed it, she lived her life with a constant undercurrent of fear. She had no friends and no enemies, no family and no possessions besides the clothes she wore; she had no identity of her own.

2/?
>>
>>50370783

And why should she? Opinions and possessions created enemies, people who wanted you dead, and friends and connections just made it harder to escape when you got caught. For all she knew, her time was almost up anyway. She didn't know much about the academic side of magic or the races, but she knew that fey blood mixed inconsistently with the blood of the other races. There were half-elves who lived to 200 and there were some who dropped dead at 30, some would suffer the same weakening body as other races to remind them their time was close, others would simply drop dead where they stood, otherwise appearing in the prime of their lives. She was 27, for all she knew, she only had a few more years to live. To distract herself from these thoughts, she had taken up a hobby of reading the social climates of the various places she visited and compared them to others, taking no small amount of amusement in how many people felt their lives were big or significant in some way, despite the minuscule scale that seemed so obvious to her. Everywhere she went, people had grand ideas, big dreams or believed they were destined for greatness, and every time she went back, she saw a few more faces mourning a dead adventurer or revolutionary, or faces carrying the weight of rejection or the hope that their children would accomplish the dreams they failed to achieve. She was insignificant, she would leave no mark on the world, but she was free.

Once upon a time in not-Mexico, the most burliest beautiful orcish courtesan crushed yet another of her overconfident suitors in a spirited bout of snu-snu. Nine months later she bore an equally burly half-orc son. Not wanted her son to grow up in a bordello, the courtesan sent her child to a nearby monastery, where they taught him the ways of Lucha Libre. The child went on to earn the name of El Toro, the Dauntless Bull, which was a grand replacement for Verdito, the monks' other name for him.
>>
>>50370796
And then she heard whispers, rumours of a great change. The city most vehemently opposed to magic, who had trained death-squads to hunt down mages wherever they could find them and developed techniques specifically to overcome mages with purely martial skill and arms, had suffered terrible damage and, during the reparation, the king who ruled the land, who's brother had ruled there until it's collapse during his attempted coup had installed a mage as second in command of the county, installing him in one of the major towns with plans to build a magic academy there. The irony was too delicious to resist. She made her way there, changing her identity almost weekly and using her skills to ensure that no-one noticed the traveler in the mess of other goings on, until she reached the town near the keep where the mage's school was being built. The mage in charge of the school frequently interacted with the townsfolk and it didn't take her long to single him out, his face covered in scars and carrying a caring if slightly distant demeanor.

What's the practical application of this all?
Do the GM uses it as plot hooks?
Do you discuss it in-character with rest of the party?
Do you even bother to role-play parts of it?

Because what's the point, if it exists for nothing else than masturbatory reasons?

After a week of reading him from the shadows every time he left his tower, she decided to get a closer look at the new lord. She approached as he was going about his business, but was caught off-guard when he saw through her disguise. She knew not to run, that would draw attention, so she stayed and talked to him, eventually agreeing to meet again in public as he wanted her in his academy, feeling that his classroom could gain much from her skills. After nearly a month and a dozen meetings, they drew up a contract; she would teach him the academic side of her magic and enroll as a student with the caveat that she was free to leave any time she wanted. Several more years passed and she began to grow attached to this lord, feeling that she had finally found a friend in the deeply scarred mage. She told him snippets of her tale and he told her his in turn, until one day he was asked to send someone to join a group with members hired by each of the local nobles, all friends and former travelling companions of the mage, but whom he grown somewhat distant from during their time ruling, his natural distaste for the aristocracy and this place in general making him on edge about his old friend's motives. Deciding he wanted someone he could count on to report to him directly and who would be best equipped to escape if things went wrong, he asked the woman, now nearly 30, if she would go for him. She said she would under the caveat that she still be held under their existing contract and that he promise to help or recall her if there was trouble with the other members. And so the game begins

Sorry for the length, if anyone TL:DRs, I completely understand.

TL:DR: paranoia and neglect made anxiety-riddled half-elf mage who specialized in sneaking and undermining, could die any time due to weird fey blood and is now travelling with a single group of people on more than one brief trip for the first time in 20 years.

I would appreciate any feedback, though. I do want to make better chars and backstories so any help would be great

Mostly, it's just used to help me get a solid grip on the character as a real, living, breathing person and gives some good things to use in RP if it ever comes up. Quick side-note, about half of the details were thought up after we had started playing, so don't think I started off with all that. Plus, it's just fun to write and it gives the GM ideas to work with (and helps him understand the character, which helps as our group runs very character-focused games). We discuss the basic character concept with the party, but we like to keep a few surprises for the other players. We are a fairly RP-heavy group (about half of the sessions I've had with the current party have been pure RP and only about 1/2-1/3 of those have even had much plot progression, one was just the party sitting around playing a drinking game where they had to answer questions about themselves from the other members as everyone got progressively more drunk, though we did a fade to black after everyone had asked everyone else one question each. Most of us invented most of our backstory there).

It's a little bit long but here goes. (Using anon to replace original name for reasons)

'Anon is a Lizardfolk Warpriest of Sarenrae was raised by devout priests of Sarenrae who adopted him from his biological parents, he gives sermons out left and right inspiring quite a few folk that the path of Sarenrae is the correct way however he develops an urge, a need to give justice to those who are redeemable in his eyes but while Sarenrae says it is okay to kill those who are irredeemable he can't bring himself to do it - no matter what so in the end he brings them to prison without fail.

One of the many people he saved with one of his sermons offered him some breakfast, they became quite close after many years had passed.

Eventually they fell in love and had a child, Anon's super hero identity had become a local celebrity and they even began to call him
"The red Kaiser", even his son looked up to the hero, however one of the villains that had come into this town was his biological sibling, when Anon found out he asked where their real parents were and with little to no hesitation his brother gave their location.

So Anon set off to meet with his parents to see what kind of people they were, as fate would have it they were quite kind and explained why they had to put Anon up for adoption - while it was an unreasonable issue Anon couldn't bring himself to hate them and so he went back home only to find that his brother had broken out of prison and kidnapped Anon's child and so Anon has set off in an attempt to find and save his son - and hopefully his brother as well.'

A half-orc that was raised in an orcish tribe. He always strived to be just as tough as the other orcs because being weak meant becoming a slave to someone else. His brother became chief and jealousy and hatred lead him to destroy the tribe through trickery. After being found out he fled before the others had the chance to kill him. Eventually he became a bandit and found his way into the thieves' guild, little more than a hired thug, he lives a contented life. Now, he becomes bored with the rather sedentary lifestyle he began living and decides to seek adventure.
>>
>>50357133
Weirdness runs in the family. His parents only met twice, both giant coincidences, only dwarfed in unlikeliness by the many times they've missed each other.

The first time the meeting lasted for a few weeks, and he was then conceived.

The second meeting happened under strange stars hidden by a powerful storm, when unlikely events brought them back together, eight months and three weeks later, that his father could witness his birth.

After that he lived with them by turns: A few months with one, before tragedy would force him out only for the other to find him and take him in, over and over again. During the in-between periods, he learned to fend for himself.

Little Johnny isn't so little anymore, but his first name won't change itself. He walks the in-betweens, the alleys between buildings, the streets between towns. He always has people he hangs with, but only for a time. He never stays in one place too long.

He's a little cold in places he should be warm.

By the time he started working as a bodyguard for hire in the shady circles of organized crime, they'd had their eyes on him for quite some time. Someone who bleeds money the way he does, without ever stopping long enough to work a job till now must have a secret.

By the time his hands got bloody with the first boss who tried to catch him flatfooted, his strangeness was obvious for all to see, though not in specifics.

"If you look for it you'll find it" is supposed to be advice, not the description of an ability.

At least he got his fight.

Excuse the edge, but I like the theme I got going on.

>essentially ninja girl born to a ninja clan that has dedicated their life to killing monsters and demons
>clan is fucked up on multiple levels, from incest to keep their "demon" blood pure to Hunger Game styled training to weed out the weak
>makes it through all of the stupid shit, finally becomes a true a monster killer
>is pretty good at it, pretty well known in the clan
>her brothers and sisters don't like it, conspire to frame her
>they frame her successfully, before she's executed she escapes from her bedroom and heads into the family shrine hidden deep within the mountain
>forbidden text rumored to be stashed here, she decides she might as well read it before dying
>turns out forbidden text is actually parchment sealed to bind a demon to it
>makes a pact with the demon, demon helps her escape and now it's using her as a host while it recovers from generations of imprisonment
>in return she uses the demon's power to kill monsters

Not exactly original, but it seems like it might be fun to play.

Hmm... Thing is, I'm not sure that's it. I do the same thing when talking: if you get me going on a topic I want to talk about, then I can just go, sometimes for hours. Most of the rest of the time, I'm a pretty quiet guy, but then sometimes, I'll just start going and won't stop. I think it's more just that I want to add to it, I want to give comprehensive answers to questions and I love interesting little details and discussion of events. The whole mother thing wasn't even in there when we started playing and the bit with the lord was only put in because we had to tie it to the previous party. Hell, the whole execution scene was made up on the spot about an hour ago, then I'll go days or weeks without writing anything.

TL:DR I may have graphomania, I may not, reasons, explanation, tangent, the same when I talk

Let's try to not make it sound ridiculous, since I finally found a characters I really enjoy to roleplay

>A Jewish farmgirl living somewhere 1200 BC
>Herding sheeps and minding the livestock for the better half of her life
>Living with her old aunt and dozen of cousins
>Ends up unintentionally helping a wolf, which turned to be a witch-in-training roughtly her age
>Spend a lot of time together, when the witch sneaks to meet with her
>Eventually the witch-in-training shows up in full human glory in the household, bling and awe, asking the aunt if she would let the girl be hired in the nearby pastures
>The girl is technically lend for shiny shekels to the "master" training the witch
>The master turns out to be a pretty normal guy rather than some scary freak, if not the fact he's an Egyptian and really, really old, as in, 60 years old
>The girl spends next few years being trained in all the things a little Jewish girl shouldn't be taught, like astronomy, math and turning nasty boys into sparrows
>Never really drops the attitude of being just a simple shepherdess, even if it's all a past life at this point
>Almost always waaay out of her league when dealing with people and things around her
>Now just trying to make a living with her rather unusual skills

Probably sounds like boring trite, but it's the comfiest character I've ever played for past decade.

For a dark comedy campaign

Paranoid and dangerously outspoken magician and academic with a counterproductively high IQ and schizotypal personality disorder who became a popular cognitive scientist that would later become a cultural icon and target of conspiracy theories after her alleged death. She theorized in the 1990s that the exponential growth of the human population coupled with the rise of the Internet and other forms of communication would cause information to be produced too quickly and spread too easily without being destroyed, stacking up until humanity would reach an "information overload" where there are no more songs or movie scripts to write as everything has already been exhausted. The human attention span would crumble and the entire world and its workings would adapt to fit this entertainment-based paradigm, abandoning all logic and reason and seemingly working like a South Park episode. It is also the largest shift of power in human history, with the common rabble of first world countries rivaling their long-term overlords due to their control of information without fully understanding their power or the consequences. In this paradigm humanity would consume itself in pursuit of stimulation. In 2002, she was cryogenically frozen at the age of 44 after feigning a suicide and making it look like she was murdered, throwing a double-red-herring. In 2022, with humanity having made considerable progress towards her theoretical paradigm without her observation, she was unfrozen by a cult of animal-masked anarchists that sought to tear a hole in the fabric of reality and depart from the physical world.

Yeah, I was trying to be concise but looking at it again it makes him seem like an edgelord. A big part of his character (well, from what I've got so far) is that he's caught between his common sense and his better nature. He may be able to kill a dire wolf with his bare hands, but he has a soft spot for people that he doesn't really want to admit is there. Also, he almost died of embarrassment when a local girl heard him singing (what? a guy can have a hobby!) and said he sounded beautiful. He's bad with people, but he's worse with women.

>D&D/PF/Fantasy

>'Half'-Elf Magus/Spellsword/Gish

Background/Birth Status
>Actually like, 5/8 Elf. Still called 'half'
>Son of two Half-Elves (really, a Half Elf, and a 3/4 Elf)
>Mother is daughter of an Elf-King's second son, and a Half-Elf lowborn girl. Grew up in Elf-Kingdom.
>Father is a lowborn bastard from Human Kingdom, born of passion from a human village girl, and a suave Elvish adventurer. Human village girl gets pregnant Elf adventurer is killed while on adventure. Human village girl is teen pregnant. Village apprentice-blacksmith marries teen-pregnant village girl so she won't be an unwed mother. Half-Elf baby is born, grows up, is bros with stepdad and human half-siblings.
>Parents meet in Elf Kingdom.
>Fall in love/lust.
>Father marries into Mom's noble family.
>Baby happens.

Childhood
>Relatively un-eventful.
>Middle child of three.
>Comfortable home on family lands.
>Dad is still good blacksmith. Learns basic smithing from Dad.
>Develops a knack for Magic.
>Mom sends him to learn Magic from great-grandpa Elf King/tutors.
>Has same birthday as great-grandpa.
>Learn magic and swords good.
>Grow up at court.
>Nepotism happens, is knighted.

Adulthood
>Wanderlust as fuck.
>Confident in abilities.
>Young, bored, noble knight-errant.
>Mercenary work as fuck.
>Really enjoys helping people and meeting people.
>Naive.
>Believes the best of people.
>Heart on his sleeve.

He's the most recent version of my go-to character style. This version of him is a starry-eyed half-breed lesser noble from a Great House, wanting to do good in the name of his family. Will try his best to help people, and probably wind up hurt both physically and emotionally in the process.

The half-BBEG half-NPC I have in the campaign I'm DM'ing is a previous PC of mine, since my group likes to have persistent universes in our campaigns.

He's an immensely powerful sorcerer, who at the time of our campaign, had solved a magical civil war by killing all of the crazy power-hungry wizards involved, on both sides and prevented worldwide disaster from large-scale magical weapons usage. He's gone rogue since then, and views magic as something to be feared and controlled, rather than something that should be taught and embraced, as he once believed.

He's usually sensible, but he has a lazer-like focus and will never be swayed from a decided course of action without good reason. He's fathered bastards and been with many different women throughout his magically extended life, but all relationships have fallen short. The only fulfilling relationship he ever had was with his lifelong friend, but he was killed during the magical infighting. So now he's resigned himself to a life of ass-kicking by his lonesome.

I doubt this is worth posting but I'll do it anyway. It'll at least tell me if I'm really shit.

Robot Wizard set in a robot-dominant wastrel society set after a conventionally modern day set after a daemonic, medieval slave past where humanity once served dark eldritch powers.

See, what originally happened was that dark beings from the underworld were challenging holy, ethereal faries. They managed to get the drop on humanity and bend them to their whim for centuries. After a heroic cliche story where the holy ones exterminate most of the daemons, most artefacts are ruined save for some hidden tombs that emit traces of mystic power.

Before the war reached it's brink point, however, the daemons used a superweapon to destroy virtually every fairy and turned what didn't die into a statue, but retreated to the dark underworld of the earth to rest and regain power.

Unrelated to that in the modern day, humanity starts to experience more down-to-earth issues that we have to day and end up building a robotic network to help deal with it. Eventually, people decide "we can have these dumb fucks kill other people" and conspire wars with drones, assault droids and systematic AI in Planes, Ships, you name it.

Humanity dies out later on but the robots survive and manage to interpret some mangled version of sentience. There remains scattered chiefdoms or "Platforms" as they are referred to, constructed out of olden modern cities.

That brings me to my bitch-bot ER-43, who by order of ass coincidence, lives right on a mountain top above a pleasant Fairy meadow above a secret Daemonic cult-tomb. Through an evisceration job payed by a has-been (robot) archaeologist, he digs deep into the earth, reaching ground the Faries used back in the day to spin psionic powers into their essence using gold-weaving waterfalls. He accidentally upsets order and somehow converges with one of these waterfalls, gets powers. (Cont.)

Unfortunately, the offset triggers a fault in the earth, awakens a sleeper Daemon that checks up around the Fairy lands every two-hundred years to see if any are still around. He see's the robot and engages a curious conversation as to what he is, why he's come, his destiny. They have pleasantry talks, but once he reaches the 'humans made us and we ended up succeeding them' fresh-hold, he gets pissed off as hell, asks why his subsistence took hold to kill themselves off. He elaborates, says that the daemons were ready to again ensue nefarious takeover of mankind. Since they're gone, however, he gives a sinister warning to the robot to go up and 'prepare, for we shall take you instead'. He gives him a scroll, to show valuable proof of this transaction - out of cowardice, he keeps from showing people this until later.

He does so after getting dingy pay from the arch. He also manages to toy around with his powers, doing jesus-esque things with his local village, saving people, busting old ass idiots.

This gets the attention of a rivaling Platform, which is another 'morale evil' in the setting that has taken strides to take over the crumbling modern world and nominate themselves a superpower. Eventually though plot points I'm yet to fully develop, he's ended up captured by them and is imprisoned in a government-assisted laboratory. When he shows the Scroll, they do a 180 and study it, show that the daemons will start to invade the world. They want him - as he's proven to be increasingly powerful - to protect THEIR lands, give him that amount of time to prepare or else they'll deactivate him.

That's what I have so far.
>>
>>50373723
And, uh, I guess character wise, ER-43 is a little thoughtless and in vain. Questions everything, feigns optimism but is really just confused. He'd probably be a tragic mage who'd really want to be an adventurer.

The name goes by Ostaire. The Bastard child of an estranged human father and an enchantress elf beauty. His mother re married a human with magical abilities which lead to the birth of his prodigious step brother Uruvian.

Ostaire soon found himself pushed to the wayside as his mothers new lover and father to her second child began their life together in the city of Damasus. While still loved by his mother, Ostaire could feel only jealousy and spite towards his gifted younger brother. Choosing to spend more time at the cities major library than at home with his family, Ostaire soon learned of other avenues to acquire magical prowess.

A young half-elf who grew up in a temple / monastery and joined the clergy.

His father is an important politician and his afair with an elven woman threatened his career. The politician thus forced him on the temple at a very young age and shipped the elven mother off. Mother and son exchange letters. There's no contact to the politician at all.

Since the monks and priests have become his surrogate family, the half elf felt the need to join the order. He grew up well sheltered and got tuition on many topics.

Everything got new and exciting when he was first sent out on a missionary trip abroad. And that's where his adventure starts...

An idea I had brainstormed while playing head wizard of Winterhold, despite using nearly no magic in skyrim save the one required for entry.

A blademaster for a wizard's tower, he was brought in because he was into studying about ancient ruins. His youth was that his mother and father were wizards but every single son in the family chose to take up arms as soldiers and his sister's magical talent is wasted at the royal court, charming diplomats for gifts and a position of power.

His life as a sellsword after his 5 years of war was mostly being the muscle for squishy wizards and rogues who explore ruins and he developed a fascination for them as it gives him something to read about when they are far from civilization. He stumbles upon a map about ancient elven ruins and hears about a big commission for those who complete the research and his enthusiasm has him working full time at a wizard's tower.

A grey elf warlock/wizard gestalt.

Being a grey elf, he was born and lived in a sequestered fortress off in fuck-all nowhere in the mountains, heavily enchanted so that nobody would ever find it.

He messed around with evil lore, dark spells, and the like, eventually finding/recreating a ritual that would channel the powers of the abyss into him, giving him magic beyond simple wizardry.

Excited, and wanting to show all of his peers this magic, he spread it around... And found himself kicked out of the Grey Elf refuge, and bitter.

Now he's wandering the world trying to accrue enough money and resources to create a school where he can teach the lesser races his new magic... and prove its superiority against the simple wizardry taught by his homeland by piercing their wards and assaulting their walls.

Basically "What if Spiderman didn't have spider powers, but was a necromancer instead."

- Basically an awkward, gangly teenager whose parents instilled a really strong moral compass in him when they realised he had a gift for death magic.

They figured getting him to repress or otherwise ignore his gifts would lead to bad stuff, so they just taught him to use it for good.

His parents didn't die though, they're just a fisherman and his wife that life in a nice coastal town somewhere - he adventures to help people.

A lot of his powers revolve around disguising his summons as not to be instantly arrested/killed on sight; he's gotten pretty good at it.

He also asks permission of the spirit when bringing them back where possible. For example, village attacked by bandits - a few of the town guard dead? Ask the dead town guard if they'd like another shot at protecting their town, if yes - raise 'em. Kill bandits, then have dead bandits repair the village they attacked and so on.

Favourite character I've ever played.

For Up-coming IKRP having to adapt a few concepts.

New Concept:

Former Bar-Brawler, Private Investigator turned Missionary of the Menite Faith.

Uses his deduction and tracking to solve crimes / issues the church faces. Current mission is to solve a string of murders against the clergy.

In the employ of a Scutator whose actually a massive cockend and continually keeps sending him on fool errands to test faith.

Uses a sharp-shooters rifle and preaches as he fights reciting parts of what little sermons I could find throughout the lore (have them on flash cards). Has joined the current party because I plan to have him grow weary of all the murders / combat / political-religious shit with the protectorate and have a crisis of faith thereby bouncing between the two.

Will probably get wracked in the end.

Former character:

My last character was a Trollkin gravedigger who'd become a dock-worker. Literally was roped into the party by a Nyssian archaeologist as they set off to explore some unknown Island believed to house orgoth ruins. In the end he had to take a leave of the group because he'd wracked up so many injuries it was nearly unplayable.

From East-London dives to vocanic supervillain lairs, Matteo was THE guy to tend bar anywhere where discretion was paramount. Over the years, he saw a lot of villains at their most vulnerable and earnest, gaining an appreciation for how life worked for people who had chosen the darker paths in life.

Eventually, he was put into a position where he had to make that choice himself. Shot during a police raid on the base he was working at, he decided that if he was going to go out, he was drinking the most expensive shit on the top shelf. In this instance, it happened to be a gourd of ancient rice wine belonging to one of the fabled drunken masters.

Now restored to life, but physically dependent on alchohol to keep him functional (and keep the cumulative hangover at bay), he uses his enhanced reflexes and emerging talents for drunken boxing to raid bases, make money and pay off the debt to the shadowy agency that has him in their pocket.

Last seen in Johannesburg, investigating a string of political assassinations linked to the alien ghetto and the Astro-Dineyland park that lies in its center.

I have a few:
-Redward is the son of an adventurer and his widow, who spent most of his life in the city of Crowfall after his mother married a high ranking halfling member of the Cooks' Guild. The Cooks' Guild became local superpower after they gained control of the rations during an orcish siege. Although no crimes have officially been committed, nobles who attempt to shift the power back into there favor often choke to death on cake. Redward grew up seperate from the guilds criminal dealings, but he still inherited a love of cooking from his many halfling uncles. Now that he's older, he desires to walk in the footsteps of his father, while apeasing his stepdad by honing his skills as a chef along the way.
-Daryle Chanials was born a tiefling on a caravan of nomads and refugees from dozens of races. When he was fairly young, the caravan stoped at a city in order to sell their wares. Daryle would often bet that anyone who could beat him in a musical contest would win a gilded fiddle-a family heirloom. The game was rigged of course, he would use bardic magic to influence the results, but he never took more than a few pieces of gold from the loser. He got most of his money from locals who enjoyed the performance. But one day a traveling bard named Johnathan beat him so badly with his own magic that everyone in the town simply ignored his music. Taking the fiddle as a reward, Daryle never saw Johnathan again. Not one to except results, Daryle is on a journey to get his fiddle back.

I like the meta-backstories. One I usually go with is
"Crazy Jeff is a rural hermit, he keeps to himself and doesn't try to cause trouble. No one really knows where he gets his income, and he's not telling. Where he got his nickname is apparent as soon as you spend at least five minutes with him.

See, Crazy Jeff is crazy, but not in the "normal" crazy way. Crazy Jeff thinks he is in some crazy game being played by the gods for their amusement. He'll even go into odd phases, spouting nonesense words and almost worshipping a small set of well-worn dice.

He's always talking about "feats" and "classes." He can be seen praying to a gee-ehm that acts like a creator and arbiter of rules. Whenever he travels anywhere, he is constantly looking for "random encounters." Inevitably, whenever he comes across someone on these travels, he shouts for them to "roll initiative."

At nights, he can be heard muttering about elves and dwarves, recharging his spells, and other inane bullshit."

That's the backstory of Greggory Samson, Private Investigator in my Call of Cthulhu game.

A young, deformed, magically gifted three eyed child in the Levant had a dream one night. He dreamt that he and his sister were cast aside from their village and doomed to roam the Earth for perpetuity, while being whispered by a demented voice. His village was sacked by zealots of Canaan and almost his entire family was killed in sickly fire. When escaping his burning house, a piece of burning debris fell onto him and paralyzed him from the waist down. A voiceless spirit came to him and helped carry him out.

He crawled out and saw his sister, who had survived the attack as well. The two then set out across the lands of the Fertile Crescent, reflecting on himself, and why he was attacked. He never went to the city before he was twelve, but he remembers going out in the hills every year with his father and mother to go hunting. When he turned twelve his parents told him he wasn't going to get the farm and they need more food to feed the younger kids, and Ilyumar could either stay in town and work, or go to Auntie Maro in the Big City. Ilyumar tried a few days to find work, but nobody would pay him well enough to eat as well as his parents had fed him, so he want ot Auntie Maro.

Her husband, Uncle Olba, was a small time gangster, and was feeling listless till the day Ily showed up because he had no kids. Olba grew in a huge family with 11 siblings, and they'd all passed away, and they'd left no kids Olba could find, and he and Maro couldn't make kids. The only family he had was his cousing Albo out in the country, When Ily showed up Olba was so happy he even took on a real job along with his gang activities to feed and clothe his new "son." Maro was annoyed she had to care for the boy at first, but when Ily sang some songs his father had taught him on hunting trips, and proved to be too tough for the local street kids she took a liking to him too.

Ever since then Ilyumar has been respected as a gangster, but he's getting worried about the bosses he works for getting too connected with some foreigners. There used to be hard times in the city, but nothing like what these foreign bosses are bringing in. They're trying to take over all the citygangs, and even the Elected Princes Throne. Now he's looking for some out-of-towners, and a couple old friends to help set things right

He's just a simple guy really. Parents died when he was young. Grew up with his grandparents, helping out around their farm outside a small town.
Had little in the way of friends as a child, so had a somewhat stunted social development. His grandmother and the church taught him the value of charity and compassion.
Now that his grandparents have passed on, he is travelling the land to help as many people as possible and trying to be a great knight like the ones from the stories.

Basically, he's an idiot manchild with a heart of gold.

My favorite backstory was edgy but I loved playing the character.

>tiefling girl
>outcast in her village cuz A) weird looking and B) demonic urges like hunting and mutilating, which she kept limited to animals, though the temptation was there
>demon father takes interest as things go down hill for her at home, tells her that humans are pathetic prey beasts and that she should be the predator she was destined to be
>trained to be a marauder in his service, does the antipaladin gig for a while, pretty good at it, makes some friends among the marauders
>reality check when she's face to face with a tiefling disciple of Sarenrae she's there to murder/loot/rape
>spares and kidnaps the disciple, slowly decides to leave her father's service after listening to her new friend a while
>father reacts predictably poorly, one of her friends sorta helps her escape by virtue of being unwilling to murder their marauder pal
>our girl goes into hiding while her friend goes to a convent, see each other periodically
>just does odd jobs a few decades
>spends hella time to drunk and high and partying to distract herself from ongoing demonic desires
>hear tell of some bad shit with cultists
>hear tell an old marauder pal might be involved
>fuck we gotta save him
>nobody to help but a weird old man
>he's a cooky old paladin
>rescue marauder pal, paladin dies, our protagonist is inspired by him
>decides to adopt paladin code, very strict, so as to not give herself any leeway slip into her demonic tendencies, still parties it up and gets drunk and high a lot to distract herself
>oh fuck, been shanghaied by pirates
>Skulls_and_Shackles.jpg

Lowkey my magic realm but it never really affected the game, and the character was a fun, chill lady to play, who felt burdened by some intense guilt, and acted like a fucking loon in combat as she gave in to her demonic bloodlust. Carefully did exclusively nonlethal damage so as to not overly tempt herself.

No, she's a moralfag and if the DM is any good at plot hooks, she'll stick with the party to protect the world from the larger evil.
She just wants to make sure her sister is safe as well.

I said "trying" to be one. He doesn't have any of it yet, he's using farming tools as weapons and wearing his grandfather's ill-fitting armour from when he was conscripted into a previous war.

As for skill, that's something he'll pick up as he goes along.

He is Lucius Quader, third child of Baron Quader of Ambergrove second cousin twice removed to the Emperor himself. His prefered weapon is an expensive enchanted mace he has only recently began to learn how to use initially choosing it because it looked like effective and simple. His personality is like that of a slightly paranoid more merchantile Zapp Brannigan who is hellbent on starting his own merchant empire.

He is my character in my GM's homebrew rpg+setting. The empire he hails from is currently in decline with a large area to the south of it, known as the Free Cities, being on the rise partly due to the Empire severely limiting the usage/knowledge of the setting's source of magic. Lucius is a garbage noble as not only is he not likely to inherit any of his parents wealth, being the third in line, but also Ambergrove is barely big or important enough to have nobility in the first place. While he could have stayed and lived out a relatively comfortable life he saw no potential for glory or schmoozing with the rich and powerful so he chose to leave it in an attempt to make his own empire in the Free Cities. Given his family's lack of expendable funds for what was seen as a flight of fancy the evening Lucius set out on his journey he broke into and stole a good sum of money from the carriage of another noble from a rival family who was staying in Ambergrove and attempting the same quest Lucious was setting out on. The rival noble he stole from is likely a mere few days away from showing-up in the Free Cities given Lucious arrived 2 or 3 weeks ago.

So far he has done a few odd jobs, earned a good reputation with a regional caravan company, become an associate of a pirate captain and an enchanter, helped a magically gifted young noble flee the Empire and avoid being cloistered in a strict mage academy, acquired two large crates of clothing textiles to start a clothing business, and hired a gunman (other PC) as his #1 employee.

Kolya the Witness. Human Sorcerer. Brass Draconic Ancestry.

Kolya remembers little of his early child. Only that there was fire. There was always the fire.
Never knowing his true family, Kolya was raised by a traveling troupe of clerics and missionaries of Pelor. TravelingThe hinterlands, Kolya dazzled commonfolk and farmers with his command of flame and light all in the Name of Pelor. Or so he thought. When the farmers would reject him and his entourage, Kolya was encouraged to torch their fields, burn their homes and even execute them as heretics. This continued for many years until Kolya began to question his Masters methods and accused them of straying from Pelor's holy purpose. Overhearing conversations in the night, Kolya learned his covenant were little more than bandits, manipulating his powers for personal gain and greed. Lashing out, Kolya tried to overthrow his yolk but was left beaten and bloodied within an inch of his life. Disillusioned, confused, guilt-ridden: Kolya wandered for many months without purpose, finally ending with the decision to take his own life. As he slipped the noose around his neck, a voice rang Out crying "Halt my child, I am not finished with you yet." Pelor's voice ringing in his ears, Kolya rose to meet the world again in atonement. But the question remained, could he truly find redemption for his past deeds of wickedness? And where do his powers truly come from?

Hunter didn't have a happy life. He was the last born child and only son to the Farmsworth family. He live in a house hold where almost everyone was angry. His father was an angry old man with no friends, his sisters were cruel to each other and his grandfather was hellbent on making sure that none of his siblings would inherit the farm. His childhood ended for him when a fairly close neighbor molested him.

When he entered his teenage years he turned to the church. He wanted to just get away from his home life but while running an errand for a priest he broke a valuable statue. The church began to resent him for his desecration but Hunter still tried his best to continue to serve the church and make amends. A couple years after the incident, Hunter was cleaning a stumbled upon a cult that wanted to abuse the church extort money and gain militant fanatics. He went to the authorities and helped expose and overthrow the cult. With that, most had forgiven Hunter for his mistake and some even proclaimed that he was a hero.

As he entered his adulthood, Hunter wanted to be apart of the government and make sure that the corruption he faced would never happen...unfortunately through a series of misunderstandings he ended up in the military. Where he served under General Darcel Stormborn who shared his ideal of eliminating corruption. He followed Stormborn to hell and back as he rallied an army to dethrone the government and rebuild it into a just institution.

Stormborn was ready to make his move against the King but the army of the kingdom anticipated him. The King's men slaughtered Darcel's army and Hunter found himself trampled by an enemy horse as he saw the army slaughtered mercilessly. He prayed to Pelor then Illmator and finally he prayed to Asmodeous the King of Hell. The demon had answered his plea to rescue him from his impending doom and he was gifted with the powers of the arcane but it came with a cost. Hunter now has a list of favors to a demon.
>>
>>50386183
Lots going on in this back story and unfortunately, not much of it is connected. Why is his family angry? Leaving his family and his molestation never plays a role later on in the story.
Much of the church part of the back story is unneccessary. A problem occurs that is solved with no lasting impact. The breaking of the statue plays no real role in anything. He could have simply swelled in ranks in the church and helped purged cults and corruption. Same ending effect but with a stronger basis in the church. Finally, why would he jump from praying to a NG god to an NE god? Are these the only gods in your campaign? Why not beseech other gods first. I think this backstory needs to be toned back in intensity a bit or have it's intensity carry more weight.

>Lots going on in this back story and unfortunately, not much of it is connected.
DM wanted us to use random backstory thing so it was kinda messy. It was an attempt to make some coherency out. I think I accidentalyl deleted aline because of a text limit which was he went through a handful of names and in his pain and desperation he jumped to Asmodeus.

But the criticism was immensely helpful. So thank you.
>>
>>50386366
No problem.

Don't want to steal your thunder on this story but here's one way you could do it.
>make family "deeply religious of Pelor" yet still be the same assholes
>Hunter interested in the church still but not convinced by their followers
>leave family go to church of Pelor
>priests not much better but a few are
>Learns churches power are vastly overstated
>Its okay they still help people
>expose cult of Asmodeus and defeat them, but witness real power of demons manifested in them
>Go to government to try and stifle them further.
>Soldier battling against hell.
>More impressed by demon's magic than Pelors.
>Same ending that you have.

Try and work in a reason why he would beseech Asmodeus. You could have him torn by what Pelor stands for, but still amazed and tempted by the real power displayed by Asmodeus. And now he has a moral dilemna of what to do with his powers as he grows stronger.

Cadmus was a half-orc foundling to an out of the way monastery of the Goddess of War.

Before being fully inducted into Her Priesthood, the entire population of the monastery disappeared, (raptured, minus leaving the clothes behind) while Cadmus was in town getting supplies.

In the following week, Cadmus helped defend the town from bandits, 7 samurai style. Seemingly blessed by Her Virgin Wrath with clerical powers, he inducted himself into Her Priesthood, made his way to the capital to help with the war effort, and has been doing the bidding of Her Church ever since.

His eventual goal is to earn enough coin doing mercenary work to remake his monastery. He tends to try to do things "Da Orky Way", which he read about once in a book.

>inb4 edgy orphan backstory

I just said they disappeared, I never said where they went. All Cadmus knows is that there was no blood, no signs of struggle, no bodies, and everything left like it was just a normal afternoon. If the DM decides to run with either that, the unknown parentage, or just ignore my backstory, I'll oblige.

Before I begin I feel I must stress my GM encouraged me to play a deliberately over the top Mary-sue (he'll probably see this post)

Twilight is a Kitsune sorceress who spends most of her time halfway between forms (humanoid with fox ears and a fox tail). Her powers and spells comes from her Sylvan bloodline, but she delusionally believes that her magic comes from "the power of friendship", and that the two are directly proportional (I.e. That the more love and friendship she feels towards other people the more powerful she becomes)
She is typically accompanied by her faithful animal companion, the gryphon known as Luna, whom she rides, flying above the battlefield, dropping magic down on those who refuse to listen to her attempts to make friends.

The father of the character was the brother of the current family patron. He spent his days drinking and banging hookers. One night however he gets a small package: a half-elf baby that is his. The mother herself is nowhere to be found. The father being too busy spending the family fortune neglects the child and basically demotes him to a servant. Once my character reached adulthood he yelled the father down and took his rightful place in the family while always holding a grudge against the aloof father of his. The character now has a family, a wife and two daughters, and is a mostly respected member of a merchant family. He also fishes, is a top notch blacksmith and a steroid addict who sprung wings one night.

Nala, the Endbringer, Incarnate of Evil.

Born a simple village girl, trying to become a militia-woman when she grew up, Nala was truly born when the nearby wizard, a foolish and senile old man, tried using a powerful spell and botched it up.

The Abyss tore open, a major breach between planes, and darkness spread. Demons of many kinds, desperate for mortals to hunt, came pouring forth. Nala watched as demons butchered her family, her friends, even complete strangers. Mocked and jeered at by the surrounding demons as they savored her for last, she found herself filling with rage. She found a dropped sword, many times too large for her, and finding herself filled with rage and a desire to kill everything that befell her sight, she found that her pure and utter desire toward destruction held a power all its own.

When the kingdom's army arrived, and the wizards closed the portal, sending the demons back from whence they came, they found Nala among the wreckage, red sparking light dancing along her brow and a large, abyss-forged fullblade sitting at her side... Atop a pile of bodies- demonic, human, even the arriving army's scouts- all slain by her hand.

She was laughing.

I'm like 90% sure it's shit, backstories are my weak point, I need to write more, but here's my last runner:

Very much a "rebel" girl when she was 'younger' (she's just 22), she dyed her hair, attempted to pick fights she had absolutely no chance of winning, went against "the man" and such, mostly to ignore her shitty living situation still living with her mother, and having both of her brothers actually having made it into Lonestar despite being Sinless (and getting a SIN from it)

Eventually, she actually managed to midly annoy the wrong people (read: the mob) and got the shit beat out of her, and held where she was being considered for forcing her into being a drug runner/other forced labor.

One of her brothers figured out what happened, and paid a group of (not great) shadowrunners to spring her, which ended up causing a bit of a mess and she killed 1 of them with their own gun. which she kept. During this, she thought it was basically her lifes calling, even the rather nastier parts of it.

She signed up with the group that sprung her, did some jobs here and there, then moved when she started pissing off lone star/other corps and her brothers couldn't shield her from it much.

She since has joined a new group, pretends to be more experienced than she is (which can lead to awkwardness around areas of the job she's unfamiliar with) and has her composure shattered a bit more easily than most runners, but is more than willing to do quite a lot of nasty shit reqiuired for jobs, which has the benefit of johnsons more willing to go to her rather than "better" runner groups with a more rigid moral compass.

Any suggested edits? If it's shit it's shit, but tell me why please.

Back stories should be like introductions, the stuuf that might actually come up in that first conversation pcs would have when they first meet up+ maybe some info they could have found out from reputations.

I got kind of a blank story for a character in reserve for a game we're currently playing

Solomon, who was raised by a church (think catholic) who worship Bhaal. The church collects, archives and protects artifacts of death, and when out on the trail of a new one that appeared, (basically a power gauntlet that fired instantkill lasers) the church found him hiding in his home after his parents had been lasered to death. He went with them and was raised by them, and due to the churrch's strict code at 12 he had to choose whether to go into training as an assassin for the church and be useful or be kicked out (after which he would've been killed by the church for knowing its location, not that he knew that at the time) but everyone he ever knew, cruel as they were, were a part of the church, so he underwent their training and came out on the other side as a church assassin (Think Anderson from hellsing but more professional, about the same zealotry though). During the current setting an extradimensional entity has taken the attention of the gods, and the apocalypse cult followers of this weird god-killer steal seven of the major artifacts from the church, as such church assassin has to go and recover them (they also specialise in reconnaissance and kidnapping, for all your sneaky sneak needs) and along the way he finds the party, who are looking to try and kill the extradimensional entity and are gathering allies. After a little thinking he realises that the best chance of finding the apocalypse cults and by extension the artifacts, would be to go with them. I've tied it in to my previous character by having the artifact of wrath (yes seven deadly sins theming, whatever, it's a good motif) is a book in the possession of my current character which gives the wielder enormous power, knowledge and intelligence, at the cost of your soul gets sucked into the book to add to the knowledge, power and intelligence to it when you die, making it in theory infinitely powerful.

>Seriously why should players know more than their characters could possibly know about some guy they just met?

But we aren't your group's players.
I agree that personality should be shown, not read. However, writing it down in order to avoid going against the character would be very helpful to avoid breaking character with decisions that would not be logical for the character to take.

If your character developed his brashness in his youth, he wouldn't calmly wait for the party to finish discussing tactics with whatever allies they have. They would urge the team to finish up talking so that they can go and do stuff instead of giving air to their mouths.

Or if the character distrusts strangers because he was taught that strangers should not be trusted -maybe also because of past bad experiences- and as such he now does not want to help the person the rest of the party just met, who asked them for help.

It would be against the personality of the character to do anything else, if he immediately wanted to help the guy or do anything else that goes against his acquired traits.

An old tiefling woman who continues to practice theatre and storytelling after settling down in a dinky (mainly human) village. She's undoubtedly not the most trusted person there, but after many years the townsfolk tolerate her as one of their own. As the eccentric storyteller, an unofficial town attraction and occasional boogeyman for misbehaving kids, but tolerated regardless.

She has a wizard son who drops by every couple of months, sometimes with his wife and kid. Naturally spoils them, especially the grandchild, with knick knacks from old adventuring days.

One day, she finds out she's running low on knick knacks. So she decides to adventure again in order to properly inundate her family with gifts.

She has a pseudodragon pet that has her wrapped around its finger.

Alston Nackle was a simple potter living a simple life. There had been a series of "attacks" around his village, mostly harmless, where a few things had gotten broken and a few items and some food had gone missing.
One day while gardening, Alston heard some children screaming and saw them being attacked by a monster. Deciding the children wouldn't be the next thing to go missing, Alston placed an iron pot on his head for protection
and grabbed his shovel (both of those are included in the Folk Hero background, so I thought it'd be fun to work them into the story) and slew the beast. On that day, Alston became known as Ironhead Alston Nackle.
Soon after, the village held a banquet in his honor. To Alston's surprise, they had all pooled their resources to buy him a pack of adventuring gear so he could "claim his destiny".
Alston had never wanted to be a hero, but who could refuse? So he took up the weapons and armor and set out into a world much larger than he is.

Once upon a time there was a young kobold who wanted to be a barbarian. The son of a prominent kobold crime family (As few can smuggle better than the ones who live under the city) he had grown up watching the pit fights and underground arenas his family frequented and idolized the brutality and power of the fighters there. Of course aware of the natural shortcomings of their species, especially in regards to brute force his parents attempted to dissuade him. However this young kobold was not very intelligent, and decided that this meant he could never be a barbarian. His hours of training, the animalistic furies he flew into, the copious painful tattoos, they were all for naught.
However, in his misery an uncommon spark of determination sprung up within this kobold. If he could not be a barbarian by virtue of his race, then he would endeavor until the day the gods of barbarians everywhere would grant him audience, and admit him to their secret brotherhood of fighting that he was certain exists, no really his cousin told him all about it.
Sadly, he has not managed to understand the fact that he is by any sane person's definition a consummate barbarian. Such is his struggle.

This is what happens when I decide I want to play a kobold and then roll 18 strength and 6 int.

Ed "Irons" McLaughlin, is a bastard, and not just in the biblical sense, shucked out of his Noble Father's house with his Ma, and half-sister, he spent his time roaming the streets as a youth, always looking to make a dime, most people who know 'em call him a prick, Ol' Ed don't care, he just wants to survive, and since his mom died and he's been taking care of his sister, Ed seems to be doing just that, working as a thug for criminal elements Ed's been earning his living with the only thing given to him in this world, his two fists, and a will of iron,

Mind you now that his sister is older Ed's just trying to make sure she can have a respectable job, hence why he pays for her apprenticeship to a smith of some renown, might be better off if she just forgets Ed though, best that everyone Ed put the hurt on push him out of their minds since he took of to go adventuring.

He's a ton of fun to play as well. We're running Base Raiders with him, a heroine who's technically a corpse infested with a parasitic organism, an ice god trapped inside an IT nerd's body and an old Soviet robot/shoggoth that recently had its consciousness transferred into a pod-grown body. The old body then burrowed into a wall and is probably doing horrible Lovecraftian things somewhere. No way that's gonna bit us in the ass later.

No siree bob.

Kinda surprised we're doing so well, since /tg/ apparently has this utter hatred for FATE-based games.

Don't think so. I imagined him being a cheerful and forgiving person who knows that it is human to make mistakes. As long as you would work to improve yourself and lives of those around your PC, he'd be cool.
