Hey all, I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the Kineticists of Porphyra IV: End of an Era playtest!

We're going to take all the suggestions and such now and try to implement them before sending this off to the publisher, and we're all hoping that this will be a nice send off to the series. It's been a great honor working on something this fun and I appreciate the support I've been given with this project more than I can express, so thanks everyone for making KOP such a successful series!

There is an item in the last book of Hell's Rebels that LITERALLY allows you to retain *everything* when you die; personality, memories, class levels, the whole nine yards.

Heck, the only stickler is you're not allowed to kill yourself between using the item and waking up dead, and Pharasma is turbo-butthurt at it existing yet can't provide a reason not to use it beyond MUH BALANCE.
>>
>>50176768

>>
So I figured I'd post this homebrew set I've been working on for some feedback.

The purpose of my homebrew was mainly to make the game more accessible for my very very newbie friends, and to fix what I felt were issues with normal Pathfinder (namely feat bloat and FUCK VANCIAN MAGIC). I'm fully aware balance is probably greatly lacking, and I could have left classes and races (which are mostly if not completely homebrewed) alone, but I enjoy making classes and races so that happened.

I want to build a two weapon fighting focused warlord. First, is that a good idea? Mostly going to focus on Kukris and working on making those rather strong, using deadly agility and piranha bite to ease the damage I can do, and focusing on thrashing dragon primarily. What's a good secondary discipline?
>>
>>50176807

Also, you can mostly ignore the rules file, it's mostly the same as normal.
>>
>>50176780

It's the item Barney shoved his heart into so, when he dies, he can become a powerful Outsider (that still keeps his personality, meaning you can get sent to Elysium and, over thousands of years of living as YOU, become a mighty angel that is *still* 'you') and with said power cast a spell that turns him into a Genus Loci and effectively BECOME Cheliax.

Using the item does not hurt you. Using the item does not make you evil. When you die Pharasma is incapable of doing anything but treat you as a typical petitioner. There are no downsides to using this item. None.
>>
>>50176668
This monk is a pouncing DPR monster thanks to being able to turn into a giant feline.
>>
>>50176825
what book is this in?
>>
>>50176846

Hell's Rebels Book 6 "Breaking the Bones of Hell."

The item is called the Soul Anchor.
>>
>>50176696
Got something complex in mind eh?
>>
>>50176825

The best part about this is Barbie's plan failed 100%; he died and became a powerful Outsider... Utterly enslaved to Hell and basically a mockery of what he wanted to be.

That's the plot of Hell's Rebels, everybody! You kill the bad guy and it turns out his plan wasn't going to work anyway! Literally the only thing the PCs accomplish is liberating San Francisco from the fascist shitlords!
>>
>>50176825
Probably because she oversees a cycle you have just got giant dump on. When you die you die. Your soul moves on and merges with your chosen plane or becomes an outsider. That's how things are supposed to be. Just because you can ask your buddies to resurrect you every time doesn't mean that death is actually inconsequential for most people and you have some kind or "right" to live more than intended.

Kinda new to this, never went beyond 5th level and next week I'm going to start in a 9th level campaign so I need help, from a lore point of view, what can be my character? using the Fighter as example, is a 9th level fighter a solider? a captain? a commander? royal guard? fucking elite?

>>50176945
>using the Fighter as example, is a 9th level fighter a solider? a captain? a commander? royal guard? fucking elite?

Depends on the setting, but a 9th level character is typically treated as experienced in their field, a captain of the guard or a shock trooper in the military.
>>
>>50176807
If you want something simpler, use a different system. You aren't making Pathfinder better or more accessible by doing this, all you're doing is fucking your players by giving them an incorrect view of the systems. There are plenty of systems out there that will cater to you with simpler rules or rules light bits. This is not one of them.

Furthermore, if you're going to attempt to make something simpler for your group, put effort into it. The documents are disorganized, poorly explained, and generally lackluster.

How so? Unlike others who post homebrew stuff and cry when it's negatively received, I'd actually like to know how to fix my crap. Keeping in mind this was intended for a real life group that I would explain stuff to in person.

Also, the reason I chose Pathfinder was because it was the one I have the most experience with. Suggestions on other systems? Mainly ones that let you craft abilities/spells/whatever? Because I fucking hate spell lists/Vancian magic.

>What does getting hit with a blast of negative energy feel like exactly?

>>
>>50177025
I have Vanician replacements, but your not getting a spell casting system in PF that isn't list based.

The closest that comes to listless is Spheres.
>>
>>50177025
Well, look at your armor section. You've got it talking about a Dexterity Penalty, but it isn't a dexterity penalty. It's an Armor Check Penalty. That's what it is. That's what it's called, that's what it means. Dexterity Penalty sounds like, ESPECIALLY TO PEOPLE WHO DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT IS MEANT TO BE, like it's a penalty to your actual Dex score. It's an example of it just being a bad idea.

Weapons have crit ranges, but no multipliers. It's basically just... reprinting the CRB weapons, except the CRB weapons table already exists. It is there, easily accessible, right on the SRD. Why not use it?

Like, if you're going to play Pathfinder, then play Pathfinder.

If you want to play Pathfinder without Vancian casting, then use Words of Power, Psionics, Spheres of Power, or one of the other homebrew/3pp/alternates.

If you want to explain things in person, then just print the relevant pages. Get a PDF, it's in the OP of the thread under the Trove, and print the relevant pages. Or just print the SRD page. It's not hard.
>>
>>50177033
Of course, but everything ends. That's an universal rule. Despite your self preservation you will die all the same and the best you can do it to get at peace with that thought. Don't let your base instincts and delusions of grandeur lead you to the wrong path. That's how we get villains.
>>
>>50176871
I had at least, like, three character concepts that revolved around shapeshifting. One of which was just as close to "is just a half-dragon" as you could get without actually BEING a half-dragon.
>>
>>50177069
>That's an universal rule

And rules were made to be broken, kinda like the one broken by the Soul Anchor!

Life and Death must be kept under control. There are many who fear Death turned rampant - but what of Life unchecked? A tree that refuses to die denies its youngers their time in the sun's light, and denies the soil and the insects and the fungi its nutrients.

There are so few who realize this, even in the great Druidic circles. The fire may come, but what grows back afterward could not have done so without it.

All things find purpose in Death, just as they do in Life. All things find rest.

Would you rather lie awake, in pain and exhaustion, when it is time to go to sleep?

Basically a level 9 fighter is a master of arms - the kind of which a region may have just a pair of. That does not automatically determine your profession, though. That character would good at fighting and almost inhumanly tough, but how they leverage this is up to them.

Presuming your character has good social stats and at leat a modicum of ambiion, they could be:

A decorated veteran, sergeant or non-commissioned officer in a local army, guard or mercenary outfit. You are a lot better than most professional soldiers, so you may be sent where things are hard and possibly rewarded with some leadership duties .

A fighting tutor to a nobleman or a fencing school: you are already better than most anyone you meet, so you may be expected to teach ohers

A city or noble's judicial champion: if the culture has the tradition of trial by combat, great one-on-one warriors may be held on retainer, just in case some jackass demands the right.

A bodyguard of a nobleman or another influential person : Fighters are not necessarily the best at spotting trouble in Pathfinder, but you are still quite good at handing anyone who tries to use brute force.

A minor noble: whether due to birth or achievements on the battlefield, your character is a noble and has lands and people who support him. This is most likely in a feudal society where nobles are expected to fight for their liege, so the liege has a motivation to have nobles who can actually fight well.

It will be better for you in the long run. You may believe you wish to outlast your time, but that is a lie.

The oldest dragons are truly pitiable. They have watched so many, even of their own antediluvian kind, fade away. They are so very alone, so very tired, so very cold.

The undead cannot dream. They cannot even truly sleep - only lie in wait. Even the vampire or the lich, which retains so much mortal faculty, is robbed of this basic capacity for rest, in this world and the next.

It is perhaps Pharasma herself, however, who ought to be mourned - for when her task is finally done, she will have watched every star in the universe find its rest at last, and every mortal soul meet with its rightful place. Even the other gods will have long since been granted the privilege of rest. And she will know in that moment that the long cycle is at its end, the universe to descend into the primordial chaos from which it sprang.

Only the mad Groetus will have to stay awake any longer than she, and even then only to at last put her to bed.

The world is as it is for a reason. If you do the work of the next generations, what will be left for them to do? If you plumb all of the secrets of this world and those beyond, what reason will your children have to learn?

If the old oak never falls, where will the seedling grow? Winter must give way to spring, spring to summer, summer to fall, and fall to winter again. Day and night must come in turns, yielding to one another's rightful time and place. The phases of the moon must take their turns. Why not you, then?

Exceptions are not impossible. Just as sometimes balance requires culling lives early, so to can it be served, or simply unaffected, by staving off death.

Sure, that tree in the forest denies other trees by doing so. But what if it's no longer in a forest? Or what if it is the sole remaining tree after a cataclysm?

Likewise, the time controller in his little offworld tower may have fulfilled all of the requirements that death would have of him, and yet still be alive - no longer causing any shit or interfering in any way, yet not being gone.

Explain jellyfish, or(theoretically) lobsters. Those motherfuckers have the potential to live forever, but I don't hear you complaining about them. Face it, this cycle shit is baloney, any species has the potential to live indefinitely, only the fittest are allowed to survive, and if that includes immortality, they so be it.

>>50177689
Avoiding AoO when charging is pretty important, but I'm pretty sure Piercing Thunder and Primal Fury have maneuvers. Though Primal Fury does get it sooner. Though combining a huge size feline with Primal Warrior Stance might equal big damage.

Cuz I had the foresight to take action. And why should outsiders get to live forever but I dont?

And what do you think, the world never changes? That new mysteries aren't made?

Also, if outsiders don't die, and there's still mysteries and adventures to be had, that means either they're lazy as hell, or there's plenty of adventure to go around.

Gnolls are turbo-furry and among the most reviled races in Golarion - they're basically Orcs but *worse*, which is an incredible thing to say when Orcs in Golarion are rape-machines.

Lizardfolk guy here, I'll post later. I'm currently filling out some forms.

The short version is that they were a primarily NPC-only race that got no attention or support. They need to be brought in line with PC races, they need feat support, and there needs to be variants for small ones, large ones, medium ones, and alternate racial traits so you can adapt and customize them to various terrains/places of origin, and to provide some customization in character creation for them.
>>
>>50178181

Eh, fuck it, I need a break anyway.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/more-races/standard-races-1-10-rp/lizardfolk-8-rp

This is your base Lizardfolk. It's 8RP, and while RP are a fairly shit system, it's at least a vague representation of how strong it is, and you should be already going "Oh fucking christ." right about now just from that.

They're a lackluster statblock that's basically "I am a martial. I am only a martial, ever. This is all."

They have no alternate racial traits, no feat support, no actual bonuses to anything other than beating shit to death.

There SHOULD be variants for tiny, agile lizards. Little ones that run across the desert on quick feet to avoid the scorching sand. Little jesus lizards that run across the water. Tiny little salamanders with poisonous skin.

There SHOULD be variants for larger ones. There should be some King Lizard shit, where you're basically a playable Ghonhatine or mini-Godzilla or komodo dragon. There should be variants with huge jaws for being a crocodile, and RIP AND TEARing things to death with them.

There should be various normal variants. Forest lizards, jungle lizards, aquatic ones. Ones from deserts, ones with poison, claws, bites, sharp scales. Weird elemental lizardfolk.

But what did we get? We got fuckall. We got a generic goddamn beastfolk race that got JUST enough content to technically exist, but an uninteresting enough printed statblock and info that it will never get any further expansion. Paizo fucked us, yet again, in one of their many ways.

I've always liked predator / blight druids.

One is the supernatural slasher villain preying upon the weak. Tooth and Claw natural order and all that.

Blight druids *are* the disease, they are the parasite. They see rot and encourage it. Funguses, Molds, "death", these are their domain. cordyceps fungus druids are *terrifying* and they work both above ground and in underdark like locals - particularly where they can tend luminescent fungus fields

Extra points if they 'tame' some creatures like Otyughs or Final Fantasy Malboro's (whose bad breath is actually quite enticing to creatures attracted to decay).

>What's everyone's opinion on Lizardfolk and Gnolls as PC's?

Both are furbait territory sadly, which kind of sucks because both can be fairly entertaining.

Lizardmen let you play big (or small) primordial savages with very few relate-able emotions.

Gnolls can be wonderful cackling bastards. As a wonderful side-note gnolls are sometimes employed as mercenaries in campaigns against undead heavy nations, because not only are they big and tough they're capable of eating rotten/dead flesh without any penalties. So after they kill some ghouls / zombies / skeletons they sit down and feast.

Hell even variants for ones from northern climes.

I live in canada and we found a salamander in the field a few weeks ago. They normally dig about 6 feet deep (to get below the frost line) and hibernate for winter, then they come out again. They can live to be about 20 years old and grow up to a foot long and they mostly hunt bugs.

But yeah, I agree with what you've said.

DM Confession time.

My PCs are a bunch of weaboo murderhobos who only play humans in a clear exercise of their not-at-all subtle racism. Most of our sessions are a mix of blatant weeb faggotry and the roleplay equivalent of "ironic" shitposting. The players loathe anything prewritten, the core PF setting, and anything Paizo has a hand in.

So as their DM, I run them through nothing but free to download Pathfinder Society quests reskinned in a different setting with all of the helpful NPCs as furries and all of the enemies as backstabbing, deceitful humans. This essentially results in the PCs allying with the enemies and killing nonhumans for little reason other than being nonhuman.

Their murderhoboing is single-handedly destroying Fake Absalom, and my players couldn't be happier.

>Hailed as a great DM
>Such deep writing. So dark. Much gritty. Wow.

Depends on the character himself. Could be or could not be. Is he a brooding loner? From your last line doesn't seem like it.
>>
>>50178862
That really depends. If he feels bad about what he did then it could not be. Nothing he wrote is inherently edgy.
>>
>>50178883
For most games having rape at all is edgy.
>>
>>50178920
The character in question is both ashamed of what he did and doesn't tell the party why he was exiled. They know he did something, but not what. The only person who knows it is rape is the GM.

In character it has been two years since he was exiled, during which he became a mercenary and generally continued living his life. Only thing he knows about back home is that the girl he raped is now married, and his father rose to power attack after something shady happened (he doesn't know exactly what). He doesn't plan on returning because he viewed what he did as generally monstrous.
>>
>>50178872
I suppose that's fair.

I just always feel a little guilty that all I have to do is change names and races and suddenly I'm being hailed for having written it. I mean, I try not to be too blatant about it, considering their campaign is now essentially saving Fake Absalom from furry overlords by siding with the underground human resistance. A far cry from the core setting to be sure, but there's still that guilt when I use the pregenerated statblocks, treasure, and most importantly: maps. God I had making maps from scratch. Probably because I'm absolute shit at it.
>>
>>50178965
You're overthinking this. One of the core values that defines a good DM is the ability to shamelessly steal material from other sources without letting your players realize where you steal it from, especially in areas where your own creative abilities fall flat.

You're doing well.
>>

Werebears / Wereboars. Other types crop up but they're a bit rarer.

Weretigers / were-crocs / were-sharks are more location-ally dependent.

was working on a backstory for a human raised by an Orc chief, wanted to get /tg/'s opinion on it/if it's too edgy.

>Raised among a savage orc tribe
>she was just a baby leftover from a village raid, pulled on the chief's hand as he uncovered her from the crib, he couldn't bring himself to kill her since he had recently lost his own daughter
>Was raised by the chief/boss of the orcs (So she never got raped.)
>She was made fun of for being weak and scrawny since she had difficulty lifting most of the weapons offered to her.
>The Orc's raid a bandit camp, come back with a lot of lighter weapons that they normally would smelt down for armor/better weapons
>One of the weapons catches her eyes
>It's a Elven Curve Blade
>Adoptive father notices that she is drawn to that weapon
>Fast forward ten years or so, she's come of age and mastered her weapon so now she must take the tribes rite of passage to become the next chief.
>one of the other orcs will claim the spot for themselves if she doesn't pass the rite of passage and so she goes on an adventure to complete it

I was thinking mechanically go unchained rogue for the first few levels to get dex to damage, little bit of sneak attack and then go into fighter?

Or just continue the unchained rogue path?

Also if anyone might have some art that might fit this character, I would appreciate that greatly as I've had some trouble finding anything I like.

Boars would be a bit more uncommon among elves due to their sheer *anger*. If they did crop up often among elves they'd probably be shunned.

Bears are a bit... incongruous due to their strong lawful inclinations, unless you're going with more "warcraft" oriented elves.

I'd kind of like to see a bird / turtle skinwalker though.

>can't *lift* the orc weapons

Except for the double-axe and the rarer-still skull-ram (which is a fucking ram) the weapons used by orcs are for the most part no heavier than curveblades.

Read the entry.

They're the most common, they're kind of lazy but thick skinned, they're ruthless but patient, and they like to fuck. They're also rather fucking mean and they like to intimidate. This probably means that in tribal hierarchies they climb the social ladder, install themselves at the top and make a harem.
>>

It's somewhat contradictory because the entry says that both witchwolves and scalehearts are the most common.

Because they were a NE colony of werebats. They did what werebat and werebat kin generally do and that's drain the country side of blood and kill quite a few people. He met an old man in a village and would sneak away, and one night when he learned the flock had killed the old man (the man would be the one who taught him the basics of his class, I'm leaning more towards alchemy) he decided he couldn't do it any longer. He would have killed the matriarch in her sleep, and killed a few more before they woke up and started fighting.

Yeah see I do the opposite. They roll for how well it was received, effectively. If they actually fucking roleplay and give some good words, that right there's worth a bonus. That way, (remember there's no nat 1 penalties/fumbles with skills) even if they roll like shit, the situation's not as bad than if they just threw in the dice.

Likewise, when the party mage sperges out and combines "I don't need to waste a spell for this" with explaining to the princess how drinking his semen will grant her his protection from the demons - OR ELSE -, right in front of her fucking family, he's going to get run out of town.

It does. You choose who and how your interactions are framed, under the context of how well they'll be received. There are a lot of different outcomes both well and badly can take. You are the engine go that end. RP most certainly effects the G.

You've never heard someone give a speech or even just a few lines, and because of a little bit of intonation or the like, it got taken the worst way possible?

Or, take pick-up lines for example. If you're attractive enough, "you wanna go bang in my car" can actually work (if she's drunk enough), but when your head is a pizza and your voice dripping with as much snot as it is autism, even the most romantic poem will get you slapped.

The skill check if you actually speak, is thus best used to measure the reactions in this way, rather than automatically determine that you threw away your cards, picked your nose on stage and started screaming that hillary was all the crook.

>>
>>50180708
I'll have you know the internet test gave me 130 IQ score, I could potentially cast up to 3rd level spells!
>>
>>50180708
No that would be if I made the autist who can't deliver a good speech get penalties on his diplomacy roll. The way I do it means his roll is what matters and he plays the roll out to the best of his abilities.
>>
>>50180668
>The skill check if you actually speak, is thus best used to measure the reactions in this way, rather than automatically determine that you threw away your cards, picked your nose on stage and started screaming that hillary was all the crook.
I entirely disagree. I have them try and act out their roll. In this way they don't deliver something that doesn't fit the roll and would otherwise make the narrative less cohesive. Mechanics first to give context to roleplay is much better than roleplay then mechanics to interpret it in my opinion.

Problems:
>Reflex is not as valuable as Fort, and Will is most valuable of all
In some classes the latter two are among the reasons for slightly lesser class abilities early on, or the like.

>No considerations for initiators, manifesters and I guess if you really have to veilweavers
Also there's no consideration for prepared vs spontaneous casters (psion/wilders are equivalent to the latter). Initiators are somewhere in between the 'paladin' and the 'bard' level; being a bit too good at the former's level in combat but not quite good enough AND lacking in versatility/utility for the latter.

>Vital strike still worthless
Vital strike is still worthless in that form

Finally rule 5 is way too vauge and arbitrary, which leads to worries based on your ability to balance things AND/OR possibility of playing favorites or least-favorites.

It basically reads as "I'll come up with special abilities/effects on the fly"

Which means they may be determined by how good a day the GM is having (which can mean that a few hours between various players finishing their characters could have wide-reaching consequences), or even if emotion/friend neutral still depends on the GM's understanding of particular rule interactions.

Consider how many fucktards actually believe the kineticist is OP, and how that would affect their design when adding things to or from it.

Well, for example, your example already has a severe disparity in the 'value' of the martial art sytles.

>Jhou the Fighter's martial arts style gives him the damage capability of wielding two shortswords and the AC of full plate armor
This guy's in trouble. The 'effect' of full plate means his dex to AC is shot, and dual-wielding is in a pretty bad place in pathfinder.

>Sa-Li the Ninja has a martial arts style that gives her the benefit of a Chain Shirt and a Shortbow.
She's got the best light armor and the strongest class of ranged weapons without having to pay for either - and the closest thing to an expense an archer would normally need is paying for things like an adaptive bow.

The mentions of sundering/disarming a style are also rather ill-defined and too vague to make much of a judgement on.

>not a crybaby
Uh huh.

How is there not an 'intelligent suit' set up for Aegis anyways, a-la blackblade?
>>
>>50180581
was hoping for something cheaper than that, and didn't take up an item slot.

it's for an emergency if I fall off my mount, not an all the time thing.

Do we have a pdf of crimson throne yet?

I'm still waiting for my fucking book to come in the mail.

Amazon.ca still doesn't fucking have it, and after getting frustrated with them for not having the book I preordered, 2 months after its release, I got them to waive the shipping cost to send it to me from the usa.

I still won't get it until next week.

So, pdf?

Has anyone read it yet? How is the update?
>>
>>50181354
wouldn't it make more sense to just use Synthesist Summoner?

>>50181480
I have the PDF but haven't looked at it yet.

>>
>>50181504

I don't control the trove either.

What character story do you guys think cab be made out of these keywords? A slave-born, House of mages, enigmatic intelligent blade, eldritch horror. Yes I'm having bladebound magus in mind.
>>
>>50181512

>>
>>50181613

Man, the Eldrich Scion is a total disaster of an archetype.

>Let's make the thing that absolutely makes the Magus be the Magus and give it to them at level 8 instead of level 1

What the fuck.
>>
>>50182461
Well you can use that at level 1 when you're in a state of mystical focus buuuuuuuuuuuut

>As a swift action, he can spend a point of eldritch energy to enter a state of mystical focus for 2 rounds.

Use a swift action every 2 rounds to be useful!

Don't forget that you can't use metamagic with spell combat now!
