The group struggling with a corridor of pressure plate traps/puzzle. Thy never did solve the trick to it but they came up with creative ways of getting past the corridor. Quite simple but it was a delight to see them get worked up about it.

Also as it dawns on them what the room full of statues actually might signify.. Simple little things that's so rewarding just watching them squirm. Most of them have not played much RPGs befor so it's fun just watching them take it all in and get lost in experience and having their characters react to things.

Oh and that player who has a character actually collecting cursed items.. Which he some times whispers and talks to.. That gnome has some serious emotional problems (barbarian, or rather a shoe-maker with an impulse control problem).

Alright, /5eg/. In five words or less, what's a good hexcrawl encounter?
>>
I need some advice. My character is a level 3 wizard with 13 con and 16 int. At level 4, should I pick Resilient (con) now and bump up int at levels 8 and 12, or should I focus getting my int up ASAP and saving Resilient (con) for level 12?

Some homebrew for you, 5eg.
>>
So, I wish to DM a campaign soon. I like the idea of using models, and have a pretty vast Warhammer Beastmen army to draw enemies from. Are there any good stats for D&D beastmen enemies, or if not, a good statblock to just attach to the model?
>>
>>50309539
Rule of thumb: always bump your attacking/spellcasting stat until you hit 20. Taking feats can wait.
>>
So I started playing with a new group and the DM doesn't really have all the rules down. Mostly he's been referencing stuff from when he ran 3.5 edition campaigns, like 5 foot step and the like. What's the best and most accurate cheatsheet that I can get for him so I'm not always reminding him of the rules and how they apply?
>>
>>50309252
>party decides to take out a vampire, heads into her decrepit tower
>after she grapples the fighter and bites him once, the polar bear/druid grapples and drags her into sunlight, though she eventually breaks free
>use their Horn of Blasting to damage both her and the tower wall behind her
>gnome wizard polymorphs into a huge giant ape and pummels down the wall, letting the light shine upon the whole room
>after she drops to 0 and Misty Escape kicks in, the mist has to go back to her coffin, where she reverts back but is paralyzed
>everyone joins forces to push her coffin into the sunlight, as her eyes desperately dart around and her mouth opens, a mute scream never to be heard

Shit was awesome, yo.
>>
>>50309252
Party decides to camp out above the crypt they were raiding. Some of the bandits held up inside come out to stab them in their sleep, fail.

Just before sunrise, screams come from inside the tomb. A feral vampire runs out, scares the hell out of them, then steps into the sunlight and explodes.

They failed to identify the vampire in or out of character, hilarity ensues.

Holy mother of options, Batman.
I get the appeal giving the player a lot of freedom to choose, but my god those archetypes are overloaded.
>>
>>50309653
The actual rules of the game are like, 30 pages, 40 for the specific spellcasting rules. If he's not willing to spend the 30 minutes max needed to read those, he's not a good DM, period.

>>50309582

>>50309539
You should pick whatever suits the characters development at the time. Ask your GM what for some input. 5e is not about min-maxing anything. It's not a boardgame, it's a RPG.

The party tries to get help with an orc army and instead gets a sidequest.
The party moves to clear a farm of zombies and immediately splits into four groups and alerts five groups of zombies.
Nobody takes more than a tiny scratch, but dear god we'd have been fucked if these things had been an actual threat.
My int14cha10 rogue gives an angry lecture on teamwork and nominates himself battle leader. No objections are raised.
We fight a muckthing in a decaying watermill. The monk risks his life to rescue a corpse and pockets the coinpouch. We OOCly let it slide because the GM screwed him on money.
The session ends as we begin laying plans to clear out the farmhouse.

A big arc of the campaign ended last night and the players thwarted two different enemy faction plots in the same encounter. They got into an encounter with the king of Karrnath and his necromancer advisor who are both vampires in Eberron canon and party figured it out in-character and revealed the man using the Wand of Orcus to control the king and his advisor before causing major damage to either of them. They then got to fight 2 high-powered minions of the Lord of Blades who were also plotting to get the Wand of Orcus and stopped them due to having the king's assistance, since his custom legendary and lair actions were built to make him warlord-like. Now they get to figure out what to do about the Wand of Orcus.

>surprisingly, the barb and druid manage to kill one Rex themselves, the other, badly wounded, drags its dead mate back to their nest to mourn... while the three guys in the raptor nest get their asses kicked by pack tactics

>clear the temple, one guy has made it his goal to tame a quetzalcoatlus as a mount, and this time he has the druid who can speak to animals for help- they convince the quetzalcoatlus to let him on, but as it takes off he spectacularly fails an animal handling roll and falls thirty feet

Kingdoms don't have alignments. But its inhabitant would have lawful neutral/evil tendencies, going toward evil if they're cruel in their takeover

One of my players weebed it up and describes it as stretchy limbs. His searing sun burst is him enlarging his foot and stomping onto the area he's hitting.

Are my stats playing a barbarian half-orc.

Considering 1's in a stat are near useless in 5e should I just go

16 str, 14 dex, 12 con, 10 int, 5 cha, 10 wis? Post +2 str and +1 con of course.

I get higher Ac than just putting 14 in con and 11 in dex of course i lose out on that 1hp

Hey /tg/ I'm pretty stumped on how to design good dungeons (aside from coming up what it's there for).
I've tried the "5 room model" before and it works fairly well for something quick and snappy to throw into a session, but it's terrible for an actual dungeon to explore.

So now I'm sitting here with the layout, monsters, and loot that I want to be in there, but I have absolutely no Idea what else to put in there.

Traps? It doesn't make sense that there are any.
Puzzles? I had mostly bad experiences with them, so I don't use them anymore.
What I want is there to be choice for the party with some consequences for the further dungeon experience, but I don't know where to start.

Is there any rule of thumb for these sorts of things?

It's a partially flooded old temple in ruins thats deep underwater, and it's used by a sea hag to corrupt villagers and meerfolk with a mcguffin in it. If that helps.

If it's a partially flooded temple, why aren't there some traps in the dry areas where Merfolk would have little reason to go. If there's a room that's mainly useful for catching your breath after diving along a hallway, that's a prime spot to put a trap.

Likewise, a room rigged to flood would be a similar posibility, as that would handily deal with any surface dwellers while not affecting the merfolk if they accidentally trigger it.

Put traps in areas that are low-traffic, or high importance.
>>
>>50311456

Why doesn't it makes sense that there is traps?

A sea hag would probably love to see people die/suffer because of her tricks or weird magic she cooked up.

Started posting it at the start of last thread, but here is an idea I had when Anon asked how to get light in the Underdark.

[1/4]

>Kobold Candlemaster

>"Light be bad... but Surfacers needs it, and so it's power for us. And power be good."

> Small humanoid (kobold), lawful evil
>Armor Class 12
>Hit Points 13 (3d6 + 3) Speed 30 ft.

STR 7 (-2) DEX 15 (+2) CON 12 (+1) INT 8 (-1) WIS 7 (-2) CHA 8 (-1)

>Senses darkvision 60 ft., passive Perception 10
>Languages Common, Draconic

>Skills Perception +0

>Challenge 1/4 (50 XP)

>Pack Tactics.
The kobold has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the kobold's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

>Sunlight Sensitivity.
While in sunlight, the kobold has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

ACTIONS
>Dagger. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (ld4 + 2) piercing damage.

>Sling. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (ld4 + 2) bludgeoning damage.

>>
>>50311956
[2/4]

>Torch: Melee Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 4 (ld4 + 2) bludgeoning damage + 1 fire damage

>Candle mastery:
The kobold uses one of the following options (roll a d8 or choose one); the kobold can use each one no more than once per day:

>1. Oil.
The kobold hurls a flask of Oil. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 20/60 ft. On a hit, the target is covered in oil. If the target takes any fire damage before the oil dries (after 1 minute), the target takes an additional 5 fire damage from the burning oil. The kobold can also pour a flask of oi!lon the ground to cover a 5-foot-square area, provided that the surface is leveI. If lit. the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 5 tire damage to any creature that enters the area ar ends its turn in the area, A creature can take this damage only once per turn

> 2. Alchemist's Fire.
The kobold throws a flask of alchemist's fire. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 5/20 ft., one target. Hit: 2 (1 d4) fire damage at the start of each of the target's turns. A creature can end this damage by using its action to make a DC 10 Dexterity check to extinguish the flames.

>3. Basket of Glow Worms.
The kobold throws a small basket into a 5-foot-square space within 20 feet of it. A swarm of insects (glow worms) with 11 hit points emerges from the basket and rolls initiative. At the end of each of the swarm's turns, there's a 50 percent chance that the swarm disperses. As long as the swarm doesn't disperse, they emit a light equivalent to the one of a torch.
>>

>4. Spiked Lantern
The kobold hurls a burning lantern, specifically designed to hurt in those case. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 5/20 ft., one target. Hit: 2 (1d4) piercing damage + 3 (1d4) fire damage.

>5. Frigid Blue Crystal

Among the strange territories of the Underdark, it is not always wise to rely on heat sources to see. Kobold Candelmasters use those cold blue crystals, found in dark caves where Brown Moss abounds, as alternative and sometime as emergency weapons. Although they lose their power quickly when in contact with heat source. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 5/20 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d6) cold damage.

When not used as a weapon, or for one turn after being used as one, the frigid blue crystal glows like a candle.

>6. Failed Alchemist's Fire

Testament of the kobold's bumbling training in alchemy, this disgusting brew is the mix of their failed attempts at creating Alchemist's Fire. While it would seem logical to simply throw it away, the travelers in the Underdark are often too low on ressources to allow themselves this luxury. And, after all, they do throw it away, after a fashion.

Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 5/20 ft., one target. If hit,he target must make a DC 9 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target retches and can't take actions for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. A creature that doesn't need to breathe or is immune to poison automatically succeeds on the saving throw.

>7. Midnight Oil

The Candlemaster adds a special kind of oil to one of their lanterns. A cloud of thick smoke pours out in a 60-foot radius from the lantern. The cloud's area is heavily obscured. Last one minute. Creatures with unprotected eyes within the radius must make a Constitution save DC 15 or be blinded for 1 minute. If they exit the radius, they can do a saving throw at the end of each of their turn,

*turn, the effect ending on a success

>8. Flint & Sunsteel

The Candlemaster uses a special flint & steel. Creates an intense flash of light on a 60 ft radius Each creature in that light must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 7 (2d6) radiant damage and is blinded for 1 minute. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn't blinded. Undead, oozes and creature with Sunlight Sensitivity have disadvantage on this saving throw. A creature blinded by this action makes another Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns. On a successful save, it is no longer blinded.

The lands underneath the surface is a world where light is scarce. And what is scarce and needed is valuable. Maybe it is in basic greed that the existence of the strange kobold sect of the Candlemasters is born. Perhaps is it an expression of a faded memory of their supposed draconic nature. Or perhaps it is a sign of manipulation by a more obscure power. But the Candlemasters care little for their origins.

Sometime, a kobold find themself thinking of something more than work, traps and the community. And sometime those thinkers will find the path of the Candlemaster. Taught their trades by higher-ranking members called Flintmasters, the Candlemasters are the apprentices and disciples of a strangely philosophical of a tradition, which will transmit to them many ways to find and create light. According to the Flintmasters, light is power, especially in the darkness, and every single Candlemaster desire more power.

To be fair, the archway is forty feet high and forty wide. The runes that don't require any effort to touch are Haug and Ise, and ice storm only does an average of 23 damage on a failed save. [5/6]

Once a Candlemaster is considered trained enough by the rather low standards of the Flintmasters, they are given one task: "bring back the eyes of a true master of the dark", given a blindfold that will make the wearer unable to see with darkvision or in a low-light environment, but that will prevent the effects intense light has on kobolds or from being blinded by it, then made to leave the Flintmasters' abode, violently if necessary. If the kobold desire to further their studies, and most do, they will have to accomplish this task. Most simply lack the capacities to do so, but they attempt it nevertheless, with a determination that could be the subject of legend and tragicaly comedic (or comedicaly tragic) results that are definitively the subjects of drinking songs.

A Candlemaster is easily recognisable at a glance: in addition of their traditional blindfold, worn to protect themself from their craft, they tend to favor bright colors, often in the red, orange, yellow or gold tones, with a lot of gold or copper jewelry when they can afford it. But more noticeable is all the equipment of their craft: their namesake candles, made from the fat of diverse beings or stranger substances, held on either large metallic hats or pauldrons or on hand-carryied candelabras, many torches, lanterns and the like, often sporting an exotic design or being recycled from what the kobold could find, be it bones, armors or worse, and, in various pots, cages, pouches and chests, a collection of light-emitting plants, animals and minerals.
>>
>>50312809
An easy way to throw the dwarf player a bone would be to have him roll History on the runes with advantage for knowing stuff about runes in general. The Giant language is ancient, and Dwarvish is based off of it (or vice versa, if you ask many dwarves).

Make it so on a successful check he's able to read the Haug rune, and recognizes it as the ancient Dwarven word for "home".
>>
>>50312971
Since they share the same root alphabet I'll let him have the option of attempting to decipher it.

I studied 3 years of French and have been there several times but I still couldn't read a book in French.
>>
>>50313015

[6/6]

Found in small, isolated temples, guilds in the subterranean cities of the Underdark that tolerate them, or simply traveling, the Candlemasters combine the kobold ingenuity for devices with their faith in something bigger than the individual, and in many case with their lack of wits and pettiness in every other areas, explaining why they barely if ever work together. Nevertheless, due to their prime directive being to find a "true master of the dark" and bring their eyes to their Flintmasters teacher, the Candlemasters will often find themselves associating with people from the surface who are traveling through the Underdark, generally working for them as torch-carriers in hope of the surface people killing a being from the Underdark the Candlemaster could claims the eyes of. The smarter ones also double as guides, as anyone who survive carrying lights announcing their presence in the Underdark either know safe(r) paths or is very good at dodging the danger of the unsafe ones.

Arguably its an ancient temple from before the dawn of man. It's at least archaic Giant.

You could view the different types of Giants as different cultures with the same roots and similarities but different runes/traditions. Accounting for why Harshnag the Frost Giant can't understand the other 5 runes.

SKT doesn't allow for or suggest any intermingling between the Giant races beyond the Kings court.

It's been established for a loooooong ass time that Dwarves (like Orcs) are not native to Abeir-Toril. They just appeared one day. No one created them and they weren't around when the other "Creator Races" (birdguys, sarrukh, batrachti, humans, and fey) were doing shit.

Orcs, like Mulhorandi, explicitly come from elsewhere. Dwarves are mostly unexplained but the common assumption is they, too, are from another dimension/plane/planet/sphere.
>>

We know that Dethek is an ur-script of sorts. Dwarves all know it, Giant (among other languages) is written in it, Giants DON'T all know it, and Common is based on it. The Giant translation of runes also closely matches Common words (if I told you that the ISE, BLOD, SKYE, WYRM, and VIND runes stood for CLOUD, DRAGON, ICE, WIND, and BLOOD, but not in that order, do you suppose you could figure out which means which?)

Dwarves have also been described as fucking around with Rune Magic way more than Giants ever have prior to SKT.

What you should tell him is that Giant is written in the Dwarven script but Giant Runes are specifically not written in Dethek and do not share appearances with them. They are a unique part of the giant language, like emoji would be to English (or anything else), or complex kanji to a Japanese child who is only familiar with katakana script.

There's no reason a Dwarf should know Giant Runes. Dwarves have their own rune stuff.

Aight, let's do this one class at a time.

Shaman:
You have an archetype with 4 subtypes. There's enough flavor and content here for almost a fully fleshed out class. Narrow down to one spell list.
The HP cost for the abilities is a bit over the top. Just give them the ability.
Also, 1d12 temp hp at 14th level? A fiendlock can nab 5 a round at 2nd level. That needs serious buffing.

Shattered Druid:
This needs condensing, but I understand that you're going for a swiss army knife deal. As of now, there's way too much shit.
Use of aspects needs to be almost free, since you're essentially gaining one ability of an animal (instead of all of its stats, HP, etc.)
Also, Assuming the Identity needs to be a very low-level ability. Again, you're losing everything but one aspect of an animal while getting nothing in return.

That's all I've got for now.

Could a War Cleric follow a God relating to hunting or something? Does anyone know of a God that would fit that description in Faerun's pantheon? Playing SKT.

I wanna be a War Cleric - Hunter Ranger multiclass. Grizzled, veteran Ranger who had retired to a clergy of some god of hunting or something, but when the Giants started raiding the Sword Coast he felt compelled to come out of retirement. His clergy happened to be nearby Nightstone, so he set of to there when he heard of the Giant attack on the town.

Thank you for the feedback!
The barb actually has three subtypes, one default spell list and three options for expansion, kind of like warlock patron's expanded lists. I understand the need for more clarity here. Maybe I can make one spell list and reduce the other options to a variant sidebar.
The damage was an attempt to justify a con-based caster. I wouldn't mind removing it, it's been through several iterations already (small amount of static damage, kill a small animal, small gp worth of material, etc) I think it's appropriate to fluff it as a sacrifice and let the player describe the exact process.
I'll be honest, I haven't personally played much at 14th level or higher, so I can't determine an appropriate amount from personal experience. Maybe that amount + con mod? Plus the barb player's con mod? Flat 20 temp hp?

Until today when people pointed it out, I didn't realize how much stuff I may have included in lists like the druid may have been unnecessary. I was thinking about it, and decided on something like-
one or two options for each slot
they all scale with level
wildshape puts them all on/takes them all off

I was looking at wild shape utility and abilities but didn't really take into account the main reason to use it- increased physical stats and HP, which wasn't covered much if at all by my list. I think a reduced list would look something like-
limbs- scaling damage or scaling strength bonus
body- scaling HP or scaling AC
head- I dunno, bites/AOEs?
and extaneous- shit that gives you swim speed, fly speed, etc

Meaning you build up your monster body once, it gets better as you level up, and wildshape is more like it's original function- letting you turn into something else a few times a day and get all the benefits.

The party was captured by swarms of vegepygmies.
They proceeded to come round in time to witness the grand approach of the vegepygmies vegegod; a giant carnivorous potted plant, being carried by a dozen vps.

The party engaged in recriminations among themselves ("This is your fault! We are going to have WORDS if we get down from here!"), then bullshitting the giant plant, which while very articulate and convivial for a plant I was aiming for 'southern aristocrat' voice, but one of my players said they were imagining him as sounding like Dr. Facilier. #closeenough that while intelligent, wasn't terribly bright. What ensued was a conversation on

>whose fault this was (still going)
>which party member was tastiest
>where the vegegod came from
>why the vegegod shouldn't eat the tiefling (red skin means they're prone to spontaneous combustion, you have to feed them the right diet for a few months to make them safe to eat,)
>how humans were delicious but you had to watch out for the females because they tasted awful when they were in heat
>and yes, the female human was pollinating right now, so clearly he should eat the warlock's bastard no good boyfriend who is absolutely delicious first
>holy shit, it really did just swallowed my boyfriend let's light everything on fire

Then a fight I enjoyed and my players narrowly survived, with something like sixteen vegepygmies, thornies, and a massive potted plant using spells and slapping people with tendrils.

Next session in eleven hours.

What's your opinion on "scripted events"? Like, an NPC is designed to die no matter what at x point for plot purposes.
>>
>>50314845
You need to create the situation so that it's highly likely to happen, but you're kind of screwing player agency if you completely deny them the chance to prevent the death unless it's happening completely off screen.
>>
>>50314913
>completely deny them
How about giving them the illusion of being able to prevent the death?
>>
>>50314845
Tools are important and useful, but should never be abused.

A little of this or that can be good in moderation.
>>
>>50314957
You can make it as elaborate as you want, but at least leave a 1/1000 chance that they can do something about it if they can do something quickly enough and/or figure out what's happening.

Why does this NPC absolutely have to die?
>>
>>50315055
>why does this NPC absolutely have to die?
Part of a plot central prophecy.
>>
>>50315194
For future reference, write your prophecies for multiple interpretations so the fate of this one NPC isn't the lynchpin. Saving the NPC should be a way to delay the prophecy, not prevent it all together.
>>
>>50314845
for NPC death it also depends on the NPC, having Important Townsperson die in a beholder fight because that beholder wanted them dead is fairly easy to have happen sicne its a non fighter getting whomped by a big monster
less so is like Powerful Wizard or Wizened Soldier
two ways to make it seem fair (and "seem" is important here because what important is that the players THINK that they could have done something weather or not they could actually have) is to have it happen off screen ala an assassination, have it happen in battle and cheat him to death.
>>
Anyone else have to referee their DM like read the rules dude
>>
>>50314338
No it was never brought up. The king of the region came by later to see what the uproar in the courtroom was about and our cleric told him he was responsible for defeating the dragon turtle that had been terrorizing trade ships and the king asked him to meet him at the palace for a quest. The king also allowed us to use the armory to arm ourselves for a future boss battle.

to put in perspective:A previous session the cast banishment on the dragon turtle after it attacked one of the ships and the DM rolled a 3. We spent the entire time it was banished rescuing the crew from the sinking ship onto ours and gathering every single cannon and rifle we could move into position and ready an attack action where the dragon turtle would reappear. The dm said since we managed to plan this out pretty well he gave all the attackers advantage and in one fell swoop we managed to deal enough damage to kill the dragon turtle the moment it reappeared.

Could an Arcana Cleric make a decent Gish?

Variant Human,Dex based. Take the feat that gives +1 dex and four weapons, get Rapier and Longbow.

Get GFB or BB from one of your two wis based wizard cantrips.

Seems pretty decent? How would you guys do it. Starting fighter would let me go STR based or stay Dex and I wouldn't have to waste the feat on weapon master, use it for magic initiate to grab shillelegh?
>>
>>50315550
GFB/BB plus Spiritual Weapon would make them a pretty decent sword-and-board gish. It won't have amazing damage output but it's still a full caster in medium armor with a shield.

I've redone it a bit

With variant human and point buy I can do 8/14/16/10/16/8

Magic Initiate for guidance, shillelegh, and maybe goodberry for feeding the entire party for free forever.

Take GFB or BB and ray of frost or firebolt for my arcane initiate cantrips.

18 AC and shilliegh quarterstaff with GFB or BB that eventually gets + wis sounds pretty damn awesome. Totally SAD too

Darkvision, maybe, but only devils and warlocks with, you guessed it, Devil's Sight, can see through magical darkness. Other senses bypass it, too, like blindsight or tremorsense. If you go for rogue increase either Dex or Cha, not both, since doing that wouldn't do shit for you.

I am a 5th level Divination Wizard and I just leveled up to 6.

I'm thinking of picking up Hypnotic Pattern, because it's a nice aoe disable with good range and will probably be useful all game, but I'm worried because I already picked up Hold Person and Suggestion from 2nd level.
They're all Wisdom saves, they're all disables. They all need concentration.

Is it too much? I don't really have a good aoe disable spell and Hypnotic Pattern doesn't even allow them a new save, unless they waste turns waking each other up.
I'll probably never un-prepare it again, whereas Hold Person's humanoid limitation has made it pretty bad so far, and Suggestion has been great but it only has 30ft range and we play a lot outdoors.

I'm also unsure what other 3rd level spell to pick, I had picked Counterspell and Fireball before but they're both very situational and hard to use properly
>>
>>50309252
The party brought down the herald of a demon lord and his lackeys 6 days before they could summon their master.

The Paladin and Wizard died though - one drowned in a pool of blood and worms, the other was eaten alive by swarms of insects. Only the ranger, his mastiff, and the sorceror made it out alive to tell the tale. They've been given an inn in the capital, as dictated in the will of their NPC ally who also was killed during the demon-summoning dungeon crawl.

Fun sesh, I've never killed a PC before so had to change the ambience to "sad fantasy music" as their allies carried their bodies out to burn them.
>>
>>50316781
Hypnotic pattern is incredibly broken and, along with fireball and its "clearly designed intentionally to deal more damage than other spells" niche, is basically everything you strictly speaking need to win combat encounters.

Hold Person and Suggestion are merely "good", and more importantly, are single target. So in essence you have a bit of a first-world problem on your hands; it's not really important. Individuals are going to succeed on their save against hypnotic pattern, and then you can use Suggestion on them or something. Pick up something that targets dex, too. It's going to be fine.

Speaking of, you must have an interesting GM if "dealing more damage than you're reasonably supposed to be able to do, in a huge AOE" is somehow "situational". You place it so that it hits as many enemies at possible, from as far away as you possibly can, and if you hit an ally or two then make sure it's a tough guy who hasn't taken a bunch of damage already, but STILL use the fireball.
Letting enemies be "not dead" so that they can hit your friends, is functionally the same as dealing damage to you friends.
>>
>>50316884
So far I've used Fireball twice to great effect, but I've never hit any allies with it and I'm afraid what might happen if I do so.

I could've used it a couple more times but I would've hit like 3 enemies and 2 allies so I thought it's probably not worth it.
Also once more was a golden opportunity with like 8 goblins bunched up in a small space, but they were in the stables right next to our inn trying to fiddle with our horses, it would've been devastating in all respects.

They were at its base and since it was not that easy to climb and told them needed to make and athletics check to be able to climb it (DC 15). He failed, and asked if he could retry it. Nowhere in the rules as far as I can see tells me what happens when they fail a movemnet based ability check like climb, do they lose their speed? Can they retry with no consequence? should I let them climb it partially and say that the fall?

>>
>>50317064
Two years ago I played an archer battlemaster and I fucking wrecked things in combat.

If you already have another melee guy to soak up damage, pick up sharpshooter and you'll absolutely destroy everything in terms of damage.

Trip, disarm, push maneuvers all work with bows too (very few maneuvers don't). Goading also works, the enemy may not have an easy way to get to you without provoking a bunch of opportunity attacks and you just give him disadvantage on all of his attacks otherwise.

Near the end I had picked up Maneuvering attack and it was very useful, in many cases it gave a caster party member a whole extra turn to act as they would've otherwise just used disengage to save themselves on the following turn.

Why is it that it seems making a deal with a lesser power is always associated with the warlock class and blasting stuff?

Would it not be just as plausible that such a power might grant spellcasting like that of a Cleric, provide you with the knowledge to make your own Arcane magic like a Wizard or Bard, alter your very nature so you can cast like a sorcerer, or make you into their champion as some sort of variant Paladin?

>Trip, disarm, push maneuvers all work with bows too

Don't take any of this garbage on an archer. First because using these from range is just dumb. Trip is negated by the target just standing the fuck up on his turn. If you have multiple shots you're making them at DISADVANTAGE because that's what prone does. Disarm is similarly dumb, unless you're next to the target they just drop their weapon on the ground then pick it right the hell back up again on their turn (doesn't even take an action). Push is almost always a waste from range, since you can more easily just move away from them.

Trip is a solid choice for a melee combatant, and likewise Disarm can be devastating if you've got a hand free (though you should ask your DM about allowing the optional Disarm rule from the DMG). Where Push was dumb at range, it's a free disengage in melee.

While Goading is a good trick, unless your target is immune to Frightened I'd always rather Menacing. It's disadvantage to all attacks (so you aren't vulnerable) AND the target can't get closer to you, ideal for ranged fighter.

It's hard to go wrong with Precision Attack, since it often turns a miss into a hit it's generally the biggest damage boost. Feinting attack may feel like a better choice, but it's worse action economy if you have any worthwhile use for your bonus action.

Add them onto the knight, gladiator, champion, etc. stat blocks. Don't limit them like superiority dice but don't give them extra damage. None of the maneuvers will change their actual CR without the additional damage.

Yeah I saw some of it as it came out. I think it's more because he wants to make x fit into D&D and takes the easiest approach to do so, while homebrew that is more focused usually has goals beyond just representing some fluff. He doesn't want to create a new, interesting race that can be used in some games, he wants to create something that feels enough like a video game race to make it possible to portray that race in D&D. Regardless of why it has happened, at least as the races go they are bland and there's zero reason to use them outside of really wanting to do FFXIV.

A rival school challenges the Academy to a competition.

A knight arrives at the Academy and challenge one of the PCs to a duel.

A visit by a powerful Sorcerer ignites a conflict among the students, one camp thinking only Wizard magic is worthwhile magic, the other thinking that all magic forms should be considered worth it.

Priests of the god of magic comes to the Academy, hoping to convince students to join their clergy.

A Bard perform a concert for the Academy. The next morning, he and several students have entirely disappeared.

Students decide to re-start a forgotten tradition, only for things to turn to a disaster when the reasons why this tradition was dead and burried resurfaces.

Someone has been stealing all the sweets and desserts of the Academy. The cook blame the elves.

An orc shows up, asking to learn magic.

Two princesses in an inheritance conflict show up and demand to learn how to cast a spell. The first one to succeed would be considered the true heir.

I've watched Slayers recently and was really inspired by picrelated - a recurring villain, who is killed every single time he appears, but it turns out that he's just many clones of one guy. I want to insert a similiar villain into my game. What kind of races/powers can pull/are famous for pulling off "many, but actually one" thing?

>>50318057
Depends strongly on the setting and oath. I would imagine, oath of the crown paladins would mostly be on the payroll of the goverment (unless their oath is to goverment in exile, or to a dead bloodline or something), while such oaths as Ancients would be independent and free-spirited.

So I got a new player for the game. We did most of his first character ever before he had to go yesterday, but now that I wait for players, It turns out that some other folk won't be here.
This usually means that we play another 5e campaign, for the people who are pretty much always.

Is It a dick move to make the new guy create another character? I'm a bit in a panic mode
>>
>>50311299
Kek. The barbarian is a warforged who doesn't pick many social cues and when he feels something it's usually rage, while the paladin has pretty much celibacy mixed up in his oath, so being charmed was something new on it's own.
I like the DM, he's ensuring each of us get to do something the characters enjoy while working together on something bigger

>>
>>50320108
Except Spell Points is a variant rule supported in the fucking DMG
How in the fuck it isn't 5e?
>>
>>50320129
1. Using the word "fuck" multiple times doesn't make your argument more compelling.
2. It's a variant rule for a reason, and that reason is that it adds unnecessary complexity to a streamlined game design. It might be fun for some people, which is why it's described, but it's not the default and the designers didn't think it should be.
>>
>>50320108
One could argue that they should just make it a sorc origin if you want to be that boring.

I think it works just fine. Spell points are as mentioned in the DMG and are cooler anyways.
>>
>>50320170
He said it once.
Unnecessary complexity? It's arguably simpler than spell slots. It's literally one number you track instead of up to 9, each of which can only be used on specific things (eg the 3 level 5 spell slots you have can only be used for some 3rd level spells, and then some lower level ones)

I imagine the designers didn't think should be the default because DnD has always "always" operated off spell slots and they didn't want to rock the boat too hard in 5e, not because it's super complex or something.
>>
>>50320170
Somehow point-bases resource managenent seems more streamlined to me than the mess that is spell slots
>>
>>50320209
oh hah he said it twice I didn't even register one time despite reading it twice. That's odd. My bad. Also I said "3rd level spells", and meant "5th level spells."

>>

Also included in the DMG variant rules are proficiency dice, hero points, sanity, and plot points. They weren't included in the default rules for a reason, but are described for people who want to use them.

>>50320209
>>50320210
Maybe I'm just used to slots, but it's convenient to know I can expend all my Magic Missiles and still have a Fireball left over.

>>
>>50320247
Up to you. Probably not by intent but might be cool to keep it
>>
>>50320247
I don't think so, which is super obnoxious because our wizard refused to be cured, which eventually led to us having to kill him.
But if you got to keep it, powergamers would be creating builds that rely on temporary lycanthropy, which is awful and shouldn't be encouraged.
>>
>>50320300
It's fine for one campaign with likely only one recipient. And no one forces you to make the same ruling in the next campaign
>>
>>50320288
Yeah, I think Spell Slots and PP go for a really different design and perspective what with the "expend MM and still have a fireball."

I dunno, I really like seeing alternative methods to "magic" and it gives the Psion a unique design space that isn't just "Why did you not just make a Psychic Origin for the Sorc?" - this lets it do some more neat stuff. Plus, I visualize Psions as more fluid (and "stamina" based) than EG wizards, and this, I believe, reflects that. Also I kind of dislike spell slots.

It *is* basically making official a "variant rule" which will be unique thus far. I don't think that's too bad, but I guess you do.

If they release the mystic outside of UA, it won't be optional, meaning official games will have to accept it. Thus, I think it's important to discuss how it coexists with other classes.

I agree that it shouldn't be a sorcerer origin (although my group did that once before the Mystic first came out). That wouldn't make any sense because psions don't shoot fireballs.
That said, bards and clerics couldn't be farther apart in their spellcasting, but use the same system. Why isn't it good enough for psionics? Like spell slots, PPs were kept partially because of tradition. Except I don't think this tradition was particularly easy to use (having played psionics back in 2e). They probably improved it since then, but I'm still skeptical that it was ever necessary.
Other casters also have magical energy they expend on doing things. Spell slots just help abstract that in a way that helps make sure lower-level spells don't disappear in favor of casting more high-level spells.

>>
>>50320499
ayyyy
>>
>>50320517
Merely the fact that they are the only class with a distinct spellcasting system when there doesn't seem to be any reason for it.

I can give you an example of a result that I don't necessarily think is good. Compared to wizards, PP users can choose to use all of their resources on high-level effects. While this admittedly comes with a tradeoff, several 7th-level effects at level 13 is strictly better in some ways than what any other class can do - especially in short bursts and on days with only one or two encounters, where traditional spellcasters usually have a lot of slots left at the end of the day.
It may be a huge deal, it may be no deal at all, but there's simply no reason to insert a new system where an existing one can serve.

And yes, like >>50320518 says, 5e's philosophy is to simplify, not add complexity. If the Mystic happens, it opens the door to more bizarre designs in the future.

>>50320559
If you value choice, you can always use the Spell Point system from the DMG. There's no reason to make it the default for any class when it's already offered as an optional rule.

>>

Okay first of Undying light warlock will probably get nerfed and the lvl 1 Cha to radiant and fire damage will be changed to a lvl 5 ability.

Sacred flame requires both an attack roll and a saving throw.
Basically: make an attack roll - cool you've hit - now the target makes a saving throw - oh they succeed and take no damage too bad.

So much for a ''reliable damage'' cantrip.

Changing it to a weaker firebolt with a 1d8 damage die that deals radiant damage would have been enough.

Yes, it does do pretty well, if you can get the proficiency for weapons.

When I played it, the backstory involved starting with two levels of rogue and then taking the rest of cleric; we started at level 3, so it worked fine (we had a dedicated healer, so it worked out that I only had to heal twice the entire campaign).

He was fun.

Run up, GFB or BB, disengage as a bonus action; had sacred flame for ranged, plus a few other things. Was Dex, rather than Str, however.

Half Orcs, Tieflings and Goblins are on 3 very different levels when it comes to prejudices.
Plus, it's really up to the DM. In his setting, due to history or simple population repartition, maybe Tieflings aren't associated with pure demonic intents.
>>
>>50321644
It's Forgotten Realms.
>>
>>50321643
Sure. Otherwise kings wouldn't command knights. Rank has very little to do with personal power (at least in most contexts).
>>
>>50321643
Depends on both monsters. A smart creature with a lower CR could have a less intelligent creature with a higher CR under its sway. The low-CR monster might use magic to control or frighten the high-CR monster, or the low-CR monster might be the only one capable of getting XYZ for the higher-CR monster.

I mean if you're throwing your players a trap might as well make it deadly and not just an inconvenience. 2d10 is a bit steep if it targets multiple characters but it's still OK.
