>Mother Nature and mother of monsters are the same god/goddess
>Players say this is too grim for high fantasy and more like dark fantasy

Is that true?

Going off your picture where monsters are generally CE killing machines whose sole purpose is to spread misery and death, yes.
>>
>>49936825
I don't see any problem with that. Life is many things, but not particularly nice. Nature is both butteflies and flowers and wolves and those freaky deep sea fish. While great and beautiful and necesary, nature will also fuck you up if you fool around with it.
>>
>>49936891
Adding to that, 'mother of monsters' is very unnatural.

Well, Gaia did birth Typhon to knock the gods down a peg, after they had killed her giant children.

It's Tiamat's title in sumerian mythology

That was pretty much the Primal Action Survival Setting that I developed with /tg/ a while back. It was basically Neanderthals worshipping the Great Spirit, and tattoing themselves in the blood of monsters to develop shamanistic powers.
>>
>>49937027
Should it be the aunt of all monsters?
>>
>>49936825
If most of your players think that, then for you it's true enough to justify changing it. Likewise, if it's important to you, no amount of commentary should make you change it. It's ultimately only your table's opinion that matters, because no one else will even see your campaign. Asking uninvolved anons is like asking rocks about the economy.

That said, I think it's fine. 'Hostile planet' is a trope at least as old as the sci-fi genre.

Does it matter?
>>
>>49936825
I swear what don't faggots think is too grimdark these days?
>>
>>49937063
Because a classic distinction between "monster" and "ordinary animal" is some element that makes than either supernatural or otherwise contrary to the natural order of things.

Lions that hunt antelope? Animal.
Lion with sword-proof hide that hunts humans? Monster.

Wolf of normal size that goes about its business as usual? Animal.
Wolf of enlarged size that has stripped the countryside of prey and now is attacking farms and villagers? Monster.
>>
>>49937124
What makes you think she's not monstrous or unnatural?
>>
>>49936825
Main reason I'd find it odd is if there's a big distinction between monsters and animals.

Like, if most monsters are basically mindlessbanimals with some magical abilities(wyverns, hydras, etc.) then it's fine.

If monsters are supposed to be weird human-hunting abominations, then it's out of place.
>>
>>49936825
Your players are a bunch of boo huu huing faggots. Primeval divinities,in my opinion, are well above concepts like good/evil. If monstruous creatures in your setting(I'm guessing dragons, hydras, chimeras and such)are naturally ocurring phenomena, and not the result of some wizard messing around, and don't see any problem with Mother Nature being also the Mother of Monsters,as long as it's well stablished and justified by you.
If they don't like it,just find an alternative; all of a shudden I can think of Mother Nature and Mother of Monsters being two halves of the same concept, who were originally a single entity but over time split in two because of different cults arising,or something in the line.

Humans rule over beasts in real life because we "evolved" much faster. It takes hundreds or thousands of years for an animal to develop better natural weapons, we just need to pick up a sword.

If there was a semi-sentient "nature goddess" or similar, why can't she just bless animals with much faster and effective evolution?

"Humans kill my wolves too much, clearly they need to be bigger, stronger, faster and have laser eyes." *poof* The next generation of wolves born are giant, powerful and shoot lasers.
>>
>>49938607
Yeah. It works perfectly from that standpoint. Nature goddess made animals. Human god made humans OP. Nature goddess made dire wolves and dragons as revenge.

Works very well if you want wilderness to still be dangerous, which isn't really grimdark. That's a perfectly reasonable thing for a nature diety to do to ensure her realm isn't usurped.
>>
>>49936825
I don't think your players understand the meaning of dark fantasy. Where's the dark element / horror in what you wrote? One goddess made all living creatures and plants, and maybe the planets too, is all you wrote. Who do they think made monsters in other settings?

Why is same goddess made dragons and giant eagles and elves and orcs and bunny rabbits dark fantasy?

but

Eru made Morgoth and Yavanna and Manwe and elves; Yavanna made bunny rabbits; Manwe made giant eagles; Morgoth made dragons and twisted elves into orcs high fantasy?

There's your dark fantasy, where a god of evil abducts and tortures the quintessential force of good in his dungeons and corrupts it into his own mockery of decency. Don't let Morgoth capture you or he'll torment you until you turn into an orc. Maybe your players are suck f---s and want to trick you into playing their own torture porn magical realm.
>>
>>49938632
Well, the woods being a scary place and nature occasionally pushing back on humans is kinda "grimdark"?

I think if you have a world with gods and "something unpleasant" like Chaos (from Warhammer) or Shadowlands (L5R), it is more reason for nature to weaponize itself against them as well as regular humans.

No?
>>
>>49938905
* meant to be "sick" not suck"
>>
>>49938959
Maybe dark, but not necessarily grim. That scenario would lend itself more to Nobledark or the like where brave heroes who only want to do good rise up to battle monsters.

It doesn't have the same grimdark aspects as Warhammer because it's harder for the dark to infiltrate or corrupt people.

Plus, this is all only true if the only god is the god of the wilds. If there's other dieties to help them stand against it, then it's just a typical fantasy setting where areas outside of towns are dangerous for the sheer fact that monsters exist.

If anything, this makes the world brighter, because rather than being spawned in some hellish realm or being made by evil wizards, monsters would be relatively natural.

Basically, take the Monster Hunter universe and try to say that'd be more grimdark if it was revealed a goddess made all the wildlife.
