I wish I knew of a game that did aerial combat well. It always seems to immediately turn into autism about speeds in three dimensions and turn radii.

Blood Elves in WoW had bird mounts.

I'm making a TTRPG with chocobo style mounts, but they're generally not as nice. They're very loyal but also stubborn and easily angered if attacked. They're also swole af.

Depends on the game. In most games only a specific breed (the black chocobo) can fly. In FFXIV, it's explained that even your garden variety yellow chocobo can learn to fly if you awaken its instinctual ability. Apparently chocobos are evolved from flying birds and most simply never learn due to their terrestrial lifestyle.

Different birds have different turning radii. Geese are clumsy, hummingbirds can do whatever they want.

All the stuff that makes positioning-based combat interesting normally breaks down if you do it in 3D. Zone control is a lot less meaningful when there's one more way to go around the zone, and there's no terrain in the air.

You could fix that by turning things into a dogfighting game. There are good ones.

But you could also just pick any system that doesn't use positioning in the first place, and it'll be fine. Risus has no sense of positioning, and Fate uses zone-based positions that don't give a shit whether you're flying.
