I'm working on a new way of creating maps and I need some practice.
I'm using photoshop. The elevations are made using a gradient map. This map took me about an hour to create.
If any of you are interested, sketch me your continents and mountain ranges and stuff and I'll put together a quick map in the same style.
I'll output as large as 4chan allows and if Imgur is playing nice today I'll get you a link to the 22k x 14k image.

>This map took me about an hour to create.
Jesus Christ, really?
I really need to get into mapmaking.
>>49953995
Yep, though the method took quite a bit longer to develop and streamline.
>>49954038
Shit OP, I wanna help you out but I don't have any maps of my own.
Have you done the map from Avatar? I always thought it was neat.
>>49952936
Is there any tutorial related to your method? All the ones I've used never get the mountain quite right.
>>49954482
I'd rather make something that someone needs and can use. If you've got any shitty sketches I can use that.
>>49954564
Sorry, my dude, it's my own method and I'm such a lazy piece of shit that I don't want to sit down and document the process to make a tutorial.
I'm assuming you want the attached image made into a map, yeah? Grey spots are mountains?
>>49952936
This map, improved by you?
>>49954564
Here you go.

>>49955422
I can do that.
Want me to just figure out the elevations?
>>49955181
You're a saint man, very nice work, but I didn't actually want you to use that map. I was just throwing up something I made from a tutorial.
>>49952936
Can you do this one?
>>49956956
. . . .
>>49955422
Here you go!
>>49957020
I am all over it, my man. Do you want to sketch up something a bit bigger rather than just region?
>>49955422
also http://i.imgur.com/5aRIg8K.jpg
>>49955422
Are these literally coffee stains?
>>49957102
>>49955422
That's such good work
>>49957140
It's a legitimate way to generate random shapes!
>>49957120
Not really. The one region is all I need.
>>49957173
Hey, thanks! Your parents did great work too!
>>49957197
For sure! I'll get on it now.
Seems something like the Eriond world map tutorial, yeah?
>>49952936
Do you have a tutorial available on this kind of image?
Also here's a map I'm working on, is it alright to have text or grids on it or will that mess things up?
>>49957020
Here you go! Enjoy.
>>49957020
oops, here is the high-res link: http://i.imgur.com/sc73tCF.jpg
>>49957638
Nah, it doesn't use any sort of 3d lighting
I did springboard off of that tutorial a while ago and made this but I never finished it cuz the scale was all wrong.
>>49957140
Yes.
A bunch of stains plus some minor tweaking around them. It's really effective if your goal is maximum randomness
I guess all the important elements are marked, since they will affect the map elevation. The brown blobs are mountain ranges. This is continental scale map.
White areas are pretty much under "anything goes"
>>49959106
And here is the map in clean version
I am so happy I found this thread. Please do mine? With the colors and such you used in OP pic.
>>49959427
As an aside, if you could make a large forest taking up basically the entire bulb on the left continent, just the round part (not the archipelago sticking down) that'd be amazing.
>>49957839
I find this interesting due to the fact that the beaches are far too massive.
Look at any satellite imagery and beaches are utterly invisible at any scale that isn't ridiculously close-up.
Rather than accuse your map of being unrealistic with such large beaches, I've got another idea - a large portion of the ocean has evaporated away relatively recently (well, within the last million years or so).
With the ocean receding and large areas of what was once coastal water being exposed, this leaves massive stretches of featureless, eroded sand exposed, completely flat and smooth.
I don't have any maps I want done but you're doing God's work so have a bump.

>>49959427
I'm still here. I've got some clients with rush jobs that need done so i'll pick these up in the morning.
If the thread dies I'll reopen it tomorrow evening.
>>49957839
That's exactly one of the issues that bugs me about it and I might just go back and finish it so it's not bothering me anymore.
Also, no rivers or lakes. Forests aren't done. Climates are fucking retarded. It's got issues.
>>49959448
i'll see what I can do, buddy. Haven't figure out how to implement forests for this style yet.
But, for now, I've got some projects a client needs asap so I'll get to it tomorrow morning.

>>49960140
Thanks man :) I also just started playing around with a Not-Photoshop program and the results are pretty sweet. Appreciate the enthusiasm.
>>49959427
I wonder where the dragons live...
>>49952936
If you could kindly, or at least tell us how you did this.
>>49952936
Well then, time for bump
>>49963160
That's not not-Europe!
That's not not-Europe at all!
>>49963160
>Organise your macaroni
The entire fucking point is to NOT organise them, just throw around on huge piece of paper and then scribble around.
>>49959106
Here is this one.

>>49963097
I'll get on this soon. I've got one more in line before you but I've got some work I need to get done so it'll come in the afternoon.
>>49963097
Also, I'll put together a tutorial but it requires focus and I've been in meetings all morning so it'll have to wait.
Would you prefer a pdf or a video or what?
Rate my map, plox. Also if I could get some elevation/mountain ranges, that would be great.
>>49968368
Forgot to include map!
>>49968403
Cylindrical world?
Reminds me SMAC
Speaking of SMAC
>>49959106
>>49959173
This is slightly altered map of one of the continents, isn't it? At least shape-wise
>>49968403
>>49963097
>>49959427
Just popping to let you guys know I haven't forgotten you. Huge blow up of work from a client. I'm hoping I can get to some of these tonight but I might be working late.
Love you, guys.
>>49967682
Personally, I learn better from videos but either would be great.
>>49957790
"Working on." That's literally a Donjon map dude.
>>49972894
Thanks, maaaannn.
>>49967596
Thanks man!
>>49970035
Yep, you've got me here. In fact, the map outline was drawn with this very picture as bottom layer
>>49975015
That doesn't mean I'm not doing anything with it, I just didn't want to post my clipart tier MS paintings based on it.
Bumping this
>>49968403
Good map. I can see you were thinking about tectonic plates.
>>49952936
I'm not a fan of your style, but I am interested in the process you use.
