I had this exact same problem/complaint while running Curse of Strahd. Couldn't find anything under dog, but eventually found Mastiff. Why they decided to be that specific, I have no idea.

I remember I briefly played a Druid in 3.5e D&D with a wolf companion.

He got petrified in the second session. I went berserk and fucked up like 5 goblins 2 levels higher than me solo. Never again.
