Are Proxy battles or super sentai more conducive to a good roleplaying game experience?

As someone who doesn't like either, I'd say sentai. It is more active than standing behind a pet.

What if the summoner still had choices to make for a support role? Then the duo can punch above their weight class by virtue of adaptability.

Well, with "proxy battles" you can have a good excuse for having a tactical gamey combat in an otherwise simple system.

Then again, so does sentai, as long as you only fight transformed.
>the game is about proxy battles
>everyone has a monster companion for free
>the powergamer still builds his human character for combat

It's not a gamist thing for me. It's more of a immersion and roleplay thing. I want my character to be the most powerful or interesting thing at my disposal. If the monster is the more remarkable thing I want to play the monster, note the handler dude.

You play both.
When in combat, you play the monster. When out of combat, you play your handler.
There can be crossovers (your monster/handler may have utility in the other's area of expertise), but essentially, you just play two characters.

Elaborating on that, I don't want to have my charcter defined by it's relation to another entity.

I get what you mean, but especially in a setting were proxy battles are a genre thing it just doesn't feel that way for me personally. And it would be an inferior exprience to just playing two regular guys. It would be more like playing two halves.

I'm not sure this would be powergaming though.
Since your monster companion would likely be much stronger in combat than you, wouldn't it be more min maxy to instead take utility skills your monster isn't good at?

I can see where you are coming from, though it also depends a lot on the setting details, I think.

>Not training alongside your trusted companion
>>50130920
As long as it's the core assumption of the setting/game, I don't see it being a problem either way.
IT might mean that building your monster/spirit/stand/henshin-form is more intensive than building your mundane-self, but that makes sense.

Whenever this sort of idea comes up on /tg/ I always say that you should play the monster of the person on your left.
