He is out on his holy quest, on his way through the wilderness to some citadel of the undead, in hostile territory where the wrath of the god meets the indifference of nature.

And their challenge to get their friend resurrected isn't to get some guy twelve bear asses, but to track this crusade into the depths of hell.

For the simplistic and small price of them sitting down and listening to what he has to say, he can tell them his (abridged) life story. Sure, you can tell your deeds to the gods, but sometimes it's nice to know there are people out there who know of your tale.

Like I said, you should keep the tale short, because let's face it, unless the players legitimately want to hear his story, they're going to get bored. Heck, you don't even actually have to tell the story; just going "you all listen to the priest's life story. You're not sure if you got all of what he said or if there was any particular point to this, but at the very least he seems eager to help you now." will probably do the trick.

said, it would make for an amazing adventure to have to follow after him on the pilgrimage. Then once there, he'd make them a deal:

If one of them converts to his faith and faithfully finishes the pilgrimage with him (The rest can come along optionally) then he will restore the friend back to life. In this way, it is incentive for the cleric as it means someone new to the faith (And a companion for the pilgrimage) and it's incentive for the party as it means the friend comes back.

If the pilgrimage is successful (No one dies along the way) then the buddy is restored. If the cleric is to be slain, then allow him to point them in the direction of where the pilgrimage ends. Should the party carry it out, the deity will restore the friend (So long as there is a true believer in the party, if not, nothing happens.) And finally, if someone in the party is slain along this quest, the Cleric will offer to restore that party member as well, but only if they are willing to make a sacrifice (This sacrifice would be something like accepting a brand or an equivalent, marking the 'True Believer' as one of the faith for the rest of their life.) Then the Cleric would help restore the dead party members once the Pilgrimage concluded.
