Is there a limit to.what can and can't react apotheosis

I believe it's tied to will. Plenty of people in 40k have killed a massive amount of people, often in single combat, but if they've got no desire to serve the gods then the gods don't uplift them.

A dog could theoretically become a daemon prince, so long as it had the sentience and the drive to become one, after serving their god of choice.

it's 40k. the first question to ask is "would it be fucking cool?" then GW will take your answer and rinse it until it's diluted and lame enough to fit into their very-specific mold of how they want to manage their precious IP

Chaos gods can do whatever the fuck they want. The thing is they have no reasonto do so. A sea anemone kills a ton of fish or whatever, Khorne won't even notice that. If we are talking about a shark killing like 80 people over the course of a month, sure maybe Khorne will give it sentience, and eventually make it a daemon prince. He also might just give the shark mutations so it can breath air and walk on land, eventually it transforms into a full blown chaos spawn or chaos beast.

Apotheosis is a conscious decision made by the Gods of Chaos themselves, and Daemon Princes are so far below them on the power scale there's hypothetically nothing that could stop them if they really wanted to ascend someone.

There are other ways of becoming Daemonic, but actual Daemon Princes is basically 'if the Gods want it to, it will become one.' Even the strongest willed of all champions just Spawn if they get pumped full of Warp-energy and the Gods don't feel like letting them be Daemons.

Always found the old daemon prince art really cool, where they've merged with their power armour but you can still see it, like the backpack and the ridge on the head. Makes some of the marines models where they've got teeth and stuff in their helmets seem like the prelude to that.

Generally, all you need to become a Daemon Prince is for the Chaos Gods to take notice and decide to make you into one.

Usually you first have to be chaos lord or some other powerful servant of the gods and then perform some noteworthy deed, as the Chaos Gods are unlikely to give a fuck about some random chump, especially if that person isn't even dedicated to serving them.

Still, it can happen occasionally. Doombreed and U'raka Az'baramael are both Khornate DPs that were warlords on ancient Terra (possibly Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun), neighter of which likely worshipped Khorne in life but whose deeds were impressive enough that Khorne ascended them into daemonhood after the death, and one of the Daemon Princes mentioned in one of the Black Crusade RPG books was apothesised by Slaanesh because she kept eating hir Keepers of Secrets and xhe thought it was hilarious.

It would also certainly fit the character of Tzeentch to apothesise somebody seemingly at random because it fit into some incredibly convoluted scheme.

But once that is done it's a fair game.

Deamonhood is normaly still a reward after long and dedicated service, tho.
