Are pocket pairs really that good?

Seems to me if you don't improve on the flop with them then you are usually screwed since you have so few outs.

That is neither an elf nor a soldier nor a vampire.

I am left confused and bewildered.

Depends on what everyone else has.

THem is not really a game about poker, it's a game of selling.

If pocket pairs were so powerful you'd see more people going all in right off the bat.

But a 3 of a kind is one of the most powerful hands in this game, because higher hands become harder and harder to come by (str, flush, fh, etc) as you miss cards on the flop.

Depends on the river.
The prime contenders for the best pocket cards are the following:
- Pocket pairs.
- Consecutive high-cards of the same suit. On average, AK of the same suit is stronger than AA, and is roughly equal to KQ or QJ of the same suit.
- Fringe cards that complete a straight (something like 5-10 of the same suit), though they are considerably less powerful than the options above.

Interesting, I don't normally share my opinions on this game since it is so competitive and is such a mind game.

I think the first question you ask yourself is it worth seeing the flop? You base this on how others were betting in previous hands paying attention to their actual hand if they actually show.

Pocket pairs become weaker the more people there are in the game. Because the chance of either card being in the deck is smaller.

Do I go for straights or flushes? Of course, but if you play THem to have every hand go to the river I don't see that as a viable strategy for long term survival.

I tell new players "it's always better to bet with a hand than take your chances going farther and farther in with no exit strategy" I also like to take out the bluffers early in the game when they have confidence (or lure them in).

Isn't there a quote that states "Texas hold em is the last real game in the world?" Because you don't even need the best hand to win and it's about putting your money where your mouth is.

I know right! We hardly ever talk poker. But it's pretty cool because it's never a bad thing to learn about. Somewhere down the road you'll play it with your buddies.

Interesting perspectives, thanks for the advice! I've never really played much Texas Hold 'em. (Not the OP, but I'm sure he's appreciative of all the opinions too.)

Oh man, I love Poker. Any way we could set up a game? Any online poker simulators?

Without being face to face THem is not a game that translates well to the virtual world.

Once the money is fake, or there's no pride on the line THem does not work.

We used to play at the buffalo wild wings on their electronic in house game pads. Since there was three people playing at our table alone (me my friend and his wife) it got very competitive. We'd even try to look around to see who else was playing. It many cases pride is grater than money. Alone can afford a 5-20$ buy in, at the end of the night it's bragging rights (but the money doesn't hurt) .

If you are learning try the telltale "night at the poker" vidyas, they give you a feel of being with others. But the online internet poker is just horrible since there's no consequence of losing.

My opinion. Probably the best way would be to do a TTS or use a roll20 like service to do it. Or go to a local bar to play (a couple places like the eagles club, elks, etc have tourneys every so often) or you could go to a casino I think they have beginners tourneys as well

Stop acting like there's strategy to Texas High Card and play real poker.

Actual question... What to you think is real poker?

Not OP, but Ive played poker since I was about 9 years old learning from card books and the pic related intellivison game.

We actively played cards during our school years from 5th grade.

That was 31 years ago. I'm really interested on your take.

Some may say single draw poker, someone I talked to recently played a game that allowed you to redraw all five of your cards (4 now 1 after everyone else is finished with their draw) our game used to be up to 4 with an ace, but in a gambling game you can't prove if they have one or not.

It is possible to play poker without gambling after all.....
