Pic related just shows up in your party's camp one day. He makes no attempt to communicate, or any hostile move. When you travel, even via magical means, he follows along behind you silently. He will not defend himself if attacked, but seems to be impervious to all sorts of harm.
Sometimes, he's unintentionally helpful, he'll draw fire, but other times he'll stand in the way of something you need and resist all attempts to move him.

I actually used that image for a campaign I was running a year ago
The character did similar things to what Op describes but also summoned obsidian black felinoids with sound attacks

Eventually (read: within the hour) he gets too curious and splits the group in various permutations to find out if this thing is following someone specifically or just the "group" in general, or maybe even if it flips out and tries to murder everyone when we do it.
Then we can figure out how to get rid of it. It's basically either a weird curse or some god(-like being) playing tricks on us.
