There's a thought, axes are a good idea if you're using stupidly huge weaponry. You don't want a balanced blade then, you want a massive fucking steel wedge to hurl around.

Swords are used to kill people.
Axes can be used to kill people, but also for several mundane uses like chopping firewood.
A man traveling with an axe is a lot more inconspicuous than a man traveling with a sword.
