I'm personally a big fan of the Paragon system from Worlds of Power.

Most specifically, because you get 'paragon bonus' as you level, which is just 'plus this to most things'

Saves, attacks, damage, etc.

Much simpler than paizo's thing of like, attunement and such.

Relationships in Jade Regent are advanced through leveling up and completing secret objectives, but the most reliable way is giving gifts.

Gift-giving is a complicated affair in Jade Regent, for starters it can only be done once a level. It also requires two things, a good gift and a Diplomacy roll that exceeds your current Relationship score with the character. Exceed the score by more than 5 and you double the addition to your Relationship score.

For example, let's say my character has a Relationship Score of 12 with Shalelu. If I give her a longbow, I need to beat a DC 12 if I want to get +1 to my score, or beat a DC 17 if I want to get a +2 to my score.

This might not sound too bad until you consider the Romance Scores (the minimum required to start a "romantic" relationship) are typically in the 30s, meaning a character must beat a DC 40 if they want to make Ameiko their waifu.

HOWEVER

Everyone is forgetting there is ANOTHER aspect of the Relationship system; Rivalry. This system works on Intimidation, not Diplomacy, and assumes the character gives the NPC something they hate. A high Rivalry gives bonuses just as well as a high Relationship, and you can literally start a sexual relationship with a character you're Rivals too. Literally hatefucking.

Krugen Moores was originally the son of a power and affluent family in Kaer Maga, and enjoyed the easy life that came with that. As a young man he often went out among the people, essentially one of those young punks who just wanted a taste of danger. This lead him mainly to associate with the miners that worked the same mines that his family owned. One day he was sent to inspect a copper mine his family owned, and while inside the mine collapsed for unknown reasons. For the next six weeks he spent his time in total darkness.

A secret of his is that there is a very high possibility he is not entirely dwarven in ancestry. This is the reason for his unusual height and lack of dark vision. In the darkness he was forced to eat the bodies of miners who had been crushed to survive, and on the second day he realized he was not alone. Something else was in the cavern with him. For weeks he was forced to hide, squeeze into crevices, and pray it did not find him. Then in the fifth week, on the banks of an underground lake, came a fateful confrontation with the creature. Krugen strangled it to death and let it sink into the lake. To his horror what ever it was felt suspiciously humanoid and suspiciously like a dwarf. He does not remember what happened from that point, and next thing he remembers is waking up in a prison cell.

By this point he already had the Fiend's Grip, his hands twisted and scarred. What ever he had encountered in the dark had marked him. This is also when he gained his inquisitorial powers Has the Occult Bargain drawback. What ever was in the dark is what amounts to his patron.

From this point he was tried and exiled, his family's influence enough that he did not find his way to the chopping block. Instead he was whipped, his arms and shoulders mutilated, and an enormous brand placed into the center of his back to mark him.

That was 50 years ago. From that point onwards he became a Caravaneer, following a circuit that takes goods from the Kaer Maga region to the Maginmar region along the Yondabakari river I have mapped out the exact route and have some details on what he trades in. Despite his exile he still understands more about dwarven culture than most humans who do business, and his classical upbringing has made him a competent and guileful negotiator.

During this last 50 years he has been listless, leaving the country for years at a time to try and seek a way to be rid of his hands, but to not avail, and always returning to his homeland. Sandpoint is a town he has watched grow and on his circuit stays there for about a week every three months.

The CG Sorcerer tried to kill the LG Paladin of Iomedae. Because the Sorcerer said the Paladin was evil, no one else agreed, he just decided it and then acted on it.

This wasn't a secret character thing between him and the DM, because I am the DM. The rest of the party are pretty great. The Rogue is slowly becoming more LG, the Mesmerist is learning the true value of friendship. And the Swashbuckler is confused in how war works so is learning from first hand experience.

Whoever gets to them first, starts the relationship first, and the other players are just shit outta luck unless the DM houserules the girl is fine with a little double-action.

You can break up with a character and it won't lower your Relationship score, but any future attempts to re-enter a relationship will add +5 to the DC check.

The thing about Jade Regent that a lot of people think of when you refer to the campaign isn't the caravan system, the Crown of the World, or even Sandpoint in general. It's that you go to Not!Asia and deal with politics there, and there's ninjas.

Weeb is pretty common for this sort of game. It's not even necessarily a bad thing.

Honestly when I think Weeb games the first thing that comes to mind is L5R and how autistic the politics get there. I always played a courtier and ended up being one of the few competent people in the party at court because everyone else built combat monsters.

It made me even more mad that other players don't understand how one's mentality is supposed to be for most L5R characters. It ends up being they play them like D&D characters, which is possible, but far outside the norm for Samurai.

The order should be:
Clan > Empire > Honor > Life

Sometimes switching one's personal honor and the safety of the empire. However if a Samurai holds his life in higher regard than his honor then he can go fucking jack off to gaijin and have the kami inflame his gonads.
