Is it possible to take a character like this seriously? How would anyone at the table not bust out laughing?

That seems like a perfectly reasonable point that could be countered by seeing them in actual combat
Anyway if a 12 year old girl is holding her own in a fight I assume magic is involved somehow

Look I've been burning demigods with my mind the whole time we've been together. At one point I turned into a potted plant.

Our warlock has a secret pact with something that he assures us we can't comprehend and keeps breaking laws of both physics and decency.

And the paladins' god is somehow cool with us hanging out with him.

I'm not the type to question shit at this point.

So magic makes it okay?
I'd laugh someone out of they seriously said "my character is twelve years old and can fight properly because magic". That's not an interesting or realistic as in that would ever happen even in a fantasy universe because nobody would arm a child with super strength when you can just give it to someone who knows how to fight instead of a child that would have -5 to every stat due to not being an adult.

If you go to the argument

Then I can simply say that children aren't that because
>A wizard made it impossible to do it
>>
>>49914503

As long as there's magic, meddling gods, supernatural phenomena, demons/devils, weird world rules that grant special perks, high tech that works like magic, or races with unusual abilities far beyond human norms, I'm not foolish enough to scoff at anything without keeping an open mind.

Basically, if we aren't playing in a strict recreation of historical real world settings, I'm not going to question shit that exists in a fantasy world as long as the world is at least somewhat consistent in how it works.

Besides, since the tiny girl is able to effortlessly carry a heavy shield that clearly weighs more than her, I'm not going to laugh in the first place since I'm usually the one playing the damn reality-breaking mage in the first place...

>Five minutes in

It's okay, Anon. Numbers can be hard.

And generally speaking, unless it's already forbidden in our group (and anything magical realmy, such as dicksword wielding lolis are), it's fair game. The GM just killing you off is fair game as well, especially if the other players hate the character as well.

Most of the time when I tell people that I'm probably going to kill them if they play that broken build/self insert/etc, they take the hint and roll up something else. Sometimes they play it anyhow to show that they can make it work even if the concept looks sketchy. Sometimes they actually manage to win me over.

Besides, whenever we get a new autist who sees that our game is pretty permissive, they do the same thing and try to create some retarded bullshit to show us how we have badwrongfun or whatever. This way plays out way funnier than them whining at me to let them play it over text for hours.

>>
>>49914503
If it's a thing in setting that a little girl can rack up xp and become a tiny hercules then anyone with sense will respect that power. They may call life experience and judgement into question however, regardless of combat learning.
>>
>>49917779
>some people use magic to justify X concept in their games
>well I wouldn't allow it in my game!
Alright then.
>>
>>49917716
Because it can be a neat idea if done properly, such as in the legend of Cu Chulainn, Mulan or any other number of stories about children doing exceptional things and besting powerful beings.

Remember Anon, the default adventuring party isn't a bunch of farmers who managed to get their hands on swords. It's about a bunch of people who are exceptional taking on even more exceptional tasks. A supernaturally strong 12 year old with a sword isn't that much weirder than the magical lovechild of a devil and a human who works for a god.
>>
>>49917835
What a strange assumption. And do all of your big boy fighters make sure to finish school before they start training?
>>
>>49917823

But then we wouldn't have had the bro-tier prostitute rogue, the comic relief fighter who's so old that his dentures don't fit him properly any more, or a few other of what turned out to be the best characters in the game.
>>
It's guys like OP that take away the fun in these fantasy imagination games.
>>
So how do you make a child character work, /tg/?

You can make a child sorcerer pretty easily, but how about a child martial character? Can it be done?
>>
>>49917944
Martial characters barely work, adult or otherwise.
>>
>>49917944
Yes. As has been mentioned, Cu Chulainn kicked the shit out of a hound that grown ass Irish warriors were terrified of, and he did it with a ball.

Just have them be a freak.
>>
Some anon in another thread mensioned he once played a child character who'se strength came entirely from gear (they started the game ad high enough levels that they could all get some magical items at character creation). As long as she wore her magical gauntlets, she had superhuman strength. But if she was forced to remove them she was only as strong as you'd expect from a little girl (albeit a little girl with class levels, so she'd still be able to kick the ass of the average adult even with a low strength score).

Something like that (a character who'se powers are very much tied to a specific magical item that they'd need to keep around) could be fun to play, provided the DM is not an ass and immediately destroy the item.
>>
>>49917944

Child monk would work pretty well, and your mental stats wouldn't even suffer that much if you were in a monastery from infancy. You'd take a major hit to str, which monks couldn't give less of a fuck about, and kids debatably get a bonus instead of a penalty to dex for being smaller and more flexible than the average adult.

They also suck at hand-eye coordination and sometimes have trouble walking straight. CON would suffer from not being exposed to any diseases, having a poor diet, and probably from racial adjustments.

>>
>>49918299
Not entirely, but the difference is small enough that it's not a huge issue. A wizard is still more "optimal" than fighter for most situations, but you can still play a fighter and be useful, while in 3.5 you were shooting yourself in the foot.
>>
>>49917791
Sources?
>>
>>49918299
Casters have plenty of options in and out of battle. Martials don't have much of anything for out of battle, but at least they have some sort of variety and viability in combat.
>>
>>49918291

I'll give you a minor con penalty just because they're small, but kids are also stupid durable compared to adults. I've seen ten year olds walk off falls that would hospitalize any of the big, tough construction workers I work with.

As for kids being clumsy, that's more a early childhood thing. The range we're talking about has perfectly fine coordination.

Also child monks already exist because of exactly all of these reasons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuEJesXNE_E

>So magic makes it okay?

>>
>>49918460
Why does magic make it okay?
>>
>>49918482
Because magic is integral part of the setting. Some people use it to shoot fireballs, some use it to reinforce and hone their bodies. D&D distinction of "mundane" and "magical" is lame.
>>
>>49918507
So someone had enough castings of permanency and every stat buff spell available and decided to waste over a hundred thousand gold worth of castings on some dipshit kid? Not likely.

He can reroll and jump in later, when there's an opening for it. If you want to take a risk with a character concept and don't have to chops to make it not awful, sitting out for a couple of hours is what happens. He could have just rolled up another character that wasn't aids, but if you insist that it's not going to be that bad and it is, you were warned.

Wow. Is that what children are like to you?

You just compared playing a child character with blatant fetish material. I guess you're too fucked in the head from anime porn to even function, since you see it everywhere. Are you so in denial of your neckbearded fetishes that you can't play anything other than plain medieval earth with elves and dragons without triggering yourself? Even the "adult" characters in the game could be interpreted as very young. The shield lady here is supposed to be ~27 years old. EO's style is just like that consistently.

>>49918929

The context of when I off characters was a "naked five year old loli with a giant fat dick she uses as a sword is okay because magic."

I'm actually pretty okay with child characters as long as they're not sexualized or gore bait or anything creepy like that.

Same reason a human isn't smashed across the room when parrying an attack from a giant or a dragon. DnD isn't in any way an accurate or realistic simulation of physics.

>How is it that most of /tg/ is baffled by the idea of weebs playing RPGs together?
Because they're a subgroup of a group of people, and just as every group of people wants to believe they're the best group of people, every subgroup must believe they're the best subgroup.

They shit on weebs because the alternative is admitting that you might just be regular, not exceptional... and modern society is built by (wo)man-children with no capacity for self criticality.

By gross generalization you should already know that the loudest people on tg think that it's not about having fun it's about mocking others about how they are having it.

>playing anything other than grimdark angry murderhobo nº1353 then bashing others who don't.

If there is a way or better yet you manage to find one out by learning about the setting and mechanics of the game then it's fine.

Those who say that it can't be taken seriously maybe it's more about how mature of a person you are than about the concept if you see a child soldier and you think that it's magical realm stuff automatically maybe the mirror is just a little foggy?

It's fair to say that applies to most of 4chan really.

>If there is a way or better yet you manage to find one out by learning about the setting and mechanics of the game then it's fine.
Yeah, really there's an aversion to strange characters on a greater level here.
Which is sad making a weird character and fleshing them out is a lot of fun.

>and you think that it's magical realm stuff automatically maybe the mirror is just a little foggy?
The revolution of magical realm itself is weird here as well. Like a terminal fear that somebody might be attracted to a character or anything in a game is some horrific concept.
The masturbating at the table meme is even more bizarre. There's a separation between titillation and sexual content without just being porn and wanking.

Unless the entire shield is immovable, that's not gonna last long before the rod forcibly detaches from the shield.
>>
>>49924176
Make them inside the shield or sovereign glue them to it.
>>
>>49924199
That's only going to mean the detaching destroys the shield in the process. Unless the whole shield goes immobile, the nonimmobile parts are gonna warp until they snap free.

.... Are you saying the shield has to be indestructible now?

Because I'm just stating that using magic there are ways that you could have a shield be used by someone.
>>
>>49924283
>.... Are you saying the shield has to be indestructible now?

Go take a good sturdy ruler, find a solid post/beam of some sort, and duct tape the ruler to it sideways so the ends are going over the sides. Then start whacking on the parts of the ruler that aren't covered in tape and watch what the taped part does.

That is what is gonna happen with your strap an immovable rod to a shield idea. wherever and however you put them together, it's gonna stress the fuck out of the materials, whatever part is weakest is gonna start warping until something gives entirely.

To say nothing of the fact that strapping an immovable something to your arm is a terrible idea in combat.
>>
>>49917779
You sound like a true joy to play with. You must have people lining up for a chance to play with you.
>>
>>49924514
Okay, so we know that a ruler is going to bend.
What's the point of that? Yes the shield will bend and flex with impacts. Metal is quite robust.

And you don't have to strap it to the shield, you could easily put it inside the shield.

And I NEVER said putting it on your arm. You could literally place it wherever.

Besides, even if it was strapped to your arm, you can turn it on and off again.
>>
>>49924663
>What's the point of that?
The point of that is that you can beat on a loose ruler or a ruler that is fully strapped to a solid object all day and nothing will happen to it, but strap only half of it to something solid and you're liable to snap it in half because that kinetic energy has to go somewhere and you've robbed it of the ability to simply transfer the energy into motion.

So guess what happens to a metal shield when suddenly it has a rod-shaped solid object for it to not move against? Combat grade metal is a fair bit sturdier than a ruler, but having to take the energy from a blow all at once because you've removed the ability for motion to extend the time of impact is gonna be hell on every part of the thing that isn't a single solid slab of metal. It's not gonna break right away, but it's gonna do it a hell of a lot sooner than a shield that you aren't trying to fuck with in a halfassed attempt to be clever with an immovable rod.

So, the non metal parts of this shield are going to break from a single blow, rendering the shield useless?

Such a shame that shields are made where they can't be hit more then once.

You're claiming that it would be useless. I'm saying it would be useful to have a shield able to withstand blows that a character couldn't brace themselves to fend off.

Metal fatigue wouldn't destroy a shield after a few hits.

I am specifically calling out the 'lets take an immovable rod and build a shield around it' as useless, because it fucking is. You want a shield that won't budge when it gets hit, enchant the shield directly, don't fuck around strapping unrelated magic items to it in an attempt to be tacticool.
>>
>>49925361
Which enchantment prevents a shield from moving?
Adding a magic item to something is now "tacticool"?
Do you not let martials slap magic items together to gain magical abilities?
Why do you hate fun?
>>
>>49925438
>Adding a magic item to something is now "tacticool"?
Given the action economy on the IR, this case is very much tacticool.

>"I use my move action to activate the immovable rod I strapped to my shield!"
>"Ok. Your enemy notices that your shield stopped moving and repositions so your shield is no longer in his way, take an additional penalty to your AC because you've got your arm strapped to something immobile."
>>
>>49925496
>I quickdraw my shield
>I say the command word
>I drop my shield
All of those are free actions.
Bear in mind you can also drop items into adjacent squares.
>>
>>49914606
That's how you know your campaign is getting good.
>>
>>49925602
>>I say the command word
But the immovable rod is button-operated, anon.
>>
>>49925630
It can also be created to function off of command words, anon.

In fact, separate words for activation and deactivation.
>>
>>49925602
>>49925630
and while I'm at it,
>>I quickdraw my shield
readying a shield is a separate action from drawing a weapon, quickdraw does not apply.

>>I drop my shield
You can't free action drop a shield you are using. Carrying yes, using and benefiting from no.

And to stave off the obvious next step
>>B-but if it's hanging between us it provides cover
At melee ranges, only walls provide cover.
>>
>>49925708
So now we've gone from it not being able to withstand any attacks to it not functioning in a specific system?

Not even the original anon, but this is some serious goalpost moving.
>>
>>49925766
>assuming the system that the rod originated from is goalpost moving

Those are all grade 3+ spells that a starting character wouldn't be able to cast, and require thousands of GP to make permanent. I expect one hell of a backstory that promises to bite you in the ass later. You don't get something for nothing.
Also, since it's magical, it's going to be affected by Dispel Magic and Anti-Magic Field, and shine like a beacon to magic-sensing creatures.
>>
>>49925672
>wanting your custom job item to operate off the absolute least secure activation method.
Enjoy every enemy with half a brain saying the command word for 'please lock my shield in place so I can't block your attack' after you use your gimmick.
