What would be the best way to play a support-oriented paladin, but still tanky? More focused on protection NOW than healing LATER.

In Pathfinder, healing during combat is generally a waste of a turn, with a few exceptions such as Swift Lay on Hands (only applies when healing yourself, not someone else). Most of the time healing during combat means the enemy will just undo all your healing with their attacks next turn and you've accomplished nothing.

So yes, focus on protecting allies during combat, heal AFTER the combat. Barring circumstances like a party member being one hit away from death and such.
